Introduction: The Phish Halloween Album Teaser (September 28th, 2009)

Today the Festival 8 site on Phish.com was updated with yet another teaser animation, only this time instead of teags sayg the location, they're teasing the Halloween cover album.

The new site features a haunted gallery of 99 albums, each a possibility for the musical costume, and each a possible victim of an unfortunate demise.

A handful of albums have already been killed off, and there should be a lot more killing over the next few weeks as the welcome card promises Phish will “play the last record left alive.”

Gotta admit I was pleased to see both of my top choices — Appetite for Destruction and Exile on Main Street — made the list. Figure Appetite is a long-shot but Exile could have a chance.

Place card for Phish Halloween album teaser

Though I doubt this will be quite as uproar-inducing as the Halloween map, it's sure to keep the Festival 8 buzz going strong. Plus it'll also give you a chance to study up on the remaining possibilities (rumor has it there will be 8 albums left when the fest begins) and get familiar with the material, whatever it may be.

WARNING: Spoilers & speculation below. Proceed at your own risk.

Update: The Grateful Living (September 29th @ 12:11 am)

I'm sure this means nothing, but one eagle-eyed fan has noticed that the Grateful Dead are listed as the “Grateful Living” in the xml config file that's driving the gallery. Hmmm… certainly wouldn't mind if American Beauty is “the last record left alive.”

Update: The Grateful Living Part 2 (September 29th @ 2:41 am)

There's a comment below about the Grateful Dead thing pointing out that the word “living” is used in the xml file to denote albums that are still in the mix. I realized that, but in this case it's not just the <stateofbeing> node that says living, but the <title> node as well.

That said, the reader's comment opened my mind up to a much more likely theory. Someone did a search and replace on that xml file, replacing all occurrences of “dead” with “living” — only they didn't select match case — and so the “Grateful Dead” became the “Grateful living.” Note also the lowercase “l” which I incorrectly noted as an uppercase “L” above.

So in effect, I'm still sure it means nothing… other than that speculating on Phish teaser animations is a great way to waste time.

Update: The Grateful Living Part 3 (September 29th @ 1:36 pm)

The Grateful Dead are now listed correctly in the .xml file. Case closed.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 10:36 pm)

Born to Run Languedoc

Strange things are afoot in the haunted gallery, as a number of album covers have started to get a Phish-themed makeover.

  • Phish are in the sardine can on Hello Nasty
  • The hot dog vendor on Pretzel Logic is sporting a viking hat
  • The Boss is playing a Languedoc
  • Trey and Page are moving a keyboard on Moving Pictures
  • T-Rex is now T-rey
  • Tom Petty is wearing a Phish shirt
  • Mike Gordon has joined the Ramones (added 10/7)
  • Rage Against the Machine is now Page Against the Machine (added 10/9)
  • Fishman is on the cover of Exile on Main Street (added 10/10)
  • Ghost in the Machine is now Story of the Ghost in the Machine (added 10/15)
  • AC/DC Back in Black is now AC/DC Bag (added 10/15)
  • Page is in the rearview mirror on the Minutemen album (added 10/16)
  • Fishman's head has been added to one of the Electric Ladyland ladies (added 10/16)

Just as it was starting to feel really repetitive, this is a great twist to keep things interesting.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 11:36 pm)

Original Blind Faith album cover

A commenter below just inquired if anyone noticed that a “new album” had been added to the gallery

Well it's a new album cover, but not a new album. That's the original cover image from Blind Faith's self-titled debut. Rumor has it the naked young girl is Ginger Baker's daughter, but whoever it is she didn't make the cut. The cover was banned in the USA where it was sold with the “bland, but shopper-friendly, band photo.”

Update: Album YouTube Links (October 7th @ 3:23 pm)

Well this is interesting. Some of the albums in the xml config file have been updated to include YouTube links.

I'll give you one guess how many albums got the special treatment…

  1. AC/DC, Hells Bells from Back in Black
  2. Aerosmith, Sweet Emotion from Toys In The Attic (by Gordon/Kottke)
  3. Arcade Fire, Wake Up from Funeral
  4. David Bowie, Oh You Pretty Things from Hunky Dory
  5. David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust from Five Years Live
  6. Led Zeppelin, Going to California from Zeppelin IV
  7. The Band, Up On Cripple Creek from The Band
  8. Clash, Clampdown from London Calling

I sure hope these aren't the finalist because they seem to have forgotten GNR :)

Update: Festival 8 Numerology (October 7th @ 7:17 pm)

Just came across some interesting numerology observations from PTer Sixtwenty294.

8 ball
  • Moving Pictures is Rush's 8th album
  • Escape is Journey's 8th album
  • Kiss Alive II is Kiss's 8th album
  • Tonight's the Night is Neil Young's 8th album
  • Goodbye yellow brick road is Elton John's 8th album (including a live album)
  • Hot Rats is Frank Zappa's 8th album (including comilations) Thx Jeff G.

Plus, they changed 8 album covers — Blind Faith, T.Rex, Springsteen, Beastie Boys, Ramones, Steely Dan, Rush, and Tom Petty. And as noted above, 8 albums have videos.

That's a whole lot of eights. Nice work Sixtwenty294.

Update: Albums with 8 Songs (October 8th @ 12:11 am)

Got some more 8's thanks to a comment from Bryan Lasky — the albums with 8 songs

  • Boston | Boston
  • Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
  • Black Sabbath | Paranoid
  • Metallica | Master Of Puppets
  • Led Zeppelin | IV (Zoso)
  • Pixies | Come On Pilgrim
  • Van Morrison | Astral Weeks
  • Television | Marquee Moon
  • Leonard Cohen | I'm Your Man (eliminated)

Update: YouTube Links Part 2 & 8 Letter Names (October 8th @ 4:55 pm)

A few things to note here.

First, the mis-linked Arcade Fire and Clash videos from yesterday were updated in the xml. Plus, a bunch of additional video links were added some time today. These include…

  1. Frank Zappa, Cosmik Debris from Apostrophe
  2. Led Zeppelin, Misty Mountain Hop from Zeppelin IV
  3. Metallica, Master of Puppets from Master of Puppets
  4. Minutemen, Jesus And Tequila from Double Nickels On The Dime
  5. Nirvana, Lithium from Nevermind
  6. Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb from The Wall
  7. Radiohead, Everything In Its Right Place from Kid A
  8. Rush, YYZ from Moving Pictures
  9. Violent Femmes, Blister In The Sun from Violent Femmes
  10. Yes, I've Seen All Good People from The Yes Album

Next, if you've been enjoying the numbers game and were miffed that there were 10 new videos and not 8, there's a comment from Lorenzo below that I think you'll like — it's the artists on the list with 8 letter names

  • Bob Dylan
  • Bob Seger
  • Brian Eno
  • Firehose
  • Pavement

Update: Electric Ladyland Album Cover (October 8th @ 8:13 pm)

Official Electric Ladyland album cover
Original Electric Ladyland album cover
Linda Eastman Hendrix Experience Alice in Wonderland

Here's an update for the dudes in the front row, and this one actually is riveting.

The official Electric Landyland album cover (left) has been replaced with the original UK cover (center) featuring a harem of late sixties babes. Once again, banned in the USA and elsewhere.

Notably, Hendrix didn't want this cover or the blurry red and yellow mugshot. Instead he'd requested they use a Linda Eastman photo (right) of the Experience sitting with some kids on the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park. Given a vote, I'd have chosen the babes.

Update: Links to Album Streams (October 9th @ 12:52 pm)

For your listening pleasure, I've stated linking up some of the albums below to free, legal streams on Grooveshark. Unfortunately most of their playlists are incomplete or have tons of duplicates, so you basically need to create each one by hand which is time consuming.

That said, if anyone's feeling ambitious and wants to take on an album or two it'd be greatly appreciated. Just shoot me an email or post a comment with the playlist link.

Update: Fall Tour Dates Announced (October 9th @ 10:32 am)

Nothing to do with albums or 8's, but Fall Tour Dates have been announced.

