Introduction: The Phish Halloween Album Teaser (September 28th, 2009)

Today the Festival 8 site on Phish.com was updated with yet another teaser animation, only this time instead of teags sayg the location, they're teasing the Halloween cover album.

The new site features a haunted gallery of 99 albums, each a possibility for the musical costume, and each a possible victim of an unfortunate demise.

A handful of albums have already been killed off, and there should be a lot more killing over the next few weeks as the welcome card promises Phish will “play the last record left alive.”

Gotta admit I was pleased to see both of my top choices — Appetite for Destruction and Exile on Main Street — made the list. Figure Appetite is a long-shot but Exile could have a chance.

Place card for Phish Halloween album teaser

Though I doubt this will be quite as uproar-inducing as the Halloween map, it's sure to keep the Festival 8 buzz going strong. Plus it'll also give you a chance to study up on the remaining possibilities (rumor has it there will be 8 albums left when the fest begins) and get familiar with the material, whatever it may be.

WARNING: Spoilers & speculation below. Proceed at your own risk.

Update: The Grateful Living (September 29th @ 12:11 am)

I'm sure this means nothing, but one eagle-eyed fan has noticed that the Grateful Dead are listed as the “Grateful Living” in the xml config file that's driving the gallery. Hmmm… certainly wouldn't mind if American Beauty is “the last record left alive.”

Update: The Grateful Living Part 2 (September 29th @ 2:41 am)

There's a comment below about the Grateful Dead thing pointing out that the word “living” is used in the xml file to denote albums that are still in the mix. I realized that, but in this case it's not just the <stateofbeing> node that says living, but the <title> node as well.

That said, the reader's comment opened my mind up to a much more likely theory. Someone did a search and replace on that xml file, replacing all occurrences of “dead” with “living” — only they didn't select match case — and so the “Grateful Dead” became the “Grateful living.” Note also the lowercase “l” which I incorrectly noted as an uppercase “L” above.

So in effect, I'm still sure it means nothing… other than that speculating on Phish teaser animations is a great way to waste time.

Update: The Grateful Living Part 3 (September 29th @ 1:36 pm)

The Grateful Dead are now listed correctly in the .xml file. Case closed.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 10:36 pm)

Born to Run Languedoc

Strange things are afoot in the haunted gallery, as a number of album covers have started to get a Phish-themed makeover.

  • Phish are in the sardine can on Hello Nasty
  • The hot dog vendor on Pretzel Logic is sporting a viking hat
  • The Boss is playing a Languedoc
  • Trey and Page are moving a keyboard on Moving Pictures
  • T-Rex is now T-rey
  • Tom Petty is wearing a Phish shirt
  • Mike Gordon has joined the Ramones (added 10/7)
  • Rage Against the Machine is now Page Against the Machine (added 10/9)
  • Fishman is on the cover of Exile on Main Street (added 10/10)
  • Ghost in the Machine is now Story of the Ghost in the Machine (added 10/15)
  • AC/DC Back in Black is now AC/DC Bag (added 10/15)
  • Page is in the rearview mirror on the Minutemen album (added 10/16)
  • Fishman's head has been added to one of the Electric Ladyland ladies (added 10/16)

Just as it was starting to feel really repetitive, this is a great twist to keep things interesting.

Update: Phish-themed Album Covers (October 6th @ 11:36 pm)

Original Blind Faith album cover

A commenter below just inquired if anyone noticed that a “new album” had been added to the gallery

Well it's a new album cover, but not a new album. That's the original cover image from Blind Faith's self-titled debut. Rumor has it the naked young girl is Ginger Baker's daughter, but whoever it is she didn't make the cut. The cover was banned in the USA where it was sold with the “bland, but shopper-friendly, band photo.”

Update: Album YouTube Links (October 7th @ 3:23 pm)

Well this is interesting. Some of the albums in the xml config file have been updated to include YouTube links.

