Introduction: The Phish Halloween Album Teaser (September 28th, 2009)

Today the Festival 8 site on Phish.com was updated with yet another teaser animation, only this time instead of teags sayg the location, they're teasing the Halloween cover album.

The new site features a haunted gallery of 99 albums, each a possibility for the musical costume, and each a possible victim of an unfortunate demise.

A handful of albums have already been killed off, and there should be a lot more killing over the next few weeks as the welcome card promises Phish will “play the last record left alive.”

Gotta admit I was pleased to see both of my top choices — Appetite for Destruction and Exile on Main Street — made the list. Figure Appetite is a long-shot but Exile could have a chance.

Place card for Phish Halloween album teaser

Though I doubt this will be quite as uproar-inducing as the Halloween map, it's sure to keep the Festival 8 buzz going strong. Plus it'll also give you a chance to study up on the remaining possibilities (rumor has it there will be 8 albums left when the fest begins) and get familiar with the material, whatever it may be.

WARNING: Spoilers & speculation below. Proceed at your own risk.

Update: The Grateful Living (September 29th @ 12:11 am)

I'm sure this means nothing, but one eagle-eyed fan has noticed that the Grateful Dead are listed as the “Grateful Living” in the xml config file that's driving the gallery. Hmmm… certainly wouldn't mind if American Beauty is “the last record left alive.”

Update: The Grateful Living Part 2 (September 29th @ 2:41 am)

There's a comment below about the Grateful Dead thing pointing out that the word “living” is used in the xml file to denote albums that are still in the mix. I realized that, but in this case it's not just the <stateofbeing> node that says living, but the <title> node as well.

That said, the reader's comment opened my mind up to a much more likely theory. Someone did a search and replace on that xml file, replacing all occurrences of “dead” with “living” — only they didn't select match case — and so the “Grateful Dead” became the “Grateful living.” Note also the lowercase “l” which I incorrectly noted as an uppercase “L” above.

So in effect, I'm still sure it means nothing… other than that speculating on Phish teaser animations is a great way to waste time.

Update: The Grateful Living Part 3 (September 29th @ 1:36 pm)

The Grateful Dead are now listed correctly in the .xml file. Case closed.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 10:36 pm)

Born to Run Languedoc

Strange things are afoot in the haunted gallery, as a number of album covers have started to get a Phish-themed makeover.

  • Phish are in the sardine can on Hello Nasty
  • The hot dog vendor on Pretzel Logic is sporting a viking hat
  • The Boss is playing a Languedoc
  • Trey and Page are moving a keyboard on Moving Pictures
  • T-Rex is now T-rey
  • Tom Petty is wearing a Phish shirt
  • Mike Gordon has joined the Ramones (added 10/7)
  • Rage Against the Machine is now Page Against the Machine (added 10/9)
  • Fishman is on the cover of Exile on Main Street (added 10/10)
  • Ghost in the Machine is now Story of the Ghost in the Machine (added 10/15)
  • AC/DC Back in Black is now AC/DC Bag (added 10/15)
  • Page is in the rearview mirror on the Minutemen album (added 10/16)
  • Fishman's head has been added to one of the Electric Ladyland ladies (added 10/16)

Just as it was starting to feel really repetitive, this is a great twist to keep things interesting.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 11:36 pm)

Original Blind Faith album cover

A commenter below just inquired if anyone noticed that a “new album” had been added to the gallery

Well it's a new album cover, but not a new album. That's the original cover image from Blind Faith's self-titled debut. Rumor has it the naked young girl is Ginger Baker's daughter, but whoever it is she didn't make the cut. The cover was banned in the USA where it was sold with the “bland, but shopper-friendly, band photo.”

Update: Album YouTube Links (October 7th @ 3:23 pm)

Well this is interesting. Some of the albums in the xml config file have been updated to include YouTube links.

I'll give you one guess how many albums got the special treatment…

  1. AC/DC, Hells Bells from Back in Black
  2. Aerosmith, Sweet Emotion from Toys In The Attic (by Gordon/Kottke)
  3. Arcade Fire, Wake Up from Funeral
  4. David Bowie, Oh You Pretty Things from Hunky Dory
  5. David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust from Five Years Live
  6. Led Zeppelin, Going to California from Zeppelin IV
  7. The Band, Up On Cripple Creek from The Band
  8. Clash, Clampdown from London Calling

I sure hope these aren't the finalist because they seem to have forgotten GNR :)

Update: Festival 8 Numerology (October 7th @ 7:17 pm)

Just came across some interesting numerology observations from PTer Sixtwenty294.

8 ball
  • Moving Pictures is Rush's 8th album
  • Escape is Journey's 8th album
  • Kiss Alive II is Kiss's 8th album
  • Tonight's the Night is Neil Young's 8th album
  • Goodbye yellow brick road is Elton John's 8th album (including a live album)
  • Hot Rats is Frank Zappa's 8th album (including comilations) Thx Jeff G.

Plus, they changed 8 album covers — Blind Faith, T.Rex, Springsteen, Beastie Boys, Ramones, Steely Dan, Rush, and Tom Petty. And as noted above, 8 albums have videos.

That's a whole lot of eights. Nice work Sixtwenty294.

Update: Albums with 8 Songs (October 8th @ 12:11 am)

Got some more 8's thanks to a comment from Bryan Lasky — the albums with 8 songs

  • Boston | Boston
  • Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
  • Black Sabbath | Paranoid
  • Metallica | Master Of Puppets
  • Led Zeppelin | IV (Zoso)
  • Pixies | Come On Pilgrim
  • Van Morrison | Astral Weeks
  • Television | Marquee Moon
  • Leonard Cohen | I'm Your Man (eliminated)
  •

Update: YouTube Links Part 2 & 8 Letter Names (October 8th @ 4:55 pm)

A few things to note here.

First, the mis-linked Arcade Fire and Clash videos from yesterday were updated in the xml. Plus, a bunch of additional video links were added some time today. These include…

  1. Frank Zappa, Cosmik Debris from Apostrophe
  2. Led Zeppelin, Misty Mountain Hop from Zeppelin IV
  3. Metallica, Master of Puppets from Master of Puppets
  4. Minutemen, Jesus And Tequila from Double Nickels On The Dime
  5. Nirvana, Lithium from Nevermind
  6. Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb from The Wall
  7. Radiohead, Everything In Its Right Place from Kid A
  8. Rush, YYZ from Moving Pictures
  9. Violent Femmes, Blister In The Sun from Violent Femmes
  10. Yes, I've Seen All Good People from The Yes Album

Next, if you've been enjoying the numbers game and were miffed that there were 10 new videos and not 8, there's a comment from Lorenzo below that I think you'll like — it's the artists on the list with 8 letter names

  • Bob Dylan
  • Bob Seger
  • Brian Eno
  • Firehose
  • Pavement

Update: Electric Ladyland Album Cover (October 8th @ 8:13 pm)

Official Electric Ladyland album cover
Original Electric Ladyland album cover
Linda Eastman Hendrix Experience Alice in Wonderland

Here's an update for the dudes in the front row, and this one actually is riveting.

