Introduction: The Phish Halloween Album Teaser (September 28th, 2009)

Today the Festival 8 site on Phish.com was updated with yet another teaser animation, only this time instead of teags sayg the location, they're teasing the Halloween cover album.

The new site features a haunted gallery of 99 albums, each a possibility for the musical costume, and each a possible victim of an unfortunate demise.

A handful of albums have already been killed off, and there should be a lot more killing over the next few weeks as the welcome card promises Phish will “play the last record left alive.”

Gotta admit I was pleased to see both of my top choices — Appetite for Destruction and Exile on Main Street — made the list. Figure Appetite is a long-shot but Exile could have a chance.

Place card for Phish Halloween album teaser

Though I doubt this will be quite as uproar-inducing as the Halloween map, it's sure to keep the Festival 8 buzz going strong. Plus it'll also give you a chance to study up on the remaining possibilities (rumor has it there will be 8 albums left when the fest begins) and get familiar with the material, whatever it may be.

WARNING: Spoilers & speculation below. Proceed at your own risk.

Update: The Grateful Living (September 29th @ 12:11 am)

I'm sure this means nothing, but one eagle-eyed fan has noticed that the Grateful Dead are listed as the “Grateful Living” in the xml config file that's driving the gallery. Hmmm… certainly wouldn't mind if American Beauty is “the last record left alive.”

Update: The Grateful Living Part 2 (September 29th @ 2:41 am)

There's a comment below about the Grateful Dead thing pointing out that the word “living” is used in the xml file to denote albums that are still in the mix. I realized that, but in this case it's not just the <stateofbeing> node that says living, but the <title> node as well.

That said, the reader's comment opened my mind up to a much more likely theory. Someone did a search and replace on that xml file, replacing all occurrences of “dead” with “living” — only they didn't select match case — and so the “Grateful Dead” became the “Grateful living.” Note also the lowercase “l” which I incorrectly noted as an uppercase “L” above.

So in effect, I'm still sure it means nothing… other than that speculating on Phish teaser animations is a great way to waste time.

Update: The Grateful Living Part 3 (September 29th @ 1:36 pm)

The Grateful Dead are now listed correctly in the .xml file. Case closed.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 10:36 pm)

Born to Run Languedoc

Strange things are afoot in the haunted gallery, as a number of album covers have started to get a Phish-themed makeover.

  • Phish are in the sardine can on Hello Nasty
  • The hot dog vendor on Pretzel Logic is sporting a viking hat
  • The Boss is playing a Languedoc
  • Trey and Page are moving a keyboard on Moving Pictures
  • T-Rex is now T-rey
  • Tom Petty is wearing a Phish shirt
  • Mike Gordon has joined the Ramones (added 10/7)
  • Rage Against the Machine is now Page Against the Machine (added 10/9)
  • Fishman is on the cover of Exile on Main Street (added 10/10)
  • Ghost in the Machine is now Story of the Ghost in the Machine (added 10/15)
  • AC/DC Back in Black is now AC/DC Bag (added 10/15)
  • Page is in the rearview mirror on the Minutemen album (added 10/16)
  • Fishman's head has been added to one of the Electric Ladyland ladies (added 10/16)

Just as it was starting to feel really repetitive, this is a great twist to keep things interesting.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 11:36 pm)

Original Blind Faith album cover

A commenter below just inquired if anyone noticed that a “new album” had been added to the gallery

Well it's a new album cover, but not a new album. That's the original cover image from Blind Faith's self-titled debut. Rumor has it the naked young girl is Ginger Baker's daughter, but whoever it is she didn't make the cut. The cover was banned in the USA where it was sold with the “bland, but shopper-friendly, band photo.”

Update: Album YouTube Links (October 7th @ 3:23 pm)

Well this is interesting. Some of the albums in the xml config file have been updated to include YouTube links.

I'll give you one guess how many albums got the special treatment…

  1. AC/DC, Hells Bells from Back in Black
  2. Aerosmith, Sweet Emotion from Toys In The Attic (by Gordon/Kottke)
  3. Arcade Fire, Wake Up from Funeral
  4. David Bowie, Oh You Pretty Things from Hunky Dory
  5. David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust from Five Years Live
  6. Led Zeppelin, Going to California from Zeppelin IV
  7. The Band, Up On Cripple Creek from The Band
  8. Clash, Clampdown from London Calling

I sure hope these aren't the finalist because they seem to have forgotten GNR :)

Update: Festival 8 Numerology (October 7th @ 7:17 pm)

Just came across some interesting numerology observations from PTer Sixtwenty294.

8 ball
  • Moving Pictures is Rush's 8th album
  • Escape is Journey's 8th album
  • Kiss Alive II is Kiss's 8th album
  • Tonight's the Night is Neil Young's 8th album
  • Goodbye yellow brick road is Elton John's 8th album (including a live album)
  • Hot Rats is Frank Zappa's 8th album (including comilations) Thx Jeff G.

Plus, they changed 8 album covers — Blind Faith, T.Rex, Springsteen, Beastie Boys, Ramones, Steely Dan, Rush, and Tom Petty. And as noted above, 8 albums have videos.

That's a whole lot of eights. Nice work Sixtwenty294.

Update: Albums with 8 Songs (October 8th @ 12:11 am)

Got some more 8's thanks to a comment from Bryan Lasky — the albums with 8 songs

  • Boston | Boston
  • Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
  • Black Sabbath | Paranoid
  • Metallica | Master Of Puppets
  • Led Zeppelin | IV (Zoso)
  • Pixies | Come On Pilgrim
  • Van Morrison | Astral Weeks
  • Television | Marquee Moon
  • Leonard Cohen | I'm Your Man (eliminated)
  •

Update: YouTube Links Part 2 & 8 Letter Names (October 8th @ 4:55 pm)

A few things to note here.

First, the mis-linked Arcade Fire and Clash videos from yesterday were updated in the xml. Plus, a bunch of additional video links were added some time today. These include…

  1. Frank Zappa, Cosmik Debris from Apostrophe
  2. Led Zeppelin, Misty Mountain Hop from Zeppelin IV
  3. Metallica, Master of Puppets from Master of Puppets
  4. Minutemen, Jesus And Tequila from Double Nickels On The Dime
  5. Nirvana, Lithium from Nevermind
  6. Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb from The Wall
  7. Radiohead, Everything In Its Right Place from Kid A
  8. Rush, YYZ from Moving Pictures
  9. Violent Femmes, Blister In The Sun from Violent Femmes
  10. Yes, I've Seen All Good People from The Yes Album

Next, if you've been enjoying the numbers game and were miffed that there were 10 new videos and not 8, there's a comment from Lorenzo below that I think you'll like — it's the artists on the list with 8 letter names

  • Bob Dylan
  • Bob Seger
  • Brian Eno
  • Firehose
  • Pavement

Update: Electric Ladyland Album Cover (October 8th @ 8:13 pm)

Official Electric Ladyland album cover
Original Electric Ladyland album cover
Linda Eastman Hendrix Experience Alice in Wonderland

Here's an update for the dudes in the front row, and this one actually is riveting.

