Introduction: The Phish Halloween Album Teaser (September 28th, 2009)

Today the Festival 8 site on Phish.com was updated with yet another teaser animation, only this time instead of teags sayg the location, they're teasing the Halloween cover album.

The new site features a haunted gallery of 99 albums, each a possibility for the musical costume, and each a possible victim of an unfortunate demise.

A handful of albums have already been killed off, and there should be a lot more killing over the next few weeks as the welcome card promises Phish will “play the last record left alive.”

Gotta admit I was pleased to see both of my top choices — Appetite for Destruction and Exile on Main Street — made the list. Figure Appetite is a long-shot but Exile could have a chance.

Place card for Phish Halloween album teaser

Though I doubt this will be quite as uproar-inducing as the Halloween map, it's sure to keep the Festival 8 buzz going strong. Plus it'll also give you a chance to study up on the remaining possibilities (rumor has it there will be 8 albums left when the fest begins) and get familiar with the material, whatever it may be.

WARNING: Spoilers & speculation below. Proceed at your own risk.

Update: The Grateful Living (September 29th @ 12:11 am)

I'm sure this means nothing, but one eagle-eyed fan has noticed that the Grateful Dead are listed as the “Grateful Living” in the xml config file that's driving the gallery. Hmmm… certainly wouldn't mind if American Beauty is “the last record left alive.”

Update: The Grateful Living Part 2 (September 29th @ 2:41 am)

There's a comment below about the Grateful Dead thing pointing out that the word “living” is used in the xml file to denote albums that are still in the mix. I realized that, but in this case it's not just the <stateofbeing> node that says living, but the <title> node as well.

That said, the reader's comment opened my mind up to a much more likely theory. Someone did a search and replace on that xml file, replacing all occurrences of “dead” with “living” — only they didn't select match case — and so the “Grateful Dead” became the “Grateful living.” Note also the lowercase “l” which I incorrectly noted as an uppercase “L” above.

So in effect, I'm still sure it means nothing… other than that speculating on Phish teaser animations is a great way to waste time.

Update: The Grateful Living Part 3 (September 29th @ 1:36 pm)

The Grateful Dead are now listed correctly in the .xml file. Case closed.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 10:36 pm)

Born to Run Languedoc

Strange things are afoot in the haunted gallery, as a number of album covers have started to get a Phish-themed makeover.

  • Phish are in the sardine can on Hello Nasty
  • The hot dog vendor on Pretzel Logic is sporting a viking hat
  • The Boss is playing a Languedoc
  • Trey and Page are moving a keyboard on Moving Pictures
  • T-Rex is now T-rey
  • Tom Petty is wearing a Phish shirt
  • Mike Gordon has joined the Ramones (added 10/7)
  • Rage Against the Machine is now Page Against the Machine (added 10/9)
  • Fishman is on the cover of Exile on Main Street (added 10/10)
  • Ghost in the Machine is now Story of the Ghost in the Machine (added 10/15)
  • AC/DC Back in Black is now AC/DC Bag (added 10/15)
  • Page is in the rearview mirror on the Minutemen album (added 10/16)
  • Fishman's head has been added to one of the Electric Ladyland ladies (added 10/16)

Just as it was starting to feel really repetitive, this is a great twist to keep things interesting.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 11:36 pm)

Original Blind Faith album cover

A commenter below just inquired if anyone noticed that a “new album” had been added to the gallery

Well it's a new album cover, but not a new album. That's the original cover image from Blind Faith's self-titled debut. Rumor has it the naked young girl is Ginger Baker's daughter, but whoever it is she didn't make the cut. The cover was banned in the USA where it was sold with the “bland, but shopper-friendly, band photo.”

Update: Album YouTube Links (October 7th @ 3:23 pm)

Well this is interesting. Some of the albums in the xml config file have been updated to include YouTube links.

I'll give you one guess how many albums got the special treatment…

  1. AC/DC, Hells Bells from Back in Black
  2. Aerosmith, Sweet Emotion from Toys In The Attic (by Gordon/Kottke)
  3. Arcade Fire, Wake Up from Funeral
  4. David Bowie, Oh You Pretty Things from Hunky Dory
  5. David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust from Five Years Live
  6. Led Zeppelin, Going to California from Zeppelin IV
  7. The Band, Up On Cripple Creek from The Band
  8. Clash, Clampdown from London Calling

I sure hope these aren't the finalist because they seem to have forgotten GNR :)

Update: Festival 8 Numerology (October 7th @ 7:17 pm)

Just came across some interesting numerology observations from PTer Sixtwenty294.

8 ball
  • Moving Pictures is Rush's 8th album
  • Escape is Journey's 8th album
  • Kiss Alive II is Kiss's 8th album
  • Tonight's the Night is Neil Young's 8th album
  • Goodbye yellow brick road is Elton John's 8th album (including a live album)
  • Hot Rats is Frank Zappa's 8th album (including comilations) Thx Jeff G.

Plus, they changed 8 album covers — Blind Faith, T.Rex, Springsteen, Beastie Boys, Ramones, Steely Dan, Rush, and Tom Petty. And as noted above, 8 albums have videos.

That's a whole lot of eights. Nice work Sixtwenty294.

Update: Albums with 8 Songs (October 8th @ 12:11 am)

Got some more 8's thanks to a comment from Bryan Lasky — the albums with 8 songs

  • Boston | Boston
  • Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
  • Black Sabbath | Paranoid
  • Metallica | Master Of Puppets
  • Led Zeppelin | IV (Zoso)
  • Pixies | Come On Pilgrim
  • Van Morrison | Astral Weeks
  • Television | Marquee Moon
  • Leonard Cohen | I'm Your Man (eliminated)
  •

Update: YouTube Links Part 2 & 8 Letter Names (October 8th @ 4:55 pm)

A few things to note here.

First, the mis-linked Arcade Fire and Clash videos from yesterday were updated in the xml. Plus, a bunch of additional video links were added some time today. These include…

  1. Frank Zappa, Cosmik Debris from Apostrophe
  2. Led Zeppelin, Misty Mountain Hop from Zeppelin IV
  3. Metallica, Master of Puppets from Master of Puppets
  4. Minutemen, Jesus And Tequila from Double Nickels On The Dime
  5. Nirvana, Lithium from Nevermind
  6. Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb from The Wall
  7. Radiohead, Everything In Its Right Place from Kid A
  8. Rush, YYZ from Moving Pictures
  9. Violent Femmes, Blister In The Sun from Violent Femmes
  10. Yes, I've Seen All Good People from The Yes Album

Next, if you've been enjoying the numbers game and were miffed that there were 10 new videos and not 8, there's a comment from Lorenzo below that I think you'll like — it's the artists on the list with 8 letter names

  • Bob Dylan
  • Bob Seger
  • Brian Eno
  • Firehose
  • Pavement

Update: Electric Ladyland Album Cover (October 8th @ 8:13 pm)

Official Electric Ladyland album cover
Original Electric Ladyland album cover
Linda Eastman Hendrix Experience Alice in Wonderland

Here's an update for the dudes in the front row, and this one actually is riveting.

The official Electric Landyland album cover (left) has been replaced with the original UK cover (center) featuring a harem of late sixties babes. Once again, banned in the USA and elsewhere.

Notably, Hendrix didn't want this cover or the blurry red and yellow mugshot. Instead he'd requested they use a Linda Eastman photo (right) of the Experience sitting with some kids on the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park. Given a vote, I'd have chosen the babes.

Update: Links to Album Streams (October 9th @ 12:52 pm)

For your listening pleasure, I've stated linking up some of the albums below to free, legal streams on Grooveshark. Unfortunately most of their playlists are incomplete or have tons of duplicates, so you basically need to create each one by hand which is time consuming.

That said, if anyone's feeling ambitious and wants to take on an album or two it'd be greatly appreciated. Just shoot me an email or post a comment with the playlist link.

Update: Fall Tour Dates Announced (October 9th @ 10:32 am)

Nothing to do with albums or 8's, but Fall Tour Dates have been announced.