I'll give you one guess how many albums got the special treatment…

  1. AC/DC, Hells Bells from Back in Black
  2. Aerosmith, Sweet Emotion from Toys In The Attic (by Gordon/Kottke)
  3. Arcade Fire, Wake Up from Funeral
  4. David Bowie, Oh You Pretty Things from Hunky Dory
  5. David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust from Five Years Live
  6. Led Zeppelin, Going to California from Zeppelin IV
  7. The Band, Up On Cripple Creek from The Band
  8. Clash, Clampdown from London Calling

I sure hope these aren't the finalist because they seem to have forgotten GNR :)

Update: Festival 8 Numerology (October 7th @ 7:17 pm)

Just came across some interesting numerology observations from PTer Sixtwenty294.

8 ball
  • Moving Pictures is Rush's 8th album
  • Escape is Journey's 8th album
  • Kiss Alive II is Kiss's 8th album
  • Tonight's the Night is Neil Young's 8th album
  • Goodbye yellow brick road is Elton John's 8th album (including a live album)
  • Hot Rats is Frank Zappa's 8th album (including comilations) Thx Jeff G.

Plus, they changed 8 album covers — Blind Faith, T.Rex, Springsteen, Beastie Boys, Ramones, Steely Dan, Rush, and Tom Petty. And as noted above, 8 albums have videos.

That's a whole lot of eights. Nice work Sixtwenty294.

Update: Albums with 8 Songs (October 8th @ 12:11 am)

Got some more 8's thanks to a comment from Bryan Lasky — the albums with 8 songs

  • Boston | Boston
  • Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
  • Black Sabbath | Paranoid
  • Metallica | Master Of Puppets
  • Led Zeppelin | IV (Zoso)
  • Pixies | Come On Pilgrim
  • Van Morrison | Astral Weeks
  • Television | Marquee Moon
  • Leonard Cohen | I'm Your Man (eliminated)
  •

Update: YouTube Links Part 2 & 8 Letter Names (October 8th @ 4:55 pm)

A few things to note here.

First, the mis-linked Arcade Fire and Clash videos from yesterday were updated in the xml. Plus, a bunch of additional video links were added some time today. These include…

  1. Frank Zappa, Cosmik Debris from Apostrophe
  2. Led Zeppelin, Misty Mountain Hop from Zeppelin IV
  3. Metallica, Master of Puppets from Master of Puppets
  4. Minutemen, Jesus And Tequila from Double Nickels On The Dime
  5. Nirvana, Lithium from Nevermind
  6. Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb from The Wall
  7. Radiohead, Everything In Its Right Place from Kid A
  8. Rush, YYZ from Moving Pictures
  9. Violent Femmes, Blister In The Sun from Violent Femmes
  10. Yes, I've Seen All Good People from The Yes Album

Next, if you've been enjoying the numbers game and were miffed that there were 10 new videos and not 8, there's a comment from Lorenzo below that I think you'll like — it's the artists on the list with 8 letter names

  • Bob Dylan
  • Bob Seger
  • Brian Eno
  • Firehose
  • Pavement

Update: Electric Ladyland Album Cover (October 8th @ 8:13 pm)

Official Electric Ladyland album cover
Original Electric Ladyland album cover
Linda Eastman Hendrix Experience Alice in Wonderland

Here's an update for the dudes in the front row, and this one actually is riveting.

The official Electric Landyland album cover (left) has been replaced with the original UK cover (center) featuring a harem of late sixties babes. Once again, banned in the USA and elsewhere.

Notably, Hendrix didn't want this cover or the blurry red and yellow mugshot. Instead he'd requested they use a Linda Eastman photo (right) of the Experience sitting with some kids on the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park. Given a vote, I'd have chosen the babes.

Update: Links to Album Streams (October 9th @ 12:52 pm)

For your listening pleasure, I've stated linking up some of the albums below to free, legal streams on Grooveshark. Unfortunately most of their playlists are incomplete or have tons of duplicates, so you basically need to create each one by hand which is time consuming.