The official Electric Landyland album cover (left) has been replaced with the original UK cover (center) featuring a harem of late sixties babes. Once again, banned in the USA and elsewhere.

Notably, Hendrix didn't want this cover or the blurry red and yellow mugshot. Instead he'd requested they use a Linda Eastman photo (right) of the Experience sitting with some kids on the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park. Given a vote, I'd have chosen the babes.

Update: Links to Album Streams (October 9th @ 12:52 pm)

For your listening pleasure, I've stated linking up some of the albums below to free, legal streams on Grooveshark. Unfortunately most of their playlists are incomplete or have tons of duplicates, so you basically need to create each one by hand which is time consuming.

That said, if anyone's feeling ambitious and wants to take on an album or two it'd be greatly appreciated. Just shoot me an email or post a comment with the playlist link.

Update: Fall Tour Dates Announced (October 9th @ 10:32 am)

Nothing to do with albums or 8's, but Fall Tour Dates have been announced.

Update: Video Links Part 3 (October 9th @ 1:30 pm)

Got another handful of additional video links that were added some time today. These include…

  1. Blind Faith, Can't Find My Way Home from Blind Faith
  2. Genesis, In the Cage from Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  3. Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced from Are You Experienced
  4. King Crimson, Talking Drum from Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. Van Morrison, Cyprus Avenue from Astral Weeks

Update: Albums with Horns (October 13th @ 12:31 am)

The rumor mill is rapidly churning with the notion that there will be horns at Festival 8, presumably for the musical costume. Here's a list of albums you might be hearing if that rumor pans out…

  • Curtis Mayfield | Superfly Soundtrack
  • Chicago | The Chicago Transit Authority
  • David Bowie | Ziggy Stardust
  • Frank Zappa | Apostrophe
  • Frank Zappa | Hot Rats
  • Michael Jackson | Thiller
  • Miles Davis | A Tribute To Jack Johnson
  • Pink Floyd | The Wall
  • Radiohead | Kid A
  • Steely Dan | Pretzel Logic
  • T.Rex | Electric Warrior

  • The Band | The Band (aka Brown Album)
  • The Clash | London Calling
  • The Police | Ghost in the Machine

Meanwhile, I'm generally averse to Hitler but the video above cracks me up every time so I'm just embedding to avoid having to go to YouTube — and for the 3 people who still haven't seen it.

Update: Mike's Hotline Hint & more (October 13th @ 11:15 pm)

A few things to report, aside from the fact that CCR, ZZ Top, and the Ramones were killed off today.

First, Mike's hotline is offering a very Gordonesque “hint” at the Halloween album — singing a line from the chorus of the Go-Gos Out Lips Are Sealed. Personally I prefer the Hilary / Haley Duff version. Hear Mike for yourself at 212-330-9092.

Added 10/14 @ 5:45 pm Lots of message board chatter that lips could be a thinly veiled Stones reference.

Added 10/19 @ 8:23 pm “Our lips are sealed” is a lyric in the song Elevation by Television. Coincidence?

Second, I've started a gallery of Festival 8 posters that's already got great art by folks like AJ Masthay, Jamie Huntsman, and Not Pollock.

Finally, I'm doing a Series II Page bobblehead giveaway. This one features Page as The Chairman of the Boards, my favorite of all the bobbles so far.

Update: Phish Festivalography on Sirius (October 14th @ 12:10 am)

Not sure if I'm late to the game on this but I just got wind of a cool sounding show on Sirius called “Phish Festivalography.” It's a four part series starting Thursday the 15th at 9:00 pm Eastern (with replay at 2 am).

Hosted by Jonathan Schwartz from “Gone Phishin',” the exclusive series will cover Phish's festival history in words and music. Sounds promising.

Update: Miner's Case for Ziggy Stardust (October 14th @ 3:00 pm)

Spiders from Mars Fleece

Mr. Miner over at Phish thoughts has made the case for Ziggy Stardust:

For the elaborate theatrics and space-aged costumes alone, Ziggy Stardust would make a superb spectacle for the Halloween set. But beyond the glamorous show this album could provide, the music and lyrics of Bowie’s record fit perfectly with Phish’s place in time.

Read Miner's full post for more.

In other news, Zeppelin IV was just eliminated! Kinda figured that one would stick around for a while but alas, it's gone.

Update: The Album Elimination Set (October 14th @ 5:15 pm)

Got what I think might be a fun concept that revolves around the premise / rumor that there will be 8 albums left at Festival time.

Imagine you have just woken up from a dream. In that dream you were at Festival 8 and the band threw a major curve-ball 2nd set Friday, eliminating albums by playing 6 covers plus a cover encore — one from each of the 7 albums NOT being played.

So for example, in my dream it might look something like this:

  1. Detroit Rock City (Kiss)
  2. Communication Breakdown (Zeppelin)
  3. Poem 58 (Chicago)
  4. Counting Out Time (Genesis)
  5. Every Little Thing She Does (Police)
  6. Rip this Joint (Stones)
  7. Encore: Paradise City (GNR)

Stream a compilation of this fake set

Notably, I mixed and matched what I'd want them to play with what I think they'd play, which I think makes a huge difference, and is probably how a real dream would unfold.

Also note that I believe it's highly unlikely that they'll eliminate the final albums this way*, but given this concept, what would they play in your dream? Post a comment below once you've given it some thought.

* My insane hypothesis here, in case you were wondering, is that they will have a real life version of the haunted gallery. This will be designed by the guy who did the installations at Hampton and Bonnaroo. Throughout the first two days of the fest actors will come in and kill these larger than life covers with real chainsaws, hatchets, spurting blood, etc. The final 3 or so will be killed on stage in a theatrical experience immediately preceding the costume set Saturday.

Update: The Dead are Dead (October 14th @ 8:50 pm)

Crying Dancing Bear

Oh man, you step away for a few hours and they go and kill off the good ol' Grateful Dead. I didn't think for a second they were going to play this, but I wouldn't have complained. For those who were hoping for this one, the only solace I have to offer is this: Terrapin from Virginia Beach '98. Enjoy.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Bands with 4 Members (October 15th @ 12:40 am)

Here's an interesting observation from Greg below: all the bands phish has covered have been 4 members (at one point or another). If that trend continues, here's who you might hear:

  • Black Sabbath
  • Blind Faith
  • Boston (technically)
  • Genesis (v1.0)
  • Kiss
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Metalica
  • Modern Lovers
  • Pink Floyd
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Television
  • The Clash
  • The Doors
  • The Pixies
  • U2
  • Van Halen
  • Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Greg goes on to jokingly note, “That's 16 bands left. 2 weeks left. 16 divided by 2 is 8!!!!!” Fascinating. Just added the Clash and there are now 17 bands in the list rendering Greg's joke humorless.

