Introduction: The Phish Halloween Album Teaser (September 28th, 2009)

Today the Festival 8 site on Phish.com was updated with yet another teaser animation, only this time instead of teags sayg the location, they're teasing the Halloween cover album.

The new site features a haunted gallery of 99 albums, each a possibility for the musical costume, and each a possible victim of an unfortunate demise.

A handful of albums have already been killed off, and there should be a lot more killing over the next few weeks as the welcome card promises Phish will “play the last record left alive.”

Gotta admit I was pleased to see both of my top choices — Appetite for Destruction and Exile on Main Street — made the list. Figure Appetite is a long-shot but Exile could have a chance.

Place card for Phish Halloween album teaser

Though I doubt this will be quite as uproar-inducing as the Halloween map, it's sure to keep the Festival 8 buzz going strong. Plus it'll also give you a chance to study up on the remaining possibilities (rumor has it there will be 8 albums left when the fest begins) and get familiar with the material, whatever it may be.

WARNING: Spoilers & speculation below. Proceed at your own risk.

Update: The Grateful Living (September 29th @ 12:11 am)

I'm sure this means nothing, but one eagle-eyed fan has noticed that the Grateful Dead are listed as the “Grateful Living” in the xml config file that's driving the gallery. Hmmm… certainly wouldn't mind if American Beauty is “the last record left alive.”

Update: The Grateful Living Part 2 (September 29th @ 2:41 am)

There's a comment below about the Grateful Dead thing pointing out that the word “living” is used in the xml file to denote albums that are still in the mix. I realized that, but in this case it's not just the <stateofbeing> node that says living, but the <title> node as well.

That said, the reader's comment opened my mind up to a much more likely theory. Someone did a search and replace on that xml file, replacing all occurrences of “dead” with “living” — only they didn't select match case — and so the “Grateful Dead” became the “Grateful living.” Note also the lowercase “l” which I incorrectly noted as an uppercase “L” above.

So in effect, I'm still sure it means nothing… other than that speculating on Phish teaser animations is a great way to waste time.

Update: The Grateful Living Part 3 (September 29th @ 1:36 pm)

The Grateful Dead are now listed correctly in the .xml file. Case closed.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 10:36 pm)

Born to Run Languedoc

Strange things are afoot in the haunted gallery, as a number of album covers have started to get a Phish-themed makeover.

  • Phish are in the sardine can on Hello Nasty
  • The hot dog vendor on Pretzel Logic is sporting a viking hat
  • The Boss is playing a Languedoc
  • Trey and Page are moving a keyboard on Moving Pictures
  • T-Rex is now T-rey
  • Tom Petty is wearing a Phish shirt
  • Mike Gordon has joined the Ramones (added 10/7)
  • Rage Against the Machine is now Page Against the Machine (added 10/9)
  • Fishman is on the cover of Exile on Main Street (added 10/10)
  • Ghost in the Machine is now Story of the Ghost in the Machine (added 10/15)
  • AC/DC Back in Black is now AC/DC Bag (added 10/15)
  • Page is in the rearview mirror on the Minutemen album (added 10/16)
  • Fishman's head has been added to one of the Electric Ladyland ladies (added 10/16)

Just as it was starting to feel really repetitive, this is a great twist to keep things interesting.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 11:36 pm)

Original Blind Faith album cover

A commenter below just inquired if anyone noticed that a “new album” had been added to the gallery

Well it's a new album cover, but not a new album. That's the original cover image from Blind Faith's self-titled debut. Rumor has it the naked young girl is Ginger Baker's daughter, but whoever it is she didn't make the cut. The cover was banned in the USA where it was sold with the “bland, but shopper-friendly, band photo.”

Update: Album YouTube Links (October 7th @ 3:23 pm)

Well this is interesting. Some of the albums in the xml config file have been updated to include YouTube links.

I'll give you one guess how many albums got the special treatment…

  1. AC/DC, Hells Bells from Back in Black
  2. Aerosmith, Sweet Emotion from Toys In The Attic (by Gordon/Kottke)
  3. Arcade Fire, Wake Up from Funeral
  4. David Bowie, Oh You Pretty Things from Hunky Dory
  5. David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust from Five Years Live
  6. Led Zeppelin, Going to California from Zeppelin IV
  7. The Band, Up On Cripple Creek from The Band
  8. Clash, Clampdown from London Calling

I sure hope these aren't the finalist because they seem to have forgotten GNR :)

Update: Festival 8 Numerology (October 7th @ 7:17 pm)

Just came across some interesting numerology observations from PTer Sixtwenty294.

8 ball
  • Moving Pictures is Rush's 8th album
  • Escape is Journey's 8th album
  • Kiss Alive II is Kiss's 8th album
  • Tonight's the Night is Neil Young's 8th album
  • Goodbye yellow brick road is Elton John's 8th album (including a live album)
  • Hot Rats is Frank Zappa's 8th album (including comilations) Thx Jeff G.

Plus, they changed 8 album covers — Blind Faith, T.Rex, Springsteen, Beastie Boys, Ramones, Steely Dan, Rush, and Tom Petty. And as noted above, 8 albums have videos.

That's a whole lot of eights. Nice work Sixtwenty294.

Update: Albums with 8 Songs (October 8th @ 12:11 am)

Got some more 8's thanks to a comment from Bryan Lasky — the albums with 8 songs

  • Boston | Boston
  • Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
  • Black Sabbath | Paranoid
  • Metallica | Master Of Puppets
  • Led Zeppelin | IV (Zoso)
  • Pixies | Come On Pilgrim
  • Van Morrison | Astral Weeks
  • Television | Marquee Moon
  • Leonard Cohen | I'm Your Man (eliminated)
  •

Update: YouTube Links Part 2 & 8 Letter Names (October 8th @ 4:55 pm)

A few things to note here.

