Introduction: The Phish Halloween Album Teaser (September 28th, 2009)

Today the Festival 8 site on Phish.com was updated with yet another teaser animation, only this time instead of teags sayg the location, they're teasing the Halloween cover album.

The new site features a haunted gallery of 99 albums, each a possibility for the musical costume, and each a possible victim of an unfortunate demise.

A handful of albums have already been killed off, and there should be a lot more killing over the next few weeks as the welcome card promises Phish will “play the last record left alive.”

Gotta admit I was pleased to see both of my top choices — Appetite for Destruction and Exile on Main Street — made the list. Figure Appetite is a long-shot but Exile could have a chance.

Place card for Phish Halloween album teaser

Though I doubt this will be quite as uproar-inducing as the Halloween map, it's sure to keep the Festival 8 buzz going strong. Plus it'll also give you a chance to study up on the remaining possibilities (rumor has it there will be 8 albums left when the fest begins) and get familiar with the material, whatever it may be.

WARNING: Spoilers & speculation below. Proceed at your own risk.

Update: The Grateful Living (September 29th @ 12:11 am)

I'm sure this means nothing, but one eagle-eyed fan has noticed that the Grateful Dead are listed as the “Grateful Living” in the xml config file that's driving the gallery. Hmmm… certainly wouldn't mind if American Beauty is “the last record left alive.”

Update: The Grateful Living Part 2 (September 29th @ 2:41 am)

There's a comment below about the Grateful Dead thing pointing out that the word “living” is used in the xml file to denote albums that are still in the mix. I realized that, but in this case it's not just the <stateofbeing> node that says living, but the <title> node as well.

That said, the reader's comment opened my mind up to a much more likely theory. Someone did a search and replace on that xml file, replacing all occurrences of “dead” with “living” — only they didn't select match case — and so the “Grateful Dead” became the “Grateful living.” Note also the lowercase “l” which I incorrectly noted as an uppercase “L” above.

So in effect, I'm still sure it means nothing… other than that speculating on Phish teaser animations is a great way to waste time.

Update: The Grateful Living Part 3 (September 29th @ 1:36 pm)

The Grateful Dead are now listed correctly in the .xml file. Case closed.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 10:36 pm)

Born to Run Languedoc

Strange things are afoot in the haunted gallery, as a number of album covers have started to get a Phish-themed makeover.

  • Phish are in the sardine can on Hello Nasty
  • The hot dog vendor on Pretzel Logic is sporting a viking hat
  • The Boss is playing a Languedoc
  • Trey and Page are moving a keyboard on Moving Pictures
  • T-Rex is now T-rey
  • Tom Petty is wearing a Phish shirt
  • Mike Gordon has joined the Ramones (added 10/7)
  • Rage Against the Machine is now Page Against the Machine (added 10/9)
  • Fishman is on the cover of Exile on Main Street (added 10/10)
  • Ghost in the Machine is now Story of the Ghost in the Machine (added 10/15)
  • AC/DC Back in Black is now AC/DC Bag (added 10/15)
  • Page is in the rearview mirror on the Minutemen album (added 10/16)
  • Fishman's head has been added to one of the Electric Ladyland ladies (added 10/16)

Just as it was starting to feel really repetitive, this is a great twist to keep things interesting.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 11:36 pm)

Original Blind Faith album cover

A commenter below just inquired if anyone noticed that a “new album” had been added to the gallery

Well it's a new album cover, but not a new album. That's the original cover image from Blind Faith's self-titled debut. Rumor has it the naked young girl is Ginger Baker's daughter, but whoever it is she didn't make the cut. The cover was banned in the USA where it was sold with the “bland, but shopper-friendly, band photo.”

Update: Album YouTube Links (October 7th @ 3:23 pm)

Well this is interesting. Some of the albums in the xml config file have been updated to include YouTube links.

I'll give you one guess how many albums got the special treatment…

  1. AC/DC, Hells Bells from Back in Black
  2. Aerosmith, Sweet Emotion from Toys In The Attic (by Gordon/Kottke)
  3. Arcade Fire, Wake Up from Funeral
  4. David Bowie, Oh You Pretty Things from Hunky Dory
  5. David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust from Five Years Live
  6. Led Zeppelin, Going to California from Zeppelin IV
  7. The Band, Up On Cripple Creek from The Band
  8. Clash, Clampdown from London Calling

I sure hope these aren't the finalist because they seem to have forgotten GNR :)

Update: Festival 8 Numerology (October 7th @ 7:17 pm)

Just came across some interesting numerology observations from PTer Sixtwenty294.

8 ball
  • Moving Pictures is Rush's 8th album
  • Escape is Journey's 8th album
  • Kiss Alive II is Kiss's 8th album
  • Tonight's the Night is Neil Young's 8th album
  • Goodbye yellow brick road is Elton John's 8th album (including a live album)
  • Hot Rats is Frank Zappa's 8th album (including comilations) Thx Jeff G.

Plus, they changed 8 album covers — Blind Faith, T.Rex, Springsteen, Beastie Boys, Ramones, Steely Dan, Rush, and Tom Petty. And as noted above, 8 albums have videos.

That's a whole lot of eights. Nice work Sixtwenty294.

Update: Albums with 8 Songs (October 8th @ 12:11 am)

Got some more 8's thanks to a comment from Bryan Lasky — the albums with 8 songs

  • Boston | Boston
  • Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
  • Black Sabbath | Paranoid
  • Metallica | Master Of Puppets
  • Led Zeppelin | IV (Zoso)
  • Pixies | Come On Pilgrim
  • Van Morrison | Astral Weeks
  • Television | Marquee Moon
  • Leonard Cohen | I'm Your Man (eliminated)
  •

Update: YouTube Links Part 2 & 8 Letter Names (October 8th @ 4:55 pm)

A few things to note here.

First, the mis-linked Arcade Fire and Clash videos from yesterday were updated in the xml. Plus, a bunch of additional video links were added some time today. These include…

  1. Frank Zappa, Cosmik Debris from Apostrophe
  2. Led Zeppelin, Misty Mountain Hop from Zeppelin IV
  3. Metallica, Master of Puppets from Master of Puppets
  4. Minutemen, Jesus And Tequila from Double Nickels On The Dime
  5. Nirvana, Lithium from Nevermind
  6. Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb from The Wall
  7. Radiohead, Everything In Its Right Place from Kid A
  8. Rush, YYZ from Moving Pictures
  9. Violent Femmes, Blister In The Sun from Violent Femmes
  10. Yes, I've Seen All Good People from The Yes Album

Next, if you've been enjoying the numbers game and were miffed that there were 10 new videos and not 8, there's a comment from Lorenzo below that I think you'll like — it's the artists on the list with 8 letter names

  • Bob Dylan
  • Bob Seger
  • Brian Eno
  • Firehose
  • Pavement

Update: Electric Ladyland Album Cover (October 8th @ 8:13 pm)

Official Electric Ladyland album cover
Original Electric Ladyland album cover
Linda Eastman Hendrix Experience Alice in Wonderland

Here's an update for the dudes in the front row, and this one actually is riveting.