Update: Video Links Part 3 (October 9th @ 1:30 pm)

Got another handful of additional video links that were added some time today. These include…

  1. Blind Faith, Can't Find My Way Home from Blind Faith
  2. Genesis, In the Cage from Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  3. Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced from Are You Experienced
  4. King Crimson, Talking Drum from Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. Van Morrison, Cyprus Avenue from Astral Weeks

Update: Albums with Horns (October 13th @ 12:31 am)

The rumor mill is rapidly churning with the notion that there will be horns at Festival 8, presumably for the musical costume. Here's a list of albums you might be hearing if that rumor pans out…

  • Curtis Mayfield | Superfly Soundtrack
  • Chicago | The Chicago Transit Authority
  • David Bowie | Ziggy Stardust
  • Frank Zappa | Apostrophe
  • Frank Zappa | Hot Rats
  • Michael Jackson | Thiller
  • Miles Davis | A Tribute To Jack Johnson
  • Pink Floyd | The Wall
  • Radiohead | Kid A
  • Steely Dan | Pretzel Logic
  • T.Rex | Electric Warrior

  • The Band | The Band (aka Brown Album)
  • The Clash | London Calling
  • The Police | Ghost in the Machine

Meanwhile, I'm generally averse to Hitler but the video above cracks me up every time so I'm just embedding to avoid having to go to YouTube — and for the 3 people who still haven't seen it.

Update: Mike's Hotline Hint & more (October 13th @ 11:15 pm)

A few things to report, aside from the fact that CCR, ZZ Top, and the Ramones were killed off today.

First, Mike's hotline is offering a very Gordonesque “hint” at the Halloween album — singing a line from the chorus of the Go-Gos Out Lips Are Sealed. Personally I prefer the Hilary / Haley Duff version. Hear Mike for yourself at 212-330-9092.

Added 10/14 @ 5:45 pm Lots of message board chatter that lips could be a thinly veiled Stones reference.

Added 10/19 @ 8:23 pm “Our lips are sealed” is a lyric in the song Elevation by Television. Coincidence?

Second, I've started a gallery of Festival 8 posters that's already got great art by folks like AJ Masthay, Jamie Huntsman, and Not Pollock.

Finally, I'm doing a Series II Page bobblehead giveaway. This one features Page as The Chairman of the Boards, my favorite of all the bobbles so far.

Update: Phish Festivalography on Sirius (October 14th @ 12:10 am)

Not sure if I'm late to the game on this but I just got wind of a cool sounding show on Sirius called “Phish Festivalography.” It's a four part series starting Thursday the 15th at 9:00 pm Eastern (with replay at 2 am).

Hosted by Jonathan Schwartz from “Gone Phishin',” the exclusive series will cover Phish's festival history in words and music. Sounds promising.

Update: Miner's Case for Ziggy Stardust (October 14th @ 3:00 pm)

Spiders from Mars Fleece

Mr. Miner over at Phish thoughts has made the case for Ziggy Stardust:

For the elaborate theatrics and space-aged costumes alone, Ziggy Stardust would make a superb spectacle for the Halloween set. But beyond the glamorous show this album could provide, the music and lyrics of Bowie’s record fit perfectly with Phish’s place in time.

Read Miner's full post for more.

In other news, Zeppelin IV was just eliminated! Kinda figured that one would stick around for a while but alas, it's gone.

Update: The Album Elimination Set (October 14th @ 5:15 pm)

Got what I think might be a fun concept that revolves around the premise / rumor that there will be 8 albums left at Festival time.

Imagine you have just woken up from a dream. In that dream you were at Festival 8 and the band threw a major curve-ball 2nd set Friday, eliminating albums by playing 6 covers plus a cover encore — one from each of the 7 albums NOT being played.

So for example, in my dream it might look something like this:

  1. Detroit Rock City (Kiss)
  2. Communication Breakdown (Zeppelin)
  3. Poem 58 (Chicago)
  4. Counting Out Time (Genesis)
  5. Every Little Thing She Does (Police)
  6. Rip this Joint (Stones)
  7. Encore: Paradise City (GNR)

Stream a compilation of this fake set

Notably, I mixed and matched what I'd want them to play with what I think they'd play, which I think makes a huge difference, and is probably how a real dream would unfold.

Also note that I believe it's highly unlikely that they'll eliminate the final albums this way*, but given this concept, what would they play in your dream? Post a comment below once you've given it some thought.

* My insane hypothesis here, in case you were wondering, is that they will have a real life version of the haunted gallery. This will be designed by the guy who did the installations at Hampton and Bonnaroo. Throughout the first two days of the fest actors will come in and kill these larger than life covers with real chainsaws, hatchets, spurting blood, etc. The final 3 or so will be killed on stage in a theatrical experience immediately preceding the costume set Saturday.

Update: The Dead are Dead (October 14th @ 8:50 pm)

Crying Dancing Bear

Oh man, you step away for a few hours and they go and kill off the good ol' Grateful Dead. I didn't think for a second they were going to play this, but I wouldn't have complained. For those who were hoping for this one, the only solace I have to offer is this: Terrapin from Virginia Beach '98. Enjoy.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Bands with 4 Members (October 15th @ 12:40 am)

Here's an interesting observation from Greg below: all the bands phish has covered have been 4 members (at one point or another). If that trend continues, here's who you might hear:

  • Black Sabbath
  • Blind Faith
  • Boston (technically)
  • Genesis (v1.0)
  • Kiss
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Metalica
  • Modern Lovers
  • Pink Floyd
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Television
  • The Clash
  • The Doors
  • The Pixies
  • U2
  • Van Halen
  • Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Greg goes on to jokingly note, “That's 16 bands left. 2 weeks left. 16 divided by 2 is 8!!!!!” Fascinating. Just added the Clash and there are now 17 bands in the list rendering Greg's joke humorless.

Update: Handicapping the Albums (October 16th @ 9:40 am)

I don't think anyone's actually keeping books, but Eric Wyman and Matt Dubno have been handicapping the remaining albums. Here are a few of their picks:

  • Sticky Fingers | Matt @ 20:1, Eric @ 3:2
  • Exile on Main Street | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 12:1
  • Moving Pictures | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 25:1
  • Hot Rats | Matt @ 12:1, Eric @ 75:1
  • Electric Ladyland | Matt @ 8:1, Eric @ 3:1

See more handicapping action at 99 Halloweens.

Update: The Campground Albums (October 16th @ 11:50 am)

So this latest rumor has been circulating a bit but the din finally got loud enough that I've decided to post it. People are now saying that there will be 8 campgrounds at Festival 8, one for each of the finalist albums. Here's the rumored list…

  1. David Bowie | Hunky Dory
  2. Genesis | The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway | SBD
  3. Jimi Hendrix | Electric Ladyland
  4. King Crimson | Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. MGMT | Oracular Spectacular
  6. Prince | Purple Rain
  7. Radiohead | Kid A
  8. Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street

I'd take it for what it is, a rumor, but that list pretty well thought out. As I'm sure is the case for most folks, there's a few of my favorites (Stones, Jimi, Genesis), a few I'm not so big on (Radiohead, MGMT), a few I could go either way on (Bowie, Prince), and one I've yet to hear (King Crimson).

Crowd favorite Ziggy Stardust is noticeably absent, leading some to speculate that they'll play a non-campground album. But I'm not so sure as that would mean they'd be playing an album that was previously eliminated, a concept that didn't go over so well with California on the teaser map.

Finally, I saw a great suggestion on another board — the band could go around the campsites late-night and serenade each with a performance of a few tunes from their respective albums. That's probably about the only thing that would make me question my hotel decision, but time will tell.

Update: Much on the Horizon at 8 (October 16th @ 4:40 pm)

Update: The Killer Album Theory (October 16th @ 6:20 pm)

Okay. Here's a theory (not mine) that's either totally obvious or totally out-there, or perhaps a little bit of both.

Let it Bleed Album Cover

The obvious part of the theory (or at least already been discussed here and there) is that the Halloween album is not actually on the list.

The out-there part is that the 100th album is actually the murderer — the one doing all the killing — and that album would be, pun intended, Let it Bleed… the Stones 8th album.

Look forward to your comments on this one.

Hat tip to Cassidy B. for the theory.

Update: Ryan Kerrigan's 8 Balls, David Welker Scratchboard (October 17th @ 5:49 pm)

Ryan Kerrigan Festival 8 Ball

Just added some great stuff to the Festival 8 poster gallery including a set of hand-painted 8 balls by Ryan Kerrigan and an incredible scratchboard piece by David Welker (who also did the Rift cover).