The official Electric Landyland album cover (left) has been replaced with the original UK cover (center) featuring a harem of late sixties babes. Once again, banned in the USA and elsewhere.

Notably, Hendrix didn't want this cover or the blurry red and yellow mugshot. Instead he'd requested they use a Linda Eastman photo (right) of the Experience sitting with some kids on the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park. Given a vote, I'd have chosen the babes.

Update: Links to Album Streams (October 9th @ 12:52 pm)

For your listening pleasure, I've stated linking up some of the albums below to free, legal streams on Grooveshark. Unfortunately most of their playlists are incomplete or have tons of duplicates, so you basically need to create each one by hand which is time consuming.

That said, if anyone's feeling ambitious and wants to take on an album or two it'd be greatly appreciated. Just shoot me an email or post a comment with the playlist link.

Update: Fall Tour Dates Announced (October 9th @ 10:32 am)

Nothing to do with albums or 8's, but Fall Tour Dates have been announced.

Update: Video Links Part 3 (October 9th @ 1:30 pm)

Got another handful of additional video links that were added some time today. These include…

  1. Blind Faith, Can't Find My Way Home from Blind Faith
  2. Genesis, In the Cage from Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  3. Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced from Are You Experienced
  4. King Crimson, Talking Drum from Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. Van Morrison, Cyprus Avenue from Astral Weeks

Update: Albums with Horns (October 13th @ 12:31 am)

The rumor mill is rapidly churning with the notion that there will be horns at Festival 8, presumably for the musical costume. Here's a list of albums you might be hearing if that rumor pans out…

  • Curtis Mayfield | Superfly Soundtrack
  • Chicago | The Chicago Transit Authority
  • David Bowie | Ziggy Stardust
  • Frank Zappa | Apostrophe
  • Frank Zappa | Hot Rats
  • Michael Jackson | Thiller
  • Miles Davis | A Tribute To Jack Johnson
  • Pink Floyd | The Wall
  • Radiohead | Kid A
  • Steely Dan | Pretzel Logic
  • T.Rex | Electric Warrior

  • The Band | The Band (aka Brown Album)
  • The Clash | London Calling
  • The Police | Ghost in the Machine

Meanwhile, I'm generally averse to Hitler but the video above cracks me up every time so I'm just embedding to avoid having to go to YouTube — and for the 3 people who still haven't seen it.

Update: Mike's Hotline Hint & more (October 13th @ 11:15 pm)

A few things to report, aside from the fact that CCR, ZZ Top, and the Ramones were killed off today.

First, Mike's hotline is offering a very Gordonesque “hint” at the Halloween album — singing a line from the chorus of the Go-Gos Out Lips Are Sealed. Personally I prefer the Hilary / Haley Duff version. Hear Mike for yourself at 212-330-9092.

Added 10/14 @ 5:45 pm Lots of message board chatter that lips could be a thinly veiled Stones reference.

Added 10/19 @ 8:23 pm “Our lips are sealed” is a lyric in the song Elevation by Television. Coincidence?

Second, I've started a gallery of Festival 8 posters that's already got great art by folks like AJ Masthay, Jamie Huntsman, and Not Pollock.

Finally, I'm doing a Series II Page bobblehead giveaway. This one features Page as The Chairman of the Boards, my favorite of all the bobbles so far.

Update: Phish Festivalography on Sirius (October 14th @ 12:10 am)

Not sure if I'm late to the game on this but I just got wind of a cool sounding show on Sirius called “Phish Festivalography.” It's a four part series starting Thursday the 15th at 9:00 pm Eastern (with replay at 2 am).

Hosted by Jonathan Schwartz from “Gone Phishin',” the exclusive series will cover Phish's festival history in words and music. Sounds promising.

Update: Miner's Case for Ziggy Stardust (October 14th @ 3:00 pm)

Spiders from Mars Fleece

Mr. Miner over at Phish thoughts has made the case for Ziggy Stardust:

For the elaborate theatrics and space-aged costumes alone, Ziggy Stardust would make a superb spectacle for the Halloween set. But beyond the glamorous show this album could provide, the music and lyrics of Bowie’s record fit perfectly with Phish’s place in time.

Read Miner's full post for more.

In other news, Zeppelin IV was just eliminated! Kinda figured that one would stick around for a while but alas, it's gone.

Update: The Album Elimination Set (October 14th @ 5:15 pm)

Got what I think might be a fun concept that revolves around the premise / rumor that there will be 8 albums left at Festival time.

Imagine you have just woken up from a dream. In that dream you were at Festival 8 and the band threw a major curve-ball 2nd set Friday, eliminating albums by playing 6 covers plus a cover encore — one from each of the 7 albums NOT being played.

So for example, in my dream it might look something like this:

  1. Detroit Rock City (Kiss)
  2. Communication Breakdown (Zeppelin)
  3. Poem 58 (Chicago)
  4. Counting Out Time (Genesis)
  5. Every Little Thing She Does (Police)
  6. Rip this Joint (Stones)
  7. Encore: Paradise City (GNR)

Stream a compilation of this fake set

Notably, I mixed and matched what I'd want them to play with what I think they'd play, which I think makes a huge difference, and is probably how a real dream would unfold.

Also note that I believe it's highly unlikely that they'll eliminate the final albums this way*, but given this concept, what would they play in your dream? Post a comment below once you've given it some thought.

* My insane hypothesis here, in case you were wondering, is that they will have a real life version of the haunted gallery. This will be designed by the guy who did the installations at Hampton and Bonnaroo. Throughout the first two days of the fest actors will come in and kill these larger than life covers with real chainsaws, hatchets, spurting blood, etc. The final 3 or so will be killed on stage in a theatrical experience immediately preceding the costume set Saturday.