The official Electric Landyland album cover (left) has been replaced with the original UK cover (center) featuring a harem of late sixties babes. Once again, banned in the USA and elsewhere.

Notably, Hendrix didn't want this cover or the blurry red and yellow mugshot. Instead he'd requested they use a Linda Eastman photo (right) of the Experience sitting with some kids on the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park. Given a vote, I'd have chosen the babes.

Update: Links to Album Streams (October 9th @ 12:52 pm)

For your listening pleasure, I've stated linking up some of the albums below to free, legal streams on Grooveshark. Unfortunately most of their playlists are incomplete or have tons of duplicates, so you basically need to create each one by hand which is time consuming.

That said, if anyone's feeling ambitious and wants to take on an album or two it'd be greatly appreciated. Just shoot me an email or post a comment with the playlist link.

Update: Fall Tour Dates Announced (October 9th @ 10:32 am)

Nothing to do with albums or 8's, but Fall Tour Dates have been announced.

Update: Video Links Part 3 (October 9th @ 1:30 pm)

Got another handful of additional video links that were added some time today. These include…

  1. Blind Faith, Can't Find My Way Home from Blind Faith
  2. Genesis, In the Cage from Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  3. Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced from Are You Experienced
  4. King Crimson, Talking Drum from Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. Van Morrison, Cyprus Avenue from Astral Weeks

Update: Albums with Horns (October 13th @ 12:31 am)

The rumor mill is rapidly churning with the notion that there will be horns at Festival 8, presumably for the musical costume. Here's a list of albums you might be hearing if that rumor pans out…

  • Curtis Mayfield | Superfly Soundtrack
  • Chicago | The Chicago Transit Authority
  • David Bowie | Ziggy Stardust
  • Frank Zappa | Apostrophe
  • Frank Zappa | Hot Rats
  • Michael Jackson | Thiller
  • Miles Davis | A Tribute To Jack Johnson
  • Pink Floyd | The Wall
  • Radiohead | Kid A
  • Steely Dan | Pretzel Logic
  • T.Rex | Electric Warrior

  • The Band | The Band (aka Brown Album)
  • The Clash | London Calling
  • The Police | Ghost in the Machine

Meanwhile, I'm generally averse to Hitler but the video above cracks me up every time so I'm just embedding to avoid having to go to YouTube — and for the 3 people who still haven't seen it.

Update: Mike's Hotline Hint & more (October 13th @ 11:15 pm)

A few things to report, aside from the fact that CCR, ZZ Top, and the Ramones were killed off today.

First, Mike's hotline is offering a very Gordonesque “hint” at the Halloween album — singing a line from the chorus of the Go-Gos Out Lips Are Sealed. Personally I prefer the Hilary / Haley Duff version. Hear Mike for yourself at 212-330-9092.

Added 10/14 @ 5:45 pm Lots of message board chatter that lips could be a thinly veiled Stones reference.

Added 10/19 @ 8:23 pm “Our lips are sealed” is a lyric in the song Elevation by Television. Coincidence?

Second, I've started a gallery of Festival 8 posters that's already got great art by folks like AJ Masthay, Jamie Huntsman, and Not Pollock.

Finally, I'm doing a Series II Page bobblehead giveaway. This one features Page as The Chairman of the Boards, my favorite of all the bobbles so far.

Update: Phish Festivalography on Sirius (October 14th @ 12:10 am)

Not sure if I'm late to the game on this but I just got wind of a cool sounding show on Sirius called “Phish Festivalography.” It's a four part series starting Thursday the 15th at 9:00 pm Eastern (with replay at 2 am).

Hosted by Jonathan Schwartz from “Gone Phishin',” the exclusive series will cover Phish's festival history in words and music. Sounds promising.

Update: Miner's Case for Ziggy Stardust (October 14th @ 3:00 pm)

Spiders from Mars Fleece

Mr. Miner over at Phish thoughts has made the case for Ziggy Stardust:

For the elaborate theatrics and space-aged costumes alone, Ziggy Stardust would make a superb spectacle for the Halloween set. But beyond the glamorous show this album could provide, the music and lyrics of Bowie’s record fit perfectly with Phish’s place in time.

Read Miner's full post for more.

In other news, Zeppelin IV was just eliminated! Kinda figured that one would stick around for a while but alas, it's gone.

Update: The Album Elimination Set (October 14th @ 5:15 pm)

Got what I think might be a fun concept that revolves around the premise / rumor that there will be 8 albums left at Festival time.

Imagine you have just woken up from a dream. In that dream you were at Festival 8 and the band threw a major curve-ball 2nd set Friday, eliminating albums by playing 6 covers plus a cover encore — one from each of the 7 albums NOT being played.

So for example, in my dream it might look something like this:

  1. Detroit Rock City (Kiss)
  2. Communication Breakdown (Zeppelin)
  3. Poem 58 (Chicago)
  4. Counting Out Time (Genesis)
  5. Every Little Thing She Does (Police)
  6. Rip this Joint (Stones)
  7. Encore: Paradise City (GNR)

Stream a compilation of this fake set

Notably, I mixed and matched what I'd want them to play with what I think they'd play, which I think makes a huge difference, and is probably how a real dream would unfold.

Also note that I believe it's highly unlikely that they'll eliminate the final albums this way*, but given this concept, what would they play in your dream? Post a comment below once you've given it some thought.

* My insane hypothesis here, in case you were wondering, is that they will have a real life version of the haunted gallery. This will be designed by the guy who did the installations at Hampton and Bonnaroo. Throughout the first two days of the fest actors will come in and kill these larger than life covers with real chainsaws, hatchets, spurting blood, etc. The final 3 or so will be killed on stage in a theatrical experience immediately preceding the costume set Saturday.

Update: The Dead are Dead (October 14th @ 8:50 pm)

Crying Dancing Bear

Oh man, you step away for a few hours and they go and kill off the good ol' Grateful Dead. I didn't think for a second they were going to play this, but I wouldn't have complained. For those who were hoping for this one, the only solace I have to offer is this: Terrapin from Virginia Beach '98. Enjoy.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Bands with 4 Members (October 15th @ 12:40 am)

Here's an interesting observation from Greg below: all the bands phish has covered have been 4 members (at one point or another). If that trend continues, here's who you might hear:

  • Black Sabbath
  • Blind Faith
  • Boston (technically)
  • Genesis (v1.0)
  • Kiss
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Metalica
  • Modern Lovers
  • Pink Floyd
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Television
  • The Clash
  • The Doors
  • The Pixies
  • U2
  • Van Halen
  • Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Greg goes on to jokingly note, “That's 16 bands left. 2 weeks left. 16 divided by 2 is 8!!!!!” Fascinating. Just added the Clash and there are now 17 bands in the list rendering Greg's joke humorless.

