Introduction: The Phish Halloween Album Teaser (September 28th, 2009)

Today the Festival 8 site on Phish.com was updated with yet another teaser animation, only this time instead of teags sayg the location, they're teasing the Halloween cover album.

The new site features a haunted gallery of 99 albums, each a possibility for the musical costume, and each a possible victim of an unfortunate demise.

A handful of albums have already been killed off, and there should be a lot more killing over the next few weeks as the welcome card promises Phish will “play the last record left alive.”

Gotta admit I was pleased to see both of my top choices — Appetite for Destruction and Exile on Main Street — made the list. Figure Appetite is a long-shot but Exile could have a chance.

Place card for Phish Halloween album teaser

Though I doubt this will be quite as uproar-inducing as the Halloween map, it's sure to keep the Festival 8 buzz going strong. Plus it'll also give you a chance to study up on the remaining possibilities (rumor has it there will be 8 albums left when the fest begins) and get familiar with the material, whatever it may be.

WARNING: Spoilers & speculation below. Proceed at your own risk.

Update: The Grateful Living (September 29th @ 12:11 am)

I'm sure this means nothing, but one eagle-eyed fan has noticed that the Grateful Dead are listed as the “Grateful Living” in the xml config file that's driving the gallery. Hmmm… certainly wouldn't mind if American Beauty is “the last record left alive.”

Update: The Grateful Living Part 2 (September 29th @ 2:41 am)

There's a comment below about the Grateful Dead thing pointing out that the word “living” is used in the xml file to denote albums that are still in the mix. I realized that, but in this case it's not just the <stateofbeing> node that says living, but the <title> node as well.

That said, the reader's comment opened my mind up to a much more likely theory. Someone did a search and replace on that xml file, replacing all occurrences of “dead” with “living” — only they didn't select match case — and so the “Grateful Dead” became the “Grateful living.” Note also the lowercase “l” which I incorrectly noted as an uppercase “L” above.

So in effect, I'm still sure it means nothing… other than that speculating on Phish teaser animations is a great way to waste time.

Update: The Grateful Living Part 3 (September 29th @ 1:36 pm)

The Grateful Dead are now listed correctly in the .xml file. Case closed.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 10:36 pm)

Born to Run Languedoc

Strange things are afoot in the haunted gallery, as a number of album covers have started to get a Phish-themed makeover.

  • Phish are in the sardine can on Hello Nasty
  • The hot dog vendor on Pretzel Logic is sporting a viking hat
  • The Boss is playing a Languedoc
  • Trey and Page are moving a keyboard on Moving Pictures
  • T-Rex is now T-rey
  • Tom Petty is wearing a Phish shirt
  • Mike Gordon has joined the Ramones (added 10/7)
  • Rage Against the Machine is now Page Against the Machine (added 10/9)
  • Fishman is on the cover of Exile on Main Street (added 10/10)
  • Ghost in the Machine is now Story of the Ghost in the Machine (added 10/15)
  • AC/DC Back in Black is now AC/DC Bag (added 10/15)
  • Page is in the rearview mirror on the Minutemen album (added 10/16)
  • Fishman's head has been added to one of the Electric Ladyland ladies (added 10/16)

Just as it was starting to feel really repetitive, this is a great twist to keep things interesting.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 11:36 pm)

Original Blind Faith album cover

A commenter below just inquired if anyone noticed that a “new album” had been added to the gallery

Well it's a new album cover, but not a new album. That's the original cover image from Blind Faith's self-titled debut. Rumor has it the naked young girl is Ginger Baker's daughter, but whoever it is she didn't make the cut. The cover was banned in the USA where it was sold with the “bland, but shopper-friendly, band photo.”

Update: Album YouTube Links (October 7th @ 3:23 pm)

Well this is interesting. Some of the albums in the xml config file have been updated to include YouTube links.

I'll give you one guess how many albums got the special treatment…

  1. AC/DC, Hells Bells from Back in Black
  2. Aerosmith, Sweet Emotion from Toys In The Attic (by Gordon/Kottke)
  3. Arcade Fire, Wake Up from Funeral
  4. David Bowie, Oh You Pretty Things from Hunky Dory
  5. David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust from Five Years Live
  6. Led Zeppelin, Going to California from Zeppelin IV
  7. The Band, Up On Cripple Creek from The Band
  8. Clash, Clampdown from London Calling

I sure hope these aren't the finalist because they seem to have forgotten GNR :)

Update: Festival 8 Numerology (October 7th @ 7:17 pm)

Just came across some interesting numerology observations from PTer Sixtwenty294.

8 ball
  • Moving Pictures is Rush's 8th album
  • Escape is Journey's 8th album
  • Kiss Alive II is Kiss's 8th album
  • Tonight's the Night is Neil Young's 8th album
  • Goodbye yellow brick road is Elton John's 8th album (including a live album)
  • Hot Rats is Frank Zappa's 8th album (including comilations) Thx Jeff G.

Plus, they changed 8 album covers — Blind Faith, T.Rex, Springsteen, Beastie Boys, Ramones, Steely Dan, Rush, and Tom Petty. And as noted above, 8 albums have videos.

That's a whole lot of eights. Nice work Sixtwenty294.

Update: Albums with 8 Songs (October 8th @ 12:11 am)

Got some more 8's thanks to a comment from Bryan Lasky — the albums with 8 songs

  • Boston | Boston
  • Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
  • Black Sabbath | Paranoid
  • Metallica | Master Of Puppets
  • Led Zeppelin | IV (Zoso)
  • Pixies | Come On Pilgrim
  • Van Morrison | Astral Weeks
  • Television | Marquee Moon
  • Leonard Cohen | I'm Your Man (eliminated)
  •

Update: YouTube Links Part 2 & 8 Letter Names (October 8th @ 4:55 pm)

A few things to note here.

First, the mis-linked Arcade Fire and Clash videos from yesterday were updated in the xml. Plus, a bunch of additional video links were added some time today. These include…

  1. Frank Zappa, Cosmik Debris from Apostrophe
  2. Led Zeppelin, Misty Mountain Hop from Zeppelin IV
  3. Metallica, Master of Puppets from Master of Puppets
  4. Minutemen, Jesus And Tequila from Double Nickels On The Dime
  5. Nirvana, Lithium from Nevermind
  6. Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb from The Wall
  7. Radiohead, Everything In Its Right Place from Kid A
  8. Rush, YYZ from Moving Pictures
  9. Violent Femmes, Blister In The Sun from Violent Femmes
  10. Yes, I've Seen All Good People from The Yes Album

Next, if you've been enjoying the numbers game and were miffed that there were 10 new videos and not 8, there's a comment from Lorenzo below that I think you'll like — it's the artists on the list with 8 letter names

  • Bob Dylan
  • Bob Seger
  • Brian Eno
  • Firehose
  • Pavement

Update: Electric Ladyland Album Cover (October 8th @ 8:13 pm)

Official Electric Ladyland album cover
Original Electric Ladyland album cover
Linda Eastman Hendrix Experience Alice in Wonderland

Here's an update for the dudes in the front row, and this one actually is riveting.