Update: Video Links Part 3 (October 9th @ 1:30 pm)

Got another handful of additional video links that were added some time today. These include…

  1. Blind Faith, Can't Find My Way Home from Blind Faith
  2. Genesis, In the Cage from Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  3. Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced from Are You Experienced
  4. King Crimson, Talking Drum from Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. Van Morrison, Cyprus Avenue from Astral Weeks

Update: Albums with Horns (October 13th @ 12:31 am)

The rumor mill is rapidly churning with the notion that there will be horns at Festival 8, presumably for the musical costume. Here's a list of albums you might be hearing if that rumor pans out…

  • Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
  • Curtis Mayfield | Superfly Soundtrack
  • Chicago | The Chicago Transit Authority
  • David Bowie | Ziggy Stardust
  • Frank Zappa | Apostrophe
  • Frank Zappa | Hot Rats
  • Michael Jackson | Thiller
  • Miles Davis | A Tribute To Jack Johnson
  • Pink Floyd | The Wall
  • Radiohead | Kid A
  • Steely Dan | Pretzel Logic
  • T.Rex | Electric Warrior
  • Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street
  • Rolling Stones | Sticky Fingers
  • The Band | The Band (aka Brown Album)
  • The Clash | London Calling
  • The Police | Ghost in the Machine

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Meanwhile, I'm generally averse to Hitler but the video above cracks me up every time so I'm just embedding to avoid having to go to YouTube — and for the 3 people who still haven't seen it.

Update: Mike's Hotline Hint & more (October 13th @ 11:15 pm)

A few things to report, aside from the fact that CCR, ZZ Top, and the Ramones were killed off today.

First, Mike's hotline is offering a very Gordonesque “hint” at the Halloween album — singing a line from the chorus of the Go-Gos Out Lips Are Sealed. Personally I prefer the Hilary / Haley Duff version. Hear Mike for yourself at 212-330-9092.

Added 10/14 @ 5:45 pm Lots of message board chatter that lips could be a thinly veiled Stones reference.

Added 10/19 @ 8:23 pm “Our lips are sealed” is a lyric in the song Elevation by Television. Coincidence?

Second, I've started a gallery of Festival 8 posters that's already got great art by folks like AJ Masthay, Jamie Huntsman, and Not Pollock.

Finally, I'm doing a Series II Page bobblehead giveaway. This one features Page as The Chairman of the Boards, my favorite of all the bobbles so far.

Update: Phish Festivalography on Sirius (October 14th @ 12:10 am)

Not sure if I'm late to the game on this but I just got wind of a cool sounding show on Sirius called “Phish Festivalography.” It's a four part series starting Thursday the 15th at 9:00 pm Eastern (with replay at 2 am).

Hosted by Jonathan Schwartz from “Gone Phishin',” the exclusive series will cover Phish's festival history in words and music. Sounds promising.

Update: Miner's Case for Ziggy Stardust (October 14th @ 3:00 pm)

Spiders from Mars Fleece

Mr. Miner over at Phish thoughts has made the case for Ziggy Stardust:

For the elaborate theatrics and space-aged costumes alone, Ziggy Stardust would make a superb spectacle for the Halloween set. But beyond the glamorous show this album could provide, the music and lyrics of Bowie’s record fit perfectly with Phish’s place in time.

Read Miner's full post for more.

In other news, Zeppelin IV was just eliminated! Kinda figured that one would stick around for a while but alas, it's gone.

Update: The Album Elimination Set (October 14th @ 5:15 pm)

Got what I think might be a fun concept that revolves around the premise / rumor that there will be 8 albums left at Festival time.

Imagine you have just woken up from a dream. In that dream you were at Festival 8 and the band threw a major curve-ball 2nd set Friday, eliminating albums by playing 6 covers plus a cover encore — one from each of the 7 albums NOT being played.

So for example, in my dream it might look something like this:

  1. Detroit Rock City (Kiss)
  2. Communication Breakdown (Zeppelin)
  3. Poem 58 (Chicago)
  4. Counting Out Time (Genesis)
  5. Every Little Thing She Does (Police)
  6. Rip this Joint (Stones)
  7. Encore: Paradise City (GNR)

Stream a compilation of this fake set

Notably, I mixed and matched what I'd want them to play with what I think they'd play, which I think makes a huge difference, and is probably how a real dream would unfold.

Also note that I believe it's highly unlikely that they'll eliminate the final albums this way*, but given this concept, what would they play in your dream? Post a comment below once you've given it some thought.

* My insane hypothesis here, in case you were wondering, is that they will have a real life version of the haunted gallery. This will be designed by the guy who did the installations at Hampton and Bonnaroo. Throughout the first two days of the fest actors will come in and kill these larger than life covers with real chainsaws, hatchets, spurting blood, etc. The final 3 or so will be killed on stage in a theatrical experience immediately preceding the costume set Saturday.

Update: The Dead are Dead (October 14th @ 8:50 pm)

Crying Dancing Bear

Oh man, you step away for a few hours and they go and kill off the good ol' Grateful Dead. I didn't think for a second they were going to play this, but I wouldn't have complained. For those who were hoping for this one, the only solace I have to offer is this: Terrapin from Virginia Beach '98. Enjoy.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Bands with 4 Members (October 15th @ 12:40 am)

Here's an interesting observation from Greg below: all the bands phish has covered have been 4 members (at one point or another). If that trend continues, here's who you might hear:

  • Black Sabbath
  • Blind Faith
  • Boston (technically)
  • Genesis (v1.0)
  • Kiss
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Metalica
  • Modern Lovers
  • Pink Floyd
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Television
  • The Clash
  • The Doors
  • The Pixies
  • U2
  • Van Halen
  • Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Greg goes on to jokingly note, “That's 16 bands left. 2 weeks left. 16 divided by 2 is 8!!!!!” Fascinating. Just added the Clash and there are now 17 bands in the list rendering Greg's joke humorless.

Update: Handicapping the Albums (October 16th @ 9:40 am)

I don't think anyone's actually keeping books, but Eric Wyman and Matt Dubno have been handicapping the remaining albums. Here are a few of their picks:

  • Sticky Fingers | Matt @ 20:1, Eric @ 3:2
  • Exile on Main Street | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 12:1
  • Moving Pictures | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 25:1
  • Hot Rats | Matt @ 12:1, Eric @ 75:1
  • Electric Ladyland | Matt @ 8:1, Eric @ 3:1

See more handicapping action at 99 Halloweens.

Update: The Campground Albums (October 16th @ 11:50 am)

So this latest rumor has been circulating a bit but the din finally got loud enough that I've decided to post it. People are now saying that there will be 8 campgrounds at Festival 8, one for each of the finalist albums. Here's the rumored list…

  1. David Bowie | Hunky Dory
  2. Genesis | The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway | SBD
  3. Jimi Hendrix | Electric Ladyland
  4. King Crimson | Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. MGMT | Oracular Spectacular
  6. Prince | Purple Rain
  7. Radiohead | Kid A
  8. Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street

I'd take it for what it is, a rumor, but that list pretty well thought out. As I'm sure is the case for most folks, there's a few of my favorites (Stones, Jimi, Genesis), a few I'm not so big on (Radiohead, MGMT), a few I could go either way on (Bowie, Prince), and one I've yet to hear (King Crimson).

Crowd favorite Ziggy Stardust is noticeably absent, leading some to speculate that they'll play a non-campground album. But I'm not so sure as that would mean they'd be playing an album that was previously eliminated, a concept that didn't go over so well with California on the teaser map.

Finally, I saw a great suggestion on another board — the band could go around the campsites late-night and serenade each with a performance of a few tunes from their respective albums. That's probably about the only thing that would make me question my hotel decision, but time will tell.

Update: Much on the Horizon at 8 (October 16th @ 4:40 pm)

Update: The Killer Album Theory (October 16th @ 6:20 pm)

Okay. Here's a theory (not mine) that's either totally obvious or totally out-there, or perhaps a little bit of both.

Let it Bleed Album Cover

The obvious part of the theory (or at least already been discussed here and there) is that the Halloween album is not actually on the list.

