The 11 Most Resonant Concert Performances Of All Time

Posted Mon, July 21, 2008 at 9:14 pm by Todd Levy

I recently came across a great post on Earvolution, where David Schultz wrote about what he believes are the “Eleven Most Resonant Live Concert Performances of all Time.”

A group of performances that had relevance beyond the notes that were played and resonated well beyond the time and place of their occurrence.

I liked David's post so much I figured it'd be cool to capture all the great concert videos he recommended so you can watch them right here on Jamtopia.

Here's his list. Just click a link to jump to the concert video…

Venue

Location
San Diego, CA

Based on the number of YouTube views, I'm pretty much the last person on the entire Internet to see this video. But just in case there are a few of you out there who haven't seen it yet (and because I really wanted to use “toe jam” in a post title) I had to share it here.

Mark Goffeney is an inspirational and dedicated musician who, despite being born without arms, makes a living playing bass and guitar — with his feet. And he doesn't just play, he plays well.

thats fucking insane, hes even doin fuckin palm mutes, but on his fucking foot. insane.
RippinSkullz

Mark's not just a busker either. He's the lead singer and bass player for his band Big Toe and has even performed in an an Emmy-nominated TV commercial. He's also a licensed driver, in case you were wondering.

As you can see in the YouTube comment thread, the jokes about Mark practically write themselves, but I think at the end of the day the guy making a living doing what he loves is almost certainly the one getting the last laugh. Props Mark.

Thanks to dhyrenz for posting this amazing video.

Venue
Bonnaroo

Location

I read a ton of Bonnaroo reviews this year, and the one thing I really wish I could've seen was this.

About halfway in to an epic performance of nearly four hours, My Morning Jacket announced “up-and-comer” Kirk Hammett — yes, Kirk Hammett from Metallica — who joined the band for a rousing rendition of what's become MMJ's signature song, One Big Holiday.

The six best minutes of live music I've seen this year.

I've been hoping to post this since I first read about it, but it took a few days for a remotely watchable video to surface. This one's not perfect, but it does the trick for now. If you like what you hear, head over to etree where you can download the entire My Morning Jacket 2008 Bonnaroo set.

Baba O'Riley

Venue
America's Got Talent Studio

Last night was the season premier of the train wreck that is America's Got Talent on NBC and it didn't disappoint. Like any good train wreck, I couldn't take my eyes away no matter how bad it got.

But however bad the show is (or has been), back in the first season there was one performance that stuck in my mind...

Of course it wasn't an actual contestant, it was Blue Man Group (with guest vocalist / violinist Tracy Bonham) doing this amazing rendition of The Who's Baba O'Riley that hovers right in the gray area between parody of and tribute to a typical rock show.

While I agree with many of the YouTube commenters that it's a bit strange to hear this tune sung by a female vocalist, and one without an overly powerful voice at that, I'm still fairly confident you'll find it to be a real face-melter.

Thanks to potato794 for the video and to vagabonding for making the suggestion.

Baba O'Riley appears on Blue Man Group's “The Complex Rock Tour Live” DVD featuring live concert footage and three full-length music videos from BMG.

Trey Jams with Robert Randolph and The Family Band

Posted Mon, June 09, 2008 at 12:58 am by Todd Levy

The “Big Red Comeback Tour” has officially begun as Trey Anastasio joined Robert Randolph and The Family Band for a guest appearance on June 5th, 2008 at Jones Beach. The sit-in lasted four songs including A Little Sister, Deliver Me, Bo Diddley, and I Need More Love.

On some message boards I noticed a few attendees lamenting that Trey didn't play with Eric Clapton as well, but from the reviews I've read they still got their money's worth and then some!

And if you were one of the lucky ones in attendance, please post a comment with your review of the show. In the mean time, I'll keep searching YouTube for more (and better) concert videos from Trey's guest appearance with Robert Randolph at Jones Beach.

When I came across 13 year-old Englishman Calvin Prior on YouTube I knew immediately he was next in line for the Face-Melting Kids series.

In this video Calvin rips up Voodoo Chile which he learned, get this, the day before! And while he might lack the charisma of, say, Matt Rach, he's still darn impressive for a kid who's only been playing for 3 years. (And let's also not forget that Rach is 4 years his senior.)

I have a burning ambition to become one of the top players by the time I'm 18.

I was also impressed by his list of influences including a nice range of players from George Benson and Wes Montgomery to Slash and Tom Morello.

Can't wait to see where this kid goes.