Update: The Dead are Dead (October 14th @ 8:50 pm)

Crying Dancing Bear

Oh man, you step away for a few hours and they go and kill off the good ol' Grateful Dead. I didn't think for a second they were going to play this, but I wouldn't have complained. For those who were hoping for this one, the only solace I have to offer is this: Terrapin from Virginia Beach '98. Enjoy.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Bands with 4 Members (October 15th @ 12:40 am)

Here's an interesting observation from Greg below: all the bands phish has covered have been 4 members (at one point or another). If that trend continues, here's who you might hear:

  • Black Sabbath
  • Blind Faith
  • Boston (technically)
  • Genesis (v1.0)
  • Kiss
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Metalica
  • Modern Lovers
  • Pink Floyd
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Television
  • The Clash
  • The Doors
  • The Pixies
  • U2
  • Van Halen
  • Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Greg goes on to jokingly note, “That's 16 bands left. 2 weeks left. 16 divided by 2 is 8!!!!!” Fascinating. Just added the Clash and there are now 17 bands in the list rendering Greg's joke humorless.

Update: Handicapping the Albums (October 16th @ 9:40 am)

I don't think anyone's actually keeping books, but Eric Wyman and Matt Dubno have been handicapping the remaining albums. Here are a few of their picks:

  • Sticky Fingers | Matt @ 20:1, Eric @ 3:2
  • Exile on Main Street | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 12:1
  • Moving Pictures | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 25:1
  • Hot Rats | Matt @ 12:1, Eric @ 75:1
  • Electric Ladyland | Matt @ 8:1, Eric @ 3:1

See more handicapping action at 99 Halloweens.

Update: The Campground Albums (October 16th @ 11:50 am)

So this latest rumor has been circulating a bit but the din finally got loud enough that I've decided to post it. People are now saying that there will be 8 campgrounds at Festival 8, one for each of the finalist albums. Here's the rumored list…

  1. David Bowie | Hunky Dory
  2. Genesis | The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway | SBD
  3. Jimi Hendrix | Electric Ladyland
  4. King Crimson | Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. MGMT | Oracular Spectacular
  6. Prince | Purple Rain
  7. Radiohead | Kid A
  8. Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street

I'd take it for what it is, a rumor, but that list pretty well thought out. As I'm sure is the case for most folks, there's a few of my favorites (Stones, Jimi, Genesis), a few I'm not so big on (Radiohead, MGMT), a few I could go either way on (Bowie, Prince), and one I've yet to hear (King Crimson).

Crowd favorite Ziggy Stardust is noticeably absent, leading some to speculate that they'll play a non-campground album. But I'm not so sure as that would mean they'd be playing an album that was previously eliminated, a concept that didn't go over so well with California on the teaser map.

Finally, I saw a great suggestion on another board — the band could go around the campsites late-night and serenade each with a performance of a few tunes from their respective albums. That's probably about the only thing that would make me question my hotel decision, but time will tell.

Update: Much on the Horizon at 8 (October 16th @ 4:40 pm)

Update: The Killer Album Theory (October 16th @ 6:20 pm)

Okay. Here's a theory (not mine) that's either totally obvious or totally out-there, or perhaps a little bit of both.

Let it Bleed Album Cover

The obvious part of the theory (or at least already been discussed here and there) is that the Halloween album is not actually on the list.

The out-there part is that the 100th album is actually the murderer — the one doing all the killing — and that album would be, pun intended, Let it Bleed… the Stones 8th album.

Look forward to your comments on this one.

Hat tip to Cassidy B. for the theory.

Update: Ryan Kerrigan's 8 Balls, David Welker Scratchboard (October 17th @ 5:49 pm)

Ryan Kerrigan Festival 8 Ball

Just added some great stuff to the Festival 8 poster gallery including a set of hand-painted 8 balls by Ryan Kerrigan and an incredible scratchboard piece by David Welker (who also did the Rift cover).

If this is any indication of the type of stuff people will be slinging at the Festival, I might just need an extra suitcase.

Nice work gents.

Update: Pictures at an Exhibition (October 18th @ 11:16 am)

A few followup thoughts to the 100th album theory have emerged in the comment thread below, including one comment from ben who suggests Alice Cooper's 1971 album Killer as the 100th album, noting also that Alice is playing in town on the 30th.

ELP Pictures at an Exhibition

Second, and perhaps more intriguing, is this comment from stealingtime about ELP's 1971 album Pictures at an Exhibition

I doubt they'd play this, as the album has hardly any guitar (listen here) but man does that album cover bear striking resemblance to the Phish gallery or what?

Update: Vendor Map of Festival Grounds (October 19th @ 5:30 pm)

Update removed. Sorry.

Update: Upper Playground / Sonic Living “Day 1” (October 19th @ 10:15 pm)

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8
Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Came across this link on PhishPosters.com tonight. I'm not familiar with either Upper Playground or Sonic Living, both of whom have logos on these, but someone on PhishPosters is guessing that these are Festival 8 laminate designs.

These aren't quite as cool as past laminates if that's the case, though there's plenty of cool stuff in the UP news feed like this brilliant photo gallery of an urban narcolepsy epidemic.

Update: 10:38 pm Interesting. There's a poster gallery on the Sonic Living site that includes these images, sans text. The guitar gun is by Jeremy Fish, the cityscape by Marco Zamora, and the bike by Sam Flores.

Despite the update, I'm still not sure what the examples above are supposed to be . Post a comment if you have any ideas.

Update: Seeking photos from Phish fans (October 21st  @ 1:18 pm)

Local Indio paper The Desert Sun is looking for great photos from past Phish festivals. See here for details and an email address to send pics.

Update: Festival 8 to be Filmed in 3D (October 21st  @ 2:04 pm)

3D glasses

I heard this rumor from a pretty reliable source last week, but this recent PT post seems to confirm it: Festival 8 will be filmed in 3D! Pretty sure that doesn't mean a simulcast, but it could mean a sweet ass IMAX film down the road along the lines of U2 3D or my other favorite band, the Jonas Brothers.

Update: Burble & Borealis (October 22nd @ 5:22 pm)

Here are two of the amazing interactive sculptures that might be melting your face at Festival 8…

Burble

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A spectacular, futuristic sculpture of helium-filled balloons packed with LEDs and infrared sensors that floats above spectators in response to infra-red signals and its immediate environment.

Borealis

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A mirage-like installation that glows with colours and ebullient patterns created in response to the competing and collaborative voices, music and screams of people nearby.

Update: Behold the Plasma Cutter (October 23rd @ 5:00 pm)

Here's some more neat stuff the likes of which you just might see at Festival 8. It's two amazing metal sculptures from the portfolio of San Francisco based Dan Das Mann. As you can see, he's not only a genius with the plasma cutter, but also knows a thing or two about melting faces.

Update: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings @ F8? (October 24th @ 10:30 pm)

Here's a rumor that, if true, has been of the better kept secrets of this whole affair.

As posted in this comment, word is Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will join Phish for the musical costume at Festival 8.

The video at right should give you a good idea of Ms. Jones's superb vocals and the Dap-Kings funk / soul musical stylings.