The out-there part is that the 100th album is actually the murderer — the one doing all the killing — and that album would be, pun intended, Let it Bleed… the Stones 8th album.

Look forward to your comments on this one.

Hat tip to Cassidy B. for the theory.

Update: Ryan Kerrigan's 8 Balls, David Welker Scratchboard (October 17th @ 5:49 pm)

Ryan Kerrigan Festival 8 Ball

Just added some great stuff to the Festival 8 poster gallery including a set of hand-painted 8 balls by Ryan Kerrigan and an incredible scratchboard piece by David Welker (who also did the Rift cover).

If this is any indication of the type of stuff people will be slinging at the Festival, I might just need an extra suitcase.

Nice work gents.

Update: Pictures at an Exhibition (October 18th @ 11:16 am)

A few followup thoughts to the 100th album theory have emerged in the comment thread below, including one comment from ben who suggests Alice Cooper's 1971 album Killer as the 100th album, noting also that Alice is playing in town on the 30th.

ELP Pictures at an Exhibition

Second, and perhaps more intriguing, is this comment from stealingtime about ELP's 1971 album Pictures at an Exhibition

I doubt they'd play this, as the album has hardly any guitar (listen here) but man does that album cover bear striking resemblance to the Phish gallery or what?

Update: Vendor Map of Festival Grounds (October 19th @ 5:30 pm)

Update removed. Sorry.

Update: Upper Playground / Sonic Living “Day 1” (October 19th @ 10:15 pm)

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8
Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Came across this link on PhishPosters.com tonight. I'm not familiar with either Upper Playground or Sonic Living, both of whom have logos on these, but someone on PhishPosters is guessing that these are Festival 8 laminate designs.

These aren't quite as cool as past laminates if that's the case, though there's plenty of cool stuff in the UP news feed like this brilliant photo gallery of an urban narcolepsy epidemic.

Update: 10:38 pm Interesting. There's a poster gallery on the Sonic Living site that includes these images, sans text. The guitar gun is by Jeremy Fish, the cityscape by Marco Zamora, and the bike by Sam Flores.

Despite the update, I'm still not sure what the examples above are supposed to be . Post a comment if you have any ideas.

Update: Seeking photos from Phish fans (October 21st  @ 1:18 pm)

Local Indio paper The Desert Sun is looking for great photos from past Phish festivals. See here for details and an email address to send pics.

Update: Festival 8 to be Filmed in 3D (October 21st  @ 2:04 pm)

3D glasses

I heard this rumor from a pretty reliable source last week, but this recent PT post seems to confirm it: Festival 8 will be filmed in 3D! Pretty sure that doesn't mean a simulcast, but it could mean a sweet ass IMAX film down the road along the lines of U2 3D or my other favorite band, the Jonas Brothers.

Update: Burble & Borealis (October 22nd @ 5:22 pm)

Here are two of the amazing interactive sculptures that might be melting your face at Festival 8…

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A spectacular, futuristic sculpture of helium-filled balloons packed with LEDs and infrared sensors that floats above spectators in response to infra-red signals and its immediate environment.

A mirage-like installation that glows with colours and ebullient patterns created in response to the competing and collaborative voices, music and screams of people nearby.

Update: Behold the Plasma Cutter (October 23rd @ 5:00 pm)

Here's some more neat stuff the likes of which you just might see at Festival 8. It's two amazing metal sculptures from the portfolio of San Francisco based Dan Das Mann. As you can see, he's not only a genius with the plasma cutter, but also knows a thing or two about melting faces.

Update: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings @ F8? (October 24th @ 10:30 pm)

Here's a rumor that, if true, has been of the better kept secrets of this whole affair.

As posted in this comment, word is Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will join Phish for the musical costume at Festival 8.

The video at right should give you a good idea of Ms. Jones's superb vocals and the Dap-Kings funk / soul musical stylings.

No complaints from this guy if this is legit, which I believe it be. Especially if it means an Exile on Main Street (or Let it Bleed) costume.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Colossal Testaments in Steel and Stone (October 25th @ 3:00 pm)

Here's a trio of large-scale sculptures from Rosanna Scimeca, another artist you might be seeing at 8. According to her site, Rosanna likes to “explore how the observer may interface, interact, and identify with her installations.” Yeah, I can give her a preview: they're going bug out.

Update: Pollock Halloween Mask + HeadCount Trivia Contest (October 26th @ 1:45 pm)

Today Jambands.com posted information about a Pollock Halloween mask to be available at the WaterWheel table gallery throughout Festival 8. Plus, HeadCount will be running a trivia contest and the grand prize winner will get an uncut sheet of masks with a  one-of-kind Pollock doodle.

Sample trivia question: “What town does Trey Anastasio, John Popper of Blues Traveler and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors all hale from?”

Pollock Festival 8 Teaser

There's also the recently surfaced image at right, which I believe to be a teaser for a Pollock Festival 8 poster, though I'm not 100% on that.

Poster or not, can't wait to see the mask! In the mean time, here's a growing Festival 8 poster gallery.

Update: Stage Photo & Viewing Platform Sketch (October 26th @ 6:45 pm)

Today Twitter user @BathtubGym posted what I believe to be the first pic of the stage setup, as well as a sketch of the viewing platform for the Dan Das Mann installation.

I'm sure I'll say this ten times over the next 2 days, but I can't believe I just got MORE excited.

Update: Festival 8 to be Simulcast Live on Sirus (October 26th @ 9:54 pm)

This just in: all 8 sets of Festival 8 including the musical costume and acoustic set will be simulcast live on JamOn, channel 17 on SIRIUS!!!

Not a subscriber? Good news… you can sign up for a free trial and hear the simulcast without spending a dime. Huge thanks to whoever is responsible for arranging this. Jam On!

Update: They Have Created Fire (October 27th @ 1:56 am)

If you're anything like me, you're somehow riveted by fire — and you'll definitely be making it a point to see this six-pack fire artists rumored to be appearing at Festival 8:

Update: Glitches, XML fun, & Gordon's Hotline (October 28th @ 1:18 pm)

The Wall

Looks like there was some sort of glitch in the album teaser on Phish.com for a bit when Apostrophe was killed — as the gallery was only showing living albums, and the Wall and Exile had gone missing. All seems back to normal now, though the Wall is indeed dead as seen at right.

Also appears that someone's having some fun with the xml file — with Michael Jackson changing to “Michael Jackson Is Alive“ and Yes changing to “Yes Yes Yes Yes.“ — but I'm not reading into either of those too much.

Speaking of having fun, Gordon's hotline (212-330-9092) has had two recent updates, the latest playing off the 100th album theories that are floating around.

And last but not least, I just checked into my flight for tomorrow. If anyone's on Southwest from Chicago at 12:35, hit me up for a free drink coupon. I'll be the dork carrying the poster tube.

Update: Jamtopia Meetup | Friday. Setbreak. Picnic Area. (October 28th @ 4:18 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

Okay, let's make this thing official.

After extensive reviews of the map and comments, I believe the best time and place to meet is setbreak on Friday at the picnic area. It's at the back of the concert field Page side.

That way if people want to hit the Honey Bucket or grab food or drinks or whatever it's all convenient.

Update: Get a FREE scoop of Ben & Jerry's (October 28th @ 5:24 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

I just got an email from Ben & Jerry's with some great news.

In addition to being huge fans of Jamtopia, Vermont's finest ice cream purveyors will be offering free scoops of Phish Food at Festival 8.

All you have to do is “particip8” in a social action with one of the charities at the WaterWheel booth (e.g. sign a petition, make a donation) to get your free delights.

Update: More Stage Photos (October 28th @ 6:25 pm)

Got some more stage pics, this time from Twitter user @briankarol:

I'm thinking they need more speakers!

Update: Festival 8 Wristband (October 29th @ 12:11 am)

Festival 8 wristband

I'm not sure if this is a staff wristband or just the standard issue, but either way it looks pretty sweet sauce. If the production values of this wristband are any indication this is really going to be one hell of a shindig.