The official Electric Landyland album cover (left) has been replaced with the original UK cover (center) featuring a harem of late sixties babes. Once again, banned in the USA and elsewhere.

Notably, Hendrix didn't want this cover or the blurry red and yellow mugshot. Instead he'd requested they use a Linda Eastman photo (right) of the Experience sitting with some kids on the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park. Given a vote, I'd have chosen the babes.

Update: Links to Album Streams (October 9th @ 12:52 pm)

For your listening pleasure, I've stated linking up some of the albums below to free, legal streams on Grooveshark. Unfortunately most of their playlists are incomplete or have tons of duplicates, so you basically need to create each one by hand which is time consuming.

That said, if anyone's feeling ambitious and wants to take on an album or two it'd be greatly appreciated. Just shoot me an email or post a comment with the playlist link.

Update: Fall Tour Dates Announced (October 9th @ 10:32 am)

Nothing to do with albums or 8's, but Fall Tour Dates have been announced.

Update: Video Links Part 3 (October 9th @ 1:30 pm)

Got another handful of additional video links that were added some time today. These include…

  1. Blind Faith, Can't Find My Way Home from Blind Faith
  2. Genesis, In the Cage from Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  3. Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced from Are You Experienced
  4. King Crimson, Talking Drum from Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. Van Morrison, Cyprus Avenue from Astral Weeks

Update: Albums with Horns (October 13th @ 12:31 am)

The rumor mill is rapidly churning with the notion that there will be horns at Festival 8, presumably for the musical costume. Here's a list of albums you might be hearing if that rumor pans out…

  • Curtis Mayfield | Superfly Soundtrack
  • Chicago | The Chicago Transit Authority
  • David Bowie | Ziggy Stardust
  • Frank Zappa | Apostrophe
  • Frank Zappa | Hot Rats
  • Michael Jackson | Thiller
  • Miles Davis | A Tribute To Jack Johnson
  • Pink Floyd | The Wall
  • Radiohead | Kid A
  • Steely Dan | Pretzel Logic
  • T.Rex | Electric Warrior

  • The Band | The Band (aka Brown Album)
  • The Clash | London Calling
  • The Police | Ghost in the Machine

Meanwhile, I'm generally averse to Hitler but the video above cracks me up every time so I'm just embedding to avoid having to go to YouTube — and for the 3 people who still haven't seen it.

Update: Mike's Hotline Hint & more (October 13th @ 11:15 pm)

A few things to report, aside from the fact that CCR, ZZ Top, and the Ramones were killed off today.

First, Mike's hotline is offering a very Gordonesque “hint” at the Halloween album — singing a line from the chorus of the Go-Gos Out Lips Are Sealed. Personally I prefer the Hilary / Haley Duff version. Hear Mike for yourself at 212-330-9092.

Added 10/14 @ 5:45 pm Lots of message board chatter that lips could be a thinly veiled Stones reference.

Added 10/19 @ 8:23 pm “Our lips are sealed” is a lyric in the song Elevation by Television. Coincidence?

Second, I've started a gallery of Festival 8 posters that's already got great art by folks like AJ Masthay, Jamie Huntsman, and Not Pollock.

Finally, I'm doing a Series II Page bobblehead giveaway. This one features Page as The Chairman of the Boards, my favorite of all the bobbles so far.

Update: Phish Festivalography on Sirius (October 14th @ 12:10 am)

Not sure if I'm late to the game on this but I just got wind of a cool sounding show on Sirius called “Phish Festivalography.” It's a four part series starting Thursday the 15th at 9:00 pm Eastern (with replay at 2 am).

Hosted by Jonathan Schwartz from “Gone Phishin',” the exclusive series will cover Phish's festival history in words and music. Sounds promising.

Update: Miner's Case for Ziggy Stardust (October 14th @ 3:00 pm)

Spiders from Mars Fleece

Mr. Miner over at Phish thoughts has made the case for Ziggy Stardust:

For the elaborate theatrics and space-aged costumes alone, Ziggy Stardust would make a superb spectacle for the Halloween set. But beyond the glamorous show this album could provide, the music and lyrics of Bowie’s record fit perfectly with Phish’s place in time.

Read Miner's full post for more.

In other news, Zeppelin IV was just eliminated! Kinda figured that one would stick around for a while but alas, it's gone.

Update: The Album Elimination Set (October 14th @ 5:15 pm)

Got what I think might be a fun concept that revolves around the premise / rumor that there will be 8 albums left at Festival time.

Imagine you have just woken up from a dream. In that dream you were at Festival 8 and the band threw a major curve-ball 2nd set Friday, eliminating albums by playing 6 covers plus a cover encore — one from each of the 7 albums NOT being played.

So for example, in my dream it might look something like this:

  1. Detroit Rock City (Kiss)
  2. Communication Breakdown (Zeppelin)
  3. Poem 58 (Chicago)
  4. Counting Out Time (Genesis)
  5. Every Little Thing She Does (Police)
  6. Rip this Joint (Stones)
  7. Encore: Paradise City (GNR)

Stream a compilation of this fake set

Notably, I mixed and matched what I'd want them to play with what I think they'd play, which I think makes a huge difference, and is probably how a real dream would unfold.

Also note that I believe it's highly unlikely that they'll eliminate the final albums this way*, but given this concept, what would they play in your dream? Post a comment below once you've given it some thought.

* My insane hypothesis here, in case you were wondering, is that they will have a real life version of the haunted gallery. This will be designed by the guy who did the installations at Hampton and Bonnaroo. Throughout the first two days of the fest actors will come in and kill these larger than life covers with real chainsaws, hatchets, spurting blood, etc. The final 3 or so will be killed on stage in a theatrical experience immediately preceding the costume set Saturday.

Update: The Dead are Dead (October 14th @ 8:50 pm)

Crying Dancing Bear

Oh man, you step away for a few hours and they go and kill off the good ol' Grateful Dead. I didn't think for a second they were going to play this, but I wouldn't have complained. For those who were hoping for this one, the only solace I have to offer is this: Terrapin from Virginia Beach '98. Enjoy.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Bands with 4 Members (October 15th @ 12:40 am)

Here's an interesting observation from Greg below: all the bands phish has covered have been 4 members (at one point or another). If that trend continues, here's who you might hear:

  • Black Sabbath
  • Blind Faith
  • Boston (technically)
  • Genesis (v1.0)
  • Kiss
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Metalica
  • Modern Lovers
  • Pink Floyd
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Television
  • The Clash
  • The Doors
  • The Pixies
  • U2
  • Van Halen
  • Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Greg goes on to jokingly note, “That's 16 bands left. 2 weeks left. 16 divided by 2 is 8!!!!!” Fascinating. Just added the Clash and there are now 17 bands in the list rendering Greg's joke humorless.