Update: Handicapping the Albums (October 16th @ 9:40 am)

I don't think anyone's actually keeping books, but Eric Wyman and Matt Dubno have been handicapping the remaining albums. Here are a few of their picks:

  • Sticky Fingers | Matt @ 20:1, Eric @ 3:2
  • Exile on Main Street | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 12:1
  • Moving Pictures | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 25:1
  • Hot Rats | Matt @ 12:1, Eric @ 75:1
  • Electric Ladyland | Matt @ 8:1, Eric @ 3:1

See more handicapping action at 99 Halloweens.

Update: The Campground Albums (October 16th @ 11:50 am)

So this latest rumor has been circulating a bit but the din finally got loud enough that I've decided to post it. People are now saying that there will be 8 campgrounds at Festival 8, one for each of the finalist albums. Here's the rumored list…

  1. David Bowie | Hunky Dory
  2. Genesis | The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway | SBD
  3. Jimi Hendrix | Electric Ladyland
  4. King Crimson | Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. MGMT | Oracular Spectacular
  6. Prince | Purple Rain
  7. Radiohead | Kid A
  8. Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street

I'd take it for what it is, a rumor, but that list pretty well thought out. As I'm sure is the case for most folks, there's a few of my favorites (Stones, Jimi, Genesis), a few I'm not so big on (Radiohead, MGMT), a few I could go either way on (Bowie, Prince), and one I've yet to hear (King Crimson).

Crowd favorite Ziggy Stardust is noticeably absent, leading some to speculate that they'll play a non-campground album. But I'm not so sure as that would mean they'd be playing an album that was previously eliminated, a concept that didn't go over so well with California on the teaser map.

Finally, I saw a great suggestion on another board — the band could go around the campsites late-night and serenade each with a performance of a few tunes from their respective albums. That's probably about the only thing that would make me question my hotel decision, but time will tell.

Update: Much on the Horizon at 8 (October 16th @ 4:40 pm)

Update: The Killer Album Theory (October 16th @ 6:20 pm)

Okay. Here's a theory (not mine) that's either totally obvious or totally out-there, or perhaps a little bit of both.

Let it Bleed Album Cover

The obvious part of the theory (or at least already been discussed here and there) is that the Halloween album is not actually on the list.

The out-there part is that the 100th album is actually the murderer — the one doing all the killing — and that album would be, pun intended, Let it Bleed… the Stones 8th album.

Look forward to your comments on this one.

Hat tip to Cassidy B. for the theory.

Update: Ryan Kerrigan's 8 Balls, David Welker Scratchboard (October 17th @ 5:49 pm)

Ryan Kerrigan Festival 8 Ball

Just added some great stuff to the Festival 8 poster gallery including a set of hand-painted 8 balls by Ryan Kerrigan and an incredible scratchboard piece by David Welker (who also did the Rift cover).

If this is any indication of the type of stuff people will be slinging at the Festival, I might just need an extra suitcase.

Nice work gents.

Update: Pictures at an Exhibition (October 18th @ 11:16 am)

A few followup thoughts to the 100th album theory have emerged in the comment thread below, including one comment from ben who suggests Alice Cooper's 1971 album Killer as the 100th album, noting also that Alice is playing in town on the 30th.

ELP Pictures at an Exhibition

Second, and perhaps more intriguing, is this comment from stealingtime about ELP's 1971 album Pictures at an Exhibition

I doubt they'd play this, as the album has hardly any guitar (listen here) but man does that album cover bear striking resemblance to the Phish gallery or what?

Update: Vendor Map of Festival Grounds (October 19th @ 5:30 pm)

Update removed. Sorry.

Update: Upper Playground / Sonic Living “Day 1” (October 19th @ 10:15 pm)

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8
Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Came across this link on PhishPosters.com tonight. I'm not familiar with either Upper Playground or Sonic Living, both of whom have logos on these, but someone on PhishPosters is guessing that these are Festival 8 laminate designs.

These aren't quite as cool as past laminates if that's the case, though there's plenty of cool stuff in the UP news feed like this brilliant photo gallery of an urban narcolepsy epidemic.

Update: 10:38 pm Interesting. There's a poster gallery on the Sonic Living site that includes these images, sans text. The guitar gun is by Jeremy Fish, the cityscape by Marco Zamora, and the bike by Sam Flores.

Despite the update, I'm still not sure what the examples above are supposed to be . Post a comment if you have any ideas.

Update: Seeking photos from Phish fans (October 21st  @ 1:18 pm)

Local Indio paper The Desert Sun is looking for great photos from past Phish festivals. See here for details and an email address to send pics.

Update: Festival 8 to be Filmed in 3D (October 21st  @ 2:04 pm)

3D glasses

I heard this rumor from a pretty reliable source last week, but this recent PT post seems to confirm it: Festival 8 will be filmed in 3D! Pretty sure that doesn't mean a simulcast, but it could mean a sweet ass IMAX film down the road along the lines of U2 3D or my other favorite band, the Jonas Brothers.

Update: Burble & Borealis (October 22nd @ 5:22 pm)

Here are two of the amazing interactive sculptures that might be melting your face at Festival 8…

Burble

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A spectacular, futuristic sculpture of helium-filled balloons packed with LEDs and infrared sensors that floats above spectators in response to infra-red signals and its immediate environment.

Borealis

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A mirage-like installation that glows with colours and ebullient patterns created in response to the competing and collaborative voices, music and screams of people nearby.

Update: Behold the Plasma Cutter (October 23rd @ 5:00 pm)

Here's some more neat stuff the likes of which you just might see at Festival 8. It's two amazing metal sculptures from the portfolio of San Francisco based Dan Das Mann. As you can see, he's not only a genius with the plasma cutter, but also knows a thing or two about melting faces.

Update: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings @ F8? (October 24th @ 10:30 pm)

Here's a rumor that, if true, has been of the better kept secrets of this whole affair.

As posted in this comment, word is Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will join Phish for the musical costume at Festival 8.

The video at right should give you a good idea of Ms. Jones's superb vocals and the Dap-Kings funk / soul musical stylings.

No complaints from this guy if this is legit, which I believe it be. Especially if it means an Exile on Main Street (or Let it Bleed) costume.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Colossal Testaments in Steel and Stone (October 25th @ 3:00 pm)

Here's a trio of large-scale sculptures from Rosanna Scimeca, another artist you might be seeing at 8. According to her site, Rosanna likes to “explore how the observer may interface, interact, and identify with her installations.” Yeah, I can give her a preview: they're going bug out.