Meanwhile, as I write this, Van Morrison and Zeppelin were killed off. Only 9 remain. Can't get there soon enough.

Update: Festival 8 Shout-out on Conan (October 29th @ 8:08 am)

Well this is surreal. Masterfully bearded Phish fan Rob Howard was in the Late Night crowd yesterday and got interviewed by Conan to “promote Phish.”

As you'll see when you watch the video, Conan had a little something extra planned to help get the word out about Festival 8.

Props to Rob for representing Phish — and the great state of Illinois :)

2033 Comments so far

please no mgmt..just finished listening to that album for the third time trying as hard as i could to get into it just in case to no avail. all the albums in the past seem to be a nod to one of the greats…mgmt, newish band, forget great, imo not good. I wont leave because im there for the music, and who knows maybe they will turn it into something i enjoy, but based on the album i just listned to, not sure how. as long as astral, lamb lies down, and mgmt get knocked off i’ll be hppy with anything left on that list. First halloween in 11 years i just dont see them playing a newer band.

3d 8h 57m..cant fucking wait

@ocean - as far as ‘stateside retailers’, normal box-stores like Barnes & Noble, Borders, Target, etc.

I hope this is the day when prince, mgmt, springsteen, jackson and radiohead will get the axe! will enjoy any of the remaining albums including ‘let it bleed” if the missing album theory is correct.

If anyone is in LA tomorrow (Wed) night and looking for something fun to do, check out the Hollywood Improve on Melrose Ave for either the 8p or 10p ComedyJuice show.  Best live standup show in the nation and they are recording for a ‘best of’ compilation CD with a ton of great comics. Hilarious stuff and some of the most talended comics and A list players in the world.

Thursday hike in Joshua Tree.

Fri night there is a DJ/Disco/poolside party happening with DJ Rubia from San Fran at the Royal Express hotel which is located about 3 miles from the venue.  I think they are beginning around 11:30pm(ish) and going until whenever.  I’m not sure 100% but I believe there is a shuttle running to/from the venue and hotel.  There is a pool and it’s BYO beverages/coolers, etc. It will go late.

ALSO, since flu and sickness is spreading quickly right now, everyone keep your immune system strong and be careful when kindly sharing whatever and use HAND SANITIZER and wash your hands frequently!  Festivals are one of these places where there’s lots of germs and folks can and do get sick.  Case in point, I got the flu for three days after Big Cypress.

we are getting so close.  the excitement is overwhelming!!!!
everyone travel safe and have a great time!!!!!!!
see you in indio!!!!

Well I don’t have any theories or news to report.  But I have been watching Flightaware.com, more specifically the the Bermuda Dunes airport in Palm Springs to see where the private jets are coming from…may provide a clue!  Thanks for keeping me entertained

@david b & ryan d

i’m not quite clear on your discussion, but MGMT does use guitars in their live act. I saw them right before they had their “big break” you could call it,and also at roo. I had never heard of them before and then like a month later they were everybody’s favorite band it seemed. But I still dont want Phish to cover them. Honestly they would do a much better job than MGMT themselves, being that these kids are not exactly what I would call “good” musicians. They are horrible as a live act and I dont see them holding up for very long; I foresee them fading out within a couple years tops.

But anyways, Zappa and Bowie are my picks(being that they hung up on London Calling) from the list. I still have faith in the 100th album theory, although I have no idea what the murderer could be.

PS—Shimon are a bunch of assholes.

As Festival 8 approaches I am finding it harder and harder to concentrate on my “real life”.  Productivity at work is coming to a standstill as half of my time is spent reading posts on this site!  What a wonderful outlet.  I can’t wait to, as trey would say, check my real life at the gate and enter a phantasy world for three solid days.  As for what they cover, whatever it is it will be great, and I don’t even want to try to fool myself into believing that I can predict what it will be.  In 98 everyone was expecting dark side of the moon and was surpised when the busted out velvet underground.  Even though I wasn’t all that familiar with VU at the time, I still had a blast at the show and I’m sure the same will be true this year.  Can’t wait to see you all at the show…keep your eyes open for the big ladybug.

to many who have made this type comment:
“you guys need to stop obsessing over what they are going to play and focus on having a good time”

Don’t worry about us . Were having fun.I can only speak for myself but we really aren’t obsessing about what album there going to play. I think many of us, like myself, have what you’d call ‘office’ jobs which enable us to secretly spend our day talking to other Phish fans about how freakin excited we are about the fest. This is a countdown elimination with live daily updates to the gallery so instead of thinking 6 more days , 5 more days, were thinking what r they eliminating tomorrow?

This month would have dragged if it weren’t for this site, Thanks Todd .

@Greg from behind you!!!!!!!

“Gotta Blank Space Where My Map Should Be?”

That is The Wall, no?

everyone else:

phish play michael jackson album. good one!
what are you people on?

this is a hippie jam band, not a pop sensation. david bowie is about as gay as it gets. true they did mock a katy perry song. i guess they wanted a taste of cherry chapstick.

did you hear that they preserved michael jackson’s body with wax? they are going to melt it down and mold it into little MJ dolls. That way little kids can play with him for a change!

Michael Jackson hasnt been this stiff since he spent the weekend with McCauley Culkin!

And you gotta love the fact that his skin is finally turning black again!

Anyway, phish show is going to be great. you guys need to stop obsessing over what they are going to play and focus on having a good time.

I want to hear the SICKEST Ghost ever and a bad ass Wolfman to top it off. I can’t wait till 8!

Explain"stateside retailors”

@Ryan Dorran

“this mgmt talk—is just trey trying to prove that he is up to date with current music and not an old man.”

Do you guys really think the band had anything to do with selecting at least 91 of the 99 albums on the board?  For all we know the band could have told there web lackey the 8 finalists (if you belive that theory), or1 album that was going to be played or just kept the real album secret (if you subscribe to the 100th album theory) and some 22 y.o. intern picked the remaining albums to throw up on the wall, hence MGMT.

I am not hating here, “just sayin’” as we have heard so many times before.

Personally I think it’s going to be Let it bleed.. .thats if it s not Exile or Larks’ Tongue… but only if its not Kid A… though it’‘ll probably be Lamb lies down… but mostly likely Bowie or Bowie… or Purple Rain.  Actually, its going to be MGMT, cause I hear Trey is a big fan.

{Seriously thought, this has been good fun, thanks}

It’s obviously not going to be countdown but I know you already know that.  If they do pull out countdown or even better Rust In Piece I will instantly blow a load in my pants

Yeah MGMT don’t play guitars at all…

Do some research!!!

They already tricked US, now we will get a treat. Think about it….

Hey Team Phish Flash Dudes,
Kill somethin’ already this Minutemen rerun is getting old :~)-

phish play michael jackson album. good one!

@ Ryan Dornan “thanks for enlightening us. first off, there are no guitars on that mgmt album. second, animal collective sounds NOTHING like mgmt—your comparison is absurd. the only thing they have in common is that they are on indy labels.”

Yea, the OTHER thing they have in common is that neither group uses guitars.  Also, that’s a very fair comparison…the psychadelic ambience, vocal harmonies and heavy digital textures and reverb vocals.  First dude is right, CHECK OUT ANIMAL COLLECTIVE"S NEW ONE - MERRIWETHER POST PAVILLION It’s super sick.  See you all on Pacific Time

we don’t need no dark sarcasm…

just had this thought, of the albums left, only 3 aren’t readily available from stateside retailors…  Larks, Lamb, and Exile…

and as i was laying down to sleep last night, for some reason Megadeth’s ‘99 Ways to Die’ got stuck in my head…  Which led me to think about their album ‘Countdown to Extinction’, so I guess that’s my one in a million guess…

HellChrist No, Bruce do not come to Indio. Never happen, too close to bonaroo , theyd have to ad Bruce to the band medical insurance if he plays with them anymore.