Update: Handicapping the Albums (October 16th @ 9:40 am)

I don't think anyone's actually keeping books, but Eric Wyman and Matt Dubno have been handicapping the remaining albums. Here are a few of their picks:

  • Sticky Fingers | Matt @ 20:1, Eric @ 3:2
  • Exile on Main Street | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 12:1
  • Moving Pictures | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 25:1
  • Hot Rats | Matt @ 12:1, Eric @ 75:1
  • Electric Ladyland | Matt @ 8:1, Eric @ 3:1

See more handicapping action at 99 Halloweens.

Update: The Campground Albums (October 16th @ 11:50 am)

So this latest rumor has been circulating a bit but the din finally got loud enough that I've decided to post it. People are now saying that there will be 8 campgrounds at Festival 8, one for each of the finalist albums. Here's the rumored list…

  1. David Bowie | Hunky Dory
  2. Genesis | The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway | SBD
  3. Jimi Hendrix | Electric Ladyland
  4. King Crimson | Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. MGMT | Oracular Spectacular
  6. Prince | Purple Rain
  7. Radiohead | Kid A
  8. Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street

I'd take it for what it is, a rumor, but that list pretty well thought out. As I'm sure is the case for most folks, there's a few of my favorites (Stones, Jimi, Genesis), a few I'm not so big on (Radiohead, MGMT), a few I could go either way on (Bowie, Prince), and one I've yet to hear (King Crimson).

Crowd favorite Ziggy Stardust is noticeably absent, leading some to speculate that they'll play a non-campground album. But I'm not so sure as that would mean they'd be playing an album that was previously eliminated, a concept that didn't go over so well with California on the teaser map.

Finally, I saw a great suggestion on another board — the band could go around the campsites late-night and serenade each with a performance of a few tunes from their respective albums. That's probably about the only thing that would make me question my hotel decision, but time will tell.

Update: Much on the Horizon at 8 (October 16th @ 4:40 pm)

Update: The Killer Album Theory (October 16th @ 6:20 pm)

Okay. Here's a theory (not mine) that's either totally obvious or totally out-there, or perhaps a little bit of both.

Let it Bleed Album Cover

The obvious part of the theory (or at least already been discussed here and there) is that the Halloween album is not actually on the list.

The out-there part is that the 100th album is actually the murderer — the one doing all the killing — and that album would be, pun intended, Let it Bleed… the Stones 8th album.

Look forward to your comments on this one.

Hat tip to Cassidy B. for the theory.

Update: Ryan Kerrigan's 8 Balls, David Welker Scratchboard (October 17th @ 5:49 pm)

Ryan Kerrigan Festival 8 Ball

Just added some great stuff to the Festival 8 poster gallery including a set of hand-painted 8 balls by Ryan Kerrigan and an incredible scratchboard piece by David Welker (who also did the Rift cover).

If this is any indication of the type of stuff people will be slinging at the Festival, I might just need an extra suitcase.

Nice work gents.

Update: Pictures at an Exhibition (October 18th @ 11:16 am)

A few followup thoughts to the 100th album theory have emerged in the comment thread below, including one comment from ben who suggests Alice Cooper's 1971 album Killer as the 100th album, noting also that Alice is playing in town on the 30th.

ELP Pictures at an Exhibition

Second, and perhaps more intriguing, is this comment from stealingtime about ELP's 1971 album Pictures at an Exhibition

I doubt they'd play this, as the album has hardly any guitar (listen here) but man does that album cover bear striking resemblance to the Phish gallery or what?

Update: Vendor Map of Festival Grounds (October 19th @ 5:30 pm)

Update removed. Sorry.

Update: Upper Playground / Sonic Living “Day 1” (October 19th @ 10:15 pm)

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8
Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Came across this link on PhishPosters.com tonight. I'm not familiar with either Upper Playground or Sonic Living, both of whom have logos on these, but someone on PhishPosters is guessing that these are Festival 8 laminate designs.

These aren't quite as cool as past laminates if that's the case, though there's plenty of cool stuff in the UP news feed like this brilliant photo gallery of an urban narcolepsy epidemic.

Update: 10:38 pm Interesting. There's a poster gallery on the Sonic Living site that includes these images, sans text. The guitar gun is by Jeremy Fish, the cityscape by Marco Zamora, and the bike by Sam Flores.

Despite the update, I'm still not sure what the examples above are supposed to be . Post a comment if you have any ideas.

Update: Seeking photos from Phish fans (October 21st  @ 1:18 pm)

Local Indio paper The Desert Sun is looking for great photos from past Phish festivals. See here for details and an email address to send pics.

Update: Festival 8 to be Filmed in 3D (October 21st  @ 2:04 pm)

3D glasses

I heard this rumor from a pretty reliable source last week, but this recent PT post seems to confirm it: Festival 8 will be filmed in 3D! Pretty sure that doesn't mean a simulcast, but it could mean a sweet ass IMAX film down the road along the lines of U2 3D or my other favorite band, the Jonas Brothers.

Update: Burble & Borealis (October 22nd @ 5:22 pm)

Here are two of the amazing interactive sculptures that might be melting your face at Festival 8…

Burble

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A spectacular, futuristic sculpture of helium-filled balloons packed with LEDs and infrared sensors that floats above spectators in response to infra-red signals and its immediate environment.

Borealis

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A mirage-like installation that glows with colours and ebullient patterns created in response to the competing and collaborative voices, music and screams of people nearby.

Update: Behold the Plasma Cutter (October 23rd @ 5:00 pm)

Here's some more neat stuff the likes of which you just might see at Festival 8. It's two amazing metal sculptures from the portfolio of San Francisco based Dan Das Mann. As you can see, he's not only a genius with the plasma cutter, but also knows a thing or two about melting faces.

Update: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings @ F8? (October 24th @ 10:30 pm)

Here's a rumor that, if true, has been of the better kept secrets of this whole affair.

As posted in this comment, word is Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will join Phish for the musical costume at Festival 8.

The video at right should give you a good idea of Ms. Jones's superb vocals and the Dap-Kings funk / soul musical stylings.

No complaints from this guy if this is legit, which I believe it be. Especially if it means an Exile on Main Street (or Let it Bleed) costume.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Colossal Testaments in Steel and Stone (October 25th @ 3:00 pm)

Here's a trio of large-scale sculptures from Rosanna Scimeca, another artist you might be seeing at 8. According to her site, Rosanna likes to “explore how the observer may interface, interact, and identify with her installations.” Yeah, I can give her a preview: they're going bug out.