Update: Pollock Halloween Mask + HeadCount Trivia Contest (October 26th @ 1:45 pm)

Today Jambands.com posted information about a Pollock Halloween mask to be available at the WaterWheel table gallery throughout Festival 8. Plus, HeadCount will be running a trivia contest and the grand prize winner will get an uncut sheet of masks with a  one-of-kind Pollock doodle.

Sample trivia question: “What town does Trey Anastasio, John Popper of Blues Traveler and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors all hale from?”

Pollock Festival 8 Teaser

There's also the recently surfaced image at right, which I believe to be a teaser for a Pollock Festival 8 poster, though I'm not 100% on that.

Poster or not, can't wait to see the mask! In the mean time, here's a growing Festival 8 poster gallery.

Update: Stage Photo & Viewing Platform Sketch (October 26th @ 6:45 pm)

Today Twitter user @BathtubGym posted what I believe to be the first pic of the stage setup, as well as a sketch of the viewing platform for the Dan Das Mann installation.

I'm sure I'll say this ten times over the next 2 days, but I can't believe I just got MORE excited.

Update: Festival 8 to be Simulcast Live on Sirus (October 26th @ 9:54 pm)

This just in: all 8 sets of Festival 8 including the musical costume and acoustic set will be simulcast live on JamOn, channel 17 on SIRIUS!!!

Not a subscriber? Good news… you can sign up for a free trial and hear the simulcast without spending a dime. Huge thanks to whoever is responsible for arranging this. Jam On!

Update: They Have Created Fire (October 27th @ 1:56 am)

If you're anything like me, you're somehow riveted by fire — and you'll definitely be making it a point to see this six-pack fire artists rumored to be appearing at Festival 8:

Update: Glitches, XML fun, & Gordon's Hotline (October 28th @ 1:18 pm)

The Wall

Looks like there was some sort of glitch in the album teaser on Phish.com for a bit when Apostrophe was killed — as the gallery was only showing living albums, and the Wall and Exile had gone missing. All seems back to normal now, though the Wall is indeed dead as seen at right.

Also appears that someone's having some fun with the xml file — with Michael Jackson changing to “Michael Jackson Is Alive“ and Yes changing to “Yes Yes Yes Yes.“ — but I'm not reading into either of those too much.

Speaking of having fun, Gordon's hotline (212-330-9092) has had two recent updates, the latest playing off the 100th album theories that are floating around.

And last but not least, I just checked into my flight for tomorrow. If anyone's on Southwest from Chicago at 12:35, hit me up for a free drink coupon. I'll be the dork carrying the poster tube.

Update: Jamtopia Meetup | Friday. Setbreak. Picnic Area. (October 28th @ 4:18 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

Okay, let's make this thing official.

After extensive reviews of the map and comments, I believe the best time and place to meet is setbreak on Friday at the picnic area. It's at the back of the concert field Page side.

That way if people want to hit the Honey Bucket or grab food or drinks or whatever it's all convenient.

Update: Get a FREE scoop of Ben & Jerry's (October 28th @ 5:24 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

I just got an email from Ben & Jerry's with some great news.

In addition to being huge fans of Jamtopia, Vermont's finest ice cream purveyors will be offering free scoops of Phish Food at Festival 8.

All you have to do is “particip8” in a social action with one of the charities at the WaterWheel booth (e.g. sign a petition, make a donation) to get your free delights.

Sweet.

Update: More Stage Photos (October 28th @ 6:25 pm)

Got some more stage pics, this time from Twitter user @briankarol:

I'm thinking they need more speakers!

Update: Festival 8 Wristband (October 29th @ 12:11 am)

Festival 8 wristband

I'm not sure if this is a staff wristband or just the standard issue, but either way it looks pretty sweet sauce. If the production values of this wristband are any indication this is really going to be one hell of a shindig.

Meanwhile, as I write this, Van Morrison and Zeppelin were killed off. Only 9 remain. Can't get there soon enough.

Update: Festival 8 Shout-out on Conan (October 29th @ 8:08 am)

Well this is surreal. Masterfully bearded Phish fan Rob Howard was in the Late Night crowd yesterday and got interviewed by Conan to “promote Phish.”

As you'll see when you watch the video, Conan had a little something extra planned to help get the word out about Festival 8.

Props to Rob for representing Phish — and the great state of Illinois :)

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Finally on My Way (October 29th @ 10:00 am)

Well I'm just about to take off for the airport. This has been an amazing 30+ days tracking the album teaser and I'm almost sad to see it end. Thank you all for your awesome participation: coming up with crazy numerology, alerting me to updates, and just waxing philosophical in the comments.

As soon as I land I'll start up a new post with updates and recaps from the Festival. Hope to keep the great comments going there, so I'll be having a giveaway — a little something that's sure to light up any room. I think you'll like it.

Update 7pm: New Festival 8 Recap post is live.

Update: Phish to Play Exile on Main Street (October 31th @ 3:00 pm)

The Phishbill is out and it's been confirmed, Phish will be dressing up as the Rolling Stones and covering Exile on Main Street tonight.

More coverage on the way at the Festival 8 Recap post. Hope to see you there.

2033 Comments so far

@zzyzx (after the freeway exit!?sweet)

“Now since every last one of the campground albums doesn’t really have a hit or has a song Phish have played (except for Electric Ladyland)

I am understanding you to say all the camp albums do not contain a hit song and have a tune Phish has covered?
There are several camp albums with Hits(bowie, prince, stones) and I was not aware they ever covered a Genisis,Crimson or radiohead song(but could be wrong)

I think I just misunderstood, but want to ‘get’ your theory.

Camping is always a matter of the person parking your vehicle. If they understand that there needs to be room between vehicles, it all works out. If they sandwich everyone in, you will be sleeping in your car.

On this note - They have NEVER allowed cars into the campground at this location before, so hopefully it will be phish staffers who handle the parking!

Just be good neighbors and it will all work out, share the space, share the groove, and be good phamily.

Last note - I noticed a LOT of kids (As in the under 18 set) on tour this summer, so party hard - but please watch out for the little ones.

———————————————-
off topic but is anyone else concerned with the campsites only being 10x30 ? I think my tent alone is almost 10x20!! Im hoping thats not including the spot were your car goes. Are they just assuming youll sleep in your car? Im sure it will all work but let me know if youve heard any more details.
——————————————————

god i hope its bigger…. where did you see this?  I have 2 shade tents that are 10x10 each and all of our normal tents, need room for tables and chairs etc, if your car is supposed to fit in that space too they are on crack.  Please say its not as tight as this…....

@iHeardtheOceanSing

Not sure if those numbers are correct since I haven’t seen the campground specs, but if you can’t get comfortable on 300sqft of land, then you brought too much stuff.  Lighten the load, buddy.