I must agree MJs death just over a month ago, takes Thriller out of the running. They may have been planning it and ‘the call’ from Page may have been to decide not to play after his death, if they ever even considered it . It would just be wrong, there going to videotape and sell these shows, do you know how much red-tape would be involved to do that if the DVD contains Michael s music, especially now?
Because of the DVDs Im assuming its a less current more classic artist that rights could be easily obtained.

If Sharons there then maybe Exile but even the Stones still tour.
Im thinkin Television-Marquee Moon more than ever.

But all that said, I will be shakin’ my booty & screamin NaNa-na-Na during PYT if they do play thriller

“Bruce just played Born to Run in its entirety with a band for 2 nights of a 5 night run at Giants Stadium not even 30 days ago and he played with Phish at Bonnaroo in June”

exactly the reason why they won’t play it.

it’s not going to be thriller.
it’s not going to be thriller.
it’s not going to be thriller.
it’s not going to be thriller.
it’s not going to be thriller.
it’s not going to be thriller.
it’s not going to be thriller.
it’s not going to be thriller. (infinity)

@ AJ - Bruce just canceled his show in KC last night due to the death of his road manager (also cousin), found dead in his hotel room. No Born to Run this year.

@ AJ
Bruce is horrible. At Bonnaroo I went to check out Bruce with an open mind, thinking he was going to put on a good show. I left after Santa Clause is coming to town, one of the worst “shows” I ever went to.

Whatever they play will be awesome, just PLEASE NO BRUCE!!!!!!!!!

start killing stuff off already! this is killing me!

Well, we have 3 more days of killing to go, and the 7 leaked camps (or 8 if you include MGMT) are all still alive. If you believe they will all be left come Thursday, we have 10 more left to kill before then. I predict today’s fatalities to be:

Ziggy (finally…)
Van Morrison

This would leave MGMT, Thriller, Zeppelin I, and Zappa as the only remaining “non-campsite” albums.  Everyone knows it won’t be Thriller, and while I now appreciate MGMT after being exposed to them thanks to the album teaser, I don’t think they’d play it. If you believe the album IS on the wall and IS NOT one of the campsites, it’s looking like Zep I or Apostrophe.  If you believe the album IS NOT on the wall, it’s wide open :)

Todd - thanks for creating such a bitchen site that I now spend more time reading comments, rumors and updates than working.  Can’t wait to roll out to Indio on Thursday!

Well I’ve been watching this thing since it started and I’ve probably ran through about 100 theories in my head…but this one seems to make the most sense…Bruce just played Born to Run in its entirety with a band for 2 nights of a 5 night run at Giants Stadium not even 30 days ago and he played with Phish at Bonnaroo in June.  Also, Bruce has taken this weekend off from his tour..maybe to go trick or treating…maybe to fly to Indio….just a speculation.

“I don’t know why everyone is hating on MGMT so much.  It’s actually progressive, artistic, and would make a great party IMO.  That album + Chris Kuroda’s lights + a Phish twist = crazy halloween dance party.  Regardless of what it is I will be happy.  They have done this a few times, I think they know what they are doing.

PS- for those of you who actually like MGMT, check out Animal Collective”

thanks for enlightening us. first off, there are no guitars on that mgmt album. second, animal collective sounds NOTHING like mgmt—your comparison is absurd. the only thing they have in common is that they are on indy labels.

this mgmt talk—is just trey trying to prove that he is up to date with current music and not an old man.

its a total red herring.  “It would be a total party”—yeah, I don’t think that’s what they are aiming for—-the other 6 phish sets (excluding the acoustic set) will probably be a total party.

I’m down for whatever they want to play. but this mgmt talk is ridic.

If they really do have a horn section this year I praying to the gods of sound they play Jesus Left Chicago.  I’ve been dying to hear them play that live in person.

Listening to the Stones this would be an awesome record to dance to.  I’m kinda hoping for it now.  Which means I just jinx it! haha, sorry everyone.

I dont think people are necessarily HATING on MGMT. Its the fact that there is just no way in hell they will play it. Im going and could care less what they play, but given that MGMT is not classic and infact, a relatively new band who currently tours, mostly for that album, it just seems stupid.

I also want to put in my two cents about the campground album theory. I really doubt they will name each campground after the remaining albums. As said here before, the Halloween set is such a small part of this festival. Literally its about 7/8ths. It would be akward having these campground names after saturday afternoon.

This thread/site is awesome, dont get me wrong. But I think there is way to much concern with ONE SET. Lets just get funky to some phish tunes! We basically get four full shows, one having novelty sets (acoustic and album cover).

In front of the soundboard.

See you there!

- Markah

Too high to get over (yeah yeah)
Too low to get under (yeah yeah)
You’re stuck in the middle (yeah yeah)
And the pain is thunder (yeah yeah)

eat it PiNT

I really just want to hear a mind melting Reba… and a Killer
Mikes Song > I am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove

and if they happened to throw 2001 into the Mikes song Trilogy ...
that would be sick!

Uhg… I just woke up… it’s become harder to sleep with Phish on the brain and Festival 8 only a couple days away… can’t stop wondering what album they’ll play… but I did happen to “wake up with a vision blured” and now “all my efforts are deterred,” but I’ll still do my best to “reconstruct this image lost”...

Festival 8
8 sets of music
figure 8 shaped donuts
The only album to out of the 99 to win 8 grammies-  Thriller

I have know idea why I woke up with this in my head… I was pulling for Zep 1… but damn…. it’s Cali… and Michael just died…
and don’t forget there’s that whole thing about Phish’s first show….
when the people at the part didn’t want to hear them any more…
what did they turn on?  Michael Jackson’s Thriller…

welp… there you go…

Crippity Crap….

@PiNT’S Psychiatric Team:

People DO need to stop with this.  Enough with the Michael Jackson crap.  He just died—-they do not need to “honor” him.  He was no inspiration for them.  IF they were going to play MJ if would be Thriller.  The old story about how they were replaced at the frat party (I think) with a tape of Thriller after their “first set” playing together.  BUT I think this old story means they HATE Thriller, not like it.  And this story was a joke as to how pathetically they were received the first time they played.  They would not want us to ENJOY Thriller more than them (even if it was them…).

So the only likely MJ album would be thriller, but it’s not.  No way.  There is TOO MUCH MJ hype this year and it is somewhat wrong to have this whole killer concept going and then play an album of someone who was (allegedly) JUST killed.

My vote is for Let it Bleed.  I love what the last song of that set would be.  That would be the best sing along for all of you posting here!!!

So what does this mean for next year?  Does this mean that none of these 99 albums will be in the running since they’ve already been “considered”?

Lamb/Marquee Moon

If (and this is a big “if”) all the rumors pan out than the only album left is Exile.

1) The leaked campground map rounds it down to 8 albums.
2) Of those 8 albums, only 2 use horns: Exile & Kid A
3) Of those 2 albums, only 1 needs a prominent female vocal: Exile.

Of course, I am not totally sold that MGMT will make the final 8.  Remember, it was never on the leaked campground map.  Out of the 17 that are left, the only other one that meets the horns/female vocals criteria is The Wall (wishful thinking).

@Greg from behind you

“But fact of the matter is that on the map there is a Whited Out part under hunky dory (bottom right).”

That “whited out part” is a residential area.  Check out Google Maps.

all signs are now pointing to exile on main st. (the horn section/backup singer, it’s on the map, much of exile was recorded in l.a., it’s a double album, etc.)  At this point, I would be surprised if it was anything else. I would also be surprised if anything on the map is eliminated before the festival starts.  Exile should be awesome though, one of my top picks throughout.  everybody have a blast-wish I could go!

@djcalpone from santa monica, ca
I heard the same from a friend working at the fest… as of last week they were only at 30-40K sold… which is even lower than I thought.

We need your help.  PiNT has collapsed into a ball on the floor, curled up in a fetal position, gently rocking back and forth chanting ‘it won’t be MJ, it won’t be MJ”.

Apparently, he’s been making perfect sense and detailing for a month why Phish won’t cover Michael Jackson, but a contigent of obsessed Micheal Jackson backers keep making a case for it, even though it is not based on anything factual other than a gut feeling that it would be ‘sick’.