No complaints from this guy if this is legit, which I believe it be. Especially if it means an Exile on Main Street (or Let it Bleed) costume.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Colossal Testaments in Steel and Stone (October 25th @ 3:00 pm)

Here's a trio of large-scale sculptures from Rosanna Scimeca, another artist you might be seeing at 8. According to her site, Rosanna likes to “explore how the observer may interface, interact, and identify with her installations.” Yeah, I can give her a preview: they're going bug out.

Update: Pollock Halloween Mask + HeadCount Trivia Contest (October 26th @ 1:45 pm)

Today Jambands.com posted information about a Pollock Halloween mask to be available at the WaterWheel table gallery throughout Festival 8. Plus, HeadCount will be running a trivia contest and the grand prize winner will get an uncut sheet of masks with a  one-of-kind Pollock doodle.

Sample trivia question: “What town does Trey Anastasio, John Popper of Blues Traveler and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors all hale from?”

Pollock Festival 8 Teaser

There's also the recently surfaced image at right, which I believe to be a teaser for a Pollock Festival 8 poster, though I'm not 100% on that.

Poster or not, can't wait to see the mask! In the mean time, here's a growing Festival 8 poster gallery.

Update: Stage Photo & Viewing Platform Sketch (October 26th @ 6:45 pm)

Today Twitter user @BathtubGym posted what I believe to be the first pic of the stage setup, as well as a sketch of the viewing platform for the Dan Das Mann installation.

I'm sure I'll say this ten times over the next 2 days, but I can't believe I just got MORE excited.

Update: Festival 8 to be Simulcast Live on Sirus (October 26th @ 9:54 pm)

This just in: all 8 sets of Festival 8 including the musical costume and acoustic set will be simulcast live on JamOn, channel 17 on SIRIUS!!!

Not a subscriber? Good news… you can sign up for a free trial and hear the simulcast without spending a dime. Huge thanks to whoever is responsible for arranging this. Jam On!

Update: They Have Created Fire (October 27th @ 1:56 am)

If you're anything like me, you're somehow riveted by fire — and you'll definitely be making it a point to see this six-pack fire artists rumored to be appearing at Festival 8:

Update: Glitches, XML fun, & Gordon's Hotline (October 28th @ 1:18 pm)

The Wall

Looks like there was some sort of glitch in the album teaser on Phish.com for a bit when Apostrophe was killed — as the gallery was only showing living albums, and the Wall and Exile had gone missing. All seems back to normal now, though the Wall is indeed dead as seen at right.

Also appears that someone's having some fun with the xml file — with Michael Jackson changing to “Michael Jackson Is Alive“ and Yes changing to “Yes Yes Yes Yes.“ — but I'm not reading into either of those too much.

Speaking of having fun, Gordon's hotline (212-330-9092) has had two recent updates, the latest playing off the 100th album theories that are floating around.

And last but not least, I just checked into my flight for tomorrow. If anyone's on Southwest from Chicago at 12:35, hit me up for a free drink coupon. I'll be the dork carrying the poster tube.

Update: Jamtopia Meetup | Friday. Setbreak. Picnic Area. (October 28th @ 4:18 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

Okay, let's make this thing official.

After extensive reviews of the map and comments, I believe the best time and place to meet is setbreak on Friday at the picnic area. It's at the back of the concert field Page side.

That way if people want to hit the Honey Bucket or grab food or drinks or whatever it's all convenient.

Update: Get a FREE scoop of Ben & Jerry's (October 28th @ 5:24 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

I just got an email from Ben & Jerry's with some great news.

In addition to being huge fans of Jamtopia, Vermont's finest ice cream purveyors will be offering free scoops of Phish Food at Festival 8.

All you have to do is “particip8” in a social action with one of the charities at the WaterWheel booth (e.g. sign a petition, make a donation) to get your free delights.

Sweet.

Update: More Stage Photos (October 28th @ 6:25 pm)

Got some more stage pics, this time from Twitter user @briankarol:

I'm thinking they need more speakers!

Update: Festival 8 Wristband (October 29th @ 12:11 am)

Festival 8 wristband

I'm not sure if this is a staff wristband or just the standard issue, but either way it looks pretty sweet sauce. If the production values of this wristband are any indication this is really going to be one hell of a shindig.

Meanwhile, as I write this, Van Morrison and Zeppelin were killed off. Only 9 remain. Can't get there soon enough.

Update: Festival 8 Shout-out on Conan (October 29th @ 8:08 am)

Well this is surreal. Masterfully bearded Phish fan Rob Howard was in the Late Night crowd yesterday and got interviewed by Conan to “promote Phish.”

As you'll see when you watch the video, Conan had a little something extra planned to help get the word out about Festival 8.

Props to Rob for representing Phish — and the great state of Illinois :)

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Finally on My Way (October 29th @ 10:00 am)

Well I'm just about to take off for the airport. This has been an amazing 30+ days tracking the album teaser and I'm almost sad to see it end. Thank you all for your awesome participation: coming up with crazy numerology, alerting me to updates, and just waxing philosophical in the comments.

As soon as I land I'll start up a new post with updates and recaps from the Festival. Hope to keep the great comments going there, so I'll be having a giveaway — a little something that's sure to light up any room. I think you'll like it.

Update 7pm: New Festival 8 Recap post is live.

Update: Phish to Play Exile on Main Street (October 31th @ 3:00 pm)

2033 Comments so far

@nomadicRose: I am being a “Angel of Darkness” and my husband is being “Dracula” (old school Bram Stoker style). Can’t fuckin wait!!!!

@organictela

I think you are on the right track with the campsite signs being axed out when we get there. If MGMT is one of the 8 left, and since it looks like it won’t be a campsite, my guess is that they will have a giant Oracular Spectacular cover on stage before the set which they will ‘axe’ onstage before they play Off the Wall. That would be quite a Halloween trick…

it would be very cool to hear kid a. i think that would sound bad ass with a phish twist. also Crimson would sound killer, but we have to be realistic. what album is unlike any other in the list. THRILLER. though a curveball could be thrown also. personally i wish phish would see some of the comments made by their great phans and play 8 costumes condensed down to the major singles of each album. NOW that would be a historic concert

Good bye AC/DC!!!!

AC/DC out, still no deaths from campground list.  We could have really gotten a spoiler with that map. Kinda hope not. I may not look the last day just to be surprised when I get there.
Who am I kidding.

AC/DC Bagged!

Might as well Tag it too.

dose anyone have any idea of how many tickets have been sold?

@yesman - I agree, I thought it was great that Lamb was on the list, and I’m pulling for it and psyched it was on the final 8 list.  It think it would be epic if that was the LP covered.  Gregg on this board is also very excited and hopeful that it’s Lamb.  ;)

‘cos it’s only knock and knowall, but I like it.