Update: Pollock Halloween Mask + HeadCount Trivia Contest (October 26th @ 1:45 pm)

Today Jambands.com posted information about a Pollock Halloween mask to be available at the WaterWheel table gallery throughout Festival 8. Plus, HeadCount will be running a trivia contest and the grand prize winner will get an uncut sheet of masks with a  one-of-kind Pollock doodle.

Sample trivia question: “What town does Trey Anastasio, John Popper of Blues Traveler and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors all hale from?”

Pollock Festival 8 Teaser

There's also the recently surfaced image at right, which I believe to be a teaser for a Pollock Festival 8 poster, though I'm not 100% on that.

Poster or not, can't wait to see the mask! In the mean time, here's a growing Festival 8 poster gallery.

Update: Stage Photo & Viewing Platform Sketch (October 26th @ 6:45 pm)

Today Twitter user @BathtubGym posted what I believe to be the first pic of the stage setup, as well as a sketch of the viewing platform for the Dan Das Mann installation.

I'm sure I'll say this ten times over the next 2 days, but I can't believe I just got MORE excited.

Update: Festival 8 to be Simulcast Live on Sirus (October 26th @ 9:54 pm)

This just in: all 8 sets of Festival 8 including the musical costume and acoustic set will be simulcast live on JamOn, channel 17 on SIRIUS!!!

Not a subscriber? Good news… you can sign up for a free trial and hear the simulcast without spending a dime. Huge thanks to whoever is responsible for arranging this. Jam On!

Update: They Have Created Fire (October 27th @ 1:56 am)

If you're anything like me, you're somehow riveted by fire — and you'll definitely be making it a point to see this six-pack fire artists rumored to be appearing at Festival 8:

Update: Glitches, XML fun, & Gordon's Hotline (October 28th @ 1:18 pm)

The Wall

Looks like there was some sort of glitch in the album teaser on Phish.com for a bit when Apostrophe was killed — as the gallery was only showing living albums, and the Wall and Exile had gone missing. All seems back to normal now, though the Wall is indeed dead as seen at right.

Also appears that someone's having some fun with the xml file — with Michael Jackson changing to “Michael Jackson Is Alive“ and Yes changing to “Yes Yes Yes Yes.“ — but I'm not reading into either of those too much.

Speaking of having fun, Gordon's hotline (212-330-9092) has had two recent updates, the latest playing off the 100th album theories that are floating around.

And last but not least, I just checked into my flight for tomorrow. If anyone's on Southwest from Chicago at 12:35, hit me up for a free drink coupon. I'll be the dork carrying the poster tube.

Update: Jamtopia Meetup | Friday. Setbreak. Picnic Area. (October 28th @ 4:18 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

Okay, let's make this thing official.

After extensive reviews of the map and comments, I believe the best time and place to meet is setbreak on Friday at the picnic area. It's at the back of the concert field Page side.

That way if people want to hit the Honey Bucket or grab food or drinks or whatever it's all convenient.

Update: Get a FREE scoop of Ben & Jerry's (October 28th @ 5:24 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

I just got an email from Ben & Jerry's with some great news.

In addition to being huge fans of Jamtopia, Vermont's finest ice cream purveyors will be offering free scoops of Phish Food at Festival 8.

All you have to do is “particip8” in a social action with one of the charities at the WaterWheel booth (e.g. sign a petition, make a donation) to get your free delights.

Sweet.

Update: More Stage Photos (October 28th @ 6:25 pm)

Got some more stage pics, this time from Twitter user @briankarol:

I'm thinking they need more speakers!

Update: Festival 8 Wristband (October 29th @ 12:11 am)

Festival 8 wristband

I'm not sure if this is a staff wristband or just the standard issue, but either way it looks pretty sweet sauce. If the production values of this wristband are any indication this is really going to be one hell of a shindig.

Meanwhile, as I write this, Van Morrison and Zeppelin were killed off. Only 9 remain. Can't get there soon enough.

Update: Festival 8 Shout-out on Conan (October 29th @ 8:08 am)

Well this is surreal. Masterfully bearded Phish fan Rob Howard was in the Late Night crowd yesterday and got interviewed by Conan to “promote Phish.”

As you'll see when you watch the video, Conan had a little something extra planned to help get the word out about Festival 8.

Props to Rob for representing Phish — and the great state of Illinois :)

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Finally on My Way (October 29th @ 10:00 am)

Well I'm just about to take off for the airport. This has been an amazing 30+ days tracking the album teaser and I'm almost sad to see it end. Thank you all for your awesome participation: coming up with crazy numerology, alerting me to updates, and just waxing philosophical in the comments.

As soon as I land I'll start up a new post with updates and recaps from the Festival. Hope to keep the great comments going there, so I'll be having a giveaway — a little something that's sure to light up any room. I think you'll like it.

Update 7pm: New Festival 8 Recap post is live.

2033 Comments so far

Ok, so after a little research into the band Minutemen and their album Double Nickels on the Dime.

Facts:

1. The band consists of 4 people.

2. The album has 44 tracks, which if you add 4+4=8.

3. The band is from SoCal, in which Indio resides as well. ...A perfect album to cover for all their Cali fans.

4. Each track is less than 3 minutes, leaving plenty of room for the crew to jam for 10-15 mins.

5. Also, did you know that Interstate 10 stretches from the West Coast to the East Coast and through “8” different states.

6.
And here is the give away, Double Nickels is a trucker slang for 55
miles per hour and “on the Dime” is another slang for Interstate 10
which goes right through Indio and the Interstate in which will
probably all be stuck on for hours waiting to get into the festival.

What do you guys think?

Look like phish are cop killers. Story of the Ghost in the Machine = dead.

Holy crap Ghost in the Machine out. Gamechanger

there goes the Police…

Ghost in the Machine is just that.

Police axed.  Boston is definetly in the running.  Not one of my choices but Trey did use them in the same sentence as Grateful Dead in Bitterweet Motel, saying he “loved” aspects of both bands.  Doubtful but Wall would be cool to see live.  Whatever it is this will be one great festival!

If they really learned Lamb Lies Down in 95 and then decided not to play it, then to me it seems most likely that they never will. There was a reason they decided not to play it - probably because they didn’t want to look at a huge crowd not dancing to Genesis because most people don’t know it and won’t dig it.

I’m pretty positive, having listened tot he album recently, that it will not be Lamb. It’s gonna be something fun.

I agree, though, that the Wall is a non-starter.

@ matt from chicago. could you be more condescending? you are the reason people hate this band. everyone is entitled to their opinion! no need to be a know-it-all. hop off the high horse and try and let the rest of us enjoy ourselves!

so i just watched police - ghost in the machine get shot, and it made me think.  this is halloween.  halloween involves zombies.  so who is to say these albums are dead?  everyone knows you have to separate the head from the body…

@Matt from Chicago

You’re a bummer, dude.  You should get over yourself…or start a new blog and post a sign that says “For Cool 1.0 Fans Only”.