Please refrain from posting that you think it will be Micheal Jackson until Mr. PiNT is able to resume normal functions again.

Thank you.

Greg from behind you!!!!!!!

The whited out part is a mobile home park that is private property.  That’s why it was whited out.  Check out google earth.

Maybe the great pumpkin will come and wipe out all our memories and phish will play 8 notes from every track in all 99 LPs consecutively and then our fairy godmothers will come and turn us into knife wielding maniaces and we’ll throw knives at everyone in costumes while that LP is being played, and once in band camp…..

EXILE -or- LAMB - or- HUNKY DORY - or - LADYLAND.  Its over johnny…. over!

I don’t know why everyone is hating on MGMT so much.  It’s actually progressive, artistic, and would make a great party IMO.  That album + Chris Kuroda’s lights + a Phish twist = crazy halloween dance party.  Regardless of what it is I will be happy.  They have done this a few times, I think they know what they are doing.

PS- for those of you who actually like MGMT, check out Animal Collective

@ Ziggy

Take your space rocket to hell.  David Bowie = Phish song not Phish cover set.  It makes me laugh at all the ppl crying for this album…please let it be Zigly please.  Anything but Ziggy and anyting but “anything but me!”  Besides Ziggy was probably inside sticky fingers when it died…

@djcalpone from santa monica, ca
I heard the opposite actually. they’re saying 80K.

Listening to Ziggy now.  It’s got pretty much all the things needed for a good costume for Phish.  Rocking and a bit odd with just enough familiarity to make the masses happy, plus it’s pretty dynamic.  I don’t know if they can totally pull off all the lyrics, but if they jam the crap out of it, no one will care. I’m thinking more and more this is the likely choice, but… I’m pretty lost really.  Nice work Phish, well played.

Thriller was the first thought in my head of what they would play…..even before they released the choices…especially since he died this year. I’m sticking to it.

OK now that this post has been going strong for wa while now, I’m kind of surprised more people don’t realize it WILL be Off the Wall w/ the Dap Kings…From one who thought it was Appetite but was convinced otherwise after being treated to a little R&R session in what makes this band tick - and realizing the what COULD and WOULD be monumental on so many levels….ie. Ziggy Stardust…a beautiful and epic odyssey song-for-song of which fits into a Phish set like OJ still does in the white Bronco….

But alas, the three Ziggy cuts my head already has Phish playing in summer 2012 will be to no avail…

I mean c’mon it’s Off the Wall people….Posted I don’t know, but the Dap Kings tour-opener in Burlington at JH in Nov. wasn’t the kicker after all this…?

I’m not saying I’m pumped…(but thank above it’s not the HUGE WASTE of time that it would be to even contemplate such novice crap as MGMT, let alone cover it - bc let me say that nothing could ever equate to a bigger pile of shit on this thing we’va all been doing for so long…this thing which still makes us question whether tour has to ever bow to grander concerns.  Yes you noobs who still havent seen the Breakfest Club….MGMT is not all that..In fact it’s pretty f*ck*n far from it…And Yes, on my hundredth show at Halloween….I would walk back to the tent….

Neither here nor there…da ciba set in and me get a little ... off the wall…

Which brings me back to my point….

Your mother lied to both of us…..You’re adopted.

just to hear Trey destroy ‘evil urges’ would be worth it…

I just wanted to thank you for having such an entertaining set of posts on your site.  For the last two weeks I have been logging on at the end of the day to see the new posts and rumors and each day I get more excited about going to the shows.  I don’t know what they are going to play and I don’t care.  Whatever they play I am sure I will enjoy it.

I hope all of you make it safe and sound.

@ScottG I am totally serious about the news. I’ll be wearing gold reebok pump hightops and dressed as a life gaurd.

now more speculating.

K. here we go.Maybe the post about the album cover parking lots (the O.G. one) was not really 100% true. If I worked for phish I could easily leak that and everyone would be all “Whoa”. But fact of the matter is that on the map there is a Whited Out part under hunky dory (bottom right). maybe it’s not mgmt? maybe it’s something like Odelay or some album that is untitled or maybe even ziggy stardust. it’s whited out either way.thats weird, a leaked map with a blank spot. (I’m no map maker) but that is weird.

moving on.

@noKnowno: if you know something just flipping say it. I think your allegations are b.s. (p.s. I do not own gold hightops and I won’t be going as a lifegaurd) but as far as your clue about reading between the lines goes the the ARE in caps? ARE….R….AR…...ARtist….ARtist formerly known as prince? I guess what Im saying is your clues are whack.I need more meat and less bone. one love!!!

K what else….oh yeah…..it seems like a ton of steve winwood and eric clapton things have come up. is there maybe a linking band that has done work with the 99? (still high)

and there will totes be axes and arrows and daggers in pictures of the dead lots. I can’t imagine it any other way.

don’t forget to have fun everyone

one other thing. If you guys ever have kids and one of them when he’s eight years old accidentally sets fire to the living room rug… go easy on him. -BTTF/Huey Lewis For Life (not death!!!!!)

p.s.p.s. I meant nothing personal noknowno…just more meat

zappa, it’s decided

I think Larks Tongues in Aspic by King Crimson is HIGHLY unlikely.  It’s an incredible album but not particularly user-friendly on first listen and certainly not danceable or funky.  But I’m a huge King Crimson fan, and I read Robert Fripp’s (leader of KC) online diary and news updates from his company’s site regularly.

I note that, out of the blue, Robert is appearing on Oct 26 in Seattle w/ a guitar troupe called “Tuning the Air.”  This is of no consequence except that his diary has given no other indication that Fripp was traveling to the US.  See:  http://www.dgmlive.com/news.htm?entry=2690

In other words, 5 days before Halloween Robert Fripp is on the west coast of the US.  Perhaps he’s a guest performer for a Phish cover of Larks.

For someone in my shoes, that would be unbelievable.

I listened to Exile On Main Street again today, imagining it being played by Phish and while it wouldn’t be my first choice, it would definitely be a great set.  Rocks Off would be a fun opener, Tumbling Dice > Sweet Virginia would be awesome, Shine A Light > Soul Survivor (both with Sharon Jones) would be a fantastic end to the set and Loving Cup with horns would bring down the house, but the one song I think they would absolutely rip up is Torn and Frayed.  Listen to it and imagine the pedal steel replaced by Trey’s signature guitar tone with a huge Phishy jam at the end and it would make a strong case for the one to remain in rotation.  I would be more than happy if they played this as the cover set.

Although Alan White of YES has a home nearby, he will be in Slovakia with YES in concert that night.  Jon Anderson lives close by and has a few days off before his solo show in Edmonton.  The Yes Album would be cool and it’s simple to play compared to other Yes albums like Relayer or Going For The One.  Phriends check out the live Yessongs if you want to hear some powerful sh*t. (Goes well with powerful sh*t!!)
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway would be sick. One of the greatest pieces of music in all of history. I’m sure I will get violently ill if it’s played since I can’t attend (Boo!).
“Anyway, they say she comes on a pale horse, but I think I hear a TREYn.”

I’m sure the balloon boy costume will be popular too.

hearing rumors of very low attendance at 8. anyone else hear the same?

Nice, @ColdGreenTea—my 3 yr old knows all the words to Ocelot; if only we were bringing her we could get the kiddos together for a full-on jam session.  But it’s parents-only this weekend!

@Greg from behind me!!!!

I almost wrote a joke post the other day making a strong case for Huey Lewis.  But, I think it’s actually funnier the way you did it.  Because I think you’re serious.  Which I find awesome.  No sarcasm.  Awesome.  You’re the type of people I want to party with this weekend.  So clearly up for absolutely anything.

“a street in Genesis called Sussudio street. Did anyone else catch that?”

No I missed that.I have a copy of the map on work computer but not here but will take your word. Major snafu, almost a way to let us know its fake. If thats true then totally bogus map and its wide open again, which is sweet because Id really prefer a couple of those albums. Electric Ladyland,Purple Rain or Crimson. They still haven’t killed any on the camp list though.