P.S.  A 10x20 tent isn’t a tent.  It’s a small home.

OK there’s a tiny bit of wishful thinking here but this just came to me. Tomorrow, say they eliminate CTA, Apostrophe, and Double Nickles - none of which I could see the band playing due to arrangements (CTA) or obscurity.

That leaves, you guessed it, 16 albums left. Now since every last one of the campground albums doesn’t really have a hit or has a song Phish have played (except for Electric Ladyland), maybe those are the runner ups. So Wednesday, they declare the finalists and runner ups, making the final 8:

Born to Run
Ziggy Stardust
Zeppelin I
Thriller
The Wall
Marquee Moon
Astral Weeks
The Yes Album

Tell me that wouldn’t be a great final 8 that would get people excited to see which one gets chosen. Maybe Zappa or CTA could be subbed in for Morrison or Television, but this is my post so it’s my rules.

@tim from GardenGrove
“of course they would bring in guests to help out. the giant country horns played a part on the remain in light cover.”

Thanks, I did not know that, definitely makes
~ Sharon Jones singing Chicago with Horns ~a possibility. Now that would be a party.

10x30 is huge!!  its better than at coachella, only a 10x10

off topic but is anyone else concerned with the campsites only being 10x30 ? I think my tent alone is almost 10x20!! Im hoping thats not including the spot were your car goes. Are they just assuming youll sleep in your car? Im sure it will all work but let me know if youve heard any more details.

Festival 8 Flash Phreeze, second song of halloweeen set!!!!!

@jphardy

Right! Stevie has been left off. Been kinda surprised by that all along.

Give me Songs in the Key of Life and I can die happy.

But I really don’t think it’s a 100th album.

@ jphardy if the 100th album is stevie, he’s got pretty good aim for a blind man.

please kill king crimson, chicago, television, and yes immediately

of course they would bring in guests to help out. the giant country horns played a part on the remain in th light cover.

If you’re reading this Phish, just to let you know there’s not a single record left on this list that I would be disappointed in hearing you play.  Every single one left would be freaking awesome.  Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan I can’t wait. I seriously can’t remember the last time I was this excited, this is going to be one long ass party 100 hour long epic party. With emphasis on “party”.

The one artist that’s truly been left off this list is stevie wonder. Not a single album on the list… so if there is a 100th album killer… i’m hoping it’s a stevie album… maybe innervisions or to go along with the last album left ALIVE…Songs in the Key of Life…

Zep 1

Zepp all the way….

But I’d also be happy with Hendrix, Minutemen, Floyd, Zappa, or Bowie…

I’m just super-relieved they axed U2….I would’ve been SOOO disappointed.

I didn’t know that the youtube links were active on the phish.com album gallery now. I’ve known that there have been links in the xml for a while now, I just didn’t realize they actually worked in the gallery. I accidentally clicked on The Minutemen and I got to see a video for “Jesus and Tequila”. Calexico does a great version of that song.

If you subtract the 7 albums that were on the map, heres whats left.

Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
Chicago | The Chicago Transit Authority
David Bowie | Ziggy Stardust
Frank Zappa | Apostrophe
Led Zeppelin | Zeppelin I
MGMT | Oracular Spectacular
Michael Jackson | Thriller
Minutemen | Double Nickels On The Dime
Pink Floyd | The Wall
Television | Marquee Moon
Van Morrison | Astral Weeks
Yes | The Yes Album

theres also the possibility that the album IS one of the campground albums, so i dont have a clue anymore.

Granted my computer at work can’t handle the Phish.com album gallery, I think the only truly dead album (if you go by Zombieland rules) is Pork Tornado.  More than a double pump for sure.

@Boris

Dirty Little Girl is totally rockin!?
Phish could have done Elton serious justice, but that’s moot now.
Exile is the front runner for sure now.  I’m so so about this as I think its not very dynamic, but I do think Phish could make it so.

Cosmic Debris is actually on Apostrophe but good call on Overnight Sensation.  The solos on 50-50 are the most Phish-like sounds in Zappa’s entire catalouge.  I Am The Slime would be sick.  I also remember seeing Overnight Sensation as a 2for1 CD with Apostrophe on the same disc.  They are both such short albums I wonder if they would consider playing both.

I cant wait to find out the truth about the Sharon Jones rumor. She can wail, check out their album, naturally.  They even make Woody Guthrie sound funky.  Im suprised to see there has been no play on the ladyland/landlady, but the ladies will have to do.  go ziggy!

T. Rex gets nailed.  Shoot, woulda been fun.

Why not Kid A? If they can perform Remain In Light, they can perform this.

Whats up with the 100th album theory??
Is it that they are going to reveal one more album?
If that is the situation, then I will make a rock solid call on an album that I was very surprised was not on this list.
OVERNITE SENSATION FRANK ZAPPA
Come on…Zappa is one of the boys biggest influence.
Moving to Montana
Cosmic Debris
Cam Brillo
Zombie Woof
Dinah-Moe

I would also like to ad why I dont think the festival teaser map bringing California back does not = bringing dead album back. California was hoisted off by air-balloons while the other states had more permanent destruction.  These albums all die the same way so Im not expecting a zombie album but anything could happen.

@Mr.Palmer195
I agree, I was saying the idea of Off The Wall being off the wall is a corny idea, not that the album is corny. I totally respect MJs music and have an open mind about hearing anything. The Halloween set is such a small part of the whole weekend.. I just think they have a better sense of humor than the Off the Wall gag would entail.

@Todd Levy

I’d like to say, before I forget…  THANKS FOR RUNNING THIS THREAD!!!  So much fun. Great way to pass the days until the fest.

@Everyone Else Here

It’s been a joy reading all of your posts.  The imaginative theories that some of y’all have come up with over the past few weeks have been gripping good reads.  Most of them are patently bogus and way far-fetched, but still fun to read.  Better than the latest Dan Brown novel.  And, really, I don’t mean that as an insult.  Heck…I’ve been calling for Maiden, Nugent and Blue Öyster Cult and they’re not even on the list.  Just havin’ some fun shootin’ the shit with some good people who like good music.

Have a blast at 8 everybody!

T.Rex is extinct.  what a bunch of garbage

T Rex Gone…. one less i have to bone up on

And we’ve made it into the teens…..Adios, T. Rex!  19 to go.

While I don’t see it happening, them covering the Yes Album would be fucking awesome.

T.Rex is extinct.  No surprise here, I haven’t seen any post in favor of it…

Today was supposed a day without fatalities… if you like patterns ;-)

Go Lamb!  Seriously, give it a listen… Revitalize it (check IT out)!