If this is any indication of the type of stuff people will be slinging at the Festival, I might just need an extra suitcase.

Nice work gents.

Update: Pictures at an Exhibition (October 18th @ 11:16 am)

A few followup thoughts to the 100th album theory have emerged in the comment thread below, including one comment from ben who suggests Alice Cooper's 1971 album Killer as the 100th album, noting also that Alice is playing in town on the 30th.

ELP Pictures at an Exhibition

Second, and perhaps more intriguing, is this comment from stealingtime about ELP's 1971 album Pictures at an Exhibition

I doubt they'd play this, as the album has hardly any guitar (listen here) but man does that album cover bear striking resemblance to the Phish gallery or what?

Update: Vendor Map of Festival Grounds (October 19th @ 5:30 pm)

Update removed. Sorry.

Update: Upper Playground / Sonic Living “Day 1” (October 19th @ 10:15 pm)

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8
Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Came across this link on PhishPosters.com tonight. I'm not familiar with either Upper Playground or Sonic Living, both of whom have logos on these, but someone on PhishPosters is guessing that these are Festival 8 laminate designs.

These aren't quite as cool as past laminates if that's the case, though there's plenty of cool stuff in the UP news feed like this brilliant photo gallery of an urban narcolepsy epidemic.

Update: 10:38 pm Interesting. There's a poster gallery on the Sonic Living site that includes these images, sans text. The guitar gun is by Jeremy Fish, the cityscape by Marco Zamora, and the bike by Sam Flores.

Despite the update, I'm still not sure what the examples above are supposed to be . Post a comment if you have any ideas.

Update: Seeking photos from Phish fans (October 21st  @ 1:18 pm)

Local Indio paper The Desert Sun is looking for great photos from past Phish festivals. See here for details and an email address to send pics.

Update: Festival 8 to be Filmed in 3D (October 21st  @ 2:04 pm)

3D glasses

I heard this rumor from a pretty reliable source last week, but this recent PT post seems to confirm it: Festival 8 will be filmed in 3D! Pretty sure that doesn't mean a simulcast, but it could mean a sweet ass IMAX film down the road along the lines of U2 3D or my other favorite band, the Jonas Brothers.

Update: Burble & Borealis (October 22nd @ 5:22 pm)

Here are two of the amazing interactive sculptures that might be melting your face at Festival 8…

Burble

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A spectacular, futuristic sculpture of helium-filled balloons packed with LEDs and infrared sensors that floats above spectators in response to infra-red signals and its immediate environment.

Borealis

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A mirage-like installation that glows with colours and ebullient patterns created in response to the competing and collaborative voices, music and screams of people nearby.

Update: Behold the Plasma Cutter (October 23rd @ 5:00 pm)

Here's some more neat stuff the likes of which you just might see at Festival 8. It's two amazing metal sculptures from the portfolio of San Francisco based Dan Das Mann. As you can see, he's not only a genius with the plasma cutter, but also knows a thing or two about melting faces.

Update: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings @ F8? (October 24th @ 10:30 pm)

Here's a rumor that, if true, has been of the better kept secrets of this whole affair.

As posted in this comment, word is Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will join Phish for the musical costume at Festival 8.

The video at right should give you a good idea of Ms. Jones's superb vocals and the Dap-Kings funk / soul musical stylings.

No complaints from this guy if this is legit, which I believe it be. Especially if it means an Exile on Main Street (or Let it Bleed) costume.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Colossal Testaments in Steel and Stone (October 25th @ 3:00 pm)

Here's a trio of large-scale sculptures from Rosanna Scimeca, another artist you might be seeing at 8. According to her site, Rosanna likes to “explore how the observer may interface, interact, and identify with her installations.” Yeah, I can give her a preview: they're going bug out.

Update: Pollock Halloween Mask + HeadCount Trivia Contest (October 26th @ 1:45 pm)

Today Jambands.com posted information about a Pollock Halloween mask to be available at the WaterWheel table gallery throughout Festival 8. Plus, HeadCount will be running a trivia contest and the grand prize winner will get an uncut sheet of masks with a  one-of-kind Pollock doodle.

Sample trivia question: “What town does Trey Anastasio, John Popper of Blues Traveler and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors all hale from?”

Pollock Festival 8 Teaser

There's also the recently surfaced image at right, which I believe to be a teaser for a Pollock Festival 8 poster, though I'm not 100% on that.

Poster or not, can't wait to see the mask! In the mean time, here's a growing Festival 8 poster gallery.

Update: Stage Photo & Viewing Platform Sketch (October 26th @ 6:45 pm)

Today Twitter user @BathtubGym posted what I believe to be the first pic of the stage setup, as well as a sketch of the viewing platform for the Dan Das Mann installation.

I'm sure I'll say this ten times over the next 2 days, but I can't believe I just got MORE excited.

Update: Festival 8 to be Simulcast Live on Sirus (October 26th @ 9:54 pm)

This just in: all 8 sets of Festival 8 including the musical costume and acoustic set will be simulcast live on JamOn, channel 17 on SIRIUS!!!

Not a subscriber? Good news… you can sign up for a free trial and hear the simulcast without spending a dime. Huge thanks to whoever is responsible for arranging this. Jam On!

Update: They Have Created Fire (October 27th @ 1:56 am)

If you're anything like me, you're somehow riveted by fire — and you'll definitely be making it a point to see this six-pack fire artists rumored to be appearing at Festival 8:

Update: Glitches, XML fun, & Gordon's Hotline (October 28th @ 1:18 pm)

The Wall

Looks like there was some sort of glitch in the album teaser on Phish.com for a bit when Apostrophe was killed — as the gallery was only showing living albums, and the Wall and Exile had gone missing. All seems back to normal now, though the Wall is indeed dead as seen at right.

Also appears that someone's having some fun with the xml file — with Michael Jackson changing to “Michael Jackson Is Alive“ and Yes changing to “Yes Yes Yes Yes.“ — but I'm not reading into either of those too much.

Speaking of having fun, Gordon's hotline (212-330-9092) has had two recent updates, the latest playing off the 100th album theories that are floating around.

And last but not least, I just checked into my flight for tomorrow. If anyone's on Southwest from Chicago at 12:35, hit me up for a free drink coupon. I'll be the dork carrying the poster tube.

Update: Jamtopia Meetup | Friday. Setbreak. Picnic Area. (October 28th @ 4:18 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

Okay, let's make this thing official.

After extensive reviews of the map and comments, I believe the best time and place to meet is setbreak on Friday at the picnic area. It's at the back of the concert field Page side.

That way if people want to hit the Honey Bucket or grab food or drinks or whatever it's all convenient.

Update: Get a FREE scoop of Ben & Jerry's (October 28th @ 5:24 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

I just got an email from Ben & Jerry's with some great news.

In addition to being huge fans of Jamtopia, Vermont's finest ice cream purveyors will be offering free scoops of Phish Food at Festival 8.

All you have to do is “particip8” in a social action with one of the charities at the WaterWheel booth (e.g. sign a petition, make a donation) to get your free delights.

Sweet.

Update: More Stage Photos (October 28th @ 6:25 pm)

Got some more stage pics, this time from Twitter user @briankarol:

I'm thinking they need more speakers!

Update: Festival 8 Wristband (October 29th @ 12:11 am)

Festival 8 wristband

I'm not sure if this is a staff wristband or just the standard issue, but either way it looks pretty sweet sauce. If the production values of this wristband are any indication this is really going to be one hell of a shindig.

Meanwhile, as I write this, Van Morrison and Zeppelin were killed off. Only 9 remain. Can't get there soon enough.

Update: Festival 8 Shout-out on Conan (October 29th @ 8:08 am)

Well this is surreal. Masterfully bearded Phish fan Rob Howard was in the Late Night crowd yesterday and got interviewed by Conan to “promote Phish.”

As you'll see when you watch the video, Conan had a little something extra planned to help get the word out about Festival 8.

Props to Rob for representing Phish — and the great state of Illinois :)

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Finally on My Way (October 29th @ 10:00 am)

Well I'm just about to take off for the airport. This has been an amazing 30+ days tracking the album teaser and I'm almost sad to see it end. Thank you all for your awesome participation: coming up with crazy numerology, alerting me to updates, and just waxing philosophical in the comments.

As soon as I land I'll start up a new post with updates and recaps from the Festival. Hope to keep the great comments going there, so I'll be having a giveaway — a little something that's sure to light up any room. I think you'll like it.