Update: Handicapping the Albums (October 16th @ 9:40 am)

I don't think anyone's actually keeping books, but Eric Wyman and Matt Dubno have been handicapping the remaining albums. Here are a few of their picks:

  • Sticky Fingers | Matt @ 20:1, Eric @ 3:2
  • Exile on Main Street | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 12:1
  • Moving Pictures | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 25:1
  • Hot Rats | Matt @ 12:1, Eric @ 75:1
  • Electric Ladyland | Matt @ 8:1, Eric @ 3:1

See more handicapping action at 99 Halloweens.

Update: The Campground Albums (October 16th @ 11:50 am)

So this latest rumor has been circulating a bit but the din finally got loud enough that I've decided to post it. People are now saying that there will be 8 campgrounds at Festival 8, one for each of the finalist albums. Here's the rumored list…

  1. David Bowie | Hunky Dory
  2. Genesis | The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway | SBD
  3. Jimi Hendrix | Electric Ladyland
  4. King Crimson | Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. MGMT | Oracular Spectacular
  6. Prince | Purple Rain
  7. Radiohead | Kid A
  8. Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street

I'd take it for what it is, a rumor, but that list pretty well thought out. As I'm sure is the case for most folks, there's a few of my favorites (Stones, Jimi, Genesis), a few I'm not so big on (Radiohead, MGMT), a few I could go either way on (Bowie, Prince), and one I've yet to hear (King Crimson).

Crowd favorite Ziggy Stardust is noticeably absent, leading some to speculate that they'll play a non-campground album. But I'm not so sure as that would mean they'd be playing an album that was previously eliminated, a concept that didn't go over so well with California on the teaser map.

Finally, I saw a great suggestion on another board — the band could go around the campsites late-night and serenade each with a performance of a few tunes from their respective albums. That's probably about the only thing that would make me question my hotel decision, but time will tell.

Update: Much on the Horizon at 8 (October 16th @ 4:40 pm)

Update: The Killer Album Theory (October 16th @ 6:20 pm)

Okay. Here's a theory (not mine) that's either totally obvious or totally out-there, or perhaps a little bit of both.

Let it Bleed Album Cover

The obvious part of the theory (or at least already been discussed here and there) is that the Halloween album is not actually on the list.

The out-there part is that the 100th album is actually the murderer — the one doing all the killing — and that album would be, pun intended, Let it Bleed… the Stones 8th album.

Look forward to your comments on this one.

Hat tip to Cassidy B. for the theory.

Update: Ryan Kerrigan's 8 Balls, David Welker Scratchboard (October 17th @ 5:49 pm)

Ryan Kerrigan Festival 8 Ball

Just added some great stuff to the Festival 8 poster gallery including a set of hand-painted 8 balls by Ryan Kerrigan and an incredible scratchboard piece by David Welker (who also did the Rift cover).

If this is any indication of the type of stuff people will be slinging at the Festival, I might just need an extra suitcase.

Nice work gents.

Update: Pictures at an Exhibition (October 18th @ 11:16 am)

A few followup thoughts to the 100th album theory have emerged in the comment thread below, including one comment from ben who suggests Alice Cooper's 1971 album Killer as the 100th album, noting also that Alice is playing in town on the 30th.

ELP Pictures at an Exhibition

Second, and perhaps more intriguing, is this comment from stealingtime about ELP's 1971 album Pictures at an Exhibition

I doubt they'd play this, as the album has hardly any guitar (listen here) but man does that album cover bear striking resemblance to the Phish gallery or what?

Update: Vendor Map of Festival Grounds (October 19th @ 5:30 pm)

Update removed. Sorry.

Update: Upper Playground / Sonic Living “Day 1” (October 19th @ 10:15 pm)

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8
Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Came across this link on PhishPosters.com tonight. I'm not familiar with either Upper Playground or Sonic Living, both of whom have logos on these, but someone on PhishPosters is guessing that these are Festival 8 laminate designs.

These aren't quite as cool as past laminates if that's the case, though there's plenty of cool stuff in the UP news feed like this brilliant photo gallery of an urban narcolepsy epidemic.

Update: 10:38 pm Interesting. There's a poster gallery on the Sonic Living site that includes these images, sans text. The guitar gun is by Jeremy Fish, the cityscape by Marco Zamora, and the bike by Sam Flores.

Despite the update, I'm still not sure what the examples above are supposed to be . Post a comment if you have any ideas.

Update: Seeking photos from Phish fans (October 21st  @ 1:18 pm)

Local Indio paper The Desert Sun is looking for great photos from past Phish festivals. See here for details and an email address to send pics.

Update: Festival 8 to be Filmed in 3D (October 21st  @ 2:04 pm)

3D glasses

I heard this rumor from a pretty reliable source last week, but this recent PT post seems to confirm it: Festival 8 will be filmed in 3D! Pretty sure that doesn't mean a simulcast, but it could mean a sweet ass IMAX film down the road along the lines of U2 3D or my other favorite band, the Jonas Brothers.

Update: Burble & Borealis (October 22nd @ 5:22 pm)

Here are two of the amazing interactive sculptures that might be melting your face at Festival 8…

Burble

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A spectacular, futuristic sculpture of helium-filled balloons packed with LEDs and infrared sensors that floats above spectators in response to infra-red signals and its immediate environment.

Borealis

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A mirage-like installation that glows with colours and ebullient patterns created in response to the competing and collaborative voices, music and screams of people nearby.

Update: Behold the Plasma Cutter (October 23rd @ 5:00 pm)

Here's some more neat stuff the likes of which you just might see at Festival 8. It's two amazing metal sculptures from the portfolio of San Francisco based Dan Das Mann. As you can see, he's not only a genius with the plasma cutter, but also knows a thing or two about melting faces.

Update: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings @ F8? (October 24th @ 10:30 pm)

Here's a rumor that, if true, has been of the better kept secrets of this whole affair.

As posted in this comment, word is Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will join Phish for the musical costume at Festival 8.

The video at right should give you a good idea of Ms. Jones's superb vocals and the Dap-Kings funk / soul musical stylings.

No complaints from this guy if this is legit, which I believe it be. Especially if it means an Exile on Main Street (or Let it Bleed) costume.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Colossal Testaments in Steel and Stone (October 25th @ 3:00 pm)

Here's a trio of large-scale sculptures from Rosanna Scimeca, another artist you might be seeing at 8. According to her site, Rosanna likes to “explore how the observer may interface, interact, and identify with her installations.” Yeah, I can give her a preview: they're going bug out.

Update: Pollock Halloween Mask + HeadCount Trivia Contest (October 26th @ 1:45 pm)

Today Jambands.com posted information about a Pollock Halloween mask to be available at the WaterWheel table gallery throughout Festival 8. Plus, HeadCount will be running a trivia contest and the grand prize winner will get an uncut sheet of masks with a  one-of-kind Pollock doodle.

Sample trivia question: “What town does Trey Anastasio, John Popper of Blues Traveler and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors all hale from?”

