Venue
Christmas Jam at Asheville Civic Center

Location
Asheville, NC

For the past 19 years, Warren Haynes has been melting faces for charity at his annual Christmas Jam to benefit Habitat for Humanity (donate online).

Here's a clip from the 2006 show, a Gov't Mule cover of Cortez the Killer with special guest Dave Matthews — a semi-reprise of Warren's appearance with Dave Matthews Band in Central Park 2003 (video below).

The sold-out 2007 Christmas Jam featured G Love, Frampton, Hornsby, and more. Visit Asheville Citizen-Times for a review of the show and some videos. The comment thread alone is worth the click. Brilliance.

Cortez the Killer originally appeared on the frequently overlooked album Zuma by Neil Young & Crazy Horse.

Props to Funkamedic for posting this video.

Zakk Wylde w/ Slash

Voodoo Chile

Date
Sat, July 30, 1994

Venue
Riverfront Park

Location

This one pretty much speaks for itself.

It's Zakk Wylde being joined by Slash for a nearly 10 minute rendition of Voodoo Chile at Gibson's 100th Anniversary concert in 1994.

Zakk Wylde Signature GuitarIf you want to melt faces like Zakk, start by picking up a Zakk Wylde Signature Model Gibson guitar. It's a real bargain at just under $4,500!

Phish w/ John Popper

Song
Mean Mr. Mustard and Weekapaug

Date
Fri, November 15, 1996

Venue
Kiel Center

Location
St. Louis, MO

Here's a little one-two punch to end the second set of a 1996 Phish show at the Kiel Center in St. Louis.

Up first is Phish's only performance of Mean Mr. Mustard. It's a nice treat though I'm pretty sure no faces were melted during this tune. But facial safety was fleeting that night.

About a minute and a half in, as MMM is winding down, John Popper limps out from from stage left doing the Willy Wonka routine, complete with cape and cane.

Popper approaches the mic and the band starts ripping Weekapaug. I'm no harmonica expert, but I know a thing or two about face-melting, and this guy melts some serious faces as seen in this three and a half minute blowfest.

Watch through to the end for a great panoramic view of the crowd holding up lighters — and a small group of over-achieving fans using sparklers — to urge the encore.

Govt. Mule w/ Josh Clark

Song
Rockin in the Free World

Date
Sat, June 02, 2007

Venue
Mountain Jam at Hunter Mountain

Location
Hunter, NY

Here's Govt. Mule doing a nearly 10 minute version of Rockin' in the Free World with Josh Clark sitting in at the 2007 Mountain Jam.

The beginning features Warren Haynes doing a somber, bluesy, rendition of the last verse of Bob Dylan's Masters of War.

The first half of Rockin' in the Free World is pretty standard, though still rockin', as it were. Following the versus Josh has a short "experimental" solo (read: not my favorite) and that's followed by a nice bridge, again rockin'. Then Josh and Warren have a little back and forth, again a little "experimental" for my taste.

All in all, this one's more for the novelty if you ask me.

Phil & Friends w/ Trey

Song
Cumberland Blues

Date
Sat, October 20, 2007

Venue
Glens Falls Civic Center

Location
Glens Falls, NY

Fans of Phil & Friends got a nice treat last night as the band was joined by Trey Anastasio for his first complete show since his arrest last December.

While some disagreed, most reviewers were happy to see Trey up there while the setlist — with its lyrical theme of judges, jails, and arrests — seemed to make light of Trey's legal situation.

Shown here is just under three minutes of jamming from Cumberland Blues featuring Trey and Larry Campbell trading some fiery licks.

UPDATE (Oct. 27): You can now purchase and download soundboards of the show from Phil's site.

Phish w/ Jay-Z

Song
99 Problems & Big Pimpin'

Date
Fri, June 18, 2004

Venue
Keyspan Park

Location
Brooklyn, NY, USA

The fans never saw this one coming. Two songs into the second set of Phish's two night stand at Keyspan Park in Brooklyn, Trey announces a special guest... “Brooklyn's own Jay-Z.”

The audience cheers, a tad skeptical at first. “Uh, uh, uh. uh. uh.” Page shows genuine enthusiasm, smiling and laughing as Z enters Page-side. The audience gets into it once the temporary front-man starts working the crown and they realize it's not just Page's brother.

Musically this one leaves a bit to be desired. The best part of the video comes early. Z holds out his mic for the audience to yell “a bitch ain't one” and about 3 people know what to say. Even Z himself has a laugh about it. The second tune, Big Pimpin', is basically more of the same.

As guest appearances go, this one has nothing on Kid Rock in Vegas.