I need to post a comment in response to those who have said that Exile would be ‘anti-climactic’

besides Loving Cup (one of the most beautiful buzzes ever)

-end of Tumbling Dice (keep on rollin’)
-end of Sweet Virginia
-all of Happy
-end of Let it Loose
-Shine a Light

Plus, horns all over the place. Female vocals.

It is seriously going to be awesome.

(oops, I mean if they don’t play Michael Jackson or MGMT, which is definitely happening)

is everybody 100% sure “damn the torpedoes” was the 1st album killed. because if not I want Sports (polo) by Huey Lewis and The News brought back to life. maybe the last album alive will be the first album dead. I;m pretty high right now….see you in a few days.

p.s. Sports is “Fun” chaulk full of hits including The Heart Of Rock and Roll. it has a ton of great players on it. and it can easily be manipulated in a good phishy kinda way. The News!!!!!!!!!!!!

First off Todd, way to go on this page man….not getting a whole lot done at work these past couple weeks. It’s been extremely entertaining to hear everyone’s take on everything and I wish to god i could be in attendance this weekend. Aside from pulling for Marquee Moon, I really don’t know what to expect from the fellas. I honestly don’t know who or what to believe, which is precisely why I love this band.

Case in Point: The night before Phish played at Toyota Park in Chicago in August this summer, by some act of God, I met Trey and requested that Phish play “Paul and Silas” the next evening. I didn’t think there was any possible way they would play it, having been almost 11 YEARS since the last time it was heard in public, but sure enough, they nailed it the next night!

Expect the absolute unexpected phriends! Have a great, safe, and happy weekend!

I must warn you all that I will type in all caps in an extremely annoying manner when Thriller gets the axe.  I drool at the thought.

They   are   not   covering   Micheal   Jackson.  I cannot believe how hard people are holding on to that possibility… its like bizzaro world for me.

It will be either Exile, Lamb, Hunky Dory or Larks’ Tongue in order of likelyhood.

This is a lock at this point, use logic and deduction and you’ll come to the same conclusion based on the solid evidence we’ve all been presented.

Any one of those four will provide an amazing, entertaining, and lifetime memorable event.

PS: Congratulations Todd, you’re website is a success.  You should trademark ‘jamtopia’ if you haven’t already!  Thanks, you sound like a really good guy, I work in the industry… this was a labor of love!

Off topic or not, after reading posts for so long now, I’ve decided to chime in!  Believe it or not, it’s been ten years since I last saw Phish (Oswego, NY Jul ‘99) ... yes, ten years!  I am so happy to get back on the train again, there aren’t enough words to describe it!  I leave bright and early Thursday morning out of the Tucson, AZ area ... I’ll hit Joshua Tree Natl Park and then hopefully set up my tent and settle in late that same afternoon!  Phish can play whatever their hearts desire for the Halloween cover.  I am just overJOYed to see them again ... so, having said that, travel safe everyone ... it’s been a blast reading all the opinions/ideas/thoughts here on this site!  See you all there!

@Scott G
Thanks for the links man.

The 100th album is Exodus by Bob Marley, recorded after an attempted assassination.

Key tracks “Jammin”, “One Love”, “Three Little Birds”, “Natural Mystic”

I know they won’t , but one can hope.

“many 1.0 non N()ew()bs getting a hotel cause they are getting up there in age”

OMG…you’re so right!  That’s me…when did it happen?  And WHYYYYYYYYYYY?????

Definitely doig the resort thing… bringing the family… my 3 and 5 year olds do a good tweezer ;-)  My 5 year old sings the solo from lizards and they both jam out to stash “wooooah”

Maiden T-shirt (check)

Open Mind about Costume set (check)

getting exciting now!

This thing is a blast to read. I am so fucking excited that I can’t feel my teeth. This is almost like the anticipation for my first show. Hooray for Phish. Todd you ought to come up with a secret handshake and not tell anyone. Phish Fest Status

Holt shit! They have been doing some serious slaughtering today, haven’t they? Wow… Some heavy contenders are now gone… This is exciting!

I guess I’m gonna jaw to resubmit my top three at Ziggy, My Bloody Valentine, and Off the Wall with about only a 15% chance on MBV since they reunited at All Points West…. but hey, one great reunion deserves another, eh?

I’m 100% sold that none of the campsites are THE costume. And the only 1% clue that makes me think theap could be a fraud is that there is a street in Genesis called Sussudio street. Did anyone else catch that? A major snaffu IMHO as I don’t think Phish would mock Genesis like that. Your thoughts?

Cant wait to see what they cover - dont mind at all what they choose cause it’s guaranteed to be fantastic no matter. As for it all… 3 fucking days ladies and gentlemen! WHOS READY??? - im so god damn excited bring on the Phish! ... As well for anyone with their best friend Lucy coming, I know she’s friendly and we’ve met plenty of times and im sure she’ll be around to meet us all so im not stressing but if anyones in abundance make an attemp to find me in the Gin shirt the 30th by the soundboard/equiptment in the lawn-ness before the show starts ;) Im always down to meet a new friend and see your friend lucy again!!

Safe Travels to Everyone & Enjoy Yourselves!!

Just listened to Hunky Dory AND Ziggy.  With a couple exception songs, Bowie bites!  How can so many people keep saying they want Bowie?  It took all self control to even make it past Oh! You Pretty Things.

Am I in the minority here or does Bowie really suck?!

Wish i could make it out there for this.. Down With lousy lyme Disease.  I’ve been watching this unfold and even though I won’t be there I’m still quite excited about it.

@Mykeil Turzilli
“close the set before the costume set with Good times Bad Times..Then they open the Costume set with Babe I’m gonna Leave You”

Really like that theory! Now THAT sounds like something Phish would do. I will shit if they close Set 1 with that and immediately yell Mykeil Turzilli at the top of my lungs. Holy crap Zep I would be insane as well, I forgot about all the organ for Page, could happen.

@Todd I will try 2 remember, soundboard Fri setbreak-soundboard Fri setbreak-soundboard Fri setbreak

Zappa.  Apostrophe.  I’ve heard all the rumors but this would just be insane.

Already 5 deaths today!  It’s still early

Haven’t seen this on here anywhere yet, but this seemed like kind of big news.  They just announced on “Jam On” on XM/Sirius that they will be broadcasting every set from Festival 8 live.  Those who aren’t coming can tune in to the whole show via satellite.

36 hours till i leave!!!!

so when i look at the phish website….now that it is down to the wire…i get ALL upset as the clicky thingy goes back and forth and sooooooo soooooo nervous that it is going to eliminate ziggy.

god i hope it is ziggy.

Yes - The Yes Album would be epic !!!

alan white from yes has a house in indio…...jus sayin.

the tix i have are pending, but if anyone is interested incase fletch flakes (no offence fletch), email me at: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

i want 375$ for 2 tix + a camping pass

ps - thanx Todd, i been cracking out on this site like its a blue buddah!!

Listen to this theory, They close the set before the costume set with Good times Bad Times, An encore that we’ve heard them play, leading people to believe that they wont play Zeppelin 1, Then they open the Costume set with Babe I’m gonna Leave You, seeing as how this is the second song on the album, right after Good Times Bad Times.  Probably wont happen, But an interesting theory I had

If I was forced to bet all my possessions and only allowed to pick three albums that I thought they would (not should) play, here they are:

Off the Wall
Let It Bleed

Thats right, 2 of the 3 most likely albums, imho, are not even on the list.

For all you phans concerned which variable someone else is in the x.0 lingo, remember that Phish could play anything, and unless you were a closeminded douchebag who had already decided to not like it out of spite, you would naturally enjoy it.

So you are going to pay $225 for a ticket, $500 for an airplane ticket, $100 on beer, and likely more on “other” entertainment…and you would walk away from their musical costume because you philosophically disagreed with the choice?

I was at ‘96 and ‘98 Halloween, and would NEVER have wanted either of those albums beforehand, and absolutely am grateful they played them.