That said, if anyone's feeling ambitious and wants to take on an album or two it'd be greatly appreciated. Just shoot me an email or post a comment with the playlist link.

Update: Fall Tour Dates Announced (October 9th @ 10:32 am)

Nothing to do with albums or 8's, but Fall Tour Dates have been announced.

Update: Video Links Part 3 (October 9th @ 1:30 pm)

Got another handful of additional video links that were added some time today. These include…

  1. Blind Faith, Can't Find My Way Home from Blind Faith
  2. Genesis, In the Cage from Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  3. Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced from Are You Experienced
  4. King Crimson, Talking Drum from Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. Van Morrison, Cyprus Avenue from Astral Weeks

Update: Albums with Horns (October 13th @ 12:31 am)

The rumor mill is rapidly churning with the notion that there will be horns at Festival 8, presumably for the musical costume. Here's a list of albums you might be hearing if that rumor pans out…

  • Curtis Mayfield | Superfly Soundtrack
  • Chicago | The Chicago Transit Authority
  • David Bowie | Ziggy Stardust
  • Frank Zappa | Apostrophe
  • Frank Zappa | Hot Rats
  • Michael Jackson | Thiller
  • Miles Davis | A Tribute To Jack Johnson
  • Pink Floyd | The Wall
  • Radiohead | Kid A
  • Steely Dan | Pretzel Logic
  • T.Rex | Electric Warrior

  • The Band | The Band (aka Brown Album)
  • The Clash | London Calling
  • The Police | Ghost in the Machine

Meanwhile, I'm generally averse to Hitler but the video above cracks me up every time so I'm just embedding to avoid having to go to YouTube — and for the 3 people who still haven't seen it.

Update: Mike's Hotline Hint & more (October 13th @ 11:15 pm)

A few things to report, aside from the fact that CCR, ZZ Top, and the Ramones were killed off today.

First, Mike's hotline is offering a very Gordonesque “hint” at the Halloween album — singing a line from the chorus of the Go-Gos Out Lips Are Sealed. Personally I prefer the Hilary / Haley Duff version. Hear Mike for yourself at 212-330-9092.

Added 10/14 @ 5:45 pm Lots of message board chatter that lips could be a thinly veiled Stones reference.

Added 10/19 @ 8:23 pm “Our lips are sealed” is a lyric in the song Elevation by Television. Coincidence?

Second, I've started a gallery of Festival 8 posters that's already got great art by folks like AJ Masthay, Jamie Huntsman, and Not Pollock.

Finally, I'm doing a Series II Page bobblehead giveaway. This one features Page as The Chairman of the Boards, my favorite of all the bobbles so far.

Update: Phish Festivalography on Sirius (October 14th @ 12:10 am)

Not sure if I'm late to the game on this but I just got wind of a cool sounding show on Sirius called “Phish Festivalography.” It's a four part series starting Thursday the 15th at 9:00 pm Eastern (with replay at 2 am).

Hosted by Jonathan Schwartz from “Gone Phishin',” the exclusive series will cover Phish's festival history in words and music. Sounds promising.

Update: Miner's Case for Ziggy Stardust (October 14th @ 3:00 pm)

Spiders from Mars Fleece

Mr. Miner over at Phish thoughts has made the case for Ziggy Stardust:

For the elaborate theatrics and space-aged costumes alone, Ziggy Stardust would make a superb spectacle for the Halloween set. But beyond the glamorous show this album could provide, the music and lyrics of Bowie’s record fit perfectly with Phish’s place in time.

Read Miner's full post for more.

In other news, Zeppelin IV was just eliminated! Kinda figured that one would stick around for a while but alas, it's gone.

Update: The Album Elimination Set (October 14th @ 5:15 pm)

Got what I think might be a fun concept that revolves around the premise / rumor that there will be 8 albums left at Festival time.

