Summer Tour is On!

Tonight Phish played their first ever gig at Fenway Park, a suitably nostalgic location to kick off their 2009 Summer Tour — the band's first tour since calling it quits in 2004.

While I wasn't there in person, I followed along in real-time on PhishTwit along with thousands of other fans.

See above for Fenway videos or read on for the setlist, audio links, reviews, and a recap of the Phish Fenway show.

Phish Fenway Reviews & Photos

Phish Fenway Park Recap

Phish kicked off their Summer tour tonight in true Phish fashion — emerging from the dugouts at Fenway in Red Sox jerseys and singing tthe Star-Spangled Banner from the pitcher's mound.

The Fenway setlist started with no big surprises including Sample, Moma Dance and Chalkdust, before the first new tune of the night, Ocelot. Thanks to the kind souls who stealth taped Phish's rehearsals earlier in the weekend I had a chance to hear them work this one out, and I'm definitely hearing a little bit of Jerry's influence in there.

Following Ocelot the setlist went back to familiar territory with Stash, Bouncing, Poor Heart, Limb by Limb, Velvet Sea, and Disease.

The next tune might have been a bigger surprise were it not for the previously mentioned stealth practice tapes… Destiny Unbound! This one hasn't been played since Nassau Coliseum on February 28, 2003 when it was busted out after a 790 show hiatus. (via ZZYZX)

After Destiny came Character Zero, always a crowd-pleaser (assuming you like to rock out) to close the 1st set.

Second set started off with a Tweezer which was followed by another new song, Light. This is a song I'm really looking forward to based on the way TAB ripped it in Brooklyn.

Two big classics up next in the Fenway setlist: Gin and Bowie and then another new one — Time Turns Elastic. The pundits are expecting big things from this one live. Here's hoping the band can deliver.

Notably Trey played a new guitar for TTE… presumably the same Languedoc G4 that was seen in stealth pics from the studio sessions a few months back.

After TTE was Free, and then a huge bustout — Ballad of Curtis Lowe, last played 8/2/93 at The Ritz Theatre, in Ybor City, FL (not including a soundcheck at Big Cypress).

Curtis Lowe was followed up by classic set closer YEM.

A short break and the band came back for a three-song encore: Cavern, Good Times, Bad Times, and of course Tweezer Reprise.

All in all it seems like a nice selection of standards with a handful of new tunes and a couple of choice bustouts to round the set list. Can't wait for the rest of the tour!

i went to all 3 hamptons too, and they were def. average “shows” but going to 183 shows, i’m sure you’ve seen plenty of bad ones.  i’ve only seen 40, and i’ve seen at least 5 truly poor performances….....

what hooks us is that very show that you get your mind blown. that’s what keeps you coming back.  like how i’m fucking horrible at golf, but when i hit that one amazing shot per round i start thinking i can do it every time, but i can’t…....

fenway sound was terrible, no doubt about that, but it’s to be expected at a venue like that.  it’s about the venue, and experience, rather than sound when we’re talking fenway.  i admit tho, it was quite a bit frustrating.

band is def. past their prime, no doubt, but still a fun time.

quickfromnyc 183 shows huh. Lost their edge???????you are kidding me! that second set was totally insane! Free curtis loew YEM were so well played, Mike was absolutely blowing doors off place. I suppose you don’t like tweezer or bathtub either.  Sounds like your past your prime. Don’t go see them anymore and spare us your idiotic review, cause you obviously don’t know what good is…oh and it was plenty loud where i was

183, and you did not think Fenway killed it??/ It was an amazing open to summer tour.  get up to 7- even thats even better or 185 then post another comment… have a great tour :-)

Thanks a million for the stream since work PC will not allow torrents or sendspace. Checking it out now. Thanks again.

I was on the lawn and at times the sound was too loud and Trey’s jam started to sound more like noise than his usual masterpiece (Limb by Limb and Chalkdust). Overall I was a little disappointed by the show. I was stoked to be there in a monumental venue, hoping for a huge show that I thought fell a little short. Second set blew away the first in my opinion and Tweezer was amazing. The first just didn’t seem to have any flow. Oh well, maybe my expectations were too high after Hampton. I still can’t wait to go to Mansfield.

remember people..if it’s windy out, the sound will always be messed up!..the wind causes resistance to the sound waves..the drawback of outdoor shows..

The band is obviously past there prime. It was great to see them from a nostalgic stand point, but both hampton and fenway were both very average performances (of the 183 shows I’ve attended). And that’s being nice about the new songs. It’s looks like the new album will be just as lame as the last two albums.
They’ve lost their edge.

are you kidding me??  you couldn’t find anywhere where the sound was good?  where were you?  the stadium I was in had killer sound.  Or maybe I’m just so happy to be able to see them play that I don’t have time to complain about sound quality in each section.  geesh.  and I suppose you were cold and wet too?  whah…

We were in the loge section on the 3rd base line.  Sound was terrible.  We were in a dead spot.  The main stage sound was probably fine if you were closer.  But back by us it was bad.

They had additional PA speakers pointed towards he stand, but they didn’t seem to be on or working properly.

I also think the new sound guy is not as good on the mix.  It was hard to hear Mike unless he was soloing.  I miss Languedoc on the sound board.

Sound ranged from mediocre to terrible depending on where you were. I walked around looking for a sweet spot, but really the whole place sucked. This is why music should not be performed in baseball stadiums.

I want to know how the sound is. I saw Jimmy Buffett there and it SUCKED.
