Neil Young

Song
Old Man

Date
Tue, February 23, 1971

Venue
BBC Studios

Location
London, England

My friend Bob Ferdman has been kind enough to write some guest posts here on Jamtopia (see his thoughts on Wilco and My Morning Jacket) so I asked him if there was anything he'd like me to feature in honor of his birthday today.

Well I'm not sure if he was being ironic or not but his request was Neil Young's Old Man. And so here it is, a beautiful version of this tune from February 23rd, 1971 at the BBC Studios in London.

There are just two instruments on this version... no banjo, no James Taylor, and definitely no Linda Ronstadt... just one Martin D-45 and one truly remarkable voice.

To stand alone with nothing but your voice, instrument & more importantly your sole [sic] is completely revealing of what you have to offer.

And since I know Bob likes to watch concert videos on the go, I though he'd appreciate that you can get the entire show in mp4 format — perfect for iPod or PSP.

thanks jamtopia!  for the record, i wasn’t being ironic. i’m old, man. so why not “old man.” if anyone reading this gets the chance, they should check out Bob Dylan’s cover of this from his 2002 tour (a weird tour where he busted out some really great random covers - Stones, Zevon, Young).

my other choice was chalkdust ("can i live while i’m young?") guess i’m at the age now where i don’t know if i’m old or young. a little bit of both!

This is really cool…

I just learned that Neil Young has had a spider named after him!

An East Carolina University biologist, Jason Bond, discovered a new species of trapdoor spider and opted to call the arachnid after his favorite musician, Canadian Neil Young, naming it Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi… I really enjoy his music and have had a great appreciation of him as an activist for peace and justice.”