First, the mis-linked Arcade Fire and Clash videos from yesterday were updated in the xml. Plus, a bunch of additional video links were added some time today. These include…

  1. Frank Zappa, Cosmik Debris from Apostrophe
  2. Led Zeppelin, Misty Mountain Hop from Zeppelin IV
  3. Metallica, Master of Puppets from Master of Puppets
  4. Minutemen, Jesus And Tequila from Double Nickels On The Dime
  5. Nirvana, Lithium from Nevermind
  6. Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb from The Wall
  7. Radiohead, Everything In Its Right Place from Kid A
  8. Rush, YYZ from Moving Pictures
  9. Violent Femmes, Blister In The Sun from Violent Femmes
  10. Yes, I've Seen All Good People from The Yes Album

Next, if you've been enjoying the numbers game and were miffed that there were 10 new videos and not 8, there's a comment from Lorenzo below that I think you'll like — it's the artists on the list with 8 letter names

  • Bob Dylan
  • Bob Seger
  • Brian Eno
  • Firehose
  • Pavement

Update: Electric Ladyland Album Cover (October 8th @ 8:13 pm)

Official Electric Ladyland album cover
Original Electric Ladyland album cover
Linda Eastman Hendrix Experience Alice in Wonderland

Here's an update for the dudes in the front row, and this one actually is riveting.

The official Electric Landyland album cover (left) has been replaced with the original UK cover (center) featuring a harem of late sixties babes. Once again, banned in the USA and elsewhere.

Notably, Hendrix didn't want this cover or the blurry red and yellow mugshot. Instead he'd requested they use a Linda Eastman photo (right) of the Experience sitting with some kids on the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park. Given a vote, I'd have chosen the babes.

Update: Links to Album Streams (October 9th @ 12:52 pm)

For your listening pleasure, I've stated linking up some of the albums below to free, legal streams on Grooveshark. Unfortunately most of their playlists are incomplete or have tons of duplicates, so you basically need to create each one by hand which is time consuming.

That said, if anyone's feeling ambitious and wants to take on an album or two it'd be greatly appreciated. Just shoot me an email or post a comment with the playlist link.

Update: Fall Tour Dates Announced (October 9th @ 10:32 am)

Nothing to do with albums or 8's, but Fall Tour Dates have been announced.

Update: Video Links Part 3 (October 9th @ 1:30 pm)

Got another handful of additional video links that were added some time today. These include…

  1. Blind Faith, Can't Find My Way Home from Blind Faith
  2. Genesis, In the Cage from Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  3. Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced from Are You Experienced
  4. King Crimson, Talking Drum from Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. Van Morrison, Cyprus Avenue from Astral Weeks

Update: Albums with Horns (October 13th @ 12:31 am)

The rumor mill is rapidly churning with the notion that there will be horns at Festival 8, presumably for the musical costume. Here's a list of albums you might be hearing if that rumor pans out…

  • Curtis Mayfield | Superfly Soundtrack
  • Chicago | The Chicago Transit Authority
  • David Bowie | Ziggy Stardust
  • Frank Zappa | Apostrophe
  • Frank Zappa | Hot Rats
  • Michael Jackson | Thiller
  • Miles Davis | A Tribute To Jack Johnson
  • Pink Floyd | The Wall
  • Radiohead | Kid A
  • Steely Dan | Pretzel Logic
  • T.Rex | Electric Warrior

  • The Band | The Band (aka Brown Album)
  • The Clash | London Calling
  • The Police | Ghost in the Machine

Meanwhile, I'm generally averse to Hitler but the video above cracks me up every time so I'm just embedding to avoid having to go to YouTube — and for the 3 people who still haven't seen it.

Update: Mike's Hotline Hint & more (October 13th @ 11:15 pm)

A few things to report, aside from the fact that CCR, ZZ Top, and the Ramones were killed off today.

First, Mike's hotline is offering a very Gordonesque “hint” at the Halloween album — singing a line from the chorus of the Go-Gos Out Lips Are Sealed. Personally I prefer the Hilary / Haley Duff version. Hear Mike for yourself at 212-330-9092.

Added 10/14 @ 5:45 pm Lots of message board chatter that lips could be a thinly veiled Stones reference.

Added 10/19 @ 8:23 pm “Our lips are sealed” is a lyric in the song Elevation by Television. Coincidence?

Second, I've started a gallery of Festival 8 posters that's already got great art by folks like AJ Masthay, Jamie Huntsman, and Not Pollock.

Finally, I'm doing a Series II Page bobblehead giveaway. This one features Page as The Chairman of the Boards, my favorite of all the bobbles so far.

Update: Phish Festivalography on Sirius (October 14th @ 12:10 am)

Not sure if I'm late to the game on this but I just got wind of a cool sounding show on Sirius called “Phish Festivalography.” It's a four part series starting Thursday the 15th at 9:00 pm Eastern (with replay at 2 am).

Hosted by Jonathan Schwartz from “Gone Phishin',” the exclusive series will cover Phish's festival history in words and music. Sounds promising.

Update: Miner's Case for Ziggy Stardust (October 14th @ 3:00 pm)

Spiders from Mars Fleece

Mr. Miner over at Phish thoughts has made the case for Ziggy Stardust:

For the elaborate theatrics and space-aged costumes alone, Ziggy Stardust would make a superb spectacle for the Halloween set. But beyond the glamorous show this album could provide, the music and lyrics of Bowie’s record fit perfectly with Phish’s place in time.

Read Miner's full post for more.

In other news, Zeppelin IV was just eliminated! Kinda figured that one would stick around for a while but alas, it's gone.

Update: The Album Elimination Set (October 14th @ 5:15 pm)

Got what I think might be a fun concept that revolves around the premise / rumor that there will be 8 albums left at Festival time.

Imagine you have just woken up from a dream. In that dream you were at Festival 8 and the band threw a major curve-ball 2nd set Friday, eliminating albums by playing 6 covers plus a cover encore — one from each of the 7 albums NOT being played.