Update 7pm: New Festival 8 Recap post is live.

Update: Phish to Play Exile on Main Street (October 31th @ 3:00 pm)

The Phishbill is out and it's been confirmed, Phish will be dressing up as the Rolling Stones and covering Exile on Main Street tonight.

2033 Comments so far

“That said, “Marquee Moon” is gradually becoming my #1 choice. That album is SO GOOD.”

It might be good but it’s not happening…Gordo is not a fan of Television, confirmed on his solo tour.  He saw them once and hated it.

Hey Todd, i’m from the Region (Northwest Indiana) and make it up to Chicago quite a bit,.. Got my tix. for Cobo today, are u goin?
Anyways, just want to send an invite to get together and have a beer sometime.. bullshit a little about Phish, and whatnot.. curious as to what u do for actual work! :p lol! Ever go check out Chicago’s best kept secret, Mr.Blotto?? Have fun @ the 8!!

i think t.rex would be perfect - suits their musical style, musicianship, vocal styles, would sound great live, and it just sounds like the kind of music they like to cover.

@GMahal
“Bob Marley??

Now THAT is funny!!

Maybe if it were 1985?”

What on Earth do you mean? Bob’s music is timeless and classic. Are you implying Marley is some sort of cheesy eighties music? If so, you’re dead wrong.

Quite sure I have no idea what you’re getting at.

I heard a rumor the ‘main streets’ are the album name and the ‘cross streets’ are the track titles.  This would be a setup like Burning Man and would work great for finding your way in the campground.

“Come find us we are at Electric Ladyland between Crosstown Traffic and Voodoo Chile”

8 days - cannot wait!

@PiNT, I love you bro. Have a Great Fest and be safe! if they tease Rock n Roll all Nite (or Army of 1,) think of ur brothers that couldn’t make it out to Cali!

@Todd,.. Thank you. This is Great! Can u put the recent “updates” in descending order too???

@Rikki.. you SOB! I can’t believe u lost my number,.. Catch up with me in BOSTON..

;P

Dig this Link http://www.pinkfloyd.net/

Steely is dead!! see you indio!

No more pretzel logic…

The 100th album in the Soundtrack to YoGabba Gabba on Ice.  it’s a real killer.

Your Not “Calling” it if you give four choices… :p that’s like trying to call the set-opener and giving four choices and then when they play chalkdust, saying “SEE!! I called it!” you gotta pick one and stand by it.

There won’t be any “pretzels” @ the Ocho… Logically of course.

it’s a gig about 8’s… Infinity.. Halloween.. and Date’s.. future dates.. like the Tour Opener in COBO!!! I’m goin!!! and I’ll get the first Hallowed’8 Break-out mid-set 1!!!!!  and about Viking Fishman falling out of a Space-ship a la Run Like Hell with 2001 teases…

Holy Balls, i have no idea what album they’re gonna play. At all, listed in that 99 or not. I have ideas about what albums they’re not gonna play cus they Killed them already, but.. your brother sits at home with his beatles and his stones… PHISH PH!SH PHiSH

Hi Trey. I can’t believe u told that reporter you don’t read this stuff!! You’re eating this UP!!! thats why u guys do it!!

Think they’ll cover a bunch of the old Halloween stuff through-out?
That’d be fine! The Drowned i saw @ Deer creek this year was BOMB!

PS. Phan v1.0 v2.0, v3.0 and side-projects. I can’t help it that I like the music these guys make.

At this point, I would really like to see them put the kibosh on one of the rumored Elite Eight.  That would make things much more interesting…

I remember delivering a letter back in the ‘80s.  From one of his biggest fans, a red headed Ital boy.  I bet Zep I.  Sooooo easy to pleeze, my gun your squeeze.  Love in October.

It’s getting Serious now…...Steely Dan is DEAD!!!

@PiNT re: This is too entertaining to be free… Todd, I should send you some money!

No need to send money.

That said, I’ll probably wear a Jamtopia shirt to at least one day of the fest so if you see me and feel compelled to buy me a glass of FOAM I’ll gladly drink it.

TL

P.S. Again, thanks to all the people who have taken the time to visit, comment, and send emails of thanks. Really flattered by how well received this has been.

and Pretzel Logic has been unraveled…

Maybe there is a 100th album and all the other albums got the death penalty when Joe’s Garage made music illegal.

RIP Pretzelface!

Since before the album game even begin, I’ve been claiming “Ziggy Stardust” and “London Calling” as the two most likely albums and I would still love either.

That said, “Marquee Moon” is gradually becoming my #1 choice. That album is SO GOOD.

Ricky just lost your number…

@yemtig
I was concerned about the fire/stove sitch to but I think they clarified pretty well on the FAQ. NO open flame as in charcoal bbq, bomb fire etc.
But Coleman stoves and backpacking or any stove that uses propane(thats whats in those little screw on canisters) are allowed.
But theres a limit on how many lbs of propane u can bring but 2-3 cans should be more than enough for 3 days.

At least thats what I gathered, Im sure butane canisters are ok to, they just dont want sparks flyin.

I hope they play MGMT just to watch all of your holier than thou heads explode, it’s gonna be hilarious.

In all seriousness I wouldn’t mind at all of they played it, but I really really really want The Clash!!!

My three cents:

First, I want to say how fun this discussion/speculation has been.  I’m taking three days off from work for the festival, but I have probably lost an additional three days’ worth of productivity reading all these comments, which I guess means I’m a slow reader.

Second, I don’t buy into this 100th Album theory.  They already had their fun and pranked us with the whole California being eliminated thing.  To do this again with a 100th album and creating such a stir would be—in my opinion—a little too unoriginal.  Furthermore, it would be pretty unnecessary to create this list of 99 albums just to throw us off the scent of the actual costume.  There are tons of great albums that were omitted from the list, but are also so many great albums ON the list that I feel pretty confident it’s one of them.  Regardless of whether it ends up being a 100th album, I will say that all this speculation and excitement has turned me on to some new music that I’m really diggin.

Third, I want to address this supposed Final 8 Albums leak.  This “leak” came to our attention about a week ago, right?  If it’s not for real, then no bid deal—fun practical joke.  If it is for real, then consider this:  why would they (“they” referring to those responsible for the Last Record Left Alive game…not necessarily the band) have a predetermined list of 8 finalists a full two weeks before the festival??  It must mean that they have something special planned for those 8 albums AT the festival, giving credence to the whole 8 campsites theory and (perhaps) the map.

In my amateur opinion, I think the album must fit three criteria:
1) Critical acclaim.  I may be wrong on this, but I feel like it’s gotta be a classic album that has already solidified its place in rock n roll history.
2) High energy and fun.  Although a costume like The Wall would be a truly awesome production—and I’d love to see it—I think the songs and the album have to be something that Phish can really rock.
3) Staying power.  At least a couple of the songs must have the potential to become a permanent part of their repertoire.  I think that the previous costumes all had a song or two that theyve played occasionally/frequently since their debut…can somebody back me up on that?  I guess Dark Side would be an exception, if that counts.

8 more days…giddy up!

not so logical now…...axed!!!!  go ziggy

Some things I’ve notice no one take into consideration yet.

1) “left Alive”. Could that refer to a band which hasn’t lost any members to death?

2) Look at the front of the table the invitation is sitting on. Notice the backwards “C” shape. Could that be Zappa’s facial hair turned sideways? could that bear a striking resemblance to King Crimson’s artwork? Could it be a “hole in the wall”? I originally thought it was the Omega sign turned sideways (The Police).

3) Why is the graphic for the donuts for Festival 8 have a really small circle on top of a really big circle? I always found that a design to be a bit suspicious.

4) Could the skull on the invitation mean something?

5) Trey supposedly gave a radio interview stating a 100th album was the one killing off the others.  Now assuming he’s not f’ing with us, which he ALWAYS is, could the killer and the last album left alone go into a death match on a jumbotron?

5b) There’s only one cover art that has a mirror in it.  And people have assumed that’s Fish’s eyes photoshoped into it.  Mayhaps it’s not Fish and a face from the cover art of the 100th record?

5c) Why is it always knives, arrows, and axes used to kill things? Why not bullets or chain saws or grenades? Could the 100th record involve some sort of midevil fair theme?