You can’t tell me this wouldn’t be the best start to the costume ever!!!

So you thought you might like to,
Go to the show.
To feel the warm thrill of confusion,
That space cadet glow.
Tell me is something eluding you, sunshine?
Is this not what you expected to see?
If you wanna find out whats behind these cold eyes,
Youll just have to blow your way through this disguise.

Long live The Wall!!!

GHOST IN THE MACHINE IS GONE

Aurora Borealis!!

Ziggy Stardust!!

@G Funk Era
“Who the #$&%* keeps voting for Boston? they are not going to play that crap in Southern California!”
Sorry, that was me, I know they probably wont play it and would suck for most people ther but u gotta understand as a teen I raided my Dads records when I first discovered weed and that album just stuck.

I still think its Television or Steely.
Dark Horse - Paranoid

But if this map is real then lm wrong.

yea, seeing 100,000 phish fans do the thriller dance would be embarassing and i would leave the concert field with a bag over my head hoping nobody saw me.

Cool seeing so many people get exposed to the Minutemen, and Television.

I haven’t seen anyone mention this yet, but in the song “History Lesson Part 2”  the Minutemen reference several other artists on the list: Bob Dylan, Richard Hell of Television, Joe Strummer of the Clash, and John Doe of X.

What I don’t see on the list is Blue Oyster Cult, but they also mention Eric Bloom of Blue Oyster Cult.  I think the reaper’s been killing these albums, and we’re all going to be listening to some BOC on Halloween.  Don’t fear the reaper baby!

The Police have left the premises!  I know a lot of you are going to be bummed about that one.  My condolonces.

they are not playing michael jackson. that would be a terrible choice for them. it would just sound goofy and the novelty would wear off after like two songs. plus…“the girl is mine” and “human nature”? ugh.

so forget it people. it aint happening.

its shaping up to be the 8 albums that were already leaked as the finalists. not one of those 8 has been eliminated since the list circulated so i think it’s time we all focus on those albums.

I just prepared and ate a delicious grilled cheese sandwich while listening to apostrophe. It would be a perfect choice for the cover album. its got lots of horns and female vocals so that could be why that vocalist is rehearsing with them. it also fits phish’s weird absurdest sense of humor perfectly. musical its supper fun and complicated but has wide appeal. st. alfonzos pancake breakfast would be mind blowing and stink foot would be so tasty. (i don’t think those words have ever been put together like that before) plus it would not be hard vocally because zappa mainly just tells strange stories for most of the record. the whole thing comes off like a harpua set. plus no one is expecting it. its recognizable enough for the crowd to be comfortable with a few songs but also experiential enough to please the prog rock, long time fans… i have no clue what they will do but this would be my pick

@Phishin4Truth
“Who is ready to get sent into orbit!”
Im raising my hand right now, me is!!!!

Also, although Chicago is horn heavy it is very very guitar heavy, anyway I love horns, a wall off brass can be pretty psychedelic.

as for Purple Rain I really cant think of a better set opener than ‘Lets Go Crazy’

and whilst I ve never for a second thought theyd play Thriller its almost so ridiculously cheesy that they just might do it, the ultimate mind fuck, and u now they’d rock it so hard that no one would remember String Cheezy or any other bands have covered it.

no holds barred , its PhiSh!

Who the #$&%* keeps voting for Boston? they are not going to play that crap in Southern California!

london calling might hint europe tour

Ok guys and gals:

Seriously??

When i first stared seeing phish in the early 90’s,
they were nothing but amazing. Every show I went to blew my mind. I remember being at Rosemont Horizon on 10-31-95 for my 16th birthday with my dad and they stared to tease Thriller and everyone started laughing hysterically which was followed by an amazing Quadrophenia.

I find myself having a huge problem with 2.0 and even more 3.0 fans. If you guys honestly think that Phish is going to play Thriller, then I guess the joke is on you.
One of the things I love about Phish after all these years
are the nerdy social jokes that they play on fans. I guess they never get old and they will always be funny because there are always some idiots that will believe it.
I love how people think that that album is even really seriously considered and I’m sure Phish will enjoy watching the naive hold on to that idea right down to the end.

In one of the earlier comments, someone wrote:
“wouldnt it be awesome to see 100,000 people dancing to thriller”

And the response is a simple, “no.”
On contrary, it would actually be really dumb considering the majority wouldn’t even know how to do it and it’s not cool to see 10 people dance to Thriller. And, really, who honestly wants to hear Phish play MJ anyway?
god~!

Here’s the rundown for you dreaded, $120 patchwork wearing plastic hippies. They already played:
the beatles
velvet underground
talking heads
the who
and pink floyd (don’t forget 11-2-98)

The point is, over the years, Phish have yet to repeat a band. Which means they probably won’t be playing The Wall. However, it would be cool to see 100,000 people
dance to depressing, despairing music. har har

There was someone who posted that they will play a 90’s
album because they thought that they where following the decades that the previous albums followed. Well,
they forgot to include VU’s Loaded and DSOM which are both from the 70’s, so that theory is not very convincing.

Here’s a hint about the album they will play that no one has mentioned:
In the phish book, either Trey or Page said that the same year they played Quadropehina, they had seriously considered playing The Lamb Lies Down on
Broadway, going as far as totally learning the album before making a quick decision to play The Who.

So my guess is Genesis this Halloween, and THAT would be amazing.

YES! Victory on post 888, I’m incredibly happy - I would like to thank the academy, my parents, and Todd for the blog of course.

IF the campground map is true, what do people think? would they play one of those 7, or something else? seems a little odd that they’d only have 7, like none of those will be played, but then that ruins all the fun of the surprise…

@Dizzy from Boulder re: comment #888

Hit http://jamtopia.com/contact/ and shoot me your mailing address… I’ll send you a fun prize.

If there is really a 100th album shooting arrows and knives and such, it’s probably Ted Nugent.

Just kidding, but I’d love to hear Phish play Stranglehold.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4hWcJGBneg

(strong fan video, btw.  professional animator?)

Dizzy from Boulder wins it!!!!  I was only 2 posts late…..890.  Cheers!

might be a little too obvious for phish, but i think they’re going for michael

if they play “the wall” i will personally crap 3 golden bricks, before my testicles explode into outer space.

@RevJustito…I’d share a beer with anyone who’s into Maiden.

Chicago - Transit Authority.

Never been a Chicago fan. but listened to the album and it is right up the boys alley.

I originally thought Thriller would be so awesome.. and I would have loved The White Stripes.

However.. ACDC would be great, and is great.. just saw them live and they rocked the house for a bunch of old men!  But it doesn’t have much diversity..

But after some thought and a little bridie chirp from a very reliable source..

Think Horns… full on horns section baby.

I would enjoy about 85% of what they have left to choose from.  I wish they wouldn’t play Chicago..