Imagine you have just woken up from a dream. In that dream you were at Festival 8 and the band threw a major curve-ball 2nd set Friday, eliminating albums by playing 6 covers plus a cover encore — one from each of the 7 albums NOT being played.

So for example, in my dream it might look something like this:

  1. Detroit Rock City (Kiss)
  2. Communication Breakdown (Zeppelin)
  3. Poem 58 (Chicago)
  4. Counting Out Time (Genesis)
  5. Every Little Thing She Does (Police)
  6. Rip this Joint (Stones)
  7. Encore: Paradise City (GNR)

Stream a compilation of this fake set

Notably, I mixed and matched what I'd want them to play with what I think they'd play, which I think makes a huge difference, and is probably how a real dream would unfold.

Also note that I believe it's highly unlikely that they'll eliminate the final albums this way*, but given this concept, what would they play in your dream? Post a comment below once you've given it some thought.

* My insane hypothesis here, in case you were wondering, is that they will have a real life version of the haunted gallery. This will be designed by the guy who did the installations at Hampton and Bonnaroo. Throughout the first two days of the fest actors will come in and kill these larger than life covers with real chainsaws, hatchets, spurting blood, etc. The final 3 or so will be killed on stage in a theatrical experience immediately preceding the costume set Saturday.

Update: The Dead are Dead (October 14th @ 8:50 pm)

Crying Dancing Bear

Oh man, you step away for a few hours and they go and kill off the good ol' Grateful Dead. I didn't think for a second they were going to play this, but I wouldn't have complained. For those who were hoping for this one, the only solace I have to offer is this: Terrapin from Virginia Beach '98. Enjoy.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Bands with 4 Members (October 15th @ 12:40 am)

Here's an interesting observation from Greg below: all the bands phish has covered have been 4 members (at one point or another). If that trend continues, here's who you might hear:

  • Black Sabbath
  • Blind Faith
  • Boston (technically)
  • Genesis (v1.0)
  • Kiss
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Metalica
  • Modern Lovers
  • Pink Floyd
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Television
  • The Clash
  • The Doors
  • The Pixies
  • U2
  • Van Halen
  • Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Greg goes on to jokingly note, “That's 16 bands left. 2 weeks left. 16 divided by 2 is 8!!!!!” Fascinating. Just added the Clash and there are now 17 bands in the list rendering Greg's joke humorless.

Update: Handicapping the Albums (October 16th @ 9:40 am)

I don't think anyone's actually keeping books, but Eric Wyman and Matt Dubno have been handicapping the remaining albums. Here are a few of their picks:

  • Sticky Fingers | Matt @ 20:1, Eric @ 3:2
  • Exile on Main Street | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 12:1
  • Moving Pictures | Matt @ 25:1, Eric @ 25:1
  • Hot Rats | Matt @ 12:1, Eric @ 75:1
  • Electric Ladyland | Matt @ 8:1, Eric @ 3:1

See more handicapping action at 99 Halloweens.

Update: The Campground Albums (October 16th @ 11:50 am)

So this latest rumor has been circulating a bit but the din finally got loud enough that I've decided to post it. People are now saying that there will be 8 campgrounds at Festival 8, one for each of the finalist albums. Here's the rumored list…

  1. David Bowie | Hunky Dory
  2. Genesis | The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway | SBD
  3. Jimi Hendrix | Electric Ladyland
  4. King Crimson | Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. MGMT | Oracular Spectacular
  6. Prince | Purple Rain
  7. Radiohead | Kid A
  8. Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street

I'd take it for what it is, a rumor, but that list pretty well thought out. As I'm sure is the case for most folks, there's a few of my favorites (Stones, Jimi, Genesis), a few I'm not so big on (Radiohead, MGMT), a few I could go either way on (Bowie, Prince), and one I've yet to hear (King Crimson).

Crowd favorite Ziggy Stardust is noticeably absent, leading some to speculate that they'll play a non-campground album. But I'm not so sure as that would mean they'd be playing an album that was previously eliminated, a concept that didn't go over so well with California on the teaser map.