I closed my eyes and Boston slipped away, slipped awaaayheahyahyeahh.

Oh well , thet will play it next Halloween.

$$$ to swap my 7:30pm-2am saturday WET shift

Is anyone out there who has seen the site map and the 7 campground names still thinking that list isn’t the final 8 (if you add MGMT, as I’ve been told is a good idea)?!?

Why is anyone speculating it’s not one of the ‘choosen 8’?  Do you think they will play an LP that got killed?

Thriller, CTA, GYBR, Marquee Moon, Zappa, T.Rex, Ziggy, Bruce, .... will all be killed by weeks end.  DEAD, KILLED, ELIMINATED.  We know this.  Odds are if this ‘map leak’ were false, one of the final 8 would have been killed.  But they haven’t, so it is nearly certain that its only one of the ‘chosen 8’.

On that note, just listened to Kid A for the first time in about a year (I was burnt on Radiohead, needed a break).  Great album, amazingly innovative… but no way they play it.

We should all expect to show up to 7 signs with Axes in them at the campsites.

I can only hope that they leave the ax out of kid A and play the shit out of it!

so what kind of costumes are you people wearing

so far I heard of someone coming as the human slinky

I assume there will be lots of ppeople coming as Max from Where the Wild Things Are

the visuals is what I’m looking forward to

I really hope Thriller gets killed with the Axe… I’m going to make that my desktop.

(If they do not play MJs Thriller) Jon Anderson of Yes lives nearby and will be the special guest on (duh) The Yes Album.  It’s also cool that the King Crimson album cover switches between the US release and UK release w/crimson red border. Also also cool that Genesis’ Lamb is represented; hope phans listen to it and realise there is a lot more to
a)Genesis
b) Peter Gabriel and
c) Phil Collins
than is originally (not) thought of.

@Gregg

Exile really isn’t in the same league as, say, The White Album

And Oracular Spectacular is?  Gregg, you offer some really interesting points of view, and I enjoy your banter, but man… sometimes I just am shocked at your viewpoints.

Exile a ‘standard boring blues rock LP’?!?  I don’t think most music heads would agree.  Exile was number 7 on the all time greatest rock LP’s list in Rolling Stone (White Album was 10), and that list was compiled by some pretty knowledgable folk.  I know it comes down to taste, but as I said before, just because you can throw paint on a canvas doesn’t mean you’ll get the attention Pollack did.  You, my friend, have some unique tastes.

The Phish fan thing is a reflection of the time in history in the bands existance.

1.0 - before the 2000 ‘hiatus’
2.0 - 2002 to 2004 (after ‘hiatus’, before ‘breakup’
3.0 - After reuniting in 2009.

So the number in reference to fans corresponds to when you first started obsessing on the band (which is what we all do, right?!?)

@dude dude - Aynsley Dunbar was an excellent guess, and I have to admit I wasn’t even aware he toured with Black Sabbath… but he never received any Black Sabbath LP credits as part of that band, but they did cover one of his songs (Warning).  It was Bill Bruford.

It will be Marquee Moon. This is the album that has the most interesting parts for each player and that the band has the most potential to make their own.

@sad panda

+10 pts. for using “harshing my mellow.”  I really thought I was the only one these days.

P.S. To those who continue to mention Houses of the Holy as a possible 100th album.  I doubt it (even if there is a 100th) since Govt Mule played it on Halloween last year.  And they proved that even if you can play Zeppelin instrumentally, it’s really not Zep unless you can deliver the vocals like Plant.  Chris Robinson did.  Warren Haynes did not.  No one in Phish can.  So, I don’t even think Zep I is a possibility.  It’s one thing to cover one Zep tune…but quite another to do a full Zep set.  Not buying it.

For fun! check out our podcast (California Soul) all about the upcoming festivities! we have some tech difficulties, but whatever! we play some past tracks from musical costumes and some other killer tracks. a good friend of ours stops in to break some confidentiality rules. check it out, and if ya like listening to goons, look into what we’re doing with our podcast! Much of the info is old to you all but there are some new surprises.

wam bam thank ya ma’am!

@Todd,

that’s partially true. Therm is a group of artists who count as their members some of the names on the map, but not all of the artists on the map have traditionally been members of Therm. Patrick Shearn for one isn’t and if the Charlie is the Charlie I think it is, he’s one of the founders of the Flaming Lotus Girls. They maybe all using the name Therm I suppose for this festival as it’s a very incestuous group of artists.

I personally find this quite fascinating as 2 very different obsessions in my life are colliding down in Indio. I’ve been a huge phish head since 94 and my social life in San Francisco is firmly centered in Burning Man’s ever expanding collection of artists, freaks and adventurers.

@J-Rad re: fire artists

Yes, collectively they’re called “Therm.”

Update coming soon… just haven’t had time to get the images cropped.

@Todd,

Many of the fire artists listed on the map create art for the Burning Man festival. Most likely, based on only their first names listed they are :
Nate Smith
Orion Fredericks
Vance Cearly
Justin Grant (or could be Justin Rodda)
Charley Smith
Patrick Shearn

photos of their work can be found on the Burning Man website

@iHeardtheElectroluxSing:

This is why I was so heavily favoring The Doors. A) They are gods of rock, B) Ray Manzarek was amazing, and I’d bet a donut on Sunday that Page thinks of Ray as an influence, C) hearing Page play “light my fire” would give 60,000 a heart attack. Especially if Page broke out an old 60s organ to play the stuff on.

Ah well, here’s hoping this is next year’s record.

As much as I’d like to see them do it, I think GYBR is probably out.  In a recent interview Trey said he’d called Page and asked if he really wanted to do the album they were working on and Page said no.  I think Page is the Elton fan (and why not) so I thought at that moment that GYBR was probably out.

Just an observation.

Boston would have sounded sick played by Phish, but I highly doubt it was a “major influence” on them like the others they’ve played in the past.  RIP Boston.

At this point I’d be down with the Stones, although I’d still go more crazy over anything Zappa or Jimi Hendrix.

And wtf Bears… wtf… did you not show up to film day? did you not eat your Wheaties this morning? wake the f up and play like you’re an NFL player!

Where was Steve Miller’s Fly Like an Eagle through all this, is what I want to know

hey i got a question?
why are there people thinking that the album they will play has some kind of personal meaning to the band as far as to say the lyrics will hold some kind of personal statement.
dudes thats not like them at all!
god 90% of their music they didnt write the lyrics
why would they do this now
what im trying to say is i dont think lyrics mean much to them.

FESTIVAL 8 Flash Freeze 10/31/09!!

Due to an overwhelming response…..