6) The viking horns are a huge clue, and I don’t think anyone’s gotten close to figuring out what they imply.

Kiss is huge and gigantic and has an army.  And they not being covered.  No argument here, it is what it is.

This is too entertaining to be free… Todd, I should send you some money!

Okay, I’ve figured it out:  It’s the 100th album, aaaaaaaaaaaannnnd,

...it’s The Batman Forever Soundtrack.

Reason 1:  Phish is filming this in 3D.  U2 fimed their Vertigo tour in 3D.  U2 is on the Batman Forever Soundtrack.  I think you see where I’m going with this…

Reason 2:  This is Festival 8.  Sunnny Day Real Estate has a song titled “8” on the Batman Forever Soundtrack.  Yeah… follow the bread crumbs, people.

Reason 3:  Nick Cave has a song called “There Is A Light” on the Batman Forever Soundtrack.  Phish has a killer, even-more-than-usual light show planned for 8.  Coincidence?  I don’t think so.

Reasons 4 and 5:  Mike’s hint was singing the line “our lips are sealed”.  The Flaming Lips have a song on the Batman Forever Soundtrack, AND what was the number one single off the Batman Forever Soundtrack?  “Kiss From A Rose” by… you guessed it: Seal.

Yep.  Concrete.

Pshhh… Ziggy Stardust my ass!

So, if the map that leaked yesterday was real the only album missing from the rumored 8 campsite albums posted on this site last week is MGMT. They also soundchecked Kids from this album at the SPAC show that ended summer tour.

they’re going to cover Minutemen’s album “Double Nickels On A Dime,” no doubt in my mind….any challengers?

Purple Rain…....so many party songs. And “Darling Nikki” a la Fishman for my girl headiest

I have never posted here before, so i appoligise for the length…but i’ve been reading all you hairbrained theories for days and days now.  My excitement for festi 8 is overwhelming me!  I wanted to say that i like the theory about the killer album: MJ, Alice Cooper, and the Rolling Stones all possibilities here. Totally the kind of prank our boys like to pull.  There are so many possiblities and clues through out this whole “album invitation” that no one need to fill our heads with speculation…we can come up with enough bullshit to full a barn.  My original vote was for Pet Sounds, the harmonies are too tough.  Lamb? why had it not been done before..yes the the difficult keys…but page could take it right?  Now both of those albums i would love but would everyone…im not so sure.  i have a theory that they (ie:trey) wants to please us with this.  they like to see us rockin out having a good time…our energy feeds their energy right.  so though it would not by first choice something famillar to everyone like nirvana or kiss (axed), though it might not be your fav “its got a funky beat and i can jam out to it”...get it?  my theory extends on…what about how phish has taken this as an opportunity to inroduce us to new music.  no the tunes may no be fresh off the shelf…but i bet there are but a handful, if any, of people that could say “i knew or have heard everying on the list (for 8).”  sure i was fammiliar with almost all of it…but i have dug deeper into new realms since the release of this invite.  My darkhorse picks are TELEVISION and T.REX! just take a listen to Marquee Moon (tv) and to Jeepster (t.r.) for example…you will see why i not only want the boys to play one of these two albums, but why these two selections are great examples of phish broadening my horizon.  Last,  i must say if i have to make a final choice (though not my fav)...something timeless, something fun, somthing recognisable, something funky…GOODBYE YELLOWBRICK ROAD, ziggystardust?...no Yellowbrick, definately Yellowbrick.
L8

The words “Noobie” and “Newbie” and any other spelling of this fake word, have been official declared assuming, pretentious, arrogant, self- righteous and only used by people who feel a need to prove themselves to complete strangers online that they are a REAL fan.

Not true.  I used the term to differentiate the opinions of those who have achieved a certain expertise worth learning from in contrast to others who may have just begun to learn about a subject matter, where perhaps their opinion is not as valid.  Certainly you cannot deny that some people may know more about a subject than others?

Sorry if it struck a nerve, certainly if you read the post, that wasn’t its intention.

It wasn’t derogatory… it was a differentation.  In the real world, different people acquire different levels of knowledge.  You wouldn’t seek advise from a first year medical student for advise over a proven, practicing medical specialist, would you?

In my somewhat informed opinion (even if it is just myself saying so), they are not going to play Thriller, MGMT, or Kiss Alive II. There certainly are others around who have a more informed opinion than me, and I can listen to them and learn from them, even if they don’t agree with me,  without feeling insulted or bellittled.  But I need some criteria with which to guage thier knowledge of the subject… the easiest way to do that would be to find out how long they’ve followed the band.

Besides, it’s okay to disagree with people, it’s not a confrontation, its debate, and its healthy.  So lets stop creating controversy where it doesn’t exist, and was said before by some very wise poster…  ‘Lets let all feel welcome here’.

Its going to be Ziggy, Genesis, Stones, or Zappa, in that order. In my humble opinion… and everyone has one of them, right?  ;)

I’m thinkin it will be The Yes Album. I’d never heard any Yes (much less their album) but when I looked it up, it just sounds perfect. Only snag is it is only 45 minutes long, which would mean they would have to double the length, something they have not really done with Halloween covers in the past…. but I have a new album to explore thanks to this whole process if nothing else! (maybe that’s what phish want us to do, explore some of these albums…and laugh at other ‘possibilities’)

if you look at the map, the parking areas are named after these albums.:

13 is purple rain
10A is el. ladyland
4 is exile on main st.
5 is lamb lies down on broadway
2 is Kid A
12 is Hunky Dory
6 is Lark’s Tongues

might be one of these, but there is also a space in the bottom right that has been blanked out, hmmm… “the wall” maybe?

8 days 8 hours and 8 minutes until we are enveloped by the blissful sounds of Phish’s first set at festival 8!!! Can’t wait to see you all there. First show since the two days at gorge this year. Phiending!!!

@ Patrick Sweeney

You don’t have to convince me of anything.  You had me at BoC.  And I really think they should add E.T.I. to their live rotation immediately.

@iHeardtheHooverSing

Agreed on all counts.  Not everyone who had a problem with Matt from Chicago is a new fan.  I personally wasn’t attacking his desire to hear a classic rock-n-roll record.  It was the condescension.  Who cares if some new fan thinks there’s a shot at Thriller being played?  If I have to choose between an excitable new fan with a good attitude and an old fan who wastes his time policing blogs for “acceptable” Halloween album predictions…I’ll go with the new guy every time.  And (as long as we are airing grievances) along with “noob”, I could do without the words “wook” and “custie”.

Ryan Dornan and Jay from Tampa: Couldn’t have said it better myself. I like the idea of The Wizard of Oz theme. That would be hilarious.

Three I would love to see:
yellow brick road
pretzel logic (let’s go Barrytown!)
yes

three I hope die today:
Neil young
Zappa
Bruce

if it’s a 100th album I hope it’s:
no code by pearl jam

thanks Todd for the site

I would be happy with most of the albums that are left…  I will be car camping at fest 8 and I am really confused with what cooking things they will allow…  Surely they will allow coleman stoves (made for car camping, duh) but if anyone knows the definitive answer to this question please comment..  Below is the text from the camping faq outling what they allow and don’t allow…

May I make a campfire or use a stove to cook?  Feel free to bring your own food and beverages into the camping area. However, campfires, fire pits, fire cages or any open flames are not allowed anywhere on site. RV’s may use their factory installed interior cooking & climate control devices. Please bring pre-cooked foods, like Chef Piddlydoo’s Sandwich-in-a-Can, now in Ragin’ Cajun Chicken flavor. NO open flame cooking, including beans in a can.

Here are some more details from the Fire Marshall: 1. All cooking appliances shall bear a certification or listing from a nationally recognized test or certification organization. 2. A minimum of 3 feet of clearance shall be maintained at all times while cooking appliance is in use. No combustible material shall be within 3 feet of the cooking appliance. 3. Cooking appliance that only utilizes propane as the fuel source shall be permitted. No wood, charcoal, flammable/combustible liquid cooking appliances permitted. 4. One cooking appliance per camp site shall be permitted 5. Maximum amount of propane per campsite shall not exceed 20 pounds or 48 pounds of water capacity. 6. Cooking appliances shall only be used during the hours of 7:00am to 2:00 am 7. Cooking appliances, when in use, shall not be left unattended.
What would be allowed?
Coleman stove?  Small backpacking stove (with those screw on fuel cannisters)? Or does everything have to be propane???