But.. I know whatever they play.. we are in for 8 sets of the Machine.

Who is ready to get sent into orbit!

Regarding the recently “leaked” festival grounds map pdf, here’s a video of the “Burble” - an interactive LED/balloon art installation.  Seems pretty awesome.

http://www.youtube.com/user/haquedesignresearch#p/a/BF2BC1A59AD8E637/2/IGJu47YLmfE

Seems plausible to me.  Also, the “Dan Das Man” is a Burning-Man veteran large-scale metal sculpture.  The “Oil Rig Light Towers” could also be the same ones that have been seen at Burning Man.

Google it for more info if you want.

Page Against the Machine is axed

Rage is gone.

P.S. on the Prince tip…I saw Of Montreal do a cover of Computer Blue this summer that…well, wow.  I can only imagine the justice this band would do it.  For anyone that thinks the album’s too poppy, give it another listen: it’s a dirty, dirty rocker.

@Todd—-thanks for reordering the comments.  Righteous!

I’m still hanging on for Ziggy or Purple Rain.  Prince/Purple Rain tour in ‘84 was my FIRST CONCERT EVER and seeing my favorite band do it up would completely blow my mind….

(I thought @headiest was just being sarcastic actually)

RATM is dead….antother BIG surprise.

****^that’s sarcasm, just in case…..

Rage is dead!

only 8 more days!!!!

I am not buying the map.  But I would buy @Todd or @Scott G a FOAM beer at Fest 8.  Hit me up if interested guys!

There really aren’t any “be-bop” changes on “Jack Johnson”.  It’s a groove based album.  The problem with covering it would have been that there aren’t really any songs on it.  It’s just a bunch of jamming that was pieced together by the producer.

@KuNg - I have no photoshop skills.  the pdf is legit AFAIK.

888???

KILL BRUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i was just thinking, what the hell am i gunna do after 8? i’m spending so much time diving into all the excitement, that once it’s over, i will hardly have anything to look forward to (unless i decide to go 100% broke and hit up some fall tour dates).

hoping to be post 888…there’s no way to tell since you have to wait for the approval time, but one can dream, haha.

Ziggy Stardust
(Fish played on the David Bowie tribute on the Jam Cruse a few years back)

Possible Spoiler Alert: After looking at the purported Festival 8 site plan, it looks like 7 of the final 8 albums are known: http://bit.ly/h6S1O

@bear

yeah i dont know if im actually going to be able to make it, i have this sweet scam going up here now where i convince the elderly that they ordered a bible from me and sell it at an insane rate…just got to watch out for the steins and bergs.  pretty badass though right? anyway if i do wind up going ive laid my itinerary out there..so if you see me (the steal ur face tat is on my neck with a pot leaf on the other side) holla at me custie

Thats a shame they didnt choose to do miles davis.. However, I knew it was coming because phish would never go back to there old school jazz style. Its a shame because of treys decline in guitar ability and tone there is no way he could keep up with fast be-bop phrases and harmony changes. At one point he could and he did it well, listen to donna lee from colonial theater 91 and you’ll know what i mean. Don’t get me wrong what ever album phish chooses will be great because there amazing performers but this is just the nail in the coffin for any hope trey and phish will ever go back to a jazzier sound

The Yes Album would be truly awesome, IMO, however they handle the lyrics.  This is in my personal top 3, along with Electric Ladyland and Apostrophe.

One thing all previous Halloween albums have in common - I personally am very familiar with all of them.  So, if “Dean knows the album really well” is a criteria, it could be one of these 3, or the Stones, or Genesis, or King Crimson, or Led Zeppelin, or, to a lesser degree, Ziggy Stardust, Police, or Springsteen.

Lots of good choices left, however.

Without getting into a logwinded breakdown of similarities, I personally think that horns will be involved. With that being said, I feel that they can open alot of listeners ears with some Chicago. Therefore, as crazy as it may sound Chicago Transit Authority is my definite pick. I know that we all want to hear Thriller, Ziggy, or Kid A; but I just don’t think that is being realistic. They are going to play what they want to play and damnit we are going to love IT!!!!!

@jambandy re: 12/11/92

Wasn’t there. Guess you didn’t invite me :)

My wife and I are sick people. We have Phish fever.  Arriving in California in 6 days. Over 15 years, we have seen some of the best and worst Phish moments. I want Stones, Clash, Bowie but don’t care WHAT it is thats covered. We are coming to rage, even if that means Mgmt. Thank you Todd for this blog, it has helped pass the time. Thank you Phish for expanding my musical horizons. Make every song…your favorite tune.

k.. this is how i see it going down… I find a Noob on the street who’s convinced they’re gonna play MGMT., bust him up a ‘la Detroit Rock City, take his ticket to 8, make it to Indio in time to get settled and BLITZED, make my way down front the first night, RAGE, sleep till showtime the next night, first set, chill, 2nd set <album by artist>, get completely hammered!, then Rcok out to the Third set harder than ever before making it forever memorable,.. ask someone to help me find a donut Sunday.. vomit while they’re playing the best acoustic set ever,..
listen to Prince Caspian close out the whole sh-bang and still feel like, I can’t wait for late fall tour and the bust-out from <album by artist>!

I love this band!!

@Brendan

Yup-well aware of the VU outliers, but I’m willing to consider them outliers (again there’s no reason to think I have any idea what they’re actually going to do—just my own coping mechanism for the random data set).

And of course Purple Rain is ruled out by my rules.

@Gregg
I never flamed you, man!

does anybody know why there are only seven album names listed on that map of the campground? MGMT is missing.

Purple Rain.

I can Imagine the Harpua narrative about some sort of wedding, and when the preacher speaks “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today…”  The the boys proceed to rip.

BTW, no song ever fucks with Computer Blue!

@Marisa
“I am hoping they are less than the $7 a pack like they are in Jersey.”

Sorry there expensive hear too, actually I think California has the highest tobacco tax in the country, but theres gas stations still selling for under $6.

I would just assume evrything (smokes, food, water, beer(if you wanto numb your conciseness) will 10-20% more expensive than on the outside.
Bring lots of cash to stimulate our education hating economy i CA(im talkin to you Arnold)

My prediction in Genesis bc I have read Trey saying something about listening to that album as a kid and how it s brought back the memories and giant head phones….. but personally i would love to hear pink flyod the wall or nirvana or led .... HELL NO to MGMT

Has anyone seen the new map? It reveals the last albums! but there are only 7! MGMT is missing.  It must be the one campsite on the bottom. Scroll up!

I might and I mean MIGHT be changing my vote to Pretzel Logic. Not quite done listening to it yet.  One thing that stands out is Walter Becker’s playing, Trey had to be influenced by him. I hope it remains as one of the finalists and I definitely won’t be disapointed if they play it.

