Introduction: The Phish Halloween Album Teaser (September 28th, 2009)

Today the Festival 8 site on Phish.com was updated with yet another teaser animation, only this time instead of teags sayg the location, they're teasing the Halloween cover album.

The new site features a haunted gallery of 99 albums, each a possibility for the musical costume, and each a possible victim of an unfortunate demise.

A handful of albums have already been killed off, and there should be a lot more killing over the next few weeks as the welcome card promises Phish will “play the last record left alive.”

Gotta admit I was pleased to see both of my top choices — Appetite for Destruction and Exile on Main Street — made the list. Figure Appetite is a long-shot but Exile could have a chance.

Place card for Phish Halloween album teaser

Though I doubt this will be quite as uproar-inducing as the Halloween map, it's sure to keep the Festival 8 buzz going strong. Plus it'll also give you a chance to study up on the remaining possibilities (rumor has it there will be 8 albums left when the fest begins) and get familiar with the material, whatever it may be.

WARNING: Spoilers & speculation below. Proceed at your own risk.

Update: The Grateful Living (September 29th @ 12:11 am)

I'm sure this means nothing, but one eagle-eyed fan has noticed that the Grateful Dead are listed as the “Grateful Living” in the xml config file that's driving the gallery. Hmmm… certainly wouldn't mind if American Beauty is “the last record left alive.”

Update: The Grateful Living Part 2 (September 29th @ 2:41 am)

There's a comment below about the Grateful Dead thing pointing out that the word “living” is used in the xml file to denote albums that are still in the mix. I realized that, but in this case it's not just the <stateofbeing> node that says living, but the <title> node as well.

That said, the reader's comment opened my mind up to a much more likely theory. Someone did a search and replace on that xml file, replacing all occurrences of “dead” with “living” — only they didn't select match case — and so the “Grateful Dead” became the “Grateful living.” Note also the lowercase “l” which I incorrectly noted as an uppercase “L” above.

So in effect, I'm still sure it means nothing… other than that speculating on Phish teaser animations is a great way to waste time.

Update: The Grateful Living Part 3 (September 29th @ 1:36 pm)

The Grateful Dead are now listed correctly in the .xml file. Case closed.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 10:36 pm)

Born to Run Languedoc

Strange things are afoot in the haunted gallery, as a number of album covers have started to get a Phish-themed makeover.

  • Phish are in the sardine can on Hello Nasty
  • The hot dog vendor on Pretzel Logic is sporting a viking hat
  • The Boss is playing a Languedoc
  • Trey and Page are moving a keyboard on Moving Pictures
  • T-Rex is now T-rey
  • Tom Petty is wearing a Phish shirt
  • Mike Gordon has joined the Ramones (added 10/7)
  • Rage Against the Machine is now Page Against the Machine (added 10/9)
  • Fishman is on the cover of Exile on Main Street (added 10/10)
  • Ghost in the Machine is now Story of the Ghost in the Machine (added 10/15)
  • AC/DC Back in Black is now AC/DC Bag (added 10/15)
  • Page is in the rearview mirror on the Minutemen album (added 10/16)
  • Fishman's head has been added to one of the Electric Ladyland ladies (added 10/16)

Just as it was starting to feel really repetitive, this is a great twist to keep things interesting.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 11:36 pm)

Original Blind Faith album cover

A commenter below just inquired if anyone noticed that a “new album” had been added to the gallery

Well it's a new album cover, but not a new album. That's the original cover image from Blind Faith's self-titled debut. Rumor has it the naked young girl is Ginger Baker's daughter, but whoever it is she didn't make the cut. The cover was banned in the USA where it was sold with the “bland, but shopper-friendly, band photo.”

Update: Album YouTube Links (October 7th @ 3:23 pm)

Well this is interesting. Some of the albums in the xml config file have been updated to include YouTube links.

I'll give you one guess how many albums got the special treatment…

  1. AC/DC, Hells Bells from Back in Black
  2. Aerosmith, Sweet Emotion from Toys In The Attic (by Gordon/Kottke)
  3. Arcade Fire, Wake Up from Funeral
  4. David Bowie, Oh You Pretty Things from Hunky Dory
  5. David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust from Five Years Live
  6. Led Zeppelin, Going to California from Zeppelin IV
  7. The Band, Up On Cripple Creek from The Band
  8. Clash, Clampdown from London Calling

I sure hope these aren't the finalist because they seem to have forgotten GNR :)

Update: Festival 8 Numerology (October 7th @ 7:17 pm)

Just came across some interesting numerology observations from PTer Sixtwenty294.

8 ball
  • Moving Pictures is Rush's 8th album
  • Escape is Journey's 8th album
  • Kiss Alive II is Kiss's 8th album
  • Tonight's the Night is Neil Young's 8th album
  • Goodbye yellow brick road is Elton John's 8th album (including a live album)
  • Hot Rats is Frank Zappa's 8th album (including comilations) Thx Jeff G.

Plus, they changed 8 album covers — Blind Faith, T.Rex, Springsteen, Beastie Boys, Ramones, Steely Dan, Rush, and Tom Petty. And as noted above, 8 albums have videos.

That's a whole lot of eights. Nice work Sixtwenty294.

Update: Albums with 8 Songs (October 8th @ 12:11 am)

Got some more 8's thanks to a comment from Bryan Lasky — the albums with 8 songs

  • Boston | Boston
  • Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
  • Black Sabbath | Paranoid
  • Metallica | Master Of Puppets
  • Led Zeppelin | IV (Zoso)
  • Pixies | Come On Pilgrim
  • Van Morrison | Astral Weeks
  • Television | Marquee Moon
  • Leonard Cohen | I'm Your Man (eliminated)
  •

Update: YouTube Links Part 2 & 8 Letter Names (October 8th @ 4:55 pm)

A few things to note here.

First, the mis-linked Arcade Fire and Clash videos from yesterday were updated in the xml. Plus, a bunch of additional video links were added some time today. These include…

  1. Frank Zappa, Cosmik Debris from Apostrophe
  2. Led Zeppelin, Misty Mountain Hop from Zeppelin IV
  3. Metallica, Master of Puppets from Master of Puppets
  4. Minutemen, Jesus And Tequila from Double Nickels On The Dime
  5. Nirvana, Lithium from Nevermind
  6. Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb from The Wall
  7. Radiohead, Everything In Its Right Place from Kid A
  8. Rush, YYZ from Moving Pictures
  9. Violent Femmes, Blister In The Sun from Violent Femmes
  10. Yes, I've Seen All Good People from The Yes Album

Next, if you've been enjoying the numbers game and were miffed that there were 10 new videos and not 8, there's a comment from Lorenzo below that I think you'll like — it's the artists on the list with 8 letter names

  • Bob Dylan
  • Bob Seger
  • Brian Eno
  • Firehose
  • Pavement

Update: Electric Ladyland Album Cover (October 8th @ 8:13 pm)

Official Electric Ladyland album cover
Original Electric Ladyland album cover
Linda Eastman Hendrix Experience Alice in Wonderland

Here's an update for the dudes in the front row, and this one actually is riveting.

The official Electric Landyland album cover (left) has been replaced with the original UK cover (center) featuring a harem of late sixties babes. Once again, banned in the USA and elsewhere.

Notably, Hendrix didn't want this cover or the blurry red and yellow mugshot. Instead he'd requested they use a Linda Eastman photo (right) of the Experience sitting with some kids on the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park. Given a vote, I'd have chosen the babes.

Update: Links to Album Streams (October 9th @ 12:52 pm)

For your listening pleasure, I've stated linking up some of the albums below to free, legal streams on Grooveshark. Unfortunately most of their playlists are incomplete or have tons of duplicates, so you basically need to create each one by hand which is time consuming.

That said, if anyone's feeling ambitious and wants to take on an album or two it'd be greatly appreciated. Just shoot me an email or post a comment with the playlist link.

Update: Fall Tour Dates Announced (October 9th @ 10:32 am)

Nothing to do with albums or 8's, but Fall Tour Dates have been announced.