Pollock Festival 8 Teaser

There's also the recently surfaced image at right, which I believe to be a teaser for a Pollock Festival 8 poster, though I'm not 100% on that.

Poster or not, can't wait to see the mask! In the mean time, here's a growing Festival 8 poster gallery.

Update: Stage Photo & Viewing Platform Sketch (October 26th @ 6:45 pm)

Today Twitter user @BathtubGym posted what I believe to be the first pic of the stage setup, as well as a sketch of the viewing platform for the Dan Das Mann installation.

I'm sure I'll say this ten times over the next 2 days, but I can't believe I just got MORE excited.

Update: Festival 8 to be Simulcast Live on Sirus (October 26th @ 9:54 pm)

This just in: all 8 sets of Festival 8 including the musical costume and acoustic set will be simulcast live on JamOn, channel 17 on SIRIUS!!!

Not a subscriber? Good news… you can sign up for a free trial and hear the simulcast without spending a dime. Huge thanks to whoever is responsible for arranging this. Jam On!

Update: They Have Created Fire (October 27th @ 1:56 am)

If you're anything like me, you're somehow riveted by fire — and you'll definitely be making it a point to see this six-pack fire artists rumored to be appearing at Festival 8:

Update: Glitches, XML fun, & Gordon's Hotline (October 28th @ 1:18 pm)

The Wall

Looks like there was some sort of glitch in the album teaser on Phish.com for a bit when Apostrophe was killed — as the gallery was only showing living albums, and the Wall and Exile had gone missing. All seems back to normal now, though the Wall is indeed dead as seen at right.

Also appears that someone's having some fun with the xml file — with Michael Jackson changing to “Michael Jackson Is Alive“ and Yes changing to “Yes Yes Yes Yes.“ — but I'm not reading into either of those too much.

Speaking of having fun, Gordon's hotline (212-330-9092) has had two recent updates, the latest playing off the 100th album theories that are floating around.

And last but not least, I just checked into my flight for tomorrow. If anyone's on Southwest from Chicago at 12:35, hit me up for a free drink coupon. I'll be the dork carrying the poster tube.

Update: Jamtopia Meetup | Friday. Setbreak. Picnic Area. (October 28th @ 4:18 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

Okay, let's make this thing official.

After extensive reviews of the map and comments, I believe the best time and place to meet is setbreak on Friday at the picnic area. It's at the back of the concert field Page side.

That way if people want to hit the Honey Bucket or grab food or drinks or whatever it's all convenient.

Update: Get a FREE scoop of Ben & Jerry's (October 28th @ 5:24 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

I just got an email from Ben & Jerry's with some great news.

In addition to being huge fans of Jamtopia, Vermont's finest ice cream purveyors will be offering free scoops of Phish Food at Festival 8.

All you have to do is “particip8” in a social action with one of the charities at the WaterWheel booth (e.g. sign a petition, make a donation) to get your free delights.

Sweet.

Update: More Stage Photos (October 28th @ 6:25 pm)

Got some more stage pics, this time from Twitter user @briankarol:

I'm thinking they need more speakers!

Update: Festival 8 Wristband (October 29th @ 12:11 am)

Festival 8 wristband

I'm not sure if this is a staff wristband or just the standard issue, but either way it looks pretty sweet sauce. If the production values of this wristband are any indication this is really going to be one hell of a shindig.

Meanwhile, as I write this, Van Morrison and Zeppelin were killed off. Only 9 remain. Can't get there soon enough.

Update: Festival 8 Shout-out on Conan (October 29th @ 8:08 am)

Well this is surreal. Masterfully bearded Phish fan Rob Howard was in the Late Night crowd yesterday and got interviewed by Conan to “promote Phish.”

As you'll see when you watch the video, Conan had a little something extra planned to help get the word out about Festival 8.

Props to Rob for representing Phish — and the great state of Illinois :)

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Finally on My Way (October 29th @ 10:00 am)

Well I'm just about to take off for the airport. This has been an amazing 30+ days tracking the album teaser and I'm almost sad to see it end. Thank you all for your awesome participation: coming up with crazy numerology, alerting me to updates, and just waxing philosophical in the comments.

As soon as I land I'll start up a new post with updates and recaps from the Festival. Hope to keep the great comments going there, so I'll be having a giveaway — a little something that's sure to light up any room. I think you'll like it.

Update 7pm: New Festival 8 Recap post is live.

Update: Phish to Play Exile on Main Street (October 31th @ 3:00 pm)

The Phishbill is out and it's been confirmed, Phish will be dressing up as the Rolling Stones and covering Exile on Main Street tonight.

More coverage on the way at the Festival 8 Recap post. Hope to see you there.

@Ryan from prescott az

In past bluegrass sets, Mike has played banjo, and Page plays the upright.

@Todd

Thanks for the Festivalography pt 3 link!

I’m still looking for pt. 2 & 4, if anyone has a link.

- Markah

You all might want to start learning these songs, here’s the 1st (actually 2nd on the album since Larks I is instrumental). Also note the title of the track.

Book Of Saturday
If I only could deceive you
Forgetting the game
Every time I try to leave you
You laugh just the same

‘Cause my wheels never touch the road
And the jumble of lies we told
Just returns to my back to weigh me down…

We lay cards upon the table
The backs of our hands
And I swear I like your people
The boys in the band

Reminiscences gone astray
Coming back to enjoy the fray
In a tangle of night and daylight sounds…

All completeness in the morning
Asleep on your side
I’ll be waking up the crewmen
Banana-boat ride

She responds like a limousine
Brought alive on the silent screen
To the shuddering breath of yesterday…

There’s the succour of the needy
Incredible scenes
I’ll believe you in the future
Your life and death dreams

As the cavalry of despair
Takes a stand in the lady’s hair
For the favour of making sweet sixteen…

You make my life and times
A book of bluesy Saturdays
And I have to chose…

Yup…that message on Gordon’s hotline, definitely makes me think the “trick” is in play.  100th album it is!

So much for my earlier post about Trey mentioning “lark”; this has more legs.

Possible 100th Album:

Overnite Sensation-Zappa
Axis Bold as Love – Hendrix
Graceland –Paul Simon
Low Spark of High Heeled Boys –Traffic
Burgers-Hot Tuna
Cosmos Factory- CCR
Waiting for Columbus – Little Feat
In the Right Place – Dr John
Band on the Run – Wings
Leon and the Shelter People- Leon Russell
Innervisions- Stevie Wonder

Are We Not Men- Devo
Truth and Soul- Fishbone
Get Your Wings- Aerosmith

The last 3 are my personal long shots.enjoy everybody in Indio,I will be listening on Sirius.

Thanks for the site, it has really heightened my excitement (if that is even possible)!

I have to agree with Mike’s nose on this one.  I think it will be the Yes album if it is one off of the list.  I am just glad to catch another Halloween show.  I saw the Talking Heads show and it blew my mind!  I am sure this will do the same no matter what they play.

Unfortunately, I can’t find any of my old Maiden shirts (it was the early 90’s since I wore one, even had an Eddie pillow case) but I hope some people do wear them on Friday.