@Phishphan94 from Sarasota, FL
I can see the “Lips are Sealed” comment may be suggesting a guest vocalist, its a stretch . But the Trey “Yes, I know what it is” thing is a little far fetched,” just dont think any “clue” would include the name of the band, although I would love it to be YES.

The Double Nickles covers are interesting but a 42 song album, i dont think so, the covers they do wouldnt help cause there obscure songs.

Im still feelin for Alt/rock or Pop:
Television
Steely Dan
Police or Prince

And for Rockn’Roll:
Electric Ladyland,
Paranoid or
Yes
and dont rule out T.Rex, very accesible and fun album.

and a creepy feelin it could still be Goodbye Yellow Brick Road(just leave out candle)

@TL

Man, I could have sworn your were at 12/11/92 in AA.  (A crew of guys in overalls?)

Looking forward to my 90th on 10/31/09.

AG

@Todd

75 shows is a solid effort.  I’m somewhere in the mid-50s.  Stopped keeping track.  Though I can say (from looking at your show list and recalling what I can of my own), 10/31/09 will be the 15th show where you and I have both been in attendance.

Here’s a link to a playlist for Pretzel Logic - looked like it was among the non-linked:

http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/playlist/Steely_Dan_Pretzel_Logic/17946115

@thedood re: when they list a set…

A “standard” show is two sets plus an encore.

Set 1
<set break>
Set 2
<encore break>
Encore

The setbreak is always exactly 15 minutes so set your watch :)

TL

P.S. 10/31 will by my 75th show, which depending on who you ask makes me a serious vet or a serious n00b.

Boom - So long - no need to fear Midi trumpets peeps!

@SCB -

As per phish.net, none of the songs from White Album (though they note that Ob La Di Ob La Da was jammed on several times), Quadrophenia, or Remain in Light were played by Phish before their respective Halloween performances.  However, Phish did do Sweet Jane on 8/8/98 & Lonesome Cowboy Bill 4 times in 95 (5/14, 5/16, 6/7 & 6/10) before performing Loaded.  I don’t know if you include the 11/2/98 Dark Side performance in your equation with that theory, but Speak to Me was played over the PA before White Album on 10/31/94, and Great Gig in the Sky was played a bunch of times in 93 and twice in 94.

Either way, though, with the 2 songs from Loaded being played before that album cover, I don’t think a song being played beforehand necessarily dismisses an album…though I’d tend to agree with you that the album will be all Phish debuts.

@headiest
you crack me up

any serious thoughts on the fest or are you here to try and make the rest of us look better?:)

See ya Miles.  There was zero chance of this being the costume, but I am glad they put it in the gallery just to expose it so more will hear it.  If you haven’t heard this album please do yourself a favor and check it out.  Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, and Herbie Hancock jam, and I mean jam on the two tracks (each over 25 minutes).  This is right up any Phan’s alley.

With recent big albums getting killed off and putting several clues together with a rumor here and there am i crazy to think that they may play The Yes Album with Jennifer Hartwick as the vocalist?

- Trey states “Yes, I think i know what it is”
-Mike’s hotline tip “our lips our sealed”
-Jennifer Hartwick is practicing with the band.

Long jamming songs where all members contribute equally!

@SCB
“Gregg - Have you ever heard the album “A Tribute to Jack Johnson”?”

Yes - it’s a Jazz record featuring one of the all time great trumpet players. Why would a Rock and Roll jamband without a trumpet player cover that?

It’s gone now - never had a chance.

And I really thought the midi horns idea was a good one ;)

Miles Davis costume…I just can’t believe how much traction that got here - take these guesses with a grain of salt - some people are obviously going a bit crazy ;)

Cheers!

@bigred94 - not only do the Minutemen cover Steely Dan, but they also cover CCR and Van Halen, both of which are on the wall.

Not sure if it’s relevant, but thought I’d throw it out there.

Fingers still crossed for CTA :) (although in my heart I don’t think it’s going to happen).

i’ve been listening to several of the albums that remain in the “100” and it’s been a real treat to listen to all of these influences that Phish brings to the stage every night. Whatever it is that they choose i’m sure it will be amazing. Even management and some band members werent totally sold on “Remain in Light” and that was a smash.
But… if i were to make a wish…
Looking back at all of the Phish shows, and thousands of other shows… okay, maybe hundreds… Seeing and hearing Prince perform Purple Rain is by far the most beautiful thing i’ve ever seen on a stage. Not sure if Trey could ever match that but i’d love to hear him make a wailing effort.
see Ya’ll at 8 in Indio

Miles Davis is gone.

Hello all!  We are sooo close! My husband and I can’t wait to get on that plane from Philly to Palm Springs on Thursday. It’s gonna be sic! We are taking Valley Music’s airport shuttle to 8. Does anyone know if there is a food store near the festival that is walking distance? Or does anyone know if the General Store will be selling cases of beer? If so, do you think the prices will be reasonable? Just trying to figure a few things out. How much do smokes run in Cali? I am hoping they are less than the $7 a pack like they are in Jersey. Thanks. See you all there. Wouldn’t it be fun for us all that have been talking over the past couple months to meet up?

Miles is dead.

Miles is dead. Definitely going to be Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. I hope.

Tribute to Jack Johnson just got axed.

Miles Davis——DEAD

Hot Rats gone but Apostrophe lives on.  Hallows nights will be a night of St Alfonzo, Father O’blivion, Uncle Remus, and of course a touch of yellow snow.

so stoked, this will actually just be my second time seeing phish, im a young buck and to be in the desert to see 7 sets plus them covering an amazing album, cant wait to hear the stories of all you phish veterans, btw its gotta be ziggy the album fits so well.

Quick phish related question:

When they list a set, is that a regular set, you know with the break in between and the encore at a reg show or does that count as two sets..thanks for clarifying?

8 days till I depart for Indio from Santa Monica (with 2-3 Washington Wooks).

So about two years ago I picked up the Television record for about 3 bucks, based off how many hipsters blow smoke up that bands anus.  I checked it out, but it did nothing for me, so it ended up in the stack of about 1500 other CD’s.

Busted it out last night.  Still not great, but as I listened, I could totally hear Phish doing that record (plus their vocals would be better).  But it makes me wonder, would the band do three NYC bands of the CBGB era in a row?

double nickles on the dime could be great…songs on the album are short, but seem to fit right into their style and would be easy to stretch, same for marque moon. I was unfirmiliar with both albums before this started, could someone tell me we\hen double nickles was realesed? just thinking that they have covered the 60’s 70’s and 80’s in the past. going with that idea aside from nevermind what from the 90’s is left? i dont think its going to be nevermind but…

1. london calling
2. electric ladyland
3. zep 1
4. exile
5. sticky fingers
5a. superfly soundtrack

london calling could be super sick…that album can go from rock to ska/reggae to funk from song to song…Death or Glory c’mon that would be nasty!!!  i love the countdown clock. 9 days…longest 9 days since i was a kid and christmas was 9 days away.