Phestival 8 FLASH PHREEZE has been moved to the START OF THE SECOND SONG during the halloween set, just encase the times dont work out as planned.. This way everyone will be on the same Page!

As Phish treats us to a nasty Halloween set, we will get a chance to play a little trick of are own on them…...Finally.  The Festival 8 Phreeze will include everyone standing completely still in whatever position you end up in at the beginning of the second sone.

Flash mob / Flash freeze has to be atleast 2 minutes long to be effective in a cochella environment.

After, everyone will go back to acting normal like nothing happen.

Please help spread the Word further!
Check out an example…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GfrfDmXDb0

Hoping for a possible Dr. Dre cameo. Or some other west coast artist

@Matt Chigago
Less the piano and more that Eltons a master singer song writer and Page seems to dig well written ballads & not really assuming anything , just trying to help keep the speculation going actually hope I’m wrong, wouldn’t be my first choice.

And thanks for the vacuum manufacturer correction. I have an old Hoover thats looks just like the one on Lawn Boy so always thought it was the same model, but you are right. It does make my screen name even longer and more awkward though.

outta whats left Id prefer Electric Ladyland, Purple Rain or Boston,
are any of those “right”

I knew Boston wouldn’t make it
I had more than a feeling

Boston Killed.

RIP Clash…

you would have rocked the casbah

Everything is riding on you now ziggy

I’ve opened up to Lambs, GYBR, Sticky, or 100th album idea.  I still want Exile.  As far as the kids vs. custy thing (or newb vs. wook or 1.0 vs. 3.0) whatever.  I suspect us older phans started as “newbs” on dead lot, and although the older heads didn’t love us they did accept us into their scene w/o ripping on us too bad. Trey said it at the Connecticut Forum, that the dead showed him a musical community(Hartford ‘83) We are now the stewards of this legacy, and I say welcome, enjoy the ride. I did my stats based only on stubs and tickets in hand 1st night in the Natti will be 100! I never will know my shut outs, sit outs or my bailouts, but the kid at his 1st show has just as much right to it as I ever do or did. Whats so funny about peace, love and understanding?

As most of you know there’s a rumor that there will be horns present for the musical costume… i just thought i’d pass along a little confirmation to such rumor.  A family friend is currently out in indio rehearsing for 8… and yes he plays some brass.  Take it for what it’s worth… cya at fest ocho : )

Glad people are feeling the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road—anyone that has given that album a spin knows its perfect in everyway.

“My guitar couldn’t hold me so I quit the band!”

trey before the last break up.

Oh it doesn’t seem a year ago
To this very day
You said I’m sorry honey
If I don’t change the pace
I can’t face another day

exile is the new favorite

hoping for ziggy

the 100th album would be cool… houses of the holy, let it bleed ext

@iHeardtheHooverSing

fishman plays a electrolux vacuum
not a hoover

plus the comment about page wanting to play elton?
where did you get that assumtion why because he plays the piano? lol good guess
but your wrong

its going to be the lamb

one time the gallery settled on modern lovers or something, and MGMT was right next to it, and I actually tried to scroll over to the right a little so the knife would hit MGMT instead. no luck.

where are we meeting, marisa? me, you, a couple of FOAMS, the distant strains of MGMT annoying the shit out of us.  ha ha. no, i’m kidding. i don’t mean to be negative.  but i’d still like to have a FOAM with you.

Pre-fest show in Los ANGELES?  Anyone?  I’d heard this rumor somewhere awhile back as a possibility…

Do you think they will kill Thriller with an IV drip?

While no “rumors” are pointing towards it at this point, I’m really hoping/feeling Goodbye Yellow Brick Road at this point.

As iHeardtheHooverSing pointed out, Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies would be an incredible opener. I DARE anyone to listen to that song and argue for anything more epic or downright better than that.

The album also incorporates a lot of piano, which takes it right up Page’s alley, and there’s a lot of great guitar, bass, drums work as well. It has it all: pump up rock (Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting), jam vehicles (Grey Seal and The Ballad of DB end on danceable grooves that could easily turn into spectacular jams), classics (Bennie & the Jets, Candle in the Wind), fun curve-balls (Jamaica Jerk Off), emotional ballads (Seen That Movie Too), etc. Overall GREAT diversity and GREAT songs. And it’s a double album too.

@ Luke

“@phishmeat
Phish covering David Bowie is a bad idea?  Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.  It’s actually a great idea.  Get ready for Ziggy Stardust!”
————————————
O man how did it ever come to this…  ZIGGY + PHISH?  SPARE US PLEASE , Icculus does not approve.

As much as I appreciate sentimental people such as yourself and am sure you are a wonderful person, the bandwagon has picked you up and carried you off without you knowing it. I am sad that your one of the crackheads i was mentioning.  Are you going to shed a tear during Lady Stardust?  I will be taking a bathroom break.  Suffragette City is quite possibly the most annoying song played on the classic rock stations, I cant imagine Phish making it sound any better. Although if they play the album, im not sure I’ll be able to stay awake through Star so it wont matter anyway.

Just pray that people with actual taste like me prove to be right, that with all these other jamming crazy albums on the list, Ziggys soft, indie rock sound does not fill our ears during the 2nd set on Halloween.  I mean Ziggy when we have Zep, Zappa, The Stones, and Hendrix on the list?  Whatever happened to people who like to be taken away and wrapped up in the psychedlia of a Phish show, this isnt a Jonas Brothers concert.

While Ziggy is a great, classic album to play once in a while in the privacy of your own home where noone will ever know you actually put it on, what a shame it would be to see Phish playing Hang on to yourself.  Luke i suggest jumping off the Ziggy bandwagon before its too late.

Ps, Luke- dont take my thrashing to heart, i <3 you

My girlfriend and I are thinking all hints point towards “Exile on Main Street”

1) Fishman on the cover of album with the circus freaks

2) Mike’s hotline tip: “Our LIPS our sealed”

3) Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings possibility

4) Trey’s clue last night: “See me in the middle of the circus…” yet another Exile album cover reference

“Exile on Main Street” is also a great metaphor for the alienation most regular folks are feeling towards the Wall Street bailout.

Just a little phish food for thought.

See you there!

@iheardaHooverSing - Damn I thought I would be the only Hunter S. Thompson there ;)

Oh and for the record, Phish does not owe me anything.

I now think its either Goodbye Yellow Brick Road or Sticky Fingers. But wont rule out T.Rex till its gone.
Funeral/Love Lies would be a grand opener and I could see this being the album Page wanted to play, and no excuses need to be made for any part of the album, vocals instruments all line up, as long as Fishman sings Candle in the wind w/ hoover solo it will work.