Just witnessed the death of Superfly

@ohwilson
I’m on board with Purple Rain—great album, why not? I dont know if that would be up to PiNT’s standards though;)

I think the joke here is that we can analyze and prognosticate and we all will have our favorite, but they’ve given us too many choices for us to know for sure. I’m sure they’re getting a kick out of every theory and supportive evidence and random “what if”, I know I sure am.

T. Rex would be the best idea/dance party ever and you KNOW IT!

Surprise, surprise.  PiNT agrees with Matt from Chicago.  Lameness needs company.

@PiNT from 2 time NLCS champs Phillshiies || Oct. 22, 2009 at 09:05 AM

The simple fact that your denouncing KISS makes me sick! you USED to LOVE that band!! You had that poster of Gene Simmons spitting blood,.. used to give u nightmares! member your mom had to take it off your wall one night?!? Maybe your too ‘Noob’ of a fan to see how much KiSS and PHiSH have in common, but, i’m a little older Jedi, I can clue u in.. I think what upsets me most about this post, is, that despite the differences in genres, is the lack of respect for the whole KISS krew - Bob Ezrin, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, the recording studios where they’ve recorded.. KISS has consistently done well across the board. weather or not u care to admit it, that band is HUGE!! GIGANTIC!!

KISS holds honors as one of America’s top GOLD RECORD CHAMPIONS, recording 37 albums over 36 years selling over 100 MILLION albums worldwide. Over thirty years of record-breaking tours around the globe include high-profile appearances at Super Bowl XXXIII, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the 2005 Rockin’ The Corps concert dedicated to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and most recently, the 2009 American Idols Finale before thirty million viewers.

June 22, 1977 - KISS is voted the #1 band in America by Gallup Poll. KISS’s tour of Japan breaks attendance records previously held by The Beatles.

The numbers don’t lie… so, say what you want, but MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of fans can’t be wrong.. you can’t SUCK and accumulate that kind of fan-base, if that were the case, Brittney Spears, and the likes,.. even Michael Jackson,.. would have an Army, and they don’t.

That being said, Kiss is a pop-rock band and PHiSH are masters of the Universe.. Our numbers don’t lie either.. Poll-star stats from 96 thru 2000 prove that!! I’m glad they’re not playing KISS because I’d only want to see it if they did the make-up, lights, all that.. and Mike is no DEMON! :p Whew! enough about KISS

I hope they play “the Wall” - Phish Style.. there’s so many parts for them to stretch out on.. and Don’t they thank the members of Floyd on the notes of A Live One????

Too bad.  Superfly would have been absolutely nasty.

superfly axed

Electric Ladyland!!!! how sweet would it be to hear Trey crank voodoo chile and end with slight return. right up their alley and reminiscent of playin’/ reprise and tweezer reprise, they could even leave the slight return off the halloween set and use it to round out the encore on saturday or sunday—- sleeping monkey/ voodoo child slight return to wrap up the weekend holy @#$%!  this album has horns and keys, short rockin songs long drawn out jams . My life would be complete and I could die happily if I got to hear ‘1983 a merman I should be’. ....“and this machine that we built could never save us thats what they say and they also put this in my face that its impossible for man to live and breath under water….”  what sort of man could live and breath under water maybe a Phish?  or a fishman?  donuts coffee and a little cooke city cream anyone?

BTW, there went Superfly.

Superfly is super gone

superfly has been swatted…

not to mention the funk jam they could do with the grey seal outro into jamaican jerk

@Pint ...I hear you.  I appreciate your perspective, and I agree with you when I hear some of the music my girlfriend’s kids listen to.  However, I also think it’s important for you to realize that new bands with new sounds and new energy ALSO have intense musicality.  MGMT, although popular, DO have musical ability.  It’s not necessarily your cup of tea (or maybe it is…?), but that doesn’t mean they aren’t good musicians writing good songs.  I mean when I think of Phish’s technical ability, I have a hard time coming to grips with Phish 1.0 Phans who don’t see and appreciate just how intricate, technical, and topsy-turvy a band like Radiohead is.
I liken it to when I ask people if they like Radiohead and their response is: Yeah, I love Radiohead!  Don’t they do that “Creep” song?

Yes, they did that Creep song, but the band themselves HATE that song and almost didn’t include it on the album Pablo Honey because of how simple, chintzy, and made-for-airplay it was.  Of course, it also launched their careers.  But the depth of writing, arranging, and performing that has followed is immense, submersive, and as ground-breaking as most of these classic bands.

Are they dark and moody, which can be a turn-off to many folks?  YES.  But to say Radiohead isn’t about the music is… well, ignorant and only points to one of two conclusions: 1) You don’t know much about “the music” you speak so eloquently about, or 2) You just haven’t actually listened to Radiohead.  I am forced, from your posts and legacy of live-show attendence, to assume it is the latter.

If you don’t want Radiohead to be the album, which I doubt it’s going to be anyway, that’s fine.  I am what you would call a Phish Phan 3.0, for sure.  But to assert that I’m not getting the importance of “the music”, just because I’d like to see what Phish does with a Kid A, or Oracular Spectacular over some of these other classic rock albums, is just wrong.

Oh yeah, I get it.

I would suggest checking out OK Computer by Radiohead.  There is real rock and jazz and jam in that album… moreso than Kid A, I grant you, but just because they may not be your to your tastes, don’t insult them or me if the case happens to be that YOU just don’t get it.  I mean, clearly Phish hears something in MGMT, too, as well as Sir Paul does… and I don’t think my understanding of these points is nearly as clear as it is for any of them. My point is, classic, GOOD, musicianship doesn’t always sound the way it was done 20 or 30 years ago.

Besides, the real travesty is them making Kid A the Family Camping area.

AND, to wrap this up, you do sound like a rather intelligent person who obviously, from what I’ve seen has impeccible music taste… perhaps we can grab a bloody mary in Indio?  I’ll be the guy running around naked with a glowstick in his ass.

JK… about the glowstick anyway.

Bob Marley??

Now THAT is funny!!

Maybe if it were 1985?

For me, The Borealis pretty much seals the deal that it’s gonna be Ziggy.

However, I would not complain one bit if we got The Wall.

The 100th album is The Monster Mash. Yep, The Monster Mash.

Scoot G
If you want to get a reference to 8 Artists from The Minutemen’s Double Nickels album, in addition to the 5 artists referenced in History Lesson Part 2, There are also 3 covers on the Album - all of artists also in this rogue’s gallery:
Don’t Look Now - CCR
Ain’t Talkin’ ‘bout Love - Van Halen
Dr. Wu - Steely Dan

Now the problem with forcing this to adhere to some sort of numerological nonsense, is I have to ignore the fact that the title, Double Nickels on the Dime, is a response to Sammy Hagar’s I Can’t Drive 55.  I guess what I am saying is, I don’t completely buy my logic either, but I definitely buy the “100th album theory” as the most probable.

If they were to cover an album containing covers, would that be like, “My imitation of Elmer Fudd imitating Carol Channing?”

If there was a 100th album, wouldn’t Off The Wall make the most sense?

oh, yeah one other thing for PiNT and some others.
The words “Noobie” and “Newbie” and any other spelling of this fake word,
have been official declared assuming, pretentious, arrogant, self- righteous and only used by people who feel a need to prove themselves to complete strangers online that they are a REAL fan. Christ is this 5th grade. Don’t worry, your cool and we like you and respect you as a human being regardless of how many shows you’ve seen. How many have I seen? Am I 1.0 or 3.0? None of your business, I worship music and Phish shows are where I go to do it.
Lets let all feel welcome here.
peace

These lyrics are kinda fitting for the state of Phish and trey by coventry—they kind of sum up the change he had to go through. As does Yellow brick road.

Not to mention the way it builds and climaxes with the tension and guitars is extremely Phish-esque.

The roses in the window box
Have tilted to one side
Everything about this house
Was born to grow and die
Oh it doesn’t seem a year ago
To this very day
You said I’m sorry honey
If I don’t change the pace
I can’t face another day
chorus
And love lies bleeding in my hand
Oh it kills me to think of you with another man
I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan
But my guitar couldn’t hold you
So I split the band

Love lies bleeding in my hands
I wonder if those changes
Have left a scar on you
Like all the burning hoops of fire
That you and I passed through
You’re a bluebird on the telegraph line
I hope you’re happy now
Well if the wind of change comes down your way girl
You’ll make it back somehow

Now for Yellow Brick road—the really high singing hook—I could totally see trey replacing the vocals with a killer guitar line.