Have a great festi everyone.  Be clean, kind, and respectful while you get your groove and party on so this can be as epic of a weekend as Big Cypress!

Go Neal Diamond!

Wait, you guys.  This is my first post, but call Mike’s hotline and listen to his new message.  It’s this whole thing about 99 messages or 100 messages, yada yada.

Maaaybe he’s being coy and giving us a not-so-subtle hint that there’s a 100th album, but more likely he’s trying to psyche us out.  Interesting nonetheless…

But yeah, this is the coolest build-up to an event I’ve ever experienced.

Hear Mike for yourself at 212-330-9092.

(God I hope it’s Thriller, but so many awesome possibilities that I could really give a shit)

This may be really stretching it here, but while talking about how the first musical costume came about on the Festivalography 4 special that just aired on Sirius, Trey said that it happened on a “lark”.  Take it for what it’s worth.

@geggles

Thanks, my friend.

@Smokey McBlunt

It may be private property, but it sure didn’t stop the cops from hitting the naked wizard guy with a tazer at this year’s Coachella:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsERNGjaafU

Pretty douchey of the naked guy, but still over the top by the five-oh, if you ask me.

@Royce re: you said that this site was started after a drunken bar bet or conversation (I dont remember which one) and I was curious about the nature of that conversation or bet.  Jut outta curiosity if you feel like sharing.

At friends place before hitting the bar.

Another friend (The Inlaw) pulls up like half a dozen amazing Phish YouTubes in a row on the host’s computer (which is usually playing WSP fwiw).

Each one is better than the next.

A string of special guests (Jay-Z, Kid Rock, Boston Choir, a ton of great CK5 stuff from Island Tour, etc.

So a few hours later we’re at the bar and I tell Inlaw that I’m going to create a blog and all he has to do is post one of these great videos once in a while. He’s into it. Cool.

Go home. Find domain. Register domain. Wait. Install Expression Engine. Reload. Works! Bed.

Two plus years later I’m pretty sure Inlaw’s only worked on two posts (here and here) but I’ve been plugging away at it late-nights on a pretty regular basis.

That’s pretty much the whole story.

@Ethan re: I’m just a 15 year old kid followed by all sorts of intelligently written stuff

Coolest 15 year old I’ve come across (not counting Jeff from McLovins).

trust.

@Scott
They oughtta bring in a flautist and rock some Jethro Tull…...

Now that would be bad ass, why the hell wasnt aqualung on there anyway?

MAYBE,the MGMT album is in disguise ?
Love to hear both Lamb or Larks tongue, but damn those 2 live would be a jobb and a half.Love to hear Easy Money,Book of Saturdays and Larks tongue part 2…but the rest would be a little rough..
Dint know that Zappas wife was so crazed about his music,I hope that doesnt effect their choice.
Zappa and Bowie heading down the final stretch.
Ov

I have been looking at this website just about hourly, Im having trouble sleeping and having dreams about the festival. But I have been listening to the the final 8 albums and here is my take.  1st i think whatever they choose will suffice I mean we have trusted them this far and no letdowns, right? But when I listened to Genesis it was really good, quite a good amount of notes for each member to get their own unique jam, but not sure it gonna be that. Then Electric Ladyland i really did not hear much to any piano, and correct me if im wrong but there were only 3 members in the Hendrix Exp. Then of course Bowie, I mean the story line of 5 years till we use up all natural resources and the band taking a 5 year break good chances, but and don’t get me wrong love that album, but it has not got a real dance feel like something to make people move. Thats why when I listened to Exile on Main St. today I just said this is it, it has just a great vibe coming from it. Makes you feel good and ready to move but what grabbed me was a line in Sweet Virginia:
Thank you for your wine, california
Thank you for your sweet and bitter fruits
Yes, Ive got the desert in my toenail
And hid the speed inside my shoe
Sounds like a winner! But like I said I am good with anything!!!
See Yall There!!!!

@Treece
Check out the link for Handicap accesibility information on the festival 8 website there is an email contact for questions such as yours.

Does anybody have a link to stream Part 3 of Phish Festivalography?

I’ve heard parts 1 and 2, and the journey needs to continue…

P.S. - I’m currently wearing my Max from Where the Wild Things Are cotume - I managed to make one that won’t be too hot. If you see me making a rumpus at 8, feel free to say hello!

I think MJ, Prince, and all the bands left have had some sort of influence on Phish.
For example, MGMT is a recent band that appeals to the growing fan base of young people.  Sorry, i meant younger.  Stress the ger.
I’ve seen a lot of Phish shows, beginning in 91’, and I like all of the albums left, save for MGMT.  IMHO, King Crimson, Apostrophe, and Purple Rain would be first choices.  Really wanted Hot Rats, or Marquee Moon!
Exile would be fine, Jimi and either Bowie too.  Yes, ok.  Wall, good for those who like things other than alcohol and/or burning.
I don’t really want to hear Van, MGMT, or Radiohead.
Anything they play will be really fun, so gear up y’all!
Look for the retro tennis crew at the festival!

There’s a lot of difference between the abums at stake.  I’ll categorize by generalizing ones that will get the crowd in a shakedown groove, compared to others that will leave us motionless in technical detail. I’ll let you decide what does what for yourselves.  While the creepiness of a Halloween themed, say King Crimson, Floyd, or Bowie album might sound, I think I’d be more pleased with an album that will keep me dancing the whole way throughout.  MJ would do it in a different way, one that I’m not too psyched about..  I’m thinking more rock and roll dancing.. Stones, or Zep.

To those concerned about the weed issue, I remind you that Empire Polo Club is private property.

Todd just wanted to say great work. This is the been the best blogging on Fest8 on the web. From the updates your always posting to the great incite by the commenters. Keep up the great work. See you at 8!!!!

Stab in the dark here, but….does anybody else here sleep with a CPAP machine?  If I asked upon entering the campground, I wonder if there’s any way they could situate us in such a way that we could be an extension cord or two’s length away from an outlet.  Any feedback on this?  Hindsight being 20/20, we probably should have booked a hotel room considering this.  In any case, does anyone know of an email address that I could send an inquiry to or something?  I checked out the 8 website but there’s no such indication; rightly so, since they would probably get a million strange requests.  Anyway, thanks for any help in advance.  Now back to our regularly scheduled speculation…

They oughtta bring in a flautist and rock some Jethro Tull.

In fact, I’m gonna make that my new “101st album” theory.  Aqualung sneaks up from behind the murderous 100th album just in time to save Halloween.

Mark it, dude.  Aqualung.

Long time reader of this post and first comment I felt like making, Todd thanks for this blog. Now on to biznass, I doubt that Phish (as good as they are) can pull off Kid A, not the first two songs anyway. But then comes track 3, National Anthem, and I could just see Gordo throwing down that bass, and those horn rumors, oh yeah feel the horns on this one! Long story short my guess if I had to bet money is Thriller, my hope is for Ladyland first and The Wall second, and if those don’t survive, I want MGMT just to piss off all the haters!