Update: Video Links Part 3 (October 9th @ 1:30 pm)

Got another handful of additional video links that were added some time today. These include…

  1. Blind Faith, Can't Find My Way Home from Blind Faith
  2. Genesis, In the Cage from Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  3. Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced from Are You Experienced
  4. King Crimson, Talking Drum from Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. Van Morrison, Cyprus Avenue from Astral Weeks

Update: Albums with Horns (October 13th @ 12:31 am)

The rumor mill is rapidly churning with the notion that there will be horns at Festival 8, presumably for the musical costume. Here's a list of albums you might be hearing if that rumor pans out…

  • Curtis Mayfield | Superfly Soundtrack
  • Chicago | The Chicago Transit Authority
  • David Bowie | Ziggy Stardust
  • Frank Zappa | Apostrophe
  • Frank Zappa | Hot Rats
  • Michael Jackson | Thiller
  • Miles Davis | A Tribute To Jack Johnson
  • Pink Floyd | The Wall
  • Radiohead | Kid A
  • Steely Dan | Pretzel Logic
  • T.Rex | Electric Warrior

  • The Band | The Band (aka Brown Album)
  • The Clash | London Calling
  • The Police | Ghost in the Machine

Meanwhile, I'm generally averse to Hitler but the video above cracks me up every time so I'm just embedding to avoid having to go to YouTube — and for the 3 people who still haven't seen it.

Update: Mike's Hotline Hint & more (October 13th @ 11:15 pm)

A few things to report, aside from the fact that CCR, ZZ Top, and the Ramones were killed off today.

First, Mike's hotline is offering a very Gordonesque “hint” at the Halloween album — singing a line from the chorus of the Go-Gos Out Lips Are Sealed. Personally I prefer the Hilary / Haley Duff version. Hear Mike for yourself at 212-330-9092.

Added 10/14 @ 5:45 pm Lots of message board chatter that lips could be a thinly veiled Stones reference.

Added 10/19 @ 8:23 pm “Our lips are sealed” is a lyric in the song Elevation by Television. Coincidence?

Second, I've started a gallery of Festival 8 posters that's already got great art by folks like AJ Masthay, Jamie Huntsman, and Not Pollock.

Finally, I'm doing a Series II Page bobblehead giveaway. This one features Page as The Chairman of the Boards, my favorite of all the bobbles so far.

Update: Phish Festivalography on Sirius (October 14th @ 12:10 am)

Not sure if I'm late to the game on this but I just got wind of a cool sounding show on Sirius called “Phish Festivalography.” It's a four part series starting Thursday the 15th at 9:00 pm Eastern (with replay at 2 am).

Hosted by Jonathan Schwartz from “Gone Phishin',” the exclusive series will cover Phish's festival history in words and music. Sounds promising.

Update: Miner's Case for Ziggy Stardust (October 14th @ 3:00 pm)

Spiders from Mars Fleece

Mr. Miner over at Phish thoughts has made the case for Ziggy Stardust:

For the elaborate theatrics and space-aged costumes alone, Ziggy Stardust would make a superb spectacle for the Halloween set. But beyond the glamorous show this album could provide, the music and lyrics of Bowie’s record fit perfectly with Phish’s place in time.

Read Miner's full post for more.

In other news, Zeppelin IV was just eliminated! Kinda figured that one would stick around for a while but alas, it's gone.

Update: The Album Elimination Set (October 14th @ 5:15 pm)

Got what I think might be a fun concept that revolves around the premise / rumor that there will be 8 albums left at Festival time.

Imagine you have just woken up from a dream. In that dream you were at Festival 8 and the band threw a major curve-ball 2nd set Friday, eliminating albums by playing 6 covers plus a cover encore — one from each of the 7 albums NOT being played.

So for example, in my dream it might look something like this:

  1. Detroit Rock City (Kiss)
  2. Communication Breakdown (Zeppelin)
  3. Poem 58 (Chicago)
  4. Counting Out Time (Genesis)
  5. Every Little Thing She Does (Police)
  6. Rip this Joint (Stones)
  7. Encore: Paradise City (GNR)

Stream a compilation of this fake set

Notably, I mixed and matched what I'd want them to play with what I think they'd play, which I think makes a huge difference, and is probably how a real dream would unfold.

Also note that I believe it's highly unlikely that they'll eliminate the final albums this way*, but given this concept, what would they play in your dream? Post a comment below once you've given it some thought.

* My insane hypothesis here, in case you were wondering, is that they will have a real life version of the haunted gallery. This will be designed by the guy who did the installations at Hampton and Bonnaroo. Throughout the first two days of the fest actors will come in and kill these larger than life covers with real chainsaws, hatchets, spurting blood, etc. The final 3 or so will be killed on stage in a theatrical experience immediately preceding the costume set Saturday.

Update: The Dead are Dead (October 14th @ 8:50 pm)

Crying Dancing Bear

Oh man, you step away for a few hours and they go and kill off the good ol' Grateful Dead. I didn't think for a second they were going to play this, but I wouldn't have complained. For those who were hoping for this one, the only solace I have to offer is this: Terrapin from Virginia Beach '98. Enjoy.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Bands with 4 Members (October 15th @ 12:40 am)

Here's an interesting observation from Greg below: all the bands phish has covered have been 4 members (at one point or another). If that trend continues, here's who you might hear:

  • Black Sabbath
  • Blind Faith
  • Boston (technically)
  • Genesis (v1.0)
  • Kiss
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Metalica
  • Modern Lovers
  • Pink Floyd
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Television
  • The Clash
  • The Doors
  • The Pixies
  • U2
  • Van Halen
  • Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Greg goes on to jokingly note, “That's 16 bands left. 2 weeks left. 16 divided by 2 is 8!!!!!” Fascinating. Just added the Clash and there are now 17 bands in the list rendering Greg's joke humorless.

Update: Handicapping the Albums (October 16th @ 9:40 am)

I don't think anyone's actually keeping books, but Eric Wyman and Matt Dubno have been handicapping the remaining albums. Here are a few of their picks:

  • Sticky Fingers | Matt @ 20:1, Eric @ 3:2
  • Exile on Main Street | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 12:1
  • Moving Pictures | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 25:1
  • Hot Rats | Matt @ 12:1, Eric @ 75:1
  • Electric Ladyland | Matt @ 8:1, Eric @ 3:1

See more handicapping action at 99 Halloweens.

Update: The Campground Albums (October 16th @ 11:50 am)

So this latest rumor has been circulating a bit but the din finally got loud enough that I've decided to post it. People are now saying that there will be 8 campgrounds at Festival 8, one for each of the finalist albums. Here's the rumored list…

  1. David Bowie | Hunky Dory
  2. Genesis | The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway | SBD
  3. Jimi Hendrix | Electric Ladyland
  4. King Crimson | Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. MGMT | Oracular Spectacular
  6. Prince | Purple Rain
  7. Radiohead | Kid A
  8. Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street

I'd take it for what it is, a rumor, but that list pretty well thought out. As I'm sure is the case for most folks, there's a few of my favorites (Stones, Jimi, Genesis), a few I'm not so big on (Radiohead, MGMT), a few I could go either way on (Bowie, Prince), and one I've yet to hear (King Crimson).

Crowd favorite Ziggy Stardust is noticeably absent, leading some to speculate that they'll play a non-campground album. But I'm not so sure as that would mean they'd be playing an album that was previously eliminated, a concept that didn't go over so well with California on the teaser map.

Finally, I saw a great suggestion on another board — the band could go around the campsites late-night and serenade each with a performance of a few tunes from their respective albums. That's probably about the only thing that would make me question my hotel decision, but time will tell.

Update: Much on the Horizon at 8 (October 16th @ 4:40 pm)

Update: The Killer Album Theory (October 16th @ 6:20 pm)

Okay. Here's a theory (not mine) that's either totally obvious or totally out-there, or perhaps a little bit of both.

Let it Bleed Album Cover

The obvious part of the theory (or at least already been discussed here and there) is that the Halloween album is not actually on the list.

The out-there part is that the 100th album is actually the murderer — the one doing all the killing — and that album would be, pun intended, Let it Bleed… the Stones 8th album.

Look forward to your comments on this one.

Hat tip to Cassidy B. for the theory.

Update: Ryan Kerrigan's 8 Balls, David Welker Scratchboard (October 17th @ 5:49 pm)

Ryan Kerrigan Festival 8 Ball

Just added some great stuff to the Festival 8 poster gallery including a set of hand-painted 8 balls by Ryan Kerrigan and an incredible scratchboard piece by David Welker (who also did the Rift cover).

If this is any indication of the type of stuff people will be slinging at the Festival, I might just need an extra suitcase.

Nice work gents.

Update: Pictures at an Exhibition (October 18th @ 11:16 am)

A few followup thoughts to the 100th album theory have emerged in the comment thread below, including one comment from ben who suggests Alice Cooper's 1971 album Killer as the 100th album, noting also that Alice is playing in town on the 30th.