@Gregg
I agree with the MGMT remarks. Shits getting stuck in my brain

Sharon Jones AND the dap kings?, her band will be with her too? If so isnt it more likely there playin at the Festival as earlier in the day entertainment on a side stage or even in the Bloody Mary bar?  Im sure any guests would end up on stage with Phish eventually but Sharon& Dap Kings being there doesnt convince me shes singing the Halloween album.

And killer, I dare you to ax one of those Bowie or Stones albums.

Yinz need to chill out!!!  Reading this back and forth pissing contest of wit and wisdom is harshing my mellow.  Enjoy the show, be nice to one another, and be Gr8ful!!!

Trick or Treat…..

AUDIENCE FLASH MOB/FLASH FREEZE

Flash Freeze Is Confirmed @ 7:45 10/31/09!!!!!.

As Phish treats us on Halloween, during the Halloween set the greatest trick ever by the audience will be performed @ 7:45 SHARP!! Everyone standing completely still in whatever position you end up @ 7:45 SHARP!

Flash mob / Flash freeze has to be atleast 2 minutes long to be effective.

After, everyone will go back to acting normal like nothing happen!

Please help spread the Word further!

Super Epic = Sepic!!!!!

Im pretty sure the 100the album is Off the Wall.  Sharon Jones being brought in seems to confirm it.  trey can’t sing that album an she can.  Thriller would have been too obvoius an this album would work better anyway.  “burn this disco down” set closer.  Also I predict they will bring their guests back out for a set three Thriller encore.  Plus Off the wall being the 100th album that is not on the wall is tricky business.  get your dancing shoes on.

and now it’s Black Sabbath Paranoid that just got killed off, but while flipping through the albums, site paused on MGMT… Oh, I had my fingers crossed….  I just can’t see Phish choosing MGMT for the costume…

Regardless, I can’t say I’m that upset about Paranoid getting the axe.

4 days to Festival 8…. 5 days to music… 6 days to costume…

London Calling axed! This is an outrage. Let’s boycott the Halloween set! Who’s with me?!?!?!?!

Kidding, kidding! :)

It is disappointing and I think a real missed opportunity to do a record just enough out of their genre to be interesting, but still super fun for all. So it goes.

So now I’m looking at the list with fresh eyes and there really isn’t a lot on the remaining 25 I’m excited about - I pictured them leaving a lot of the more “likely seeming” stuff on until the end.

I think it’s probably Exile, which feels a bit anticlimactic, but it’s a fine record, if pretty boring standard blues rock.

I think I’m joining team MGMT. I’d heard the record before this process, but I’ve listened to it a ton lately when I need to get the likes of Kid a out of my ears (what a terrible record that is - seriously just awful).

Oracular is a really fun record. Add to that it’s become my 18 month old son’s favorite record by far. (past faves include Vampire Weekend, Junta, any live Phish really, but especially Roses Are Free from Red Rocks). It really makes me happy and would be a super fun party. And a lot more interesting than something super-standard like Exile. Exile really isn’t in the same league as, say, The White Album.

I really can’t believe the following records remain: Kid A, Springsteen, Astral Weeks, Sabbath, AC/DC, Zeppelin I (because of GTBT). I don’t think there’s a chance for any of those. There are 3 - 5 left that have any chance IMO.

Go MGMT! And I’m “1.0” as shit you judgemental tool types. See y’all in a few days :)

@ Allister
I love prince and phish don’t get me wrong. I have not heard any of the 93 or 94 purple rains, and I am sure they were better. bUT 99’S hurt my heart I digress though. Listening to Lambs it seems a bit long and heavy, but I do see why people would want phish to play it. Lastly what are the criteria for V1.0 2.0 and 3.0 fans. Is it just hiatus markers or birth decades or what. Laters

@Herbalessence from IL: HELL YES.
@Jimmy: I take t back, I don’t care what they play but God bless you.
@A to the E: i laughed so hard at your post i love you.

i have 1,000 glow sticks and it’s gonna rain rain rraaaaaaaiiiinnnnn

missed opportunity

@Jimmy from NY: i’m right there with you.

@Todd:  Thanks for all of this - the ideas, debates and art ideas are amazing and are making me so excited, I can’t wait to get there. I am one of the many people slowing down my work by reading and pondering your blog/comments.

@ marisa:  I think they said on the web site that  was closed until after sound check…Also someone mentioned that we should meet at the first set break in front f the soundboard…I think that will be the best and easiest idea for all of us to remember. I’ll see you there and Todd  - I’ll get you a FOAM as well! If you accept all of our beers you won’t have to bring any!!!

My picks are/were:1. Paranoid2. Yellow Brick Road3.  London Calling4.  Ziggy Stardust  5.  Something no of us has thought of yet! And (I believe) the map was an early edition of fake… Thought it was an interesting idea for the campgrounds to be named after albume that they were planning on killing!

See you all there… 5 days and counting!!

New here, but not new to phish (though all are welcome)

Why is there no talk of the “leak”...ie. people are calling bands that are campsites, but not likely… as there are 7…..

do you think phish is messing with us?
do you think they are pissed and planning another way to unleash the band?
do you think they are learning a new one?
Has this all been a way to get thriller less attention as it was predicted when he died?

These all lead back to my core question,
do I have a chance at getting kid A?

Ok people…...  We are 4 days away!!!!! Lots of us keep mentioning that we are gonna have a Foam together. So who is in??? For real!!  Do we get to watch soundcheck? Anyone know?

ZIGGY!!! Here I come!

6 days till festival 8.

Ready to rock, groove my ass off, and party it up.

Trying to find a costume… gotta look my best.

I’ll be seeing you soon, Phish.

Anyone from UCLA making the trip?

The final 3 will be:
1. Exile
2. Ziggy
3. Jimi

Who’s that woman on your arm all dressed up to do you harm
And I’m hip to what she’ll do, give her just about a month or two.
Bit off more than I can chew and I knew what it was leading to,
Some things, well, I can’t refuse,
One of them, one of them the bedroom blues.
She delivers right on time, I can’t resist a corny line,
But take the shine right off you shoes,
Carryin’, carryin’ the bedroom blues.

I wanna tell you ‘bout a dance
that’s goin’ around
everybody’s doin’ it
from the grownups down
Don’t move your head
don’t move your hands
don’t move your lips
just shake your hips
Do the hip shake, babe
do the hip shake, babe
shake your hip, babe
shake your hip, babe

Well the ballrooms and smelly bordellos
And dressing rooms filled with parasites.
On stage the band has got problems,
They’re a bag of nerves on first nights.
He ain’t tied down to no home town,
Yeah, and he thought he was wreckless.
You think he’s bad, he thinks you’re mad,
Yeah, and the guitar player gets restless.