So for example, in my dream it might look something like this:

  1. Detroit Rock City (Kiss)
  2. Communication Breakdown (Zeppelin)
  3. Poem 58 (Chicago)
  4. Counting Out Time (Genesis)
  5. Every Little Thing She Does (Police)
  6. Rip this Joint (Stones)
  7. Encore: Paradise City (GNR)

Stream a compilation of this fake set

Notably, I mixed and matched what I'd want them to play with what I think they'd play, which I think makes a huge difference, and is probably how a real dream would unfold.

Also note that I believe it's highly unlikely that they'll eliminate the final albums this way*, but given this concept, what would they play in your dream? Post a comment below once you've given it some thought.

* My insane hypothesis here, in case you were wondering, is that they will have a real life version of the haunted gallery. This will be designed by the guy who did the installations at Hampton and Bonnaroo. Throughout the first two days of the fest actors will come in and kill these larger than life covers with real chainsaws, hatchets, spurting blood, etc. The final 3 or so will be killed on stage in a theatrical experience immediately preceding the costume set Saturday.

Update: The Dead are Dead (October 14th @ 8:50 pm)

Crying Dancing Bear

Oh man, you step away for a few hours and they go and kill off the good ol' Grateful Dead. I didn't think for a second they were going to play this, but I wouldn't have complained. For those who were hoping for this one, the only solace I have to offer is this: Terrapin from Virginia Beach '98. Enjoy.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Bands with 4 Members (October 15th @ 12:40 am)

Here's an interesting observation from Greg below: all the bands phish has covered have been 4 members (at one point or another). If that trend continues, here's who you might hear:

  • Black Sabbath
  • Blind Faith
  • Boston (technically)
  • Genesis (v1.0)
  • Kiss
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Metalica
  • Modern Lovers
  • Pink Floyd
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Television
  • The Clash
  • The Doors
  • The Pixies
  • U2
  • Van Halen
  • Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Greg goes on to jokingly note, “That's 16 bands left. 2 weeks left. 16 divided by 2 is 8!!!!!” Fascinating. Just added the Clash and there are now 17 bands in the list rendering Greg's joke humorless.

Update: Handicapping the Albums (October 16th @ 9:40 am)

I don't think anyone's actually keeping books, but Eric Wyman and Matt Dubno have been handicapping the remaining albums. Here are a few of their picks:

  • Sticky Fingers | Matt @ 20:1, Eric @ 3:2
  • Exile on Main Street | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 12:1
  • Moving Pictures | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 25:1
  • Hot Rats | Matt @ 12:1, Eric @ 75:1
  • Electric Ladyland | Matt @ 8:1, Eric @ 3:1

See more handicapping action at 99 Halloweens.

Update: The Campground Albums (October 16th @ 11:50 am)

So this latest rumor has been circulating a bit but the din finally got loud enough that I've decided to post it. People are now saying that there will be 8 campgrounds at Festival 8, one for each of the finalist albums. Here's the rumored list…

  1. David Bowie | Hunky Dory
  2. Genesis | The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway | SBD
  3. Jimi Hendrix | Electric Ladyland
  4. King Crimson | Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. MGMT | Oracular Spectacular
  6. Prince | Purple Rain
  7. Radiohead | Kid A
  8. Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street

I'd take it for what it is, a rumor, but that list pretty well thought out. As I'm sure is the case for most folks, there's a few of my favorites (Stones, Jimi, Genesis), a few I'm not so big on (Radiohead, MGMT), a few I could go either way on (Bowie, Prince), and one I've yet to hear (King Crimson).

Crowd favorite Ziggy Stardust is noticeably absent, leading some to speculate that they'll play a non-campground album. But I'm not so sure as that would mean they'd be playing an album that was previously eliminated, a concept that didn't go over so well with California on the teaser map.

Finally, I saw a great suggestion on another board — the band could go around the campsites late-night and serenade each with a performance of a few tunes from their respective albums. That's probably about the only thing that would make me question my hotel decision, but time will tell.

Update: Much on the Horizon at 8 (October 16th @ 4:40 pm)

Update: The Killer Album Theory (October 16th @ 6:20 pm)

Okay. Here's a theory (not mine) that's either totally obvious or totally out-there, or perhaps a little bit of both.

Let it Bleed Album Cover

The obvious part of the theory (or at least already been discussed here and there) is that the Halloween album is not actually on the list.

The out-there part is that the 100th album is actually the murderer — the one doing all the killing — and that album would be, pun intended, Let it Bleed… the Stones 8th album.

Look forward to your comments on this one.

Hat tip to Cassidy B. for the theory.

Update: Ryan Kerrigan's 8 Balls, David Welker Scratchboard (October 17th @ 5:49 pm)

Ryan Kerrigan Festival 8 Ball

Just added some great stuff to the Festival 8 poster gallery including a set of hand-painted 8 balls by Ryan Kerrigan and an incredible scratchboard piece by David Welker (who also did the Rift cover).

If this is any indication of the type of stuff people will be slinging at the Festival, I might just need an extra suitcase.

Nice work gents.

Update: Pictures at an Exhibition (October 18th @ 11:16 am)

A few followup thoughts to the 100th album theory have emerged in the comment thread below, including one comment from ben who suggests Alice Cooper's 1971 album Killer as the 100th album, noting also that Alice is playing in town on the 30th.

ELP Pictures at an Exhibition

Second, and perhaps more intriguing, is this comment from stealingtime about ELP's 1971 album Pictures at an Exhibition

I doubt they'd play this, as the album has hardly any guitar (listen here) but man does that album cover bear striking resemblance to the Phish gallery or what?

Update: Vendor Map of Festival Grounds (October 19th @ 5:30 pm)

Update removed. Sorry.

Update: Upper Playground / Sonic Living “Day 1” (October 19th @ 10:15 pm)

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8
Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Came across this link on PhishPosters.com tonight. I'm not familiar with either Upper Playground or Sonic Living, both of whom have logos on these, but someone on PhishPosters is guessing that these are Festival 8 laminate designs.

These aren't quite as cool as past laminates if that's the case, though there's plenty of cool stuff in the UP news feed like this brilliant photo gallery of an urban narcolepsy epidemic.