ELP Pictures at an Exhibition

Second, and perhaps more intriguing, is this comment from stealingtime about ELP's 1971 album Pictures at an Exhibition

I doubt they'd play this, as the album has hardly any guitar (listen here) but man does that album cover bear striking resemblance to the Phish gallery or what?

Update: Vendor Map of Festival Grounds (October 19th @ 5:30 pm)

Update removed. Sorry.

Update: Upper Playground / Sonic Living “Day 1” (October 19th @ 10:15 pm)

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8
Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Came across this link on PhishPosters.com tonight. I'm not familiar with either Upper Playground or Sonic Living, both of whom have logos on these, but someone on PhishPosters is guessing that these are Festival 8 laminate designs.

These aren't quite as cool as past laminates if that's the case, though there's plenty of cool stuff in the UP news feed like this brilliant photo gallery of an urban narcolepsy epidemic.

Update: 10:38 pm Interesting. There's a poster gallery on the Sonic Living site that includes these images, sans text. The guitar gun is by Jeremy Fish, the cityscape by Marco Zamora, and the bike by Sam Flores.

Despite the update, I'm still not sure what the examples above are supposed to be . Post a comment if you have any ideas.

Update: Seeking photos from Phish fans (October 21st  @ 1:18 pm)

Local Indio paper The Desert Sun is looking for great photos from past Phish festivals. See here for details and an email address to send pics.

Update: Festival 8 to be Filmed in 3D (October 21st  @ 2:04 pm)

3D glasses

I heard this rumor from a pretty reliable source last week, but this recent PT post seems to confirm it: Festival 8 will be filmed in 3D! Pretty sure that doesn't mean a simulcast, but it could mean a sweet ass IMAX film down the road along the lines of U2 3D or my other favorite band, the Jonas Brothers.

Update: Burble & Borealis (October 22nd @ 5:22 pm)

Here are two of the amazing interactive sculptures that might be melting your face at Festival 8…

Burble

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A spectacular, futuristic sculpture of helium-filled balloons packed with LEDs and infrared sensors that floats above spectators in response to infra-red signals and its immediate environment.

Borealis

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A mirage-like installation that glows with colours and ebullient patterns created in response to the competing and collaborative voices, music and screams of people nearby.

Update: Behold the Plasma Cutter (October 23rd @ 5:00 pm)

Here's some more neat stuff the likes of which you just might see at Festival 8. It's two amazing metal sculptures from the portfolio of San Francisco based Dan Das Mann. As you can see, he's not only a genius with the plasma cutter, but also knows a thing or two about melting faces.

Update: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings @ F8? (October 24th @ 10:30 pm)

Here's a rumor that, if true, has been of the better kept secrets of this whole affair.

As posted in this comment, word is Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will join Phish for the musical costume at Festival 8.

The video at right should give you a good idea of Ms. Jones's superb vocals and the Dap-Kings funk / soul musical stylings.

No complaints from this guy if this is legit, which I believe it be. Especially if it means an Exile on Main Street (or Let it Bleed) costume.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Colossal Testaments in Steel and Stone (October 25th @ 3:00 pm)

Here's a trio of large-scale sculptures from Rosanna Scimeca, another artist you might be seeing at 8. According to her site, Rosanna likes to “explore how the observer may interface, interact, and identify with her installations.” Yeah, I can give her a preview: they're going bug out.

Update: Pollock Halloween Mask + HeadCount Trivia Contest (October 26th @ 1:45 pm)

Today Jambands.com posted information about a Pollock Halloween mask to be available at the WaterWheel table gallery throughout Festival 8. Plus, HeadCount will be running a trivia contest and the grand prize winner will get an uncut sheet of masks with a  one-of-kind Pollock doodle.

Sample trivia question: “What town does Trey Anastasio, John Popper of Blues Traveler and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors all hale from?”

Pollock Festival 8 Teaser

There's also the recently surfaced image at right, which I believe to be a teaser for a Pollock Festival 8 poster, though I'm not 100% on that.

Poster or not, can't wait to see the mask! In the mean time, here's a growing Festival 8 poster gallery.

Update: Stage Photo & Viewing Platform Sketch (October 26th @ 6:45 pm)

Today Twitter user @BathtubGym posted what I believe to be the first pic of the stage setup, as well as a sketch of the viewing platform for the Dan Das Mann installation.

I'm sure I'll say this ten times over the next 2 days, but I can't believe I just got MORE excited.

Update: Festival 8 to be Simulcast Live on Sirus (October 26th @ 9:54 pm)

This just in: all 8 sets of Festival 8 including the musical costume and acoustic set will be simulcast live on JamOn, channel 17 on SIRIUS!!!

Not a subscriber? Good news… you can sign up for a free trial and hear the simulcast without spending a dime. Huge thanks to whoever is responsible for arranging this. Jam On!

Update: They Have Created Fire (October 27th @ 1:56 am)

If you're anything like me, you're somehow riveted by fire — and you'll definitely be making it a point to see this six-pack fire artists rumored to be appearing at Festival 8:

Update: Glitches, XML fun, & Gordon's Hotline (October 28th @ 1:18 pm)

The Wall

Looks like there was some sort of glitch in the album teaser on Phish.com for a bit when Apostrophe was killed — as the gallery was only showing living albums, and the Wall and Exile had gone missing. All seems back to normal now, though the Wall is indeed dead as seen at right.

Also appears that someone's having some fun with the xml file — with Michael Jackson changing to “Michael Jackson Is Alive“ and Yes changing to “Yes Yes Yes Yes.“ — but I'm not reading into either of those too much.

Speaking of having fun, Gordon's hotline (212-330-9092) has had two recent updates, the latest playing off the 100th album theories that are floating around.

And last but not least, I just checked into my flight for tomorrow. If anyone's on Southwest from Chicago at 12:35, hit me up for a free drink coupon. I'll be the dork carrying the poster tube.

Update: Jamtopia Meetup | Friday. Setbreak. Picnic Area. (October 28th @ 4:18 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

Okay, let's make this thing official.

After extensive reviews of the map and comments, I believe the best time and place to meet is setbreak on Friday at the picnic area. It's at the back of the concert field Page side.

That way if people want to hit the Honey Bucket or grab food or drinks or whatever it's all convenient.

Update: Get a FREE scoop of Ben & Jerry's (October 28th @ 5:24 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

I just got an email from Ben & Jerry's with some great news.

In addition to being huge fans of Jamtopia, Vermont's finest ice cream purveyors will be offering free scoops of Phish Food at Festival 8.

All you have to do is “particip8” in a social action with one of the charities at the WaterWheel booth (e.g. sign a petition, make a donation) to get your free delights.

Sweet.

Update: More Stage Photos (October 28th @ 6:25 pm)

Got some more stage pics, this time from Twitter user @briankarol:

I'm thinking they need more speakers!

Update: Festival 8 Wristband (October 29th @ 12:11 am)

Festival 8 wristband

I'm not sure if this is a staff wristband or just the standard issue, but either way it looks pretty sweet sauce. If the production values of this wristband are any indication this is really going to be one hell of a shindig.

Meanwhile, as I write this, Van Morrison and Zeppelin were killed off. Only 9 remain. Can't get there soon enough.

Update: Festival 8 Shout-out on Conan (October 29th @ 8:08 am)

Well this is surreal. Masterfully bearded Phish fan Rob Howard was in the Late Night crowd yesterday and got interviewed by Conan to “promote Phish.”

As you'll see when you watch the video, Conan had a little something extra planned to help get the word out about Festival 8.

Props to Rob for representing Phish — and the great state of Illinois :)

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

@ sruli
I really don’t see what static electricity has to do with anything.  Anywho, they will cover Skid Row self-tittied 18 and life can be a lesson to the young and old alike not to mention Sebastian Bach is the king of all that is rock, just ask Ricky and Bubbles!!!!  I’ve never seen Phish live but F8 will be my 41 show!  I heard TV On The Radio was opening first night!!!!

Aynsley Dunbar - Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Frank Zappa

What do I win?

@PinT
Is the drummer you speak of Ringo Starr? I know he played with T.Rex on a movie.

if they play a bowie album im gonna b dissapointed, all the people pushing and praying for a bowie album are on crack.  Period.  Bowie as great as he is/was, does not mean phish playing bowie is a good thing, i mean honestly try to imagine a full album while your sitting there for 50-90 mins, The Belway brothers and lady stardust would induce mass suicides and im not even gonna talk about changes, god shoot me now.  Bowie = bad idea.