Wow, OK.  Just got done listening to Marquee Moon (first time ever) and Double Nickels on the Dime (first time straight through)

Thank you, Phish.  Thank you, Todd.  Thank you, Grooveshark.  Thank you, everyone!!

(still pulling for Exile, woooohh yeaah!!)

Thank you for your wine, california
Thank you for your sweet and bitter fruits
Yes, Ive got the desert in my toenail
And hid the speed inside my shoe

Starting to think The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway would be epic in the parlance of these times

Sharon Jones is amazing that would be sic if true, I missed her last time shes was in town but heard it was fantastic, I want her to sing Paranoid with them!

Nirvana gone, no surprise there.

@Dizzy
you have a great attitude bro, you are not alone..peace

@phishmeat
Phish covering David Bowie is a bad idea?  Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.  It’s actually a great idea.  Get ready for Ziggy Stardust!

Courtney Love struck again -Glad they killed somethin’ today, we needed some action,

Nirvana…GONE

I just listened to ‘Apostrophe’ for the first time ever.  Never heard a single tune before.

Wow.

Thank you guys.

See you at 8.

They killed the Swimming baby!

Nirvana and Clash killed tonight.

Nirvana and The Clash got killed!!!!

clash and modern lovers slain

London’s Line is dead, Todd thanks for introducing me to grooveshack

London Calling is gone.
Wow.

I know the majority of doubtful cynical phishheads will doubt my source and doubt my legitimacy because this is my first post, but i have a really good friend who interns for Daptone Records and had CONFIRMED that Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings will be performing at Phish 8, he is not 100% on the album choice but says the office rumors suggest there is a STRONG chance it is Exile on main St.  This has been kept under wraps for sometime now but he was able to confirm last night.  See you guys in a week, Its just a shot Away!!!!

the clash is dead

Another one bites the dust… and sadly, its the Clash… I thought that one would’ve been fun.  Darn it.

Gamehenge, Acoustic?

they just hung up on london calling

Death or Glory?  Looks like its death…  Shame.

enorman83 got my dumb question right (and right away).  Bill Bruford played drums on the Yes Album, and on Lark’s Tongue, and was a temporary ‘fill in’ for Genesis drummer Phil Collins (he used to be really good, go listen to his solo band Brand X) on the Trick of the Tail tour.  That tour had a track released on the British version of the Genesis album called ‘3 Sides Live’, so Bruford got credit for ‘being in’ Genesis for a tour on an LP.

I’m convinced the ‘site map 7’ are the only choices worth considering now that LC got a knive.  I hope the 8th LP is MGMT, based on the leak preceding the map going public.

That being the case, I feel you can discount Kid A, Oracular Spectacular and Purple Rain, those both being genre mismatches and vocally challenging.

As much as I’d like to see Larks’ Tongues performed, I think its too stressful for both the band and the audience (who would do the violin pieces?!?)

That leaves Hunky Dory, Lamb, Ladyland, and Exile as my final four favorites.  Since I picked Lamb from Day 1, I’ll leave that as my ‘favorite’ entry.

Any of those four LP’s would be a great choice and really provide another amazing set to add to the existing 4 (5 if you count DSOM).

But gun to my head, I say Exile has the best chance of being played.  Loving Cup will be a huge crowd pleaser.  Rocks Off would be an excellent opener (the line ‘the sunshine bores the daylight out of me…’  is a one of the best rock moments in any song ever), its got horns and all, vocals are attainable, it’s a lengthy piece, and has alot of kick ass rock and roll tunes and the critical prestige to be a worthy selection.

Clash Done!!!!!! It would have fucking rocked!

R.I.P. London Calling

I guess Europe ‘10 is off!

My new top five- four of the list and one suspect killer.

1. Ziggy
2. C.T.A. w/ G.C.H. sitting in. (the only horn section that could cover it w/ phish in my mind)
3. GYBR
4. Exile
5. In Through the Out Door

I’ve read the posts about Houses of the Holy but c’mon folks. Zepplin’s most phishy album is for sure I.T.t.O.R. Bunch of keys for Paige to go nuts on and enough room for Trey to have fun.

Also it’s, you guessed it, their 8th Album! One more cool note. It was released around this time of the year in 1979 and recorded in 1978.

You heard it here first, that’s what they’re playing for sure.

clash = goneski (dead)

Clash has been nailed!!!

London Calling gets the axe.

Man or Astro-Man?

That would kick ass.

The Clash - London Calling has been killed

Very curious to know if anyone’s heard anything about any L.A. warmup shows… Friends, if you know anything about an L.A. area pre-fest gig, do share…

6 days till the first set. kill 6 tomorrow, 5 the next day, 4 the day after and so on, you’re left with how many albums?

8.

I’m feeling rough, I’m feeling raw, I’m in the prime of my life.
Let’s make some music, make some money, find some models for wives.
I’ll move to Paris, shoot some heroin, and fuck with the stars.
You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars.

This is our decision, to live fast and die young.
We’ve got the vision, now let’s have some fun.
Yeah, it’s overwhelming, but what else can we do.
Get jobs in offices, and wake up for the morning commute.

Forget about our mothers and our friends
We’re fated to pretend
To pretend
We’re fated to pretend
To pretend

I’ll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms
I’ll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world
I’ll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home
Yeah, I’ll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone.

There’s really nothing, nothing we can do
Love must be forgotten, life can always start up anew.
The models will have children, we’ll get a divorce
We’ll find some more models, everything must run it’s course.

We’ll choke on our vomit and that will be the end
We were fated to pretend
To pretend
We’re fated to pretend
To pretend

Not a huge fan of MGMT, but would be an apropos song to start off with… plus would be a total party…

This will be our second show, our first was Chicago.  I really want to hear Possum.  3.0 RULES!!!!  :)

So I thought I’ve been keeping myself afloat of the rumors circulating around about 8, but I am confused about one (well…. more than one…. but this one in particular)..... Where are people getting the idea of horns being at the fest? Did I miss it on their website? What is the source of this rumor? The reason I ask is because it seems people are trying to narrow down the possibilities of what they’ll cover based on whether it would work well with horns.

Also, anyone else find it odd that we’re a week away from the Halloween set and they didn’t eliminate ANY albums today?

VIVA ZIGGY!!!!!!!

Playlist (partial) for Brian Eno’s Before & After Science:

http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/playlist/Brian_Eno_Before_and_After_Science_partial_/18057767

This is only 8 of the 10 tracks.  I could not find “Kurt’s Rejoinder” or “Through Hollow Lands (For Harold Budd)” streaming on Grooveshark.

If someone finds them, please let me know and can edit this playlist.