Update: 10:38 pm Interesting. There's a poster gallery on the Sonic Living site that includes these images, sans text. The guitar gun is by Jeremy Fish, the cityscape by Marco Zamora, and the bike by Sam Flores.

Despite the update, I'm still not sure what the examples above are supposed to be . Post a comment if you have any ideas.

Update: Seeking photos from Phish fans (October 21st  @ 1:18 pm)

Local Indio paper The Desert Sun is looking for great photos from past Phish festivals. See here for details and an email address to send pics.

Update: Festival 8 to be Filmed in 3D (October 21st  @ 2:04 pm)

3D glasses

I heard this rumor from a pretty reliable source last week, but this recent PT post seems to confirm it: Festival 8 will be filmed in 3D! Pretty sure that doesn't mean a simulcast, but it could mean a sweet ass IMAX film down the road along the lines of U2 3D or my other favorite band, the Jonas Brothers.

Update: Burble & Borealis (October 22nd @ 5:22 pm)

Here are two of the amazing interactive sculptures that might be melting your face at Festival 8…

Burble

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A spectacular, futuristic sculpture of helium-filled balloons packed with LEDs and infrared sensors that floats above spectators in response to infra-red signals and its immediate environment.

Borealis

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A mirage-like installation that glows with colours and ebullient patterns created in response to the competing and collaborative voices, music and screams of people nearby.

Update: Behold the Plasma Cutter (October 23rd @ 5:00 pm)

Here's some more neat stuff the likes of which you just might see at Festival 8. It's two amazing metal sculptures from the portfolio of San Francisco based Dan Das Mann. As you can see, he's not only a genius with the plasma cutter, but also knows a thing or two about melting faces.

Update: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings @ F8? (October 24th @ 10:30 pm)

Here's a rumor that, if true, has been of the better kept secrets of this whole affair.

As posted in this comment, word is Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will join Phish for the musical costume at Festival 8.

The video at right should give you a good idea of Ms. Jones's superb vocals and the Dap-Kings funk / soul musical stylings.

No complaints from this guy if this is legit, which I believe it be. Especially if it means an Exile on Main Street (or Let it Bleed) costume.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Colossal Testaments in Steel and Stone (October 25th @ 3:00 pm)

Here's a trio of large-scale sculptures from Rosanna Scimeca, another artist you might be seeing at 8. According to her site, Rosanna likes to “explore how the observer may interface, interact, and identify with her installations.” Yeah, I can give her a preview: they're going bug out.

Update: Pollock Halloween Mask + HeadCount Trivia Contest (October 26th @ 1:45 pm)

Today Jambands.com posted information about a Pollock Halloween mask to be available at the WaterWheel table gallery throughout Festival 8. Plus, HeadCount will be running a trivia contest and the grand prize winner will get an uncut sheet of masks with a  one-of-kind Pollock doodle.

Sample trivia question: “What town does Trey Anastasio, John Popper of Blues Traveler and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors all hale from?”

Pollock Festival 8 Teaser

There's also the recently surfaced image at right, which I believe to be a teaser for a Pollock Festival 8 poster, though I'm not 100% on that.

Poster or not, can't wait to see the mask! In the mean time, here's a growing Festival 8 poster gallery.

Update: Stage Photo & Viewing Platform Sketch (October 26th @ 6:45 pm)

Today Twitter user @BathtubGym posted what I believe to be the first pic of the stage setup, as well as a sketch of the viewing platform for the Dan Das Mann installation.

I'm sure I'll say this ten times over the next 2 days, but I can't believe I just got MORE excited.

Update: Festival 8 to be Simulcast Live on Sirus (October 26th @ 9:54 pm)

This just in: all 8 sets of Festival 8 including the musical costume and acoustic set will be simulcast live on JamOn, channel 17 on SIRIUS!!!

Not a subscriber? Good news… you can sign up for a free trial and hear the simulcast without spending a dime. Huge thanks to whoever is responsible for arranging this. Jam On!

Update: They Have Created Fire (October 27th @ 1:56 am)

If you're anything like me, you're somehow riveted by fire — and you'll definitely be making it a point to see this six-pack fire artists rumored to be appearing at Festival 8:

Update: Glitches, XML fun, & Gordon's Hotline (October 28th @ 1:18 pm)

The Wall

Looks like there was some sort of glitch in the album teaser on Phish.com for a bit when Apostrophe was killed — as the gallery was only showing living albums, and the Wall and Exile had gone missing. All seems back to normal now, though the Wall is indeed dead as seen at right.

Also appears that someone's having some fun with the xml file — with Michael Jackson changing to “Michael Jackson Is Alive“ and Yes changing to “Yes Yes Yes Yes.“ — but I'm not reading into either of those too much.

Speaking of having fun, Gordon's hotline (212-330-9092) has had two recent updates, the latest playing off the 100th album theories that are floating around.

And last but not least, I just checked into my flight for tomorrow. If anyone's on Southwest from Chicago at 12:35, hit me up for a free drink coupon. I'll be the dork carrying the poster tube.

Update: Jamtopia Meetup | Friday. Setbreak. Picnic Area. (October 28th @ 4:18 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

Okay, let's make this thing official.

After extensive reviews of the map and comments, I believe the best time and place to meet is setbreak on Friday at the picnic area. It's at the back of the concert field Page side.

That way if people want to hit the Honey Bucket or grab food or drinks or whatever it's all convenient.

Update: Get a FREE scoop of Ben & Jerry's (October 28th @ 5:24 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

I just got an email from Ben & Jerry's with some great news.

In addition to being huge fans of Jamtopia, Vermont's finest ice cream purveyors will be offering free scoops of Phish Food at Festival 8.

All you have to do is “particip8” in a social action with one of the charities at the WaterWheel booth (e.g. sign a petition, make a donation) to get your free delights.

Sweet.

Update: More Stage Photos (October 28th @ 6:25 pm)

Got some more stage pics, this time from Twitter user @briankarol:

I'm thinking they need more speakers!