I will be happy with whatever costume they decide to put on but i’m hopping for apostrophe simply because it is the phishiset thing left, maybe the phishiest thing on the list. just listen to the goofy lyrics, strange musical arrangements and overall mood of the record and tell me that it’s not perfect for this. plus zappa is one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century. if the band is going to honor anyone it should be him.

from PiNT: A single drummer was at least a temporary member of 3 of the bands that have a living LP in the list (although the drummer did not play on all 3 of the LP’s still listed, they did appear on at least one record / track by that band at some point in the band’s existence).  Can you guess the drummer?

The answer is Bill Bruford.  He played with Yes, King Crimson, and played with Genesis live during their Trick of the Tail tour.  One of my favorite drummers ever, and supposedly the same goes for Fishman.  Coincidentally, those three albums are my top three picks.

“Also I know I am the only person on the planet that has both Before and after science and Larks tongue in aspic in my cd palyer…”

no. you aren’t.

Cant we all just be friends?  Why do we need to label people.  I do agree that if people are only going just to get wasted and be annoying, they shouldn’t come…this isn’t a Dave show.  But why do all the older fans just assume that all of us newbies are going to just get wasted and be a nuisance?  Yes, I am technically a newbie since I have only been to two shows, of the 2009 tour, but I am also part of that generation who was too young to see them…I have been listening to them since the 5th grade, when I was 10 yrs old.  the last show I would have been able to go to was alpine 2004, when I would have been going into high school.  Wish I could have, but didn’t work out.  With that said, I hope the Let It Bleed theory plays out because how sick would monkey man be!!  See you all at 8 and also in Cincinnati….this will be SICK

George Clinton 12/30/03

I do like Eno, but if I had to pick an LP from him it would have been Another Green World.

For King Crimson, I’d have picked Red or (one of my favorite LP’s of all time, which would have been a great costume) Discipline.

Fripp / Eno works are amazing in general, I was really psyched to see Scary Monsters on the list when if first posted.

Anyway….

Here’s a stoopid trivia question for you (I must be a glutton for punishment, I know I’m gonna get a buncha crap for this, but since the knives ain’t flying today, here goes anyway)...

A single drummer was at least a temporary member of 3 of the bands that have a living LP in the list (although the drummer did not play on all 3 of the LP’s still listed, they did appear on at least one record / track by that band at some point in the band’s existence).  Can you guess the drummer?

who cares what everyone thinks will be good? the only thing that matters is what phish thinks would be great because they know themselves better than any of you so shut up!

@reynardMachine—Thanks for the explaination, that makes sense.

I personally hope that the 8th campground (even though there are not 8 campgrounds on the map) is called Oracular Spectacular, because that would mean that any of the 8 are as likely to be played (at least based on the ‘campground naming’ criteria).

However, if there are 8 LP’s alive, and one of them is MGMT, and there is no campground called ‘Oracular Spectacular’, then that makes the MGMT LP more likely to be the costume in my opinion.

I actually like that LP, I just don’t think it’s ‘worked enough’ to be given such a prestigious honor as being the Halloween costume by Phish.  I mean, if you asked me to put another LP in this group:

White Album
Quadrophenia
Remain in Light
Loaded

Oracular Spectacular would not be in my top 50 (or 500 picks).  Exile… absolutely.  Lamb… Definately.  Ziggy… Probably.  Hot Rats…. Likely.

Again, I like the LP well enough… it’s just not in that ‘masterpiece’ category… that just takes more time.

Oh well, as they say (or I hope they will):

Any rock can be made to roll,If you’ve enough of it to pay the toll

@Jauquin
“Also I know I am the only person on the planet that has both Before and after science and Larks tongue in aspic in my cd palyer…”

Not anymore, I have alot Enos stuff on my ipod and Lark tongues on disc as well, I espeically love the stuff Eno and Fripp did together.(oh and roxy music too)
I think its amazing Phish appeals to so many folks with differing and even opposing musical tastes, there just that good.

@theblimpalot
Totally agree, and like your top 3.

First of all, understand that I am not going to 8, but I really really wish I could.
That being said, in light of all the info out there, I think that if the leaked map was real, that the album they’re going to play is definitely NOT one of the 7 on the map. If MGMT was indeed the rumored 8th campground album AND it is not on the map, well, IMO that means this very well could be the album. I’ve listened to MGMT the last few weeks since this all began and I think it would be awesome, perfect, and way cool if Phish played this - it’s almost my top choice in fact…and btw, I had never listened to them before this whole album wall thing started. I have no idea what the people trashing it are thinking. I’m 35, been seeing phish since ‘94 and don’t have any animosity toward MGMT.  But then again, we all have our own opinions.
If the album they play is not MGMT – Oracular Spectacular, then in the interest of keeping with something not-so-predictable, I hope it will be one of these:

T.Rex – Electric Warrior
Television - Marquee Moon
Clash – London Calling

in regards to phish not playing MGMT because the word heroin is in it is kind of whack. fluffhead has the powerful pills line, that hits home to. and they played the shit out of that this summer.

also I know for a fact that NYE phish will be doing a 4 night run in miami… now buy me some foam!!!

ya know ive been meaning to post my comments about the costume album for a while, but i feel i like.. whats the point, other people have said the same things i feel as well as the opposite, so heres what i want to hear… something funky (horns) and dancy (anything, almost)

But the late night on halloween i want some dark nasty phish! old school shit, maybe open with a runaway jim, a foam… definitely, maybe a guelah papy, and its ice, throw in an esther, timber maybe, carini, and ya got top it off at the end with my personal favorite… a mind melting SOAM.  that would way make up for any angry phans pissed w/ an mgmt cover set (god forbid).

Just give me that dirty, dark, nasty, pure, unadulturated, exploratory Phish… “Phish w/ a P thats funky to me” ..kudo points to everyone who knows who said that… im going as jesus for the holliday, and i expect everyelse to be dressed up as well!

Hi, my name is Dizzy and I’m a NOOB!

I’m 21, so the last time i could’ve seen Phish before summer09 tour, i was just too young. However, I saw them at the Gorge when I finally had a chance, and it changed my perspective on live music completely. Being a musician myself, my band was there with me and we were just blown away. Having seen over 20 shows at the gorge, this was just a totally new experience. I was lucky enough to be with some of my cousins at the Gorge that have seen 65+ shows who filled me in on all the 411 when i had noobesque questions.

I’m well aware that Phish has an incredible following, and I respect fans like my cousins who follow them to the end. So what’s wrong with one more?

I’d say that for the amount of dickhead noobs there are that don’t get it and are there to just rage, there are just as many dickhead “1.0” fans that seem to feel as if they have some sense of ownership over a band. I’m ok with the title noob for now because i am one in the broad scheme of things, and i have to go through my “right of passage,” but the older fans should be taking some of us under their wings to show them what is out there in the world of PHISH, not shooing us away.

Love Music, Love Life, Love Each Other.

See you all at 8

Maybe I can add a fresh view on all of this.
I am not a big Phish fan but love the whole Halloween cover concept.I grew up in western Mass. and were friends with the band at an early age. They used to stay at my house when they played in Amherst.
The albums they have covered in the past, have been my top 10 albums and seing the 100 albums,it was very obvious to me that they share the same taste as I do and if they follow the same trend so far,it has to be Zappa,Bowie or The Clash.
Also I know I am the only person on the planet that has both Before and after science and Larks tongue in aspic in my cd palyer in my car.
Enjoy Bowie or Zappa folks.
Cant wait to hear the bootleg.

@matt from chicago
“lol dude please make it a nes
i have been on a super mario craze for the last month”

Dude, Im a recovering NES/SNES addict myself. My wife and I got a RetroDuo which plays both NES & SNES cartridges for like $50, and cartridges are $3-$12 on ebay. Totally wasted last summer indoors finishing all 3 Donkey Kongs and Super Metroid, we had a problem :)

@ matt from Chicago (and Todd)

I also remember a Rolling Stone interview with Trey years ago…I think he was supposed to name his favorite living guitarists or something like that.  He mentioned Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine…and his work on Loveless in particular.

Curious, I went out to buy the album.  I got into it a bit.  It grew on me over time.  And I was really intrigued to see how such music might be played live.  So, I was excited to see My Bloody Valentine on the Coachella list this past year.  I happened to be in the neighborhood and some friends of mine were at the festival.  I bought a Sunday ticket, found my friends and told them “We gotta go check out My Bloody Valentine!”