Nobody knows what’s going to happen. But that map is totally legit. We have our final 8 albums. It’s going to be a madhouse baby!!!! We leave for a 12 hour drive to bliss tomorrow. Gonna be sleeping by the entrance until it opens.

I’m all for the flash freeze.  Start of the second song, halloween set?

Not really feelin’ the Crimson vibe so much.

@ben from STL

Thanks for the link to the free soundcheck download. “Party at the lamp post….Couscous…coconut juice….FIIIYYYAAAA!!!”  No wonder that show was so damn good; they were in rare form!  Good times.

@J from SoCal

Good point about trying to stay healthy.  My wife had a serious bout of the flu after Cypress as well.

I vote for a Jamtopia meeting session in either the campgrounds or after setbreak friday but campgrounds might work better with plent of time to chill, set break infront of the soundboards is a simple meeting place who cares… if there is a meeting place post it, post it, post it! Either way hell yes 3 more days people… A round of FOAM to everyone and safe travels ..... We want the PHISH, gotta have that PHISH

Gonna be Larks Tounges in Aspic….book it.  Woohoo!  Love me some King Crimson.  Enjoy!

Bout to leave tonight for a 3 hour car ride @ 2AM for Milwookie… Gettin to LA by 11 East coast, cant wait to see you all there….

@Tony from Chi.

Ive been hearing more and more about the Freeze lately…I’m definitely down to try for it…..  flash freeze during the start of the second song of Halloween set would be Insane.. lets do it!!!

Weird feeling about Van….

NOOOO! Tom Verlaine is so mad!!

Thanks so much for this great blog!

I really REALLY think this needs to be posted:

CANT WAIT!!!!!

does anyone know if mike can play upright bass for the acoustic set? i saw chris wood this summer and his mastery of the instrument blew my mind. hopefully mike can and will be playing stand-up come sunday morning

People, (love the site todd), but people have you listened to exile on main st it is a total party. horns fast pace fist pumping good time for the most part.  I dont give a shit what they play but well Exile has my vote.  All greal Lp’s left though.  Peace and see you thursday!

its it just me or is Van Morrison one of the weirdest ones to last this long. Seems like it shoulda been gone long ago. I dunno the classic rock albums(Jimi,Stones,Floyd) seem to obvious and Bowie seems like something they would have done a couple years ago. This may be the Year of the progressive rock album. I mean play something thats hard to play and says were takin it to the next level. King Crimson!

Or they dont give a shit about any of that and will do Purple Rain because it will bring the most energy.

@Ethan

Me too! I’m just a 15 year old kid, who can’t go to the Fest :(
But when I first saw the Festival 8 map, I immediately thought, “Ziggy would be amazing!”

At this point though, most of these albums would be spectacular! The Yes Album is one of the most delicious masterpieces you’ll ever hear. GREAT use of creative time signatures (Starship Trooper: 9/8, 9/4, 7/4… Perpetual change with guitar playing 7/4 and keyboards playing alternating 6/4 and 8/4, etc.), amazing a cappella harmonies (I’ve Seen All Good People/Your Move), ridiculously incredible parts for everybody:

For example, in “Yours Is No Disgrace,” Howe plays a lovely, fast arpeggio-filled riff over a major progression, Squire breaks into a jazzy, upright bass sound with beautiful harmonies overlaying it, etc.
All of the keyboard/organ/piano parts on the album are very complex and brilliantly written, and the drum parts fit Fish’s unorthodox and creative style like a glove.

I think it’d be fun to hear, but any of them would be absolutely FABULOUS! I probably wouldn’t exactly gravitate toward Oracular Spectacular or Kid A, just because I’m not very fond of those albums, but Phish could pull it off. Definitely wouldn’t be my first choices though.

I was a bit surprised to see Television eliminated today, but I didn’t have my hopes up on that one anyway… Great album, though.

Well, guys, have a great time at the festival. Saw them twice at the Gorge this year, and they changed my life. I’ve been listening to them since I was around nine, and nothing has been the same since… Seeing them was heavenly!

Happy Festival and Fall Tour wishes everybody :)

@Keith

Call your airline and see if you can get on an earlier flight.  They are waiving fees for late changes due to the storm.  I have two friends coming in from Chicago for the drive and they just changed from getting in at 5 pm to 10:30 am without having to pay any extras.

Leave the weed at home friends - Indio cops are going to bust you (I also hope this helps to stop the lame cannabis club posts going around).

http://www.nbclosangeles.com/around-town/events/Leave-the-Weed-at-Home-Phish-Fans-66465287.html

Apostrophe.  They seem back on their game, back to their roots, practicing, playing precise, etc.  That’s why this makes sense.  The other albums are much less “phish” than Apostrophe. My two cents, at least.

Lots of “fire” references in Electric Ladyland, would go well with the “fire theme” at Festival 8.

OK, maybe my previous post was too long for people to read it. Go here: http://festival8news.phish.com/ . Notice the “starman waiting in the sky”. How can it not be Ziggy? It’s been there since day 1. It’s been there since the site was created and before there was the whole 99 album countdown. Also, the 8 could clearly be a spider (from mars). It’s totally Phish’s style to leave the biggest clues of all right under our nose the whole time (like “Save The Date” alluding to the Date Farm in Indio).

I feel like I’m the only one pointing this out…

Awwwww poor taste to kill Bruce the day after his cousin died.  NOT.

I am a bit bummed that Television is gone, that would have been fun.

I suppose I am pulling for Kid A or Yes at this point.  After Iron Maiden of course.

throw away all your preconceived notions for this gig, it is going to be MGMT… and I will love every minute of it!

@chillable - I’m with you on this.

I’m saying that because the band is not going to spend months rehearsing an album that will be forgotten in a few years.  They will choose something with staying power (like all of their costumes in the past).

Notice that they still play stuff of Loaded but not Darkside… I could be wrong and haven’t checked the stats but I can’t recall a single song of Darkside ever played again…. that could be because it needs the continuity of the album.

Go Zig!

And he was alright, the band was all together
Yes he was alright, the song went on forever

I only see seven albums on the map.  Where’s MGMT?

So much for Bowie.  That’s pretty freaky…

as well as uncle remus

Still wondering if anyone’s heard news about a possible warmup gig in L.A. sometime this week?

dont look now but cosmik debris has sharon jones and dap kings written all over it

first I have to say that this site rocks.  It is a great way for me to daydream at work and not pay attention.

I love the link to groove shark which is letting me keep up with albums to listen to at work and hope to hear.

I like the idea of a jamtopia meet up.  A couple of people posted about this earlier.  I would be up for it.

Finally I have been checking a lot of message boards and I was wondering if anyone else hear about the flash frees on the 2nd song of the Halloween set?  http://phish.net/discuss/?thread=1256505550
The Festival 8 Phreeze will include everyone standing completely still in whatever position you end up in at the beginning of the second song.