Update: Festival 8 Wristband (October 29th @ 12:11 am)

Festival 8 wristband

I'm not sure if this is a staff wristband or just the standard issue, but either way it looks pretty sweet sauce. If the production values of this wristband are any indication this is really going to be one hell of a shindig.

Meanwhile, as I write this, Van Morrison and Zeppelin were killed off. Only 9 remain. Can't get there soon enough.

Update: Festival 8 Shout-out on Conan (October 29th @ 8:08 am)

Well this is surreal. Masterfully bearded Phish fan Rob Howard was in the Late Night crowd yesterday and got interviewed by Conan to “promote Phish.”

As you'll see when you watch the video, Conan had a little something extra planned to help get the word out about Festival 8.

Props to Rob for representing Phish — and the great state of Illinois :)

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

2033 Comments so far

would love to see ‘em cover KISS!!

And that would also make for a great costume

The 8 albums that have video links (Noted above) do in fact work and go to a you-tube video of a song from that album…

they should have photoshopped Fishman in his muumuu in the background of prince’s “purple rain” album

I love JENNIFER HARTSWICK !!!

23 days to go Phans…
and I still got my chips on Zep 1

Television - Marquee Moon, come on, make it happen.

@phunk4: See here…
http://assets.phish.com.s3.amazonaws.com/halloween2009/albums/ramones.jpg
... and make sure to shift-reload or however you normally get a clear cache.

it says in the blog that the Ramones album has been changed to include Mike but it looks normal to me.

I’m sure sombody else has already noticed this.  Has anybody thought about the fact that they put all the albums in “picture” frames and they “move” on your screen?  The Rush album is called Moving Pictures.  Just Sayin’

It should be said for the record that the only album that is capitalized in the xml config file is Alive2 - just to add to he carzyness

Looks like one band has a new member: Mike Ramone and Yoko is canoodling with Ginger under the tree…

@Nicholas: That’s just what the cover looks like…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Rain_(album)

What’s up with the album art behind prince’s Purple Rain.

A possible album to be unveiled?

Hmm , good call on 461 Ocean Blvd. I forgot all the great tunes, rock with a tinge of reggae, perfect! Plus first album Eric did after quitting Heroin. I Shot the Sheriff and Let It Grow! Other Dak Horse is Ghost in the Machine, another rock/post-punk/reggae masterpiece. I would love to hear Fishman play the Police.

On the Hello Nasty album cover the guys are in the sardine can!

after reviewing all of the track listings i think that there are only a few possibilities, and a lot of albums that they can’t play for obvious reasons. first off, they have to be able to play it live, harder said than done! no ambient crap like radiohead or mgmt, sounds like shit live. That right! i said radiohead sucks! ill never forgive em if they play that horrible opiate inspired bullshit! It’s got to be rock n mother fuckin roll bitches! Ziggy Stardust shits on most of these albums as does moving pictures and my big sleeper pick…... 461 Ocean Blvd.

ahhh thank you very much todd

@areyouexperiencedhopeful: It’s an alternate cover of Blind Faith’s debut. See above for details.

ya i noticed that too…it doesnt matter im goin with the doors

has anyone noticed the new album that was put up its a nude chick holding what looks to be an airplane? and that was not orignally there…

Phans, doesn’t it feel a bit strange though… they give us 99 albums, that’s 99 not 100, and it is Halloween where tricks are part of the trade. I would love to see a few of these performed by Phish (namely Are you Experienced, Ziggy Stardust, Meddle, Exile) but maybe they have something else up their sleeves. I know this has been said before and there are resurrection rumors as well, but I just wanted keep that voice alive. But all in all we the phans win no matter what. I sure have had a blast re-listening to this collection !

I’m just excited because a horn section means Gumbo and Julius the way they were meant to be heard!

As for an album, I have no honest prediction, but I hope it’s Meddle, The Wall, Pretzel Logic, The Doors, or Master of Puppets (for the lulz).

Bob Dylan Basement Tapes just got axed on my screen

I have noticed that are the albums are moving… Hint Hint….

It has to be one of these - in order of my prefs - most likley Stones or Zep but Television would be sweet - Halloween - cadillac graveyard - maybe?

Clash or Ramones would be great but not really Phish-y are they?

1) Television - Marquee Moon
2) Zeppelin - Zeppelin IV
3) Clash - London Calling
4) Stones - Exile on Main St.
5) Ramones - The Ramones
6) Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
7) U2 - Joshua Tree
8) AC/DC - Back In Black
9) Z Z Top - Tres Hombres
10) Neil Young - Tonights the Night

Chicago Transit Authority is my dark horse album.  Some of their biggest hits, it’s a surprisingly jammed-out album, a double album to boot, and requires a horn section.  The ingredients are all there, and it would surprise some people.

I also think they’d tear the Yes Album a new a**hole.  Instrumentally it’s right up their alley, but vocally it could be a nightmare. (Same with Rush’s Moving Pictures)

Exile seems like the most likely choice to me, however.

London Calling definitely has to be one of the Top 10 most logical of the ones that are left.  Goddamn, I would kill to see a jammed-out Train In Vain.

I’ve been hearing lots of buzz about a HORN section.

not sure if it’s for the alum cover or the third set.

anybody know what’s going on with member of classic TAB?  They could be involved?

Question: what album would require a good horn section?

Amazing that few if any of you are giving serious consideration to The Clash.  I was picking London Calling or Sandanista before they released the 99 and I still think LC should be in any serious analysis.  It’s really not about what the fan faves are—just look at 96 and 98.  It’s about what the band loves and thinks is influential.  Just saying…

Predictions by band:
Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
Jimi Hendrix
David Bowie

By album:
Exile
IV
Are You Experienced?
Ziggy

Zep I

Coffee and Doughnuts…has anyone claimed The Police yet? I feel like this is a no-brainer.