They followed my lead.  And we were all disappointed.  It was a loud, droning mess.  Turns out it’s one thing to enjoy MBV’s music when you are stoned on your couch…and quite another to enjoy it in a big party atmosphere.  We salvaged the evening by cutting out of there and going to watch Public Enemy’s set.

Long story short…I have no doubt that Trey and maybe Fishman love that album…but, it would be the worst possible call for a cover album at this point.  Given the other 99 choices, that album would be seen as a big disappointment.  And we’d all have a good hour and a half during the set to wonder what could have been with one of the other 99.

@iheardaHooverSing re: San Diego

If you’re ever near the racetrack in Del Mar you gotta eat at Milton’s Deli. Solid breakfast. Huge sandwiches. Not cheap but you’ll have leftovers.

Plus it’s named after my grandfather.

@PiNT: The MGMT comments are coming from the fact that there was an apparent leak on PT about there being 8 camps named after 8 albums.  The person who was supposedly leaking this info eventually listed all the albums.  This was posted BEFORE the map popped up online and it included all the albums listed on the map plus MGMT.

@Todd Levy from Chicago

lol dude please make it a nes
i have been on a super mario craze for the last month

but anways last night i downloaded the new remaster of
loveless and put on the head phones and just was blown away agian, i havent herd it in years and i just remebered trey talking about how much they loved that album

@Todd Levy"I will buy you Nintendo if they play this album.”
That is the funniest response yet , perfect. Hilarious!

I will look out for you in your Jamtopia shirt , would dig shaken your hand and sayin’ thank you..

On Saturday I will be Hunter S. Thomson (one of many Im sure) but just ask all the Hunters you see if they heard the hoover sing in san diego. If that doesnt work I will be the one levitating into the heart of The Borealis around 2am Sun morn.

@Allister
Also, I dont think the Heroin line is a discounting factor for mgmt (though i think there r many others),if u take it in context, it is asarcastic jab at the whole fantasy rock n’ roll lifestyle, ending with “we’ll choke on our own vomit, and that will be the end”
It is not glorifying it, but the opposite.

I still want Purple Rain or Yellow Brick Road. Im starting to see Sticky Fingers maybe just cause its such a classic, not quite enough variety for 40k plus people, maybe. Im starting to lose interest because…...
I just want to see Phish now! less than a week!!!!!!

One result of this whole thing, no matter what, is that I’m going to want to hear someone, somewhere, play some of these albums LIVE all the way through!  Sooo many good choices and obviously only one will be played, leaving me wanting for some of the others.

No matter what, I want to experience Marquee Moon live someday, somewhere down the road, and if it ain’t Phish now, I hope to see it happen one way or another.  Ditto to both Bowie, both Stones, Zappa, & Lamb.

However, if the costume is not London Calling, I may have to take up the cause myself & start a Clash cover band in order to make it happen.  I defy any of you to put that album on full tilt, think of being out there on that beautiful night & not get excited about the possibilty of groovin’ together to those tunes.  “Death or Glory”, “Spanish Bombs”, “Rudie Can’t Fail”, “Jimmy Jazz”, “Lost in the Supermarket”, “Clampdown”....What a serious party would be had by all!!!!  Plenty of grooves to take in any direction they like; Smiles from ear to ear, Everywhere!

And if LC does get the ax, and if Phish does in fact have the horns there next weekend, I hope that they at least entertain the idea of covering “Wrong ‘Em Boyo” as a one-off.  Believe me, none of you would be able to resist dancing on Cloud Eight to that one.

Alright, my lobbying is done.  Real preparations must now begin.  Just over 114 hours until takeoff from JFK!!

P.S. - During all of this album costume speculation I’ve lost a bit of focus on the fact that I’m going to see 7 more sets of pure PHiSH!  How sweet is THAT?!?!?

Probably means nothing, but out of the albums left, here are the ones which have exactly 8 tracks:

Black Sabbath “Paranoid”
Boston “Boston”
Bruce Springsteen “Born To Run”
Television “Marquee Moon”
Van Morrison “Astral Weeks”

Also, a fun little stat regarding myself - I just realized the last day of Festival 8 will be my 88th show!  Whoah - trippy!  :-)

Here’s a stream for <ahref=“http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/playlist/My_Bloody_Valentine_Loveless/18049690”>My Bloody Valentine Loveless</a>.

@matt from chicago: I will buy you Nintendo if they play this album.

All along the western front
People line up to receive.
She got the power in her hand
To shock you like you won’t believe.

...

The memories fade
Like looking through a fogged mirror
Decision to decisions are made
And not bought,
But I thought this wouldn’t hurt a lot.
I guess not

...

YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT!!!!!

Do what you feel now!

I am surprised no one else thinks the donuts/Sticky Fingers connection is a bit too coincidental to ignore.

Horns, donuts, can’t you hear me knockin, brown sugar, bitch, you got to move…....the album is covered with fun party songs. Half the songs have horns. And donuts make your fingers sticky!

@Gregg - I think you’re right.  I think they will leave 8 LP’s unbloodied going into Thursday, and 7 of those 8 will be campground names… the 8th being the costume.

My hunch is you’ll know exactly which LP is getting covered when you get to the grounds.

The question is… is it MGMT?  I still don’t know why everyone keeps grouping that with the other 7 LP’s on the blueprint.  If it’s just a rumor, then I say any of the other LP’s are still a possibility.

So, if this theory holds true, then those 7 are not the costumes but ‘near misses’.

Also, everyone needs to stop being to insulted by being called a new fan.  It’s okay.  Everyone likes you as long as you understand why this band is great and you’re not just going because you have nothing better to do than drink, puke and scream all weekend.  And with that understanding comes a realization that playing an LP that ‘doesn’t fit the mold’ (like Thriller, Purple Rain, or MGMT) based on the historical covers would be a bit surprising to those of us that do have that pre-conception.  That’s all.  I disagree with alot of the seasoned fans out here, but they make good points that I can respect, even if I think their points are ridiculous (such as Lamb causing people to fall asleep… sorry Gregg)!  ;)

So,  relax and have fun, life is too short.

ok back to the 100 album threoy
it could be my bloody valentine’s loveless

heres why
the bands name became a halloween movie
in the early 80s and they re made it in the 2000s in 3D
lead singers name :Bilinda Butcher
trey and fish rant and rave about it being one of their fav albums and one of the greatest recorded albums of the 90’s http://www.jimdero.com/News2001/GreatDec2MBV.htm

but i still hope for the lamb

@dan from KY:
I gotta disagree with you on this one. Their cover of Purple Rain from Dallas ‘94 is one of my top 10 played songs on iTunes.  I absolutely love it and think it would rock for them to cover Prince.

But when it comes to Prince I find people other absolutely get his music and love it, or hate him with a passion.

I think we need to drop the MGMT theories at this point, for the sole reason Trey would not sing about Heroin, it just hits too close to home.

It’s pretty well established there’s going to be a horn section. Maybe someone’s who bored could go through the remainders and tell us which ones have heavy horn sections?

(It’s 41 degrees and “feels like” 33 in Chicago right now. It’s 86 degrees and feels like heaven in Indio right now).

@J-ROCK

First of all, what are you even saying??

Secondly, the more money you put down, the lower the return on your investment in this case.  The return is static.  The only difference is you are increasing your investment which, in the end, lowers your returns. (Granted the returns are unquantifiable in this case,it stills sounds like a waste of money to me).

Finally, Cali is not full of noobs.  Many people have moved here from other states for the sheer kickassness of california.

I think they’ll play “The Yes Album”. Something challenging and keeping with the prog-rock roots of Phish.

For those saying the album doesn’t matter, you are so wrong.  I watched them do The White Album in ‘94.  It was one of my favorite albums at the time and I still consider that my favorite show that i was in attendence for. (and there have been some doozies that i have seen since ‘91)  Next year in Chicago they played Quadrophenia.  I am not a Who fan whatsoever and didn’t enjoy it at all.  Had there been bars, lookouts, art installations and whatnot, I would have been checking them out instead.  Sure it is Phish playing, but playing music you don’t like.