Flash mob / Flash freeze has to be at least 2 minutes long to be effective in a cochella environment.

Marquee dead. guess were going mainstream

Ziggys gonna die today. Hunky Dory is way better anyway.

@Back from the Fripp
Dude I sure hope your right, Larks Tongues is an epic masterpiece and all the weird percussion is why I thought they would not play it, but wow, Im opening my mind to that idea, what parts do you think Sharon Jones would sing?

Anyone know how late Phish can play?  I’ve never gone to coachella so I really have no idea. Hope they can jam until at least 1 or so. Please let me know what you think.

Greeting fellow Phish lovers!

First of all, huge thanks to Todd for maintaining this board and to all of the contributors for sharing your diverse opinions, theorys, rumors, hopes & dreams, rants & raves, and overwhelming excitement for this weekend’s sure-to-be MONUMENTAL event in Phishstory!

Personally, I am freaking out!!!!! The 3rd night of Festival 8 will be my 100th Phish show - however, this will be my first west coast show and my first Halloween show…..is it Friday yet????

I’ve been reading (lurking) since the beginning, and it has been a lot of fun to watch as the albums get slaughtered one by one - and then read others thoughts on what might happen next and what the end result will be.

No matter what Phish is planning, I can pretty much guarantee that it’s gonna be absolutely mind blowing for those who are open minded. I am surprised by some of the comments that are so passionately against certain albums or artists, and speaking definitively that they absolutely would never play something like Prince or Michael Jackson - and stating that those artists did not inspire Phish. I wholeheartedly disagree! I believe that the band has a multitude of influences and inspirations, coming from all genres of music. If I’ve learned one thing in my 18+ year relationship with this band, it’s to expect the unexpected!

My #1 pick from the beginning has been Purple Rain, and I still stand by that choice. If you listen to this album and think of it in the context of Phish jamming it out (complete with horns and guest female vocalist) it would be absolutely ridiculous! The set opening with Let’s Go Crazy…<church organ> “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life”. Purple Rain would be a PARTY!

I’m also really loving the idea of Off The Wall being the 100th album. This too would be an all-out dance party of epic proportions! I could totally see Got Me Working Day & Night turning into a Crosseyed & Painless type of jam. There are so many great songs on that album, and I personally think it would be a much better choice than Thriller.

Now I understand a lot of you will disagree with me, and that’s fine - but for those of you who are outraged by this, perhaps you shouldn’t get so upset at the thought of the album being one that you don’t currently like or think of as “worthy”, and surrender to the flow - I’m sure the boys won’t let us down, no matter what their choice is.

At this point, I would be happy with any of the remaining 15 choices. If it’s not Purple Rain or Off the Wall, I’d put my money on Hunky Dory or Exile - both of which would be stellar choices IMHO.

I honestly don’t think MGMT, Thriller, The Wall, or Kid A would be very good choices - but I could be wrong and they might blow me away with one of those.

Whatever happens, remember that you’ll have a much better time if you’re open to the idea that anything is possible :)

3 days to go…I can’t wait to boogie down in the California sunshine with y’all!

I’ll be the guy with the crazy vortex of multi-colored lights swirling around me! :D

I said earlier that I wouldn’t be upset if certain albums were played, but as we get closer to the date, and certain albums are still alive, I am getting worried.  I am praying that at some point, either now, or at the festival, they kill King Crimson, Radiohead, Genesis, and MGMT.

No “Born to Run” and no “Marquee Moon” what are you hipsters going to freak out about now. MGMT I guess…

Hahaha, all in good fun tho.

My thoughts? Purple Rain. Why not? They could have SO MUCH FUN with that album. Plus, with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings (if that’s true) I feel that is a perfect album.

I said Ziggy Stardust before the list of 99 even came out, so I’m sticking with it. Apostrophe would be great though.

NEWS FLASH:  PHISH IS NOT GOING TO PLAY MGMT.

I’m not saying that because I don’t like MGMT (I do).

I’m saying that because the band is not going to spend months rehearsing an album that will be forgotten in a few years.  They will choose something with staying power (like all of their costumes in the past).

There you have it.

The Boss is dead and the workers rejoice!!!

Bruce is out - someone got their wish.

Here is a little nugget (We could all use more of those) - We know Prince, MJ, and MGMT were not influences of phish per se, but that doesn’t mean a thing - they could easily play any of those three just to throw the curve ball (Sorry pint, I feel your pain)

Exile would be an obvious choice based on the music style, BUT what about the 8 campground albums - are those 8 that they are not playing or is one of them to be the final choice?

If those 8 are axed, Ziggy is looking pretty strong, and (sorry again pint) Michael Jackson would still be in the running as well.

As is always the case - no freaking idea what it all means, but yes it has made the month go by instead of watching the clock tick.

Born to Run is no more.

So much for that one.

as far as bruce getting eliminated, Kermit the frog says
YYYYEEEEEAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

television was my long shot

Ok, if they aren’t going to kill off anything today i am starting to buy that there will be 15 albums left when the festivities begin. They could kill 2 tomorrow, then kill the 7 campground albums when we arrive and we are left with 8.

I also want to thank Todd for this blog, its been a blast to follow as i wait. And of course thanks to Phish for the list of albums, even if you don’t play any of them i have been reminded how great some of these are.

Wish me luck as i try to fly out of Denver tomorrow night, big snow-storm coming.

I really enjoy reading all of the comments on this post, but I would expect more comments on the excitement for Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings belting out Gimmie Shelter, after all this is what is going down as I reported last week.  Is there going to be a jamtopia meet up?  Should we all plan on meeting in the camping area?

Marquee Moon just got the axe

they are gonna cover “the chronic” by Dr. Dre.

Marquee Moooon DONEzo!!!

Great, grand, wonderful….

television is dead and gone….

Kill your television…Marquee Moon axed…

Television, is gone

whoever it was that said that animal collective doesn’t use guitars and also is similar to mgmt needs to listen to animal collective pre-merriweather. sung tongs is almost all acoustic guitar, voice and strange sound effects. they are a much more creative and original band then mgmt who are not all that bad when you compare them to the rest of the pop music now (lil wayne, Brittney spears, lady gaga… the list of s#!t continues). i dont think phish will play it but it would not be a disaster. i still hope for zappa, but will be happy with anything save bruce.

Television’s out.

no more marquis moon…. woulda been great…

Just curious if anyone else caught this article in the Desert Sun which states that: “the farmers will be providing “additional produce” to make Phish’s Festival 8 a special venue.” I wonder what the “additional produce” will be…

Fresh Fruit on Tap for Phish Festival

Turn off the TUBE! Television is gone, (again not surprising).

I predict that the final NINE albums will include the 7 “campground albums” + MGMT + Ziggy, and that the next death will be one of those last two, leaving eight alive at the beginning of the festival.

I do not think that they will play a 100th ‘killer’ album.  They are already playing with us… I’m checking for updates all the time.

Any guesses for who’s going to go after Television?  My guess is…. the Wall (although I would be sad to see them go)!