Predictions for cut Tuesday:

Van Morrison
Led Zep

Maybe if we get enough Maiden shirts around, we’ll get the band to notice, and get an impromptu cover or mention:)  Not likely, but I’ll be wearing mine on Friday.  I have no idea what they will play, as this board and their site have put far too many possibilities in my head, but it will be awesome!!!  They will not let anyone down.  I am so frickin’ excited, departing in 3days!!!!!!!

If it’s anything like the Big Cypress set-up, the back of your lot should end up butting up against the back of someone else’s lot.  Not to mention the lots of the folks to your left and right.  So, even though the lots will probably be painted off, there should be room for urban sprawl if you have friendly neighbors.

Check out the layout at Big Cypress…where the streets were named after legendary Phish venues:

That “x” isn’t my camp.  I was somewhere on 3rd Ave, just south of Amy’s farm.

Any way, from this image you can see what you should likely expect at 8.  If everyone parks at the front of their lot, then there is a lot of common space in the backs of the lots for communal living.

So, have fun campers!  I happen to have a friend with a house and a pool nearby, so I’m going soft.  No camping for me…but my heart will be with all you campground warriors.

P.S. For anyone else who is lodging off-site, a really great Vermont band called Twiddle is playing after-shows at the Embassy Suites La Quinta Hotel ballroom.  Just three miles from the fest.

I know 8 sets of Phish is probably enough for anyone, but if you find yourself with the right kind of buzz late-nite, maybe you’ll want to push the evening into the small hours with another smokin’ live band.

Heh and now the Minutemen killed.  First, what happened to all of those with inside knowledge?  Second, it sounds like someone is trying to back my theory ;)

AAAAHH, Chicago is deaths kinda town, blows my whole funkified vision, Now I really dont think Sharon Jones is singing with them and dont think there’s horns. Contract shmontract.

the only cool thing left to do is Television.

YES would be fantastic but Ive just thought up till now that’d be to good to be true, maybe not.
Maybe all those camp albums are still options, heres to hopin’

@George Oscar Bluth
attend a ZPZ show and take it in.

I have assumed they wont play Zappa for the same reasons and never miss ZappaPlysZappa or Project Object when they com to town. Im sure Gail gets a cut of everyone of those Vegas CDs.

Hey all -

Just wanted to jump in and say two things…

First, I’m in for trying to meet-up at the soundboard at setbreak on Friday. Not sure how we’ll find each other, but I’m hoping to see at least a few other Maiden shirts :)

Second, we just surpassed a new milestone… 14,500 visitors… TODAY! That is insane. This site was essentially started as a joke after a drunken bar conversation, and now this. So THANK YOU ALL for stopping by and commenting and all that. Totally floored.

P.S. This just in… Scroll up for a photo of the stage (from behind) and a sketch of the viewing platform.

when they first started this list w/ 99 great albums my top three were Sticky Fingers, Yellow Brick Road, and A Night at the Opera. queen went quick but then i lost my two hopes in the same day??!!!  bummmmeerrrr… I’m pullin for Exile or Electric Ladyland now…leaving Santa Monica Weds night!!  see you there!!!!

LOL @ the Rev Justito:

“many 1.0 non N()ew()bs getting a hotel cause they are getting up there in age”

OMG…you’re so right!  That’s me…when did it happen?  And WHYYYYYYYYYYY?????

Anyone else traveling from the Denver area changing the date they were scheduled to leave do to the weather.  I just moved to the area and not sure if I should be concerned with I-70 and heaps of snow thats in the forcast. Let me know if I’m making to big of a deal and should just leave Wednesday night as planned or move it to Tuesday night with an extra night to party in Vegas.

They’ve covered Life on Mars which is off of Hunky Dory.  I guess that doesn’t change anything you’ve said though . . .

CTA derailed!

That was one I was dreading.

I too wonder about tents etc.  I just purchased a tent that holds 6, and will be sleeping 4/5.  Will we have any room with my kick ass 97 Honda Civic there as well?  Lord knows us solid four will not all sleep well in my car.  But then again, if it is true that attendence is around 40K, and many 1.0 non N()ew()bs getting a hotel cause they are getting up there in age, perhaps they will have plenty of camping room.  I know camping is limited at Coachella, but lets not forget that Coachella has like 6 stages etc.

This is a great and beautiful and clean/well taken care of festival site and the weather is going to be perfect summer hot - sun and 80s during the day, 50s and desert cool in the evening.  For those of us that were at Coventry, this will be a fantastic weekend!

For those of you visting the desert for the first time, or SoCal for the first time, it’s hot and dry like an oven.  Do yourself a favor and stay well hydrated and lather on the sunscreen.  You do not want to get sunburned - the sun is strong here.

I’ve been for Coachella twice and am excited to go for Fest 8. I’m looking forward to whatever the band plays and would really like to see in no particular order any of the following:

Jimi Hendrix
Zep 1
King Crimson

Ziggy Stardust or Genesis would be very cool, also.

If anyone coming has an extra day Thurs or Mon and can make it, Joshua Tree is not too far of a trek from Indio and is worth the visit to spend the day to hike and check out the desest.  Some of my crew and I will be there Thurs afternoon to hike.

This has been a fun post to follow and countdown to this weekend.

I am confused.  Maybe this has already been addressed but exactly when did Gail Zappa stop being a giant you know what and allow Phish or any other band to profit off of Frank’s music?  In the past I have spoken directly with two former members of Frank’s bands, Ike Willis and Jimmy Carl Black along with the members of the bands they performed with.  They had nothing nice to say about Gail and her obsession with squashing anyone who profits off her late husband.  I am still in shock that Peaches made the cut on the Vegas cd.  I am sure Gail was paid handsomely for that.  Wasn’t Phish asked to stop playing Peaches by Gail in 99? I guess the fact that Fishman did a Zappa Picks CD means something positive but Fishman has also performed with one of the cover bands on Gail’s hit list.  I cannot see the boys playing Zappa and having to give Gail a cut of all DVD and CD sales.  Not likely especially since Dweezil is touring with Zappa Plays Zappa and trust me I have seen 150 Phish shows, Phish cannot pull off Zappa like Dweezil and his band can, bottom-line.  I have seen ZPZ do a lot of the stuff on Apostrophe, if you are interested in seeing Zappa played exactly how it should be attend a ZPZ show and take it in.

i have 2 tix + a camping pass i need to move.
i am camping & im a local, so i can meet you at the venue or in town.
i am asking 375$ , which is 60$ or so dollars less than the face value.

@Scott G

Your right, 300 sq ft is plenty of room(for my wife and I) and I may have exaggerated on my tent size(don’t we all), I just got it and am guessing at the dimensions.  I wasn’t using my head. But I could see someone with a large car and family needing more space. .

Anyhoot, thanks for the calming words, should be fine, hoping i will only be at camp 2% of the time anyway
oh, and to ever asked I got the dimensions from the camping FAQ on phishs website.

i posted that same theory on here and PT when there were 25 albums left - that the campgrounds were actually albums 9 through 15 and there will be a seperate final 8 adn it got no love -

glad to hear someone else has like thoughts to me -

I think the previous poster had gotten his info off the coachella website.  Phish is hosting this, not coachella, and on Phish’s site it says its car camping where normal coachella camping is not.  At a normal coachella fest, i guess from the pics ive seen and info i read that they make people haul their shit to the spot and set up rows of tents, also expecting alot more peole than we will have here.

Im expecting something like the gorge where you can just park your car farther away from your neighbor and claim the space you need.  Im sure we can jedi mind trick the parking guy also if needs be.  The whole point in driving for us was to take our setup, so im going to think positive, get there have a great time and hope to see some of you come by our “CamelHendge” Camp.

if you expect to fit anything more than one shade tent and a tent or two for sleeping at any festival then i want to know what festivals you have been to.  Bonnaroo is much much smaller and i still fit one shade tent and my normal tent into the area.  if you are trying to fit that much into your camping area i suggest you buy two camping passes and bring two cars.  Anything more than one shade tent per camping area is excessive.