Gordon could sing benny and the jets—-for sure.

and fishman could do candle in the wind.

also, its a double album. they have done two double albums.

the last album they did was Darkside—which has a wizard of oz correlation.

Songs like The Ballad of Danny Bailey is in the same vain as Curtis Lowe.

this album crosses genres—has tons and tons of piano and guitar.

My money is on this album:lyrically its the direction they have been going, musically it has a phish feel—and the subject matter is fitting for Phish 3.0

Holding out hope it Electric Ladyland! There are some horns.

@larry
“its shaping up to be the 8 albums that were already leaked as the finalists”

I only saw 7 on the map, whats the 8th leaked album you speak of.
Todays hits will probably be two obvious ones and two serious contenders, this seems to be the pattern. I dont care if theres a 100th album, Im having a blast guessing whats gonna be last on this list of 99!

Lyrics from the Go-Go’s, Our Lips are Sealed (clue from Gordon)

“Careless talk
Through paper walls
We can’t stop them
Only laugh at them

Spreading rumors
So far from true
Dragged up from the underworld
Just like some precious pearl

Hush, my darling
Don’t you cry
Quiet, angel
Forget their lies”

I am starting to think the 100th album theory has legs.  It seems that Phish likes to mess with our heads.  The 99 albums would be a great way to get people to focus on those albums and not consider the actual album they are planning on playing.  With that, I have no idea what that album would be.  Let It Bleed from the Stones is as good of guess as any.  The last song is You Can’t Always Get What You Want…hmmm.

I really hope they eliminate something from the “rumored list” in the next few days, so that it is wide open again.  Although, with these guys, it’s wide open anyway.  I am not trying to offend anyone, but I really dont want to worry about hearing King Crimson, Radiohead, or Genesis.  Same goes for Elton John or MGMT.  I mean, there are various songs and things I like about these artists, but this is Halloween.  I want to hear something rocking, something I can dance to, and something I can break out the air instruments to!!  I hope it is either Stones, Jimi, Van Halen, Boston, Chicago, Ziggy, etc., or something totally unexpected.  Maybe like a Led Zeppelin II.  I know they’ve covered Ramble On and Moby Dick, but that album kicks ass, and they would crush it!

Listening to the “1999” from 12/31/98 MSG…  Its got great personality!  While I’m sure it was fun, it’s not the most awesome music I’ve heard from Phish.  Now that Story Of The Ghost In The Machine is dead, still leaning to Ziggy, a 100th album, or one of the dead ones to come back to life… like Frankenstein’s monster “ITS ALIVE, ALIVE!!!”

I still don’t think the 100th album “theory” (remember - not a theory at all - just an idea someone had and posted on the Internet) will not come to pass. I think it would feel a bit confusing and cheap to everyone watching this process - and yes, I’ve seen the band before, including 10/31/94.

If it were to happen, why is everyone so sure it would be Let It Bleed? It’s not that great a record, and Phish isn’t going to play a record because of one stupid joke (Bleed…getit?...getit?).

Joe’s Garage - surprised this one was never on the list. I don’t think they’d do it. It’s a great record, but it’s incredibly crass and has all that central scrutinizer bullshit in it.

I think the two artists most conspicuously absent from the list are Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder. If there were a 100th album, my call would be for Songs in the Key of Life or a Marley record.

But I think it’s one of the 99 - London Calling to be specific ;)

“Also, I love The Clash and Im sure Phish does too but vocally there is too much gritty, english accent”

Unlike the White Album…

They’re not trying to do a cunning imitation that you can’t tell apart from the original.

I thought the Police would last longer. That and Zep IV are the only two that have really surprised me thus far.

Every day London Calling becomes more likely to me and it’s still my pick. I’d say Ziggy is my other frontrunner.I still give zero chance to Lamb.

Does anyone else think that Matt from Chicago should dress up like a traffic cone for Halloween… so we can avoid him.

Not sure if this was posted already or not…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScJcMwvwtw8

Trey talks about the festival and halloween pick with Mara Davis.  I didn’t particularly enjoy her interview style, but I took away that Thriller is now definately not a possibility, because he’s so adamant about it being a possibility.

Maybe this is a clue….

What album cover does the background look like?!?!

http://static4.livenation.com/akamai/V2051/images/7/368.jpg

(I don’t believe it for a second…)

Will the cover be something off the wall (Of the haunted gallery of course) - Maybe so - Maybe Not.

It is true they did not say that it would be one of the albums there, and the 100th album thing would not be a shocking twist from our favorite pranksters.

However - after giving a re-listen to the list, I am ready to venture a guess as to the two albums I think are most likely to succeed from the list -

1. Prince. - Yes Prince. The intro to the album would be a total throw down “Dearly Beloved….” - Listen to the track and hear the searing guitar and VERY PHiSH like extended ending to track 1 - Lets Go Crazy! - What an excellent way to kick off the Halloween set, or incite a riot! I haven’t heard much buzz about this album, and I must confess I haven’t heard it in YEARS, but having re-listened in the context of a PHiSH cover, it seems all to obvious to me - the next few tunes give some musical and whimsical fun, but fast forward to I would die 4 u - high energy through an epic ending with Purple Rain.

It is mainstream enough that everyone will have some familiarity with the tunes, yet somewhat of an eclectic choice - Not the obvious Michael Jackson, king of the 80’s, but rather the ever so purple and ever so eclectic star who seemed constantly eclipsed by the gloved one.

Give it a listen, and I bet you will see what I see - It would make an excellent choice.

See you all there.

At risk of sounding ‘marmish’, ... but did any of the newer fans out there bashing those of us calling for a rock and roll proven masterpiece ever stop to think that you could learn a bit from those of us who have been around a while and share the same generational and life experiences as the members of the band?

I personally am thrilled to see so many new fans taking on the band, certainly alot of us 1.0 fans can’t keep up the pace we used to.  And I’d hate to see Phish slip in popularity and not be able to put on the number of shows and awesome festivals like they do.  Without newer fans, its likely Phish doesn’t stay back together.

All us older fans are saying to you post-hiatus fans is… despite all the jokes / goofs / light shows / fireworks / costumes / mood enhancers / glowsticks and such… the first and most important thing about this band is the music.  The quality and quantity of it… there’s no surviving band that can put on such great improvisational rock and roll in such a frequent fashion.  I can enjoy this band’s music as much with my eyes closed as open… the visuals and ‘extra curricular’ mayhem is all bonus.

We 35-45 year old fans cherish this band and the 20 years of memories… we were young when they were young, and we get how much fun it is when you have that energy.  But it was always, and still is, the musicians and musicianship that makes this band stand apart.

So when you say that Phish should play Kiss or Thriller or MGMT, you insult the standards and memories we share wiht Phish.  Those albums might be fun to listen to in retrospect, but to us, they weren’t up to our standards, the standards that made us make this band reach the level of success and capability they (and all of us) enjoy today.

So, newbies,  thanks for loving this band, and taking the torch, with it comes a responsibility, and I welcome seeing someone younger and more energetic take it on.  You have to learn what makes this band great, and its not because of nitrous and molly’s and nugs and ‘sick cool freaky moments’.... its the music, and the musicianship.

So… respect the music, the history, and remember, take care of your shoes.

I’ve written this a couple of times before, but I think that “Candle in the Wind” all by itself nullifies Elton John.  At least I hope it does.  That is one song that I really have NO desire to EVER see Phish play.  I wouldn’t be one of the deserters by any means, but it just doesn’t seem likely.

@waputik -

when I saw Gordon on his solo tour this past fall in Portland, ME, I chatted him up for a few minutes after the show about a few different topics: the chord structure to Backwards Down the Number Line (I argued that there was an Am in the song but he confirmed there are no Am’s, only Em’s), why he/Phish weren’t playing Suskind Hotel & Hap Nappy from the GRAB tour they did & how much I enjoyed that tour (he opened w/ Suskind Hotel the next night!), and yes…I asked him about Joe’s Garage and if there was any truth to the rumor about them trying to do it in ‘94, then not being able to get permission from Zappa’s wife which ended up leading them to do The White Album.  He confirmed that there was something that went on with Joe’s Garage, but went into this 5 minute diatribe that quite honestly lost me about 30 seconds in, about why they couldn’t do it & some other nonesense.  Like, literally, it didn’t make sense.  But I did ask him if they were doing Joe’s Garage, and he, without so much as saying “no”, indicated they were not doing that album.