I am patiently awaiting one of the rumored 8 to get axed.  Until then, I am worried that I will have traveled 2000+ miles to be disappointed.  After the Coventry train wreck, I believe that it’s time to play something “generic” that will rock and be recognized by most in attendence.  Sure, they don’t technically “owe” us anything.  Go back and watch videos of Coventry though, then come back and tell me they really don’t “owe” us a better festival experience.  I have met, hung-out with and even wakeboarded with members of this band many times.  If i am wrong, then I will be surprised at how little I really know them after 18 years.

If the list is correct, and they are going with one of the 8, then it’s gotta be Exile.  If the 100th album theory is correct, then I’d expect something like Physical Graffiti, Houses of the Holy or Let It Bleed.

Alright, me and my friends have been thinkin about this for a ever since Festival 8 dates were releases, No Matter what album Phish covers on Halloween ....it would be insane to play a little trick on them while there giving us a treat on Halloweeen. We were thinkin of trying to get a flash freeze organized. This would entail everyone freezing, not moving at all for about 2 minutes. I think it would be best to pull off during the Halloween show, say around 7:45 or so? If anyones interested in helping out speading the word, let me know… .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Difficult, but doable… Septic

PLAY SOME SKYNARD MAN!!!!!

@J-rock…..is you Dj out of jail yet?? don’t be sucking your teeth at him no k=more dawg!

Think about folks in a weeks time we will be slowly rising (some of you will still be up ) and greeting the second day of the best festival Indio has ever seen!!

@treece
“In my opinion, the only thing that this map may really tell us (other than where shit is, obviously) is 7 albums that are not going to be the costume.”

Hmm - for some reason I hadn’t been thinking about it that way, but to me it makes sense. Much more sense than them playing one of those 7.

@mgmt sucks
LOL at your hurling about of the noob epithet. Call me what you will, but I have 20 years or so of happy Phish memories - some of which sadly contain douchebags who don’t get it. You seem to be a pretty angry person. I hope California has it’s traditional mellowing effect on you and you enjoy yourself at 8. I know I will.

Cheers!

Just thinking about Deer Creek 99 were they absolutely butchered Purple Rain. It was wrong and I never want to be apart of something like that again. Having said that I would go for just about anything, Ziggy being tops. I’m just going to dance and imbibe.

@treece
“Again, just my humble opinion on the matter.  I’m hoping for more of a “Ive got my giant hit discoteque album, I empty a bottle and I feel a bit free” type of vibe….if ya know what I mean.”

Well said, my friend! :)

i really hope it is thriller….

For all you oldb’s and noob’s and in between b’s…  By the way, I think it is hilarious that there is an underground Phish hierarchy of fan worthiness.  I won’t be at the festival, however, I will be attempting to stream the show.  There are 29 albums left, possibly 30 if you buy the 100th album theory.. And I think each one of them have their place.  The fact of the matter is….  It’s Phish.  They are the greatest band ever, and the show will be awesome…  Name another band that can hold it’s own festival, play someone elses music… and nail it.  I can’t.

Have a “Foam” for me…

See you in Cincinnati.

Reece

why wouldnt the 100 th album be jay-z blueprint… 99 albums but jay-z isnt one and they have def covered his music in brooklyn

@forbinva

In my opinion (and that’s all it is…my silly little opinion), “The Wall” is not going to be played because it is too BIG, in a sense.  Floyd played this in it’s entirety many times & it just seems like it wouldn’t fit Phish, to me.  Don’t get me wrong, it IS a Masterpiece, but it is also quite long, intense & downright depressing for the most part.  I think it would bog things down for a while, and I don’t think that’s what this fest is all about.  I think they wil be looking for something that creates more of a good time party atmosphere, and “The Wall” is a bit too serious for that.

Again, just my humble opinion on the matter.  I’m hoping for more of a “Ive got my giant hit discoteque album, I empty a bottle and I feel a bit free” type of vibe….if ya know what I mean.

THEY OWE ME TOO!!!  I bought 10 tickets just for me to have 10 camping spaces.  I also figured that the more money I personally invested, the larger the return on my investment.  That being said, Fake NOOBS!!! Cali is full of NOOB jobs. I will rush the stage if they don’t play Jimmy Buffet’s Banana Wind or any album from the Infant Sorrow catalogue.  BTW I am traveling to Indio for the Eastest ma’fa’kin space in the place, YO!  YA KNOW WHA’ WHIKKETY WHICKEY WHA’ I SAYN’!

forbinva-
it won’t be the wall because
a) they’ve already done a whole pink floyd album
b) the wall has already been performed in its entirety many times by different people and it would be pretty anti-climactic
c) as brilliant as it is, it’s not a particularly fun album
d) the album would require a lot of production, extra musicians, and a chorus of background vocalists to be performed properly

but mostly i think B is the reason. the Wall performed in its entirety = been there, done that.

its not going to be thriller either guys ,so forget it. please. drop it. it aint gonna happen.

i wish i was as certain about MGMT but the album continues to loom ominously. when i see an axe through one of those little dorks’ heads i will sleep better at night.

No offense guys…but WHY?!? all of this noise over which album…I remember everyone being surprised in Atlanta ‘96 when they played Talking Heads. Don’t get me wrong…I am not a die hard Talking Heads fan..but it turned out pretty good.

Quite Frankly…I am just so stoked to be going that they could stand on stage and play Yessongs sung with a manly baritone and nothing else but a triangle and a vacuum cleaner and I’d still be happy for that hour or so….

So on that note..safe journies, tune up, relax and just enjoy the show! I will be there with bells on!

MGMT SUCKS: “Yes they do owe us”

Ummm, no they don’t. They said “Hey, we’re putting on a show.” They never, EVER, in ANY interview or article, asked ANYONE to come.

I ,too, am coming from Ohio and could honestly give two shits what the album is going to be, other that wanting to know for knowings sake. I’m not a fan of a great many of the albums that are still alive. They’re playing 8 sets. It will rule ten kinds of ass. I went to IT, and spent 4 times the ticket price on travel and drugs alone, and it was worth every penny. Ditto for Bonnaroo.

Try to stop calling everyone noob. I get the distinct impression that we’re ALL older than you.

@mgmt sucks

The reason I didn’t get tickets is because I can’t go. I am fine with you voicing your opinion. That’s what this is all about… I understand that those who made the trek to Coventry only to be “let down” have the right to be disappointed. But all of that is in the past. We should just embrace how incredible ‘09 has been and have a great time knowing that the guys are back and playing wonderfully.

Also, MGMT would most definitely NOT be my first choice at all. I can’t stand those guys, and watching them perform live is painful. I get it… Although, I do believe that Phish could make it amazing.  Not as amazing as they could make Jimi, Bowie, etc. but they do have the talent to do it..

Anyway, have fun you guys!

@forbinva from Va Bch, VA

they already covered a pink floyd album

im thinking the 100th album
is my bloody valentines-loveless

in the pharmers almanac vol 6
page 308

trey talks to rolling stone about that album
almost being played but jon and trey were out voted
for loaded

@josh You didn’t get tickets? It’s not sold out. Yes they do owe us. The ones who traveled cross country and support them. They make a living cause of us. Ticket prices have doubled. I’m going from ohio i expect alot after coventry and scalpers all getting tickets this year. Ps i do have the right to voice my opinion. You guys can like it or not. If i want to walk out cause of who they played so be it. I paid the 225$!!! I CAN DO WHAT I WANT

you noob wook trendy hipsters and your MGMT. My girlfriend blows yours out of the water. Plus we don’t share jeans. ouch noobs.

There is probably no way they play Talking Heads again, but you heard it here first. “My lips are sealed” is a line from Psycho Killer, and wouldn’t this Killer seem just so appropriate as the 100th album…TALKING HEADS ‘77. No way they play one of the 8 “finalists”. See you all at MSG!!! Have fun. ‘77—you heard it here first.

@todd

if you’re there I’ll have a foam for ya! Thanks for the great blog.

It’s almost festi time!!!!

Still feeling Ziggy!

I listened to the MGMT album (thanks grooveshark) and was surprised to learn that I have actually heard a couple of those tunes before….while playing Shaun White’s snowboarding on XBox with my kid.

I say this….go for it.  It could be fun.  And some of you cats need to lighten up…go have some fun at the shows.

My personal fave would be Yes, but don’t know who would sing.

And while I am at it, I would have loved to have seen Pantera’s Cowboys From Hell on the list.  Trey shredding Dime’s riffs would have been silly!