Television is dead… not too sad.  Aside from “Marquee Moon” I don’t think the other tunes would have translated to a Phish show.

Kill Your Television!!! Finally a kill today- that took a long time!

And so what if they’re not established.  Phish took forever to be established, and if some other artist like Floyd or Neil Young had given them props while they were young how much would that have helped them?

Ummm, Carlos Santanna?

...and Television is gone!

marquee moon bites it

They just turned off the Television

Well, SHIT!  Television just got turned off!

Marque Moon got the knife

television gets the arrow

Leving tomorrow for vegas get in at around midnight then the 4 hour ride to cali.  If all goes well I will be in line at 10am Im 30 and still camping never to old to camp when you are from the adirondack mountains.  Safe travels to all and we will see you there.  Who cares what they play it is phish people you know if they played new kids on the block it would rock!  dont worry it will be stellar from the time you get there til the time you leave.  Be safe and go yankees!

Here’s an email from a source:

So check this out…I’m not sure if you heard this or not, but it’s no secret that Sharon Jones is going to be singing back up at F8.  Apparently, there is tons of speculation that it’s going to be Exile but the band did that on purpose to mess with people.
Truth is, they ARE having her sing back up, and there are horns playing, but that King Crimson album has an entirely separate rhythmic section and you’ll also be getting 4 percussionists as well as a full strings section to give the live experience the exact same sound as the album.

You can thank me later.  This is going to be insano!

@WorcesterJim

I wouldn’t be surprised if Phish was involved in choosing most of the albums, although I agree that it easily could have been someone running the website who chose some as well.

But - the reason MGMT is on there is because Trey covered “Kids” from Oracular Spectacular during Saratoga soundcheck so they threw it on there to trick everyone into thinking they may actually play it and maybe Trey was “practicing” for Halloween that night.  The chances of all 4 agreeing to play that album is extremely low, but the chances of them putting it up there to trick everyone who heard the soundcheck is extremely high.

3 more days!!!!

Zappazappazappazappazappa

Just heard Television Marquee Moon on (Shitty) 94.9…What a kick ass song…I could def jig to that.

RE: playing Michael Jackson…

I agree..

A)to close to his death

B)if Phish were gonna shell out money to Play someone else’s music (we’re talking an exuberant amount because the band OR their representative doesn’t understand that Phish does it respectfully and it’s an HONOR) i would hope it would be FZ.. or Floyd.. or Zeppelin.
or Jimi..

C)do u read the four names above?!? THATS the kind of music that Inspired PHiSH.. not MJ.. NOT MGMT.. not MBV.. not Radiohead, NOT BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN.. ( I Don’t care what lies Trey told the Bonaroo Press and the masses..) and NOT PRINCE…
open your ears people… sheesh! How long have u been listening to phish?!??

D)so the scary thought is Phish playing one of the artists I just named. and all those @^%@^ are the ones that would want HUGE $$$ and try to Capitalize on Phish covering them. Not that Phish would care, but if they were gonna play, it’d at least be WORTH shelling out the dough.

on another note, you can SPIT from Indio to the Betty Ford Clinic!!
Betty Ford Clinic @ google maps.. it’s located in Rancho Mirage… :P lol!!!! hahahaha!

@Todd Levy

I wanted to join the legions of ravenous fans who want to thank you for putting all of the information about fest8 together like this.  I have been following for weeks and directed many of my friends in this direction for your comprehensive reporting.  Great job and enjoy the FOAM at the fest!  You deserve it.

I do have one question.  In one of your earlier posts, you said that this site was started after a drunken bar bet or conversation (I dont remember which one) and I was curious about the nature of that conversation or bet.  Jut outta curiosity if you feel like sharing.

@ fluffhead
Yeah MGMT don’t play guitars at all…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwXsvwklvfA

Do some research!!!
————————————

click the link phish put up in the albums list and it takes you to them on Dave Letterman showing them playing guitars

To the attendance question…  “Indio city officials” are suggesting 60K.

If true, that’s a good-sized crowd.  Big enough to feel BIG, but not so big that it’s a fucking zoo.  Nice and comfy.

Regarding my earlier comment about the blood splatter on the Minutemen album - it seems to be gone now, back to a normal bloodstain.  It looked like the one that consistently shows up on the Pork Tornado album, which is different than all the other patterns.  Probably just a brief mess up that has since been fixed.  Either that or some kind of convoluted clue that it’s going to be [insert album choice here].

Hooray for the webcast!  That’s great news.

I cannot name the interview precisely but I do remember reading one with Trey where he states they’ve been listening to the MGMT record alot while on the road since March. They do have a high respect for these guy’s music.

And so what if they’re not established.  Phish took forever to be established, and if some other artist like Floyd or Neil Young had given them props while they were young how much would that have helped them? So Phish probably think these guys style is on to something new and different and cool and is given them a huge props and exposing them to their fans.

And I’d bet 2 free donuts on Sunday that Phish had a huge hand in choosing the 100 records that are being shown to us.  This is a big thing for them, exposing people to artists they love, it’s part of their core essence.

Has anyone else noticed that the blood splatter from the axe hitting the Minutemen album is different than all the others?  It seems more… splattery.  Larger.  We’ll see if this trend of increased blood flow continues today…

I feel like there’s come compelling evidence for Ziggy Stardust…

First off, all the stuff on PhishThoughts.com is spot on in my opinion. If anyone hasn’t read that, they should!

With regard to a musical “fit”, I definately think these songs (particularly the first 4) give Phish the oppurtunity to do what they did to the first 3 tracks of “Remain in the Light”. I can see them stretching any of those first tunes out the same way they did the end of “The Great Curve”. This is also an album that would have a horn section (to appease all of you running with the horns being a requirement), but not necesarily dominate the band the way. I’m not sure how Miss Jones would fit into that equation, but then again, that’s still a rumor. Or perhaps she’ll be there to do something other than the halloween set?

Additionally, there is the lyrical connection between Trey and Ziggy that is so elegantly put on the PhishThoughts, comparing Trey to Ziggy, basically a humble member of a humble group brought forth to bring important ideas to a society that so desperately needs it, yet in the process of doing so, becomes utimately undone by his own success.

Then, there’s the whole “five years” opening track thing… Coventry was Phish’s last festival which happened 5 years ago. Now, in the Ziggy context 5 years is actually the amount of time the Earth has left, so maybe it’s not quite as good of a fit as Mr. Minor makes it out to be, but still… to have them singing about “5 years” seems very symbolic.

There’s also a number of visible clues. Ziggy’s band was the Spiders From Marz. The 8 certainly lends itself to spiders (number of legs, shape of the torso). Also if you visit the festival 8 site (the real site, not the halloween gallery), there’s been that floating fishman in a silver suite since the site launched. What better caption for this than “starman waiting in the sky”?

I, for one, thing that this album is the perfect album for Phish to play this year and I really hope it’s the one. I can hear it in my head and it sounds amazing.