Ok-my one heuristic for helping make sense of the probabilities of any one album being picked—namely that Phish is too original to play any album that contains a song they or TAB have already played—is ringing true.

Therefore, I’m officially ruling out: Hunky Dory, Exile, Sticky Fingers, Van Halen, Boston, Back in Black, Zep 1, Modern Lovers, Born to Run.  Bet I’m even missing a few more.

Barrytown, here we come!

“Two of the basic options seem most reasonable to me: 1) they announce the album they will play or they 2) play a completely random album that nobody expected that isn’t on the list.”

Ok, but how(when/where) do you see them announcing the album?

Are we gonna get Playbills again this year?

I’d prefer not. I’d like to see them keep the album killing going on through 10/30 & 10/31 (maybe on the big screens?) with us not knowing the album until they start playing it.

Anyone else have thoughts on how things get wrapped up?

Gregg - Have you ever heard the album “A Tribute to Jack Johnson”?

maybe the image of fishman floating through space on the fest’s website is meant to be a hint.

that would seem to me to be the very definition of a Space Oddity.

CLASH PLEASE! i am starting to believe the100th album hypothesis. that might be because ‘let it bleed’ would blow all the other halloween shows out of the water. i do want to thnk TODD for this page and phish for helping me expand my musical intrests. that dude the headiest is a smacked ass

Hot Rats -> dead.  Once again, a huge shame.

Now that Are You Experienced? has been eliminated from contention, I’m siding with London Calling.  A rollicking good time, plenty of room for horns, plenty of room for improv (a Type II “Brand New Cadillac”?).  Plus it’s just so badass to think about being able to scream a new version of “Rudie Can’t Fail” in my car.  SkaPhish?  Who knew?

Regardless of what they do, it’s going to be Phishified.  Does Page sound like Lou Reed?  Hell no.  Did “Sweet Jane” sound awesome anyway?  Hell yes.

Whoever pointed this out, I like the idea of the Police liking coffee and donuts, but I also balk at the idea of them doing an album from any of other side project musicians (you don’t think they’d do a Kottke album, right?  So why would they do Copeland?).  Plus, as a whole GITM is kind of a weak album when compared to Synchronicity & Zenyatta Mondatta.  And I don’t see them doing “Hungry For You (J’aurais Toujours Faim De Toi)” because it’s mainly in French.  Not that they couldn’t pull it off, I just don’t think they’d risk it.  It would probably polarize the audience.

Sticky Fingers is too obvious, probably.

The creativity on this board is remarkable; the 100th album theory, the significance of 8, etc…everybody is unified, even with the disagreements.  It’s beautiful.

Also, mad props to the guy who pointed out how Television may emerge as the new Talking Heads.  It’s not an obvious choice, but what an excellent album for them to stretch out in.  I can really see this happening (maybe)...if anyone hasn’t entertained this idea yet, give it a shot…thanks for the heads up.  Pretty righteous album, really; it’s halfway between the Stones & The Cars, from what I can tell.  The “Our lips are sealed” thing is also too obvious, but that may not totally discount it.

Think there’s any validity to the theory that the 4 finalists will be Boston, Chicago, London & Broadway?  Locales are key.  Electric Ladyland?  Still too cliche.

Top 5:
1) London Calling
2) Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
3) Marquee Moon
4) Superfly
5) Van Halen I (Ice Cream Man? Rad.)

One thing’s for sure, my musical horizons have broadened since this whole thing began.  I’d never listened to a lot of these bands before…I even gave MGMT a shot (thought it was garbage, but I still tried it).  Brilliant!

@Hoover

True they are drum machines, but NIN and KMFDM use machines on the albums and live drummers on tour.  It works really well.  Electric Feel is a way better techno song than Kids, and the tracks after Kids are the best, imo, on OS.  My wife pops it into the car about every other week.

It’s nice people seem to be letting their egos go a little bit and have stopped expressing so many opinions as facts on here!

Doesn’t matter to me what they play, Iz going to be one happy camper!

I think this thread is going to get me fired!

I got tickets to almost every show for the fall tour.  Looking to trade for MSG.  If interested let me know, thanks

Good morning.  Zappa ‘Hot Rats’ has been axed.  Also, looks like we will have almost a full moon Halloween weekend.

For everyone who has not been to Indio Polo Fields, get excited.  They are beautiful and clean.  And when the sun sets in the desert in our beautiful mountains, the colors are stunning.  This is a wonderful place for this festival.

To Andy from Beavercreek, OH, I don’t know how much food will run on site, but California style farmers market are great.  I don’t think prices will be hefty, in fact, I think you’ll find they will probably be reasonable.  I think if you give yourself $10 per meal per day (without beverages), you should be able to get three meals and maybe more.  Just guessing though.  If you are camping and have a vehicle, stop at the grocery store ahead of time in Palm Springs or anywhere in the area to stock up on food to have at your site.

And I’m in agreement with Andy from OH on the band bashing.  It’s childish and so negative.  Why get upset or call people noobs who don’t know the band or that they clearly don’t know what they’re talking about, etc etc? This isn’t a contest about who knows more or who’s been a fan longer.  None of it matters and that thinking creates such bad vibes and feelings.  Save the drama for your mama.  The band is going to play what they’ll play, and whatever they pick, they’ll do a good job doing.  They are professional musicians.  For some people it will rock and be exactly what they hoped for, others might say ‘shit, that’s not what I was hoping for’, and others may go ‘what the F…huh, why?’  Whatever the Halloween set, I agree with Andy that “I’d like to think that Phish fans represent the best music fans, who are open-minded.”  We are paying a lot of money and making a trek to Indio to hear a band we love.  So why waste time getting upset…esp on something that hasn’t even happened.  Speculation arguments….Just have fun playing the guessing game.  We’re all going to be surprised no matter what.  But we should just be happy that we get to spend three days in the SoCal desert with our friends, listening to music, enjoying sun and warm weather, playing dress up, and checking out all the great things at the event.  It’s the experience as a whole and these guys put on great festivals.  And the Halloween set, although a focal point of the weekend, is just a piece of three days. There are seven other sets, including the acoustic set Sunday morning, which will be treat!

Hot Rats axed. Bummer!  I am secretly hoping for “Purple Rain.”  Great room for improvisation and would love to hear Trey add to the Prince solos.  Can you imagine Trey busting the intro to “When Doves Cry” then the whole crowd freaking out to that groove for 8-minutes…

I just remembered something I heard on the radio a few weeks back.  XRT had an interview with Trey, and they asked him about the Halloween album.  He said that they were about halfway through learning the first album they chose, and then Page called him one day, and the agreed to switch it to another album.  Not sure how this will shed any light on the album, but I just thought it was interesting.

Good catch, ZZYZX.  Thanks for saving me the time of opening the file myself.  : )