KISS

mgmt

Predictions:

Zeppelin IV
Hot Rats
Zeppelin I
Queen

ANYTHING BUT RADIOHEAD…PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Oom Pa Pa I didn’t have time to read your whole posting. I’ll have to wait until I can copy and paste it into my Kindle.

Electric Ladyland
It’s one of the few double albums on the list and the only one I can really see them rocking out on live.

I also wouldn’t mind Appetite, Master, Boston, Exile or Led Zep I.

pink floyd please

I hear there is going to be a horn section for this. Hmmmm…......

It will be Neil Young and he will maybe even make a guest appearance. I know this because I loathe his voice, (not the music) and I will be punished for not liking him. Otherwise I’d be happy with anything.

I was “Dead” set on Hunky Dory but then listened to Ziggy again and to me, this makes the obvious choice. “Five Years” to start (how long they’ve been gone?) and the flow of the album just dictates an awesome show. Prominent piano for Page (who should IMO sing the majority of this album) and since they’re doing the acoustic set Trey could have multiple guitars set up. Plus you’ve got keepers for down the road, and best of all we get “Aaaaaaaahh Wam Bam Thank You Ma’am”!!!!!

IS there really any doubt what they’re gonna play??? THRILLER all the way.

what about Joshua Tree - Indio is right next to JT National Park.  i think that would be pretty cool, however i don’t think i’ll be disappointed whatever they end up playing
oh and please no Neil Young, or Eagles . . .  I hate the F****ing Eagles

Predictions (in order of likelihood):
1.  Sticky Fingers
2.  Ziggy Stardust
3.  Oracular Spectacular

ANYTHING BUT ZAPPA PLEASE!!!  I know I’ll draw some hate but he really gets on my nerves.

apostrophe

Yep, Ziggy and the Spiders has all the key ingredients + so many familiar Bowie songs they havent covered, the album is about the rise and fall of a rock band! AND the costume would be spaced out freakin hilarious.
“There’s a Starman waiting in the sky”
Iam also assumeing covering a band that is currently on reunion tour like Kiss currently active, like U2, just kinda uncool. And forget about Kid A, no band could do Radioheads vocals without sounding awful and it would be a waste of fishmans drum chops.

If I had to chose, 1. Zappa(Hot Rats)
                2. Van Halen
                3.Boston.

it’s gonna be ‘The Band’ - “The Band”...

for the record…

send money to:

Happy Dude
My House
Pgh, PA

My guess (and even before they released this list of 99 albums) was and always will be: David Bowie-“Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”!!
Hands down…

It’s obvious to me that it’s gonna’ be LZ IV or the Stones’ Exile since they’ve already covered the Velvet Underground, the Beatles, Talking Heads, the Who & Pink Floyd and aren’t likely to do a second album by any of these bands.  Zeppelin or the Stones would make for a rockin’ Halloween set and they could pull either of these albums off well while keeping the crowd into it unlike some of the other choices listed.  Phish is talented enough to play anyone else’s material, but this will be a carefully selected musical costume, original for them and high energy.  Can’t wait to hear Harpua!  “There’s a dog in the station…”

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway would be awesome, but I would also like Hot Rats, with Fishman doing a vacuum cleaner solo in Willie The Pimp. I just hope they do something challenging (and dare I say proggy).

Exile

I’ve been doing some listening to these albums…
after some consideration, here are my current straight up picks:

RUSH - Moving Pictures
or
The Doors - The Doors

Either of these would work and be fun…but really, I don’t think this will happen….Phish might be up to something. Trey has been speaking about changing their mind a few times in interviews…they are themselves digging into these same albums as we are. Maybe they hadn’t even decided yet, until they announced the Acoustic Set, that is…

I imagine them doing a hodge-podge of covers for the “Halloween Set” Saturday night…with various tunes from lots of these albums….imagine a Tom Sawyer->Break on Through->Thriller for example….A mix of songs from these albums would kick ass….how about a Purple Haze ->Ziggy Stardust ?
Anyway, it would rip…

And then, the following morning, as part of the acoustic set, they drop…
Grateful Dead - American Beauty…the whole thing. maybe with special guests even…

Anyway, those are my guesses.

you want thoughts.  What was the last song they played and what followed for house music.  Highway to Hell, Going to California.  They have always been a band with purpose.  I would be completely shocked if it wasn’t Floyd or AC/DC.  Who really cares because it will be great.  They are not the band of dissappointment lately.

If they play thriller, I would hope the rest of you would join me and boycott these guys.  It would be almost as bad as coventry.

Since when does phish want to appease mainstream critics? Who are the phools?

A friend of mine and I have been wanting Phish to cover Thriller since 03.  I think this will be the year!

@thnkfstpal from Los Angeles - Fool! Phish doesn’t care about cementing their status among mainstream music critics. I assure you that. That being said, your logic would dictate that there’s no reason to play Kid A. I’m not big on Radiohead but I do realize that many people regard Kid A to be a great album. I just don’t think it would be appropriate for this one.
I predict Hendrix, Are you experienced as the one they’ll play but I have Back in Black, Thriller and Van Halen Van Halen as the frontrunners. These aren’t the same as the one I am hoping for though. They’re just the ones I think have the best chance. My hope is The Clash’s London Calling.

My head it landed.. to the sound of cricket bows.

Also, it’s going to be hilarious when the guy on the Sticky Fingers cover gets an axe right in his junk.

Since the announcement of a halloween set, I have been predicting Back in Black by AC/DC, I feel like it just kind of makes sense.

I also believe that Thriller has to be one of the front runners.  I think Pearl Jam’s Ten would make for an amazing set, even though it’s probably a long shot.

My prediction is MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular.

Very dancable, creative songwriting, and a lot of the lyrics fit into phish’s current situation and outlook.

If you haven’t heard the album, find it and listen to song #1 - Time To Pretend.

FOOLS!, if phish want to cement their status among mainstream music critics and alum they WILL perform KID A.

A) Trey’s was watching NIN and other indie bands at Bonnarroo with his daughter.