Finally, I saw a great suggestion on another board — the band could go around the campsites late-night and serenade each with a performance of a few tunes from their respective albums. That's probably about the only thing that would make me question my hotel decision, but time will tell.

Update: Much on the Horizon at 8 (October 16th @ 4:40 pm)

Update: The Killer Album Theory (October 16th @ 6:20 pm)

Okay. Here's a theory (not mine) that's either totally obvious or totally out-there, or perhaps a little bit of both.

Let it Bleed Album Cover

The obvious part of the theory (or at least already been discussed here and there) is that the Halloween album is not actually on the list.

The out-there part is that the 100th album is actually the murderer — the one doing all the killing — and that album would be, pun intended, Let it Bleed… the Stones 8th album.

Look forward to your comments on this one.

Hat tip to Cassidy B. for the theory.

Update: Ryan Kerrigan's 8 Balls, David Welker Scratchboard (October 17th @ 5:49 pm)

Ryan Kerrigan Festival 8 Ball

Just added some great stuff to the Festival 8 poster gallery including a set of hand-painted 8 balls by Ryan Kerrigan and an incredible scratchboard piece by David Welker (who also did the Rift cover).

If this is any indication of the type of stuff people will be slinging at the Festival, I might just need an extra suitcase.

Nice work gents.

Update: Pictures at an Exhibition (October 18th @ 11:16 am)

A few followup thoughts to the 100th album theory have emerged in the comment thread below, including one comment from ben who suggests Alice Cooper's 1971 album Killer as the 100th album, noting also that Alice is playing in town on the 30th.

ELP Pictures at an Exhibition

Second, and perhaps more intriguing, is this comment from stealingtime about ELP's 1971 album Pictures at an Exhibition

I doubt they'd play this, as the album has hardly any guitar (listen here) but man does that album cover bear striking resemblance to the Phish gallery or what?

Update: Vendor Map of Festival Grounds (October 19th @ 5:30 pm)

Update removed. Sorry.

Update: Upper Playground / Sonic Living “Day 1” (October 19th @ 10:15 pm)

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8
Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Upper Playground / Sonic Living Festival 8

Came across this link on PhishPosters.com tonight. I'm not familiar with either Upper Playground or Sonic Living, both of whom have logos on these, but someone on PhishPosters is guessing that these are Festival 8 laminate designs.

These aren't quite as cool as past laminates if that's the case, though there's plenty of cool stuff in the UP news feed like this brilliant photo gallery of an urban narcolepsy epidemic.

Update: 10:38 pm Interesting. There's a poster gallery on the Sonic Living site that includes these images, sans text. The guitar gun is by Jeremy Fish, the cityscape by Marco Zamora, and the bike by Sam Flores.

Despite the update, I'm still not sure what the examples above are supposed to be . Post a comment if you have any ideas.

Update: Seeking photos from Phish fans (October 21st  @ 1:18 pm)

Local Indio paper The Desert Sun is looking for great photos from past Phish festivals. See here for details and an email address to send pics.

Update: Festival 8 to be Filmed in 3D (October 21st  @ 2:04 pm)

3D glasses

I heard this rumor from a pretty reliable source last week, but this recent PT post seems to confirm it: Festival 8 will be filmed in 3D! Pretty sure that doesn't mean a simulcast, but it could mean a sweet ass IMAX film down the road along the lines of U2 3D or my other favorite band, the Jonas Brothers.

Update: Burble & Borealis (October 22nd @ 5:22 pm)

Here are two of the amazing interactive sculptures that might be melting your face at Festival 8…

Burble

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A spectacular, futuristic sculpture of helium-filled balloons packed with LEDs and infrared sensors that floats above spectators in response to infra-red signals and its immediate environment.

Borealis

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

A mirage-like installation that glows with colours and ebullient patterns created in response to the competing and collaborative voices, music and screams of people nearby.

