Backstage Jams Vol. 4: Trey Trades Licks with Warren

Trey Anastasio & Warren Haynes

Blues Jam feat. Funky Bitch

Date

Venue
Christmas Jam at Asheville Civic Center

Location

Welcome back for Vol. 4 of “Backstage Jams.” So far we've featured Jimi Hendrix backstage playing Hound Dog, Jerry Garcia backstage playing Crazy Fingers, and Pete Townshend backstage doing a two song mini-set.

When you go to Warren Haynes Christmas Jam, you're guaranteed some great jam sessions on stage. So it's probably no surprise that there's some jamming going on backstage too.

In this video, Trey Anastasio is backstage with Warren himself. The clip begins with a short interview, followed by a nice Funky Bitch inspired blues jam that finds the two virtuosos trading loose licks for about 5 minutes.

The tone and sound on warren's guitar is fuckin mind blowing.

Personally I dig this little backstage jam session though there's plenty of disagreement over its merits on the YouTube comment thread.

But my favorite part isn't actually the music at all — it's the way Trey and Warren share a laugh at the end, as if even they're surprised by what just transpired.

“That was cool” Trey says. Yes Trey, cool indeed.

P.S. I'm assuming this is from 2005 Xmas Jam. If you know otherwise, please drop a comment.

Welcome back for Vol. 3 of “Backstage Jams.”

In case you missed the past volumes, Vol. 2 found Jerry Garcia backstage playing Crazy Fingers while Vol. 1 featured Pete Townshend backstage doing a two song mini-set.

Today's Backstage Jam features yet another legend, Jimi Hendrix, doing a solo acoustic version of Hound Dog backstage at Royal Albert Hall on February 18, 1969.

Like most backstage jam videos, this one leaves you wanting more. But the good news is that in this video, the jam is followed up by an incredible Foxy Lady so you can take care of your jones right away.

And if you still need more Hendrix after that, you can always find plenty of Jimi Hendrix concert DVDs with the Jamtopia Concert DVD Finder.

Welcome back for Vol. 2 of “Backstage Jams.”

In case you missed it, Vol. 1 featured Pete Townshend backstage doing a two song mini-set. Today we've got another guitar legend, Jerry Garcia.

It's an intimate video that offers a rare look at Jerry's unique fingerstyle on Crazy Fingers as he warms up in the dressing room before a show.

A beacon of life to those who would just stop by and dance to his music

My only complaint about this one is that like Jerry's life, it's just a little too short and leaves you wanting a whole lot more.

Of course, if you do want more you can always find plenty of Jerry Garcia concert DVDs with the Jamtopia Concert DVD Finder.

Welcome to the first in a new series here on Jamtopia, “Backstage Jams!”

To kick things off, I found this up-close look at Pete Townshend doing Tattoo and I'm One backstage at the Ice Palace in Tampa before a Who show on September 26, 2000.

If you only have time for one song, jump ahead to the two-minute mark for I'm One. It's one of my favorite tracks on Quadrophenia and this version is superb — a master-class in rhythm guitar with a sweet little jam at the end that you don't want to miss.