100th album theory… jeff beck blow by blow , (killing the albums blow by blow)

only van halen today,  18 days ago only peter gabriel.  looks like another pattern.  I would love to hear trey shred on eruption though

@mgmt sucks

What? They don’t owe you anything. Phish aren’t your slaves. Stop acting like you’re entitled to whatever you want when it comes to Phish.
It actually blows my mind that somebody would be so fucking ungrateful as to say that Phish OWES them.

Are you people forgetting that you’re going to a PHISH FESTIVAL AND A HALLOWEEN SHOW?

I didn’t get tickets, but I can tell you that no matter what, I’d be dancing in pure awe of these guys. You guys should be grateful you even get to go and that Phish is even back.

Not one person is gonna walk off the field in protest.  Its just a bunch of chest thumping and hot air.

Phan version 0.91 (open beta)

i find the whole MGMT album flat with the exception of kids. and the only time i liked that song was in Travis Rices’ epic snowboard film “Thats It Thats All”...So pumped for 8 see you on the west coast.

peace.

@seriousoldphan

i’m what these crazies would call a “noob”—only been listening to phish for a few years and only been to a handful of shows.

but FUCK do i love ‘em.

we all do, right?

so let’s all just have fun and enjoy the hell outta next wknd.

i just wanted to say thanks for your post. you are the man! (or woman!)

Whatever they play - it is PHiSH playing it.

Seriously! It is so funny to watch everyone start throwing internet slime and calling others Noobs!

If anyone is disappointed by anything they do I want to remind you of one little detail…..

Anyone remember this day….

“We’re done”

I KNOW I am not the only one here that dropped everything and trekked acoss the country to see Coventry, and to see poor Trey hardly able to hit the notes (See Guyute - or pretty much anything from the ‘final’ show)

When they said they would play again, that was enough to light my spark and whatever they play it WILL rock.

Anoher festival AND Halloween to boot - I say THANK YOU PHiSH!

You walk back to your tent - that is OK by me, but in retrospect you will regret that choice.

There is a reason they want to play what they pick, so give it a whirl, I mean - what the hell else are you doing Halloween night when PHiSH is right in front of you anyway??????

So go ahead an sizzle me over the internet if you want - but as a really long time fan of the band who loves ALL of the band and fans - new or old - just keep in mind it is all about having a good time and being good to one another.

Peace.

Trey isn’t going to sing about “shooting heroin” so forget about mgmt.

Wow, I just played the Chicago album, and it ROCKS!!! This would be an awesome choice, especially with horns.

@Allister

I’ve seen a pretty good version of the map and all it says in between 15A & 15C is CP15, which I believe stands for “car park”.  All of 1, 14, 15 & 16 are labeled DP for Day Parking.

In my opinion, the only thing that this map may really tell us (other than where shit is, obviously) is 7 albums that are not going to be the costume.  Makes the most sense to me, but of course I may be waaaayy of base.  Who knows??  But if that theory is correct, then subtract those 7, as well as some of the obvious soon-to-be-axed albums like Nevermind, BTR, Modern Lovers, etc., & I think we’re starting to get a real sense of what the choices are.

I’m still pulling for London Calling with Marquee Moon & Ziggy as my other choices, but I will truly be happy with whatever it is.  At this point I would rather not have any more “leaks” or “inside info”.  I want to take it all in when I arrive!

And by the way….I’m going to win that Horseshoe Tournament!!

Re:  Phish playing MGMT

I’ve been a Phish fan for a long time so I know they almost always do the unexpected, but it just seems so unlikely that they would cover the MGMT album.  Not because it’s not a “classic album” and not because it “didn’t influence them” (all valid points) but because I just can’t imagine that all 4 members would agree on that particular album.  I can see maybe one or two of them digging the album enough to want to cover it, but all 4?  Seems like kind of a stretch.  Who knows?  Maybe they listened to the album on the tour bus all summer tour and it grabbed them enough to want to cover it, or maybe they watched their Bonnaroo set and were blown away, but that seems doubtful.

Not to mention, as Trey stated in that interview, he started learning an album, then called Page and they decided they weren’t gonna do it.  I just can’t see Trey learning something like Ziggy Stardust or Apostrophe and then they change their mind to play MGMT instead.  It just doesn’t make sense.  But then again, Phish rarely makes sense which is why we love them so much. :-)

And one last thing to all the MGMT haters - while I do agree that sonically something like Radiohead or King Crimson would sound incredible, I’m not going to be sitting down with my eyes closed listening to the Phish cover set. I would prefer to dance my ass off during it.  I dare anyone to stay up dancing the whole cover set to either of those two albums.  At least MGMT has got a beat to it. I don’t think many people would want to sit down during it.  Walk out - maybe.  But sit down?  No way.  :-)

@gregg

This is the one you know as “mgmt sucks”’ girlfriend… I actually love MGMT and would die if Phish covered them.  I may be tough to look at and weigh 300 lbs (tough for me to move around a lot) but I would love to dance with you gregg when they cover “Electric Feel” ;-)  I hope to see you there, hun… byeeeee

@r from Palm Desert

Thanks for the link to traffic article!
I was concerned because my wife has to work until 11:30am on Friday the 30th. So we wont be arriving until after 2pm and was really hoping theres not a 2 hour line to get in. Article seems more geared towards people that live there but if your sayin’ Cochella only took 15 minutes to get in then might not be to bad. I just wanna have time to set up camp, re-up etc… before and not feel rushed, heres hopin’

Any seceret back ways or short cuts from San Diego?

@ j-dog

The Soft Bulletin is one of my Top 5 favorite albums of all time.  What a trip that record is.  I almost suggested the same thing…but talk about an album that would polarize the crowd.  That is definitely an album you either love or hate with a passion There’s no in-between.  And I have a feeling that most people in attendance would hate it.

Would have been nice if they included it on the wall of 99, though.  Just to maybe turn some people on to it.

you’re gonna have to google it man.

I think the map can be both real and fake.  Real in all the black and white stuff, where is the concert grounds, the vending, the security, etc.  and then someone got their hands on that and photoshop overlaid the colorful album names and street/song title names.  So even if all those album finalists in there are a hoax from someone, the underlying map would still be real and subject to the promoter’s/band’s copyright.

... or it’s all real.  Guess I better start listening to MGMT.

i agree with gregg. i’m not a “fan” of MGMT per say, but in light of the fest, i’ve listened to the album a few times and it is SUPER FUN. i would LOVE to hear phish’s brilliant take on it! haters—give it another listen with an open mind.

hey, remember—no matter what they play, it’s still PHISH playing! it’ll be awesome no matter what it is.

AHHHH CAN"T WAITTTTTTTT!

article in the local paper about traffic:

http://www.mydesert.com/article/20091023/LIFESTYLES0101/91023022/0/BUSINESS05/Indio-police-release-traffic-information-for-Phish-Festival-8

don’t worry folks, it takes like fifteen minutes to get into coachella fest. they’ve got their shit together pretty nicely.

also i don’t think the map has any relevance to the winner, because all the best albums didn’t make the list (marquee moon, ziggy), so duh. if it is one of the campground’s album, we all know where to party that night. getting real close.

also i’m going to be working (?) an in-campground arts and crafts shack, with a lot of other young local desert goofballs. add that to your list of fun things to do! we’re makin’ dreamcathcers! maybe didgeridoos. a great place to walk yourself down to if you took too much acid and they play boston or something rough like that. we’ll have our hearts open for you.

@greg. My girlfriend cant stand mgmt. She has tatse unlike you you noob

Whoever said My Morning Jacket was a glaring omission, that’s a decent point, though the obvious omission from my perspective (in this canonical list) was anything Flaming Lips.  Either Clouds Taste Metallic, Soft Bulletin, or Yoshimi—Page would have had a field day with the keys, plus the contrasts and peaks and valleys of songs like What Is The Light, Do You Realize, Race for the Prize, etc, would be oh so choice.

Love Pavement, but was just a touch surprised to see them given the antipathy from many indie fans towards the whole phish concept (plus Malkmus’ digs against Trey and phans on his first solo album).  Just goes to show the boys can have a sense of humor.

I like… don’t understand it… why are’t the Kings of Leon up there?... those guys are soooooo hot…. I love those albums… Phis is ugly… they should try to look more like them and play like them… they’re soooo like better and junk… That would like… totally kick ass and stuff!  Yayyeee Phush!!!

Hi Phisheads

Been enjoying checking this page a dozen times a day. I love the concept. Building the anticipation nicely.

I’m travelling all the way from France for the festival. I’m not that familiar with Phish, but I’m meeting some friends there who are die-hard Phisheads. It’s sure gonna be one hell of a party !