T-Rex is extinct.

and the there were 19.  The sharon jones thing (and I hope it’s true) points me to exile or thriller out of the albums on the list. But I think if the 100th album theory turns out to be true it would be unreal if Let it bleed turned out to be that album…they would kill it. 4d 9h 22m 8s

“T.Rey” is gone- it is a slaughter this morning!

pretty glad goodbye yellow brick road bit the dust

dirty little girl sounds just like benny and the jets

T Rex OUT!!!

if they play the lamb
whos gonna be the slipperman?
tom marshall?

counting out time~

And now Electric Warrior has gone the way of the dinosaur…

Someone banged a gong and T.REy is gone.

whoa its gonna be the lamb!

hairless heart is gonna be awesome!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g58VCSyY5lU
pages piano on the cage!!
better get some mescale

wow, these are diein’ quick today. T.Rex, just saw a documentry on TV Sat. night, got my hopes up, but didnt mean a thing I guess.

Ok to all you 1.0’s out there giving he ll to 3.0.  I am a 1.0 and I remember feeling like an outcast because I didnt have dreads and Patch work.  Guess what 16 years later I still dont have dreads so i say let the new kids enjoy everything we got to enjoy and who cares if the dont know every little thing about the band honest i have a feeling that the people that are giving 3.0 kids he ll are kids that only listen to PHISH get a clue and dont be so negative.  To all those kids saying they will walk out if they play MGMT well guess what, people said the same about the talking heads when it was rumored and that is the sickest halloween set EVER. to everyone just be happy that our fav band is back in th best way and be happy just be F N happy its a phish show not the lottery.  I am happy with anything and everything I guess it is just a kye thing

I’d be happy with anything on the wall, except Bruce.  Hoping for Jimi though
Didn’t mean to take up all your sweet time
Give it right back one of these days
daylight savings later that night,  just saying

thanks Todd

With Sticky and GYBR now with the axe, unfortunately the leaked final 8 is looking pretty definite.  I am still pulling really hard for one of them to get killed to throw us all for a loop again, but its not looking great.

With that said I am still pulling for Hunky Dory.  Oh! You Pretty Things should be in Phish rotation anyway.  Plus as far as the interview with Trey goes, I feel like they were working on Ziggy, Trey calls Page, and they switch it over to the other Bowie album, Hunky.  It would be fantastic.

Obviously, Exile and Ladyland are also up there.

And another problem with them playing MGMT that I havent heard on this forum but my brother told me, is that I think it will be really bad for that band.  I agree it would be a tragedy that they play it, although I enjoy the album, but think about this: Phish will play it sooo much better than those 2 geeks ever could.  Hey MGMT, you know your up and coming album?  Yeah, watch us bring it to a place you can NEVER reach.  Something to think about.

Anyway, thanks for the thread, its been a blast, couldnt be more excited for the festival.  I hope to run into fellow posters there, until then!

I haven’t taken Purple Rain seriously in this process at all - they used to play that song every freaking night for a while and it was typical terrible Fishman butchery. The comic relief portion of the show. I guess it was Summer ‘94. They were doing a lot of a capella Freebird too. We got kind of burnt on the Purple Rain joke but the local crowd always seemed to get a kick out of it.

I guess Purple Rain might be OK..maybe…

But please no Kid A, Genesis or KC. I just tried to choke down Kid A again and I have no idea what some of you see in this record.

t rex gone too.  3 days left. let the mass murdering begin

I’m devastated by the axing of London Calling.
If it ends of being King Crimson, I am going to find Trey and piss in his ear to see how he likes it.
Just kidding.
But I seriously do not want to hear KC.

There will be 8 albums left when the campgrounds open, the 7 that are on the map from the list of 99 and the 100th ‘Killer’ album. They will kill those 7 throughout the week and reveal the 100th album on Sat. I have to go with ‘Let it Bleed’ as the 100th album.

Elton John is gone, goodbye.  The “fake” map still holds true

Note that by killing albums today (the 26th), they broke the “no murders every 8th day” rule.

Just an observation.  There ARE no rules!

@iHeardtheOceanSing

Trey said himself he would absolutley consider doing a Micheal Jackson album.  Off the Wall is not as corny as Thriller and actually has some great guitar and keyboard on it.  Not saying it would be my first choice but its defenitly think they could rock a few tracks this one.  Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough, Rock with You, and Burn This Disco Out, especially.  anyway whatever they play im pumped.  Best thing is to have an open mind about everything.

all in all its just another brick in the wall

The only horse I still have in the race is Ziggy Stardust…it seems since I posted my list everyone on it is getting killed pretty quick! Maybe I am the killer!

Seriously they are going to suprise us all and it will be great! I can’t wait for 8!!!! See everyone soon. Any solids on a meetup?

@Zegonite - “I wish I could be one of these 3.0 whipper-snappers myself”

Age is just a number man, I’m a 3.0 and I turned 47 in May, whipper-snapper indeed.  :)

See you all there!!!!

We can figure it out if we just keep posting here.  I know we are close.  We just need more speculation.  Obviously this will play out in a very logical and straight forward manner.  This is a serious matter, no funny business.

BTW - Contracts ARE signed.

Read between the lines.

@Jeff:  “If he is the Boss, then I quit.”

Haha, funny!  I can appreciate the Boss for what he is but don’t want to hear that album on Saturday.  As in, THIS SATURDAY, wow…it’s finally here!

here’s why they wouldnt do the Minutemen:

i don’t think they would cover an album in which they humiliate the original artist by playing their songs better, tighter, and more interestingly than they did.

i really do believe that.  so forget the minutemen

Now that elton is gone—

Jimi, Bowie and Bolan got more of a chance—and that is what I prefer.

This sharon jones talk could be to sing the Flow and eddie parts on Electric Warrior. (eventhough The Slider would be a better pick)

Or how about Sharon Jones singing Chicago? I dunno is it really Phish covering the album if there’s a guest vocalist? Kinda like cheating so Im not convinced shes singing the Halloween album.

Goodbye, yellow brick road

holy shit. Elton lies bleeding in my hands. Oh well, woulda been sweet , a little slow in the middle though.

Yes I will be happy with whatever they play, and no they don’t owe me anything!

I will, however, express the unpopular view that I agree with a previous post that described Exile on Main Street as somewhat of a mediocre rock album.

It IS a good match for Phish as a group and it is well within the genre that we could expect them to excel at - but it is NOT the White Album, Loaded, The Who, or the Talking Heads material quality. The best tune on the album - loving cup - has been done VERY WELL by Phish, and they would do well to leave it at that.

The Lamb is musically beautiful and fun, but too predictable. We know they know it, I don’t think they will show it.

MGMT is too happening now - they are active up and coming band and I don’t think it would make sense.

Kid A - Rocking and weird - but very obscure.

Due to the nature of the festival, I think they are going to be more mainstream this time around, which is why I think Exile, MJ, or even Prince stand the best chance of survival. I don’t see them throwing something too obscure at us with 70,000 people who have no clue what is going on.