But I would be tickled fucking pink if they did.

lol #matt from Chicago.  They decided NOT to play Lambs in 95…must have been a reason, don’tchya think?

so is there going to be some kind of jamtopia meet-up at indio?  when and where?

people…i hope it’s the lamb ...my favorite ..
think about it .. phish has an attraction to concept albums on holloween ..

the lamb is conceptual ...it has depth, it’s progressive, and challanging,
in my opinion they’ll play the lamb and if not ..i think exile ..
top5

1.lamb
2.pretzel
3.exile
4.yes album
5.zappa

and if it’s not somthing on that list , than they’ll play the 100th secret album // i go for that theory , it’ll be a very phishy thing to do .

they will play the lamb ...for me it’ll be poetic justice :-)

c’mon television! (whatever though, who cares, it’ll rock regardless)

I dont get why everyone is talking about what the boys are gonna wear for the costume.

They didnt dress up for the other halloween shows.

Thought I would share my realization.  So, Cities by talking heads has been in rotation since the beginning.  In ‘96 they played TH Remain in Light, which does not contain cities. Peaches En Regalia by Frank Zappa has been in rotation since the late eighties.  In ‘09 They will play FZ ‘Apostrophe which does not contain Peaches En Regalia.  Both musical costumes are representations of their early inspirations….....maybe

Btw….Listen to Ziggy now if you havent.  It’s all gonna be epic.

So….(life-long phan here, posted couple days back preaching Ziggy Stardust’s being destiny’s child, blah blah blah…)

Let me bend a few ears on what I think (personally of course ... and with no allegiance whatsoever to the artist ...) is the diggity diggity dankest cover tune yet to be played BUT would rage and fit like a glove in the rotation…?

“Come Sail Away” - Styx

Give it a listen….It’s the ultimate j *** off for both Trey AND Page…

But c’mon? The boys would nail it and the phans would tweak…

My conclusion as to why this has never occurred to them (ie Trey):
Trey’s boyish undying allrgiance to…sadly…Boston…..

(That Boston album is tempting isn’t there…Replete with classics the boys could shred….)

Seriously though…give it a listen - Come Sail Away…I wouldnt waste your time….

PS - Neither will Phish with Boston….VOTE Ziggy!!!

It’s going to be KISS Alive!

So I just want to throw this rumor out there.  Phish warms up for the acoustic set with a special guest set (which is somewhat of a tradition) at the Bridge School show(s) this weekend at Shoreline.  They have played before (which were a blast) and well why not warm up while helping a great cause.  You heard it here first.  Well, second, I tried to start this rumor over on phishhook a few months ago.

exile on main street

end thread

@ Matt from Chicago ......you’re an ass hat and you think inside of the box.

Oops again.  That Cowbell Jam thing was on The Bunny at Coventry, not It.

kboo73, i like your pickup on the Elton John Album, some very similar sounds, and a great mix of all instruments, not just a “Page Set” as some might think.  Would be spectacular to hear “Saturday Nights Allright for Fighting” on Saturday Night wouldn’t it?

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.  (Unless it’s the 100th album).  Or something completely different.  But think of all the Elton “costumes” they could wear (Mickey, all those HUGE eyeglasses, etc. etc.) besides Dorothy and the Tin Man…

Dammit! I can’t tell you guys enough. It’s going to be GYBR.(Still my hopeful thinking) The music, vocals, drama and theme fit perfectly with the band and moment. Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies bleeding, Grey Seal, Sweet Painted Lady(Page on vocals) couldn’t be more perfect. It’s perfectly obscure and familiar at the same time.

Not to mention “Your Sister Can’t Twist. (But She Can Rock n’ Roll)-see Chalkdust Torture(same song-basically). “Social Disease”-classic boogie-woogie number, thick with keyboards and finally… “Harmony” for a closer. “or am I the last surviving FRIEND you know?”-8 reference?

See ya there!

I love the idea of them dressing in Wizard of Oz costumes, and covering “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”.  Fishman as Dorothy, Trey as Scarecrow, Paige as Tin Man, and Gordon as the Cowardly Lion.  eh?

Oops.  Not “how much rad….”  Just “how rad.”

where is this Lamb reference in the phish book?  i am not finding it…i did however find that they considered ACDC and van halen albums along with quadrophenia :)

@Patrick Sweeney

I’m not sold on your reasoning, but they could totally nail a Blue Oyster Cult album.  Like Agents of Fortune.  Great album.

How much rad would E.T.I. be?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v19KTaEoa4c

Not to mention Fish could work out on the cowbell on Don’t Fear the Reaper.  (like in that fuckin’ funny “cowbell mash-up” they were playing on The Bunny at It.)  Good times.  I must have listened to that thing 50 times in the campground…and never got sick of it.  Anyone else remember that???

HA HA HA!!!  Phish has done it again.  All of you that are positive that Phish will play an album from the 99 albums shown on the gallery will be in for quite a surprise come Halloween.  For those of you that are skeptical of the 100th album theory, I have one question for you, have you ever seen this band?  I’ve only been to 1 Halloween Phish show (10/31/94), but I can tell you that Phish seemed to take almost as much pleasure in faking everyone out with the Dark Side of the Moon tease as they did playing the White Album.  These guys are the ultimate pranksters and take great delight in fooling us every chance they can.  Do you really think they’d draw so much attention to the album of their choice?  While that may be a good way to get everyone familiar with the album before the show, that just doesn’t seem like Phish to me.

This entire album-killing spectacle is merely a diversion from the true album and a brilliant way to get us excited and speculating about the other albums.  The invitation to the festival simply mentions playing the last album alive, it does not explicitly state that it will be one of the albums shown.  My very first thought when seeing the website was that none of those albums would be played, but then I too was lured into wishing for my favorites.  The Let It Bleed theory is quite clever and seems entirely plausible to me although some of it may be too mainstream compared to their past Halloween picks. However, it would be the year to go more mainstream with the expectations of a festival.

I would not be surprised at all if this was the year they pulled off Joe’s Garage, but in my opinion almost anything is possible including playing albums, alive or dead, from the gallery.  One thing I can say is that if this gallery did not exist, more people would be talking about albums off the list which means that if this is a ruse (and I believe it is) then Phish has succeeded in making their true pick even more of a surprise and fooling many of us along the way.  Can’t wait to see what the boys have in store for us!!!

Woo-hoo, come on London Calling!
I knew Miles Davis never stood a chance. I had Ghost in the Machine in my top 5 probabilities.

steely dan played in Indio on the 19th i think

i think this is all a sham.

i really wanted to see them do KISS

fricken page dressed up, mike as Gene.

fricken fire

smh.

Listened to ZIGGY for the first time in years.. it would be the perfect album…not a huge Bowie fan but a what a GREAT album! I think it fits like a glove…NO WAY with Thriller, K.Crimson, MGMT,YES,Genesis…Phish has never done an album that they couldnt do justice to vocally and musically…Also, I love The Clash and Im sure Phish does too but vocally there is too much gritty, english accent….as for the STONES…well, i just dont see it happening.

ZIGGY is it….i guarantee….well maybe JIMI or Frank but ZIGGY is #1

so why’d the maps just disappear?? they fake or what??

@ Matt from Chicago

Exactly right… I wish I could have said it so concisely myself!

Police on my back… another popular pick (which was never really a possibility) down.

So much for the donuts theory…

Nice to see so many folks starting to come around to the Genesis pick, although I think Ziggy is still the front runner.

@ matt from chicago

ur an ass

Between The Police death and camp mapa new top 3 most likely :

1.Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
2.Marquee Moon
3.London Calling

After revisiting all albums I think it is Chicago Transit Authority. I dont like Chicago and I still wish for Pretzel, Ziggy, Zappa but this is one damn good album, extremely Phishable with long jams insane solos, Beatles White album teaser, Free form Guitar, South California Purple, Poem 58 and liberation as finale. I cant believe its Chicago, revisit and you will agree.