My money is on London Calling - one of my favorite albums - or Ziggy. Nevermind and Astral Weeks are my favorite albums of the remaining bunch but my hopes aren’t too high about it.

Benjo

“campground”

Where is this campground map?

Sunshinedaydream- I’m traveling from Cleveland…..it’s gonna be a wild trip…..

@mgmt sucks
“If its MGMT I’m walking back to my tent.”

If it’s MGMT, I’ll be dancing with your girlfriend ;)

Say what you want, MGMT would be a party! Much more fun than Genesis, Jimi, King Crimson or Radiohead. Bring on the flames. Those records would not be half the party MGMT would be.

And no, I don’t care about their place in history blah blah blah.

That said, I bet we’ll see an MGMT cover but not the record. Electric Feel would be awesome.

But I still don’t buy this final 8. London Calling is the clear choice and has been since well before the 99 were brought out. Until they start playing something else on 10/31, it’s gonna be London Calling.

i am so excited for festival 8, i’m traveling cross country for this wonderful event and can’t wait to bask in melodies of phish.

so heres the leaked ‘campground’ map.
whether this is all true or not, whose to say but the band themselves.

whatever album they choose to cover i will love and dance to it the same.

@PiNT
(Glad to see ‘Lamb’ will at least make the final 8, but sorry to see no London Calling… I was pulling for you Gregg!)

Thanks, my friend! :)

I am surprised by the list (if indeed it is real). I’m not surprised Lamb is on it, but it just doesn’t seem full of albums that are very likely.

Looking at the original 99, I would have left American Beauty, Thriller, Led Zeppelin IV, Ziggy, Police and of course London Calling, which I do think would make the best set.

I dunno - feels like a weird final 8 to me. They aren’t doing Radiohead or King Crimson, so why have them on the list - it’s not even really debatable.

They aren’t doing the Dead either, but having it on the final 8 would have been hilarious for heated debates. I guess I would have expected a final 8 where any one of the records was a real possibility.

Hmm - yeah not what I expected which is why I thought it was fo sho fake when I saw it.

@GMahal
You’re awesome, if insane and underexposed to Bob Marley - and I hope you don’t have a wall against Stevie Wonder, the best live act I have ever seen (including two Gamehendge shows, the White Album, 6 Red rocks shows, the Warfield, etc, etc). In any event, I bet we’d get along if only because of your namesake - when I lived in Humboldt, we saw a TON of Garaj Mahal shows. There’s a band that kicks ass. Cheers!

i vote chicago transit authority….that album rocks and if they had a horn section it would be a killer album to cover :)

OK here’s my digg on the “leaked” campsites:

I wouldn’t be surprised if they took extreme measures to throw us off again. Maybe they’ll kill one of those 7 off in the next few days and quickly change one of the campsites to another album. I know it’s short notice, but i bet the crew could manage changing one of the sites in a week… I mean, they’ve been doing such a good job at keeping the secret so far that it wouldn’t shock me to see them go all out to fix that little leak.

The other thing is how strange it is to have 7 sites, with everything being so heavily themed on 8. This makes me believe there is an 8th album which will be the one played, meaning noneee of those albums on the map will be played. sort of a bummer cause exile would rockkk.

INCOMPLETE MAP?
Ok, so I looked at the map again and I am staring to think its an unfinished version of the map . Mostly because according to the key at the top of the map, areas 14, 15 and 16 are also designated as camping areas but are not named as albums.
If they are overflow camping I can see why they might have not named them but think it is much more likely that this is an unfinished version of the map that was leaked. Makes sense cause it probably be easier to get a hold of ,and leak ,a deleted obsolete file than the final one.

Just a thought , but then we could be dealing 10 or more album campgrounds(or at least 8) which would be much less revealing.

I don’t buy the “8 finalists” as campgrounds thing.  I think its a great scheme for finding your tent or RV much like burningman… but if anything it seems like the campground name thing is more of a “runner up” ... I looked at the map a bit… are there actually 8 campgrounds or just the 7 named ones?

The MGMT album is good but it seems a bit premature to put them in the same company as the albums they have previously covered… lots of bands put out a great album or two and are never heard from again.

@PiNT:

Can you see those 2 words in between 15A and 15C? Judging by the other campgrounds one can assuming 15s are either another camp ground or merchants.  If the 15s is the other campground than that unreadable text by 15A might be the name.

I don’t understand why My Morning Jacket- “Z” wasn’t on this list. I mean, maybe they just don’t like that album, but I listened to it again last night and it definitely functions best as a whole suite of songs. Also, The songs range from spacy to hard rock to mellow to almost reggae rock (police style) with “Off The Record”. Dondante would own. Also, I don’t think Pavement- “Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain” was adequately mourned when it was dropped. That album is SO good and it would have worked, man, think of the jam they would pull off on the final track “Fillmore Jive”.

How about this theory?

15 albums over the next 5 days gets us to 15 albums on Wednesday night - the day before alot of people are leaving or arriving for the fest.

The 7 rumored campsite names are eliminated upon arrival to the Fest leaving 8.

7 for phish to dispose of (maybe witha a cover form each album) and 1 for the cover set -

This way the leak hasn’t really ruined anything and we still don’t know the album when we arrive onsite

what a crappy final 8 given the entire list of 99

I promise I’m not being condesending or confrontational here… but I beg to differ.

Other than MGMT, I think picking those 8 LP’s is a great indication of this band’s influences and their knowledge of music.

What other band, either existing or in the past, ever be so bold as to realiscally claim they could cover any of those 8 LP’s.  What a great swath of the many styles of rock and roll, and all of them represent widely hailed masterpieces of thier individual genre’s.  Kudos, boys!

Now, I’m a bit concerned that I can’t find solid evidence of the MGMT reference on the map, because if there are indeed 8 campgrounds (which makes sense, given the festival’s name), and the 8th is something we haven’t been leaked to via the blueprint, its pretty much a tell that it will be the one played.  I can’t imagine they leave 8 LP’s ‘on the wall’ into the festival, then only name 7 campgrounds… that would basically tell everyone what the cover was going to be upon entering.  I guess it would have been nice to have an element of surprise at the time of the actual set, but its going to be amazing in any case.

Especially if its the Lamb or Lark’s Tongue.

;)

it will be Stones - Exile main Street

@Geggles

I’m curious to know about ticket sales as well.  My totally uninformed guess from the beginning was in the 45-50K range.  Couldn’t imagine they’d get any more than that.  Three things working against them: (1) West coast; (2) Not in the summer; (3) Lot of peeps are broke as a joke right now.

If its MGMT I’m walking back to my tent. I’m not traveling cross country to hear that hipster dog shit. They owe the phans who saw the disgrace of Coventry way to much. They don’t deserve to be covered by Phish..

As for those saying MGMT wasn’t on the map, it might have been. Look at #16 on the map, there’s a blurry name down there. It’s 2 long words and heavily resemble the words “Oracular Spectacular”.

I don’t see the Oracular Spectacular text, I’m scouring the damn map and I just don’t see it anywhere.

#16 is a day parking lot, not a camping area.  The ‘white out’ area immediately above it is the ‘La Quinta Ridge Mobile Estates’, which is surrounded by the polo club (and would have made an excellent place to stay… I shoulda looked into renting one).

I’ve actually overlaid the leaked site map bluprint over a google earth map of the grounds, and they line up perfectly.  I am 95% certain the leaked map is authentic.

So, unless someone smarter than me is willing to hand hold me to the evidence that MGMT is indeed referenced on the site blueprint, I’m not counting them as a ‘definate’ in the final 8.

I had no idea that Van Hagar ever played a Litte Feat tune.. how does it sound, i wonder??

I think the list of the final 8 supposedly leaked on the map is bunk.
what a crappy final 8 given the entire list of 99… and.. i guess..
if it’s an album i don’t like, there’s still 7 other sets of Phish that I’m sure I’ll love until the album they pick grows on me.. Unless it’s MGMT. In which case, if they cover that every time they reprise it at other shows, I’ll have an excuse to take a leak and grab a beer.

welp we obviously have no idea what there playing but guessing what gets eliminated next is feasible.
Id say Van Morrison , Nirvana, and Minutemen all have a good chance of being murdered today. Modern Lovers and Brian Eno are also big stretches and could be up for the ax very soon. The first 4 songs on the Eno album are fantastic though.
The deaths will have to slow a little though, cant keep going at 3-4 a day or we’ll run out of albums too soon.