BUT WHO THE HELL KNOWS! That is one of the BEST things about the band - they ALWAYS keep us guessing.

Zero Disappointment with whatever it will be - good festival to all

@Mr.Palmer195
“you think they would bring in a singer to cover anyone else?”

Yes, YES.

No Stones if map was right, phew.
Off The Wall, really? I mean the boys can be corny sometimes but not that corny.

P.S.
I went back to my original handle, iHeardtheOceanSing, due to a joint class action law suite: Plantiffs Hoover & Electrolux et al. LLC. vs. Me

oww haha axe in the crotch for sticky fingers. I’ve been fearing this day for a while.

@j-rock
pretty funny.  careful when you joke like that, people might think you are serious.

So sad about Sticky Fingers. Can’t you hear me knockin’ would’ve been incredible. As for this Sharon Jones thing and this Let it Bleed thing, I’m assuming she would sing Merry Clayton’s part in Gimme Shelter and the Dap Kings would play horns and back up when needed? That’s the only thing that makes sense. I also like this “Off the Wall” thing, she would also have to be called in to sing these vocals. Eventhough there is zero chance they play MGMT, I don’t think the albumis bad, in fact, for a newer album it is quite good. Them playing it would throw everyone off but if you give it a listen, you can see how they could make it reallllly good, talk about dancing. Now that Sticky Fingers is gone though, let’s all pray they choose electric ladyland!!!! please!!

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road…No seriously…goodbye

FINAL ANSWER AGAIN, minutemen’s album “double nickels on the dime”

I just listened to as much as I could stomach of the Elton John album and I pray they don’t play this album. It’s just so lame. I will also be heading to the sports bar if they play the Bruce Springsteen Album. If he is the Boss then I quit!!! Pretty much anything else looks pretty good to me at this point.

As we get closer, I am firmly convinced the 100th “Killer” album is the costume.  It just seems to fit too well.  I just can’t see the boys doing something so far out of their element (GYBR, MGMT, Ziggy).

I’m betting on Houses of the Holy or Let it Bleed…personally I’d love to see Zeppelin, maybe thanks to Trey dedicating GTBT to “The Man in the Dragon Pants” at my first show.

On my way to work this morning, was listening to Buried Treasure (Tom Pett’s radio show on Sirius Deep Tracks) and Soul Survivor came on.  I thought that was cool b/c 1) it’s on Exile, 2) Sticky got knocked off today, and 3I’m a huge Stones junkie.  Definitely pulling for Exile!!

So staring at my fantasy Teams this morning I noticed something. Next weekend is week 8 of the NFL season. Just sayin.

Acoustic Super Bowl Shuffle Sunday! Bears!

Flying out wed. night, see all you wooks out there!!! BTW Please no KiD A…If you’re trying to have a dance party, I just don’t see how this album fits in….That being said, whatever they play I’ll be happy!!!

@ matt chicago

who is gonna sing it?  that is why they brought in Sharon Jones. you think they would bring in a singer to cover anyone else?

@Jb
Ive heard that also.  Makes sense.

I must be honest.  I’m disappointed by the 7 campground albums and I pray that MGMT, as rumored, isn’t the eighth.  But after seeing Sticky and the Clash get axed recently I’m sure the map is legit.  My hope is that at the start of the fest it’s those 7 plus a few more alive (Elton especially) and the possible “100th album” to keep the mystery.  I regret reading that map.  Definitely spoiled it for me.  If it is those 7 only I’m pulling for Hunky Dory.

@andygump:

That’s exactly why you can count that out. They wouldn’t do the same trick twice. Or would they…

(Think Sicilian death scene in Princess’s Bride).

The last thing we expect is for them to do the same trick twice, so that’s exactly what they’ll do!  I still like the 100th mystery record showing up but then that’s not the one they play and there’s some death fight between them

NOOOO!!! Sticky Fingers AND Back in Black!?!?!?  What a rough day…

hopefully they’re still fucking with us (which I’m sure they are) a la taking Cali off the map.  If not, here’s to Ziggy!

It’s been 5 years!!!(8 really)

Listening to Television… just feels too much like another “Loaded.” It is a fantastic album but i think where the band has gotten to ... its gonna be more of a crowd pleaser, Marquis Moon is too esoteric.  That is unless they plan on breaking out the Wall in Cabo.

I’m going to be happy (they want me to be happy) no matter what gets played… I’m personally ruling MM out.  Speaking of “the Wall” ... I think its not got the right “party time” tone either… I was watching it on VH1 last night and man it is Sooooooo dark, nihilistic, breakdown.  Musically still stunning after all these years but by no means a party.

Oh Jesus, here it comes.  I knew it was only a matter of time before the crybabies who didn’t get their album would start bringing up California coming back.  If AYE? or London Calling comes back, RAD, but if that’s the case what was the whole point of the gallery?

Lamb/Marquee Moon.

~o

@JB

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings have not been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  They’ve only been a band since ‘96, which means they couldn’t even qualify.

Also, they are not a Chicago based band.  They are Brooklyn, through & through.

Just had to clear that up.

Wow, I go and get really busy at work and look what happens: all hell breaks loose on the Phish album-murder blog!

BTW, again, Todd, this is a great page.

@Mike from Rockville… I’m as shocked as you are about Sticky Fingers.

@PiNT… glad to see you turning around bout Kid A, and You’re right: they’re not going to play that… although my allegiance to Radiohead is going to cause me to do whatever I can to camp in that section.

@IHeardtheHooverSing… definitely up for a FOAM or a bowl hit.  Hit me up on my email (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) and we can exchange numbers or we can meet up somewhere particular at a particular time.

Wow, Sticky Fingers, London Calling, Brian Eno… Eno was my dark horse pick.  I’m going to have to go with Ziggy or Marquee Moon, 50/50.  I can’t really see any reason to believe the leaked map is bunk as the borealis was on there before anyone leaked info on the borealis, as well as spots for Pollock art, and crane booms for lighting… the bloody mary bar, etc.  You’d need CAD knowledge to fake that map and most of the engineers I work with are a bit tapped in the humor/practical joke department, if you know what I mean… although they DO love all the prog, haha!

Either way, even if it is Off The Wall, this thing is heating up to be one of the best memories in the making and I’m glad you’re all gonna help make it so.  Anyone else up for meeting for a brew (or ecoutrement), feel free to email me as well.

@-phunguy,

They are covering the new Umphrey’s album.  Vampire Weekend ARE playing Sunday at the 8. CONFIRMED!! I just talked to Rog and Pete (Mike C is gone…)and they confirmed that “Trey loves the shit outta those guys and feels it an honor to share the same venue with such precocious artists.”

I find this kind of snarky… like it somehow validates one persons opinions more then another because of when they got into phish.

> The Phish fan thing is a reflection of the time in history in the bands existance.