B) The festival is AT COACHELLA the indie rock Bonnarroo. Radiohead is the Phish of Indie rock.

This will blow everyones minds and the mainstream press will be talking about it for weeks and Livephish downloads will be through the roof.

If they know what’s good for them they will play KID A

My top 2 choices as of now are:

Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Neil Young - Everybody Knows This is Nowhere

My prediction is The Band(Brown Album)

OK, so here’s just a few options:

Close the daytime set on 10/31 with David Bowie & launch into Ziggy Stardust for the cover set.  The placement of Bowie would also work if they wanted to get into some serious Disco Biscuits type shit and open & close the festival with it.  Maybe something epic like Bowie -> Curtain (With) to open the festival then Curtain (Without) -> Bowie to finish it all up, with a big fat ZS or Hunky Dory in the dead center.

Open the cover set with a Good Times Bad Times tease (the double E signaling Zep I) but then launch into Black Dog (“Hey hey mama said the way you move” performed like a la their end of Helter Skelter before ripping into the rest of Zep IV).  “Going To California” would elicit a pretty feverish response, and no matter how cliche it would be I imagine that “Stairway” would effing own.  The literality of Zep IV is what I think may kill it as an option, considering it is THE quintessential rock album.

Toys In The Attic would crush, but hearing them sing it makes me cringe.  Pretty swank idea though.

They will not do The Wall.

They will also not do Ten, Nevermind, Master of Puppets, Appetite For Destruction, The Joshua Tree, Born To Run, Evil Empire or A Night At The Opera.  They will also not perform Electric Ladyland; too much Jimi material that is unfamiliar to the “casual” fan and at this point it’s more cliche to cover All Along The Watchtower than…well, anything.  For all of the gimmicks they pull out of their hat, they are not a gimmicky band.  These are all gimmick albums.  How bored would you get by the time they got to track 4 of Ten or by the time Disposable Heroes comes up on MoP?  Yes, Welcome To The Jungle would be funny.  Sweet Child O’ Mine would not.

They’re too professional to fall back on Thriller or Purple Rain.  They’d better be, anyway.  Either one is a joke album, but a) PR is WAY too cheesy and b) Thriller has been hyped too much and they’re not literal enough to pay that direct of a tribute.  But a Thriller encore (complete with zombie dancers) wouldn’t surprise me even a little bit.

They don’t dare perform Kid A, and I think we all know why.

Depending on which version of Are You Experienced? they go for, there are multiple options but the UK reissue started with Foxy Lady, of which the intro could be extended to a comically long length… when the lights finally explode and the beat drops that place is going to go nuts.  The title track from this would be legendary and could become another live staple from an album that also includes “Fire”, “Manic Depression”, “Red House”, “Hey Joe”, “The Wind Cries Mary”, and “Purple Haze” just to name a few.

Can you picture the giant shit-eating grin that would plaster Trey’s face as he exclaims, “Have you ever been experienced?  I have!” or “Feeling sweet feeling drops from my fingers, fingers…” Thinking about Mike singing Wind Cries Mary just made me laugh out loud.

All of the albums they’ve done before had a few classic hits but relied even heavier on deep album cuts that were ripe for experimentation.  Look at Remain In Light.  It still remains one of their finest moments.

There is enough variation in genre to make AYE? performed as the classic it is.  Everyone would have plenty of room to stretch their improv legs, and you could even get into some hilarious vacuum shit with Fishman in Third Stone From The Sun with Trey drumming.

Are You Experienced? would be the best option here, but I would still pay to hear Phish cover Michael McDonald if it comes down to it.

I’m hoping for Thriller or Nevermind. Either would make for an amazing set.

This is too easy to predict (if Vegas only hadd odds on this): Exile on Main St.

YES ALBUM!!!

I’m going with Meddle. Echoes will be something to remember.

If you look at the xml file, The Band’s image file is listed as “theLastWaltz.jpg”  Could they have grabbed the wrong cover image?

So ya thought ya might like to go to the show.. To feel the warm thrill of confusion, that space cadet glow. I got me some bad news for you, Sunshine, Pink isn’t well, he stayed back at the hotel, and he sent us along as a surrugate band. We’re gonna find out where you fans really stand. Are there any queers in the theatre tonight? Get ‘em up against the wall.—‘Gainst the wall! And that one in the spotlight, he don’t look right to me. Get him up against the wall.—‘Gainst the wall! And that one looks Jewish, and that one’s a coon. Who let all this riffraff into the room? There’s one smoking a joint, and another with spots! If I had my way I’d have all of ya shot!!!!

Man, at the request of that dude above, I pulled out my vinyl copy of The Police - Ghost in the Machine.  It wasn’t one that jumped out at me right away but after giving it a good listen, I think it could fit very well.  Demolition Man would be the new Crosseyed & Painless.  In defense to Thriller, neither Loaded or Remain in Light clock in at over 45 minutes, nor were theatrical or terribly complex undertakings but both of course rocked.  learning The Beatles White Album as a group in a matter of weeks was something that 30 year old single guys who had played 6 hours a day straight for the previous 8 years could hammer down alot easier than 45 year old guys who have families and have up to this last spring, had played begrudgingly intermittent together for the last 8.  I would set your expectations as high (the wall) or you will likely be disappointed by something that will turn out to be pretty good anywho.

Any reason why no album killing was done yesterday (10/2)?

Mcbrian, I said it was going to be the Wall in only the second post.

The fact that not one person here has said it will be the WALL makes me sure as shit that it will be the wall.  The 3 hour break between the 1st and 2nd sets will give them time to set up all the theatrics required to pull off the wall.  The wall also requires horns as mentioned above (Jen Hartswick).  If you think of Phish and how they exceed expectations at all times, the Wall is the only choice.  Thriller is only 40 minutes long.  Not gonna be thriller.