> 1.0 - before the 2000 ‘hiatus’
> 2.0 - 2002 to 2004 (after ‘hiatus’, before ‘breakup’
> 3.0 - After reuniting in 2009

Cut it out =P - Stop the labeling -

“Rehumanize yourself!”

“I am not a number, I am a free man!”

and in this my opinion is most relevant because I’ve been going to shows for a long time ;-)

Forbin and anyone else who is interested -
if it is MGMT, meet at the bloody mary bar.

and i dont want to hear any criticisms or insults, people. we’re all entitled to our opinons, and our tomato-based alcoholic beverages.

I bet ziggy stardust and zappa are the next to go

I actually think it’s funny that phans feel compelled to tout their grandfatherly phan status. I’m a 1.0’er myself (barely, saw my first show in ‘99) and I’m 29 yrs old as of last May- too damn old for my liking!!! I wish I could be one of these 3.0 whipper-snappers myself- ah the excitement of scratching the surface of the Phish phenomenon for the first time at 21 (before you’ve lost any hair, or have had any of your highest ambitions crushed no less), sigh… Remember also, more young fans = more pretty young ladies running around too, fine by me. ;) Is it ok for a guy on the verge of his 30’s to appreciate the eye candy?

Anyway, Have a good time young’uns, you’re as welcome as any of us!!! (Though I may still end up hating you if they play MGMT.)

@JB from Waitsfield, VT

hey man dumb guess, off the wall???
hey man did you know this

1:the 8th biggest selling album of all time is
the backstreet boys millenium

2: the backstreet boys are playing a show on Sunday November 8th 2009 weirdly enough acdc is playing a show in texas on that same day what a mystery

3 there are 4 backstreet boys if they were cloned there would be 8! weird

4.i herd a rumor from two different sorces the backstreet
have a combined 8 legs all together

5.the backstreet boys 8th tour called theUnbreakable
Tour i bet this is what trey felt like before he quit useing drugs

so the facts are here they are gonna play millenium by the backstreet boys!!!!!!

this is how retarted some phish fans are sounding
lol

quit with the mj
what ever jackson album they play will sound like crap
whos gonna sing as mike?

Dont forget that, they sucked out california in the middle of the annoucing of the festival.  so dont rule out ones that they killed off.  just my 2 cents

After all these 99 albums…After pouring thru endless rumors and albums for weeks now, I now believe fo sheez that the album is:
Off the Wall by Michael Jackson…No doubt.
1 = Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings have been confirmed by 2 sepatate sources as playing at 8 (btw they were inducted into R & R hall of fame in 2008)
2 = Rumors have had Hartswick practicing with Trey in Chicago….where the Dap Kings hang out and make music;
3 = Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings open their first tour in a while at Higher Ground on Nov. 20;
4 = Trey’s interview with Atlanta radio show a while back where he mentions that they chose album, started to learn it, and then called Page and they agrred to bag it (ie Thriller)
5 = Radio interview question asked Trey if Thriller is still on the radar…Answer: “...Sure it’s on the radar..I mean “Off the Wall” is on the radar..”
6 = Off the wall is the 100th album which will remain alive at the end bc…duh…it was off the wall…
They’re assholes….Me wants Ziggy.
You heard it here first…Or on Phantasy tour///

sticky fingers just axed
21 to go phriends

@PiNT
”Exile really isn’t in the same league as, say, The White Album”

“And Oracular Spectacular is?”

Oh definitely not - and Exile is a better record than OS. Don’t get me wrong - if I were on a desert island I’d take Exile, of the two. But I’ve heard it a zillion times, and it seems a bit anticlimactic.

I still can’t believe they would actually play MGMT.

Clearly I don’t know a damn thing about what they want to play. That much has been proven in this endeavor.

They should play Genesis.

Cheers!

Electric Ladyland!
My dream would be the ultimate guitar virtuoso, Jimi Hendrix. Decades ahead of his time in guitar playing and his song writing is timelss.

The guitar would be great for Trey. Mitch Michell on drums, yeah Fishman would love playin that shit. Page could have a good time with Steve Windwood’s heavy organ. Mike might get bored. But FUCK! This is a true classic rock album.

They could do a good twist on the songs and all have a great jammablity. I’m hoping for the best!

There will be no side stage/opening act/ other bands.(period)
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, if true, will be on stage with Phish for the Costume.  I’m also pretty sure any album listed on that map will NOT be one that is chosen, so that was a spoiler of huge proportions.

@PiNT
“Why is anyone speculating it’s not one of the ‘choosen 8’?  Do you think they will play an LP that got killed?”

No, its because were assuming those 7 campground albums are eliminated ,the 8th being mgmt is just rumored which means the album is one one the remaining 22 besides the 7 camps. Which leaves 15 albums to choose from. We weren’t supposed to see the map, there will probably be 8 left Thurs. and without the map we would have gone to see the unknown 7 camps to reveal the 8th winning album.
Of those 15 Id like id like Marquee Moon but still think maybe GYBR or Electric Warrior.

I think it is hysterical that everyone wants to meet up and enjoy some FOAM when/if MGMT comes on.  I must admit…before googling I had to ask some friends who/what MGMT were…lots said “management…duh”.  I listened and was not excited…I will enjoying a FOAM or five with those who feel the same way….
Where are we meeting!!!???

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed, but AC/DC back in black is gone (someone may have already posted something as I’m typing this, so congrats, you beat me to it). Either way, I can’t wait to party down in Indio! Our group heads out on Tuesday @ noon for a 32-hour road trip from Wisconsin. I can honestly say I have not been this pumped for a festival in a long time.

As far as albums go, I was kind of upset to see ‘Boston’ slain so late in the game. The vocals would have been tough, but I can’t stop thinking bout the few times they covered Foreplay/Longtime around 1994. Good stuff.

Anyways, my top 3 ‘picks’ (as of 10/25/09 11:00 PM CST) that are left goes like…

3)The Wall- highly unlikely, but I’m a Floyd fan at heart.

2)Chicago Transit Authority- this just seems really likely to me, plus   I am a huge fan of the 7.10.1999 Bathtub Gin with a funky “I’m a Man” jam

1)Zeppelin I - I know..I know..i’ve seen plenty of objections to this because “they’ve heard a Good Times, Bad Times encore 6 times”..I just think Trey really wants to be Jimmy Page for Halloween, that’s it, that’s all. The album itself is great (in my opinion of course) and I think the boys would do it justice. If not, they might as well play MGMT so I can walk up to the Overlook and gaze at the surroundings.

As a final side note, I also see a Bowie, Zappa or Stones album as strong possibilities. Who knows, I could be wrong and it will not be any of the 6 I mentioned. Either way, I can’t wait to party down in Indio! (to reiterate my original point before the journey begins….)