Hell,  Thanks Phish.  I was in a rut musically and this whole thing has made me go back and listen to some really great records that I wouldn’t have thought to.  Months ago, I had initially called Thriller or else a cali record - doors, van halen (they had wanted to bring out david lee roth for 98 Vegas), appitite or even joes garage or blood sugar sex magic that didnt make the list.  Now, I can harbor hopes that Ritual De Lo Habitual, Marquee Moon, Yankee Foxtrot, Chicago I, Purple Rain, Moving Pictures or X may be honest considerations.  If for what ever reason it is Kiss Alive II (which why not the first one), do they play just the three live sides or those three plus the super gay 4th side with the terrible studio fillers?

my top ten:
american beauty, duh
marquee moon
astral weeks
pet sounds
the doors
violent femmes
are you experienced
blood on the tracks
ziggy stardust
double nickels on the dime

bummed on losing:
fear of music
velvet underground ‘n’ nico
rubber soul etc
but those obviously had to go.

it would be incredible to see them do something punk rock like fIREHOSE or television. i’m curious to see what sort of energy that’d evoke. i’d be really bummed to see them do something schticky like journey or thriller or zz top, but i’m an art rock purist so don’t listen to me too much when it comes to that. they’d kill any of those albums.

can i put more on my list? fuckin’ born to run!

boys, hear me out please: american beauty. i know it’s obvious or whatever i don’t care. all i want in my life is to hear a little brokedown palace. my goodness, could you imagine that? i assume it’ll be between american beauty and the wall, for the most part in these discussions. marquee moon though, really.

Here’s another vote for Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.  I listened to this album last night and Phish would KILL IT!

please please please please please please please be television, marquee moon, the title track is over ten minutes long and right up phishs alley, hell the WHOLE album is. that would be stellar!!! if not, leds fourth album would be cool

One other artist I think who deserves credit for 2 albums is Peter Gabriel as the lamb lies down on Broadway while a band effort was really mostly his album.

I am hoping for blood on the tracks or the resurrection of eat a peach.

but suspect tres hombres or london calling(then next year we do it in london)

I’m feeling The Modern Lovers. Don’t ask me why, I just feel it…

G[Ghost in the machine!

Spirits in the Material World” – 2:59
“Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” – 4:22
“Invisible Sun” – 3:44
“Hungry for You (J’aurais Toujours Faim de Toi)” – 2:52
“Demolition Man” – 5:57
“Too Much Information” – 3:43
“Rehumanize Yourself” (Sting, Stewart Copeland) – 3:10
“One World (Not Three)” – 4:47
“Ωmegaman” (Andy Summers) – 2:48 (“Omegaman” on some editions)
“Secret Journey”– 3:34
“Darkness” (Copeland)

It better be Hot Rats or ill shit

The only insight I can add is the fact that Phish likes having fun and messing with their fans (in a good way).  Everyone said California, then Phish pulled Cali from the map.  After the dust settled, they brought it back and announced Indio as the location.  So basically, what I am saying is that I wouldn’t put it past them to resurrect a record that is “no longer living.”

For my money though, Hall and Oates would be hysterical.

My Top 3:

The Police   Ghost In The Machine
Queen         A Night At The Opera
Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced?

Metallica….......thats what im puttin down cracka.

If there going for show-looks-fun- all out rock costume extravaganza then Kiss would be the sh*t! Although kiss would probably sue or something.
But considering the albums they’ve covered in the past have been true   ‘classics’ & unique musically, I would think Pet Sounds is in the running, but aging vocal chords might not cut it for that.
Rush-Moving Pictures opens with Tom Sawyer !!!!
Just imagine it, it is also right up there alley musically(progressive meets pop) and can be sung in a lower key and still sound great since Getty Lee mostly talks his vocals anyway.

My top choice is King Crimson but they better really practice, it would be sacreligous to mess up that album.

Ok maybe Hot Rats is my top choice.

mark my words, it will be, & i quote:

KISS - Alive II

from the hints they gave, it will be..
the last record “Alive”

now, who will be “the demon”? i vote page for “the starchild”.

can u imagine, the boys in full KISS getup, fire, lights, blood , oh my!!

peep the trackisting for “Alive II” its too perfect.
i call opening of purple rain, then explosions, and “Detroit Rock City” Phish style…...........now, wheres my balloon…

@SoCal Phan: I mistakenly listed Pixies when I did the last update. They are still alive. Sorry for any confusion.

@Erick Anderson: Saturday Night Fever is on the possibilities list under BeeGees.

The Band suits Phish so well. It wouldn’t be a boring set and wouldn’t be too taxing on vocals like alot of the others. Also, if the country horns are there it would accompany this set very well. See you all there.

Does anyone notice that the Saturday Night Fever is missing from both lists? on today’s update?

Pavement is out…but I still see the Pixies album alive…anyone else?

Pavement - Dead

Thinking its going to be Purple Rain.  Which would be cool.  But kinda hoping for Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

How is nobody mentioning tom waits, I got goosebumps just thinking about it.  I read an interview with trey where he mentions wanting to play the basement tapes for halloween in 2003. and metallica??? that would be intense.

Of the albums listed – it’s interesting to see which artists had multiple entries.

David Bowie – 3 entries (Ziggy Stardust is still my 1st guess)

Led Zeppelin – 2 entries

Jimi Hendrix – 2 entries (Both albums highly likely)

Zappa – 2 entries

Bob Dylan – 2 entries

Neil Young – 2 entries

Pink Floyd – 2 entries

Rolling Stones – (I think both of these albums are good possibilities)

Thriller all the way…

My first gut instinct when they announced the show was Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Listen to “Grey Seal”  It sounds like it was made to be covered by Phish.  That last jam at the end will be just like “Drowned” from Quadrophenia.

But personally I’d rather hear Freedom of Choice.  My head would explode if they did “Gates of Steel”

I hope it’s not pavement, but, trey loves this band and has said that he wants to cover a 90’s band. They are from California and they have a comeback tour scheduled for 2010.  I am pulling for thriller and rio but VH and yellow brick road would be nice too.  If I had to bet Ziggy Stardust.

Forget Zeppelin, how does Graceland not make it?????