Update: Behold the Plasma Cutter (October 23rd @ 5:00 pm)

Here's some more neat stuff the likes of which you just might see at Festival 8. It's two amazing metal sculptures from the portfolio of San Francisco based Dan Das Mann. As you can see, he's not only a genius with the plasma cutter, but also knows a thing or two about melting faces.

Update: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings @ F8? (October 24th @ 10:30 pm)

Here's a rumor that, if true, has been of the better kept secrets of this whole affair.

As posted in this comment, word is Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will join Phish for the musical costume at Festival 8.

The video at right should give you a good idea of Ms. Jones's superb vocals and the Dap-Kings funk / soul musical stylings.

No complaints from this guy if this is legit, which I believe it be. Especially if it means an Exile on Main Street (or Let it Bleed) costume.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Colossal Testaments in Steel and Stone (October 25th @ 3:00 pm)

Here's a trio of large-scale sculptures from Rosanna Scimeca, another artist you might be seeing at 8. According to her site, Rosanna likes to “explore how the observer may interface, interact, and identify with her installations.” Yeah, I can give her a preview: they're going bug out.

Update: Pollock Halloween Mask + HeadCount Trivia Contest (October 26th @ 1:45 pm)

Today Jambands.com posted information about a Pollock Halloween mask to be available at the WaterWheel table gallery throughout Festival 8. Plus, HeadCount will be running a trivia contest and the grand prize winner will get an uncut sheet of masks with a  one-of-kind Pollock doodle.

Sample trivia question: “What town does Trey Anastasio, John Popper of Blues Traveler and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors all hale from?”

Pollock Festival 8 Teaser

There's also the recently surfaced image at right, which I believe to be a teaser for a Pollock Festival 8 poster, though I'm not 100% on that.

Poster or not, can't wait to see the mask! In the mean time, here's a growing Festival 8 poster gallery.

Update: Stage Photo & Viewing Platform Sketch (October 26th @ 6:45 pm)

Today Twitter user @BathtubGym posted what I believe to be the first pic of the stage setup, as well as a sketch of the viewing platform for the Dan Das Mann installation.

I'm sure I'll say this ten times over the next 2 days, but I can't believe I just got MORE excited.

Update: Festival 8 to be Simulcast Live on Sirus (October 26th @ 9:54 pm)

This just in: all 8 sets of Festival 8 including the musical costume and acoustic set will be simulcast live on JamOn, channel 17 on SIRIUS!!!

Not a subscriber? Good news… you can sign up for a free trial and hear the simulcast without spending a dime. Huge thanks to whoever is responsible for arranging this. Jam On!

Update: They Have Created Fire (October 27th @ 1:56 am)

If you're anything like me, you're somehow riveted by fire — and you'll definitely be making it a point to see this six-pack fire artists rumored to be appearing at Festival 8:

Update: Glitches, XML fun, & Gordon's Hotline (October 28th @ 1:18 pm)

The Wall

Looks like there was some sort of glitch in the album teaser on Phish.com for a bit when Apostrophe was killed — as the gallery was only showing living albums, and the Wall and Exile had gone missing. All seems back to normal now, though the Wall is indeed dead as seen at right.

Also appears that someone's having some fun with the xml file — with Michael Jackson changing to “Michael Jackson Is Alive“ and Yes changing to “Yes Yes Yes Yes.“ — but I'm not reading into either of those too much.

Speaking of having fun, Gordon's hotline (212-330-9092) has had two recent updates, the latest playing off the 100th album theories that are floating around.

And last but not least, I just checked into my flight for tomorrow. If anyone's on Southwest from Chicago at 12:35, hit me up for a free drink coupon. I'll be the dork carrying the poster tube.

Update: Jamtopia Meetup | Friday. Setbreak. Picnic Area. (October 28th @ 4:18 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

Okay, let's make this thing official.

After extensive reviews of the map and comments, I believe the best time and place to meet is setbreak on Friday at the picnic area. It's at the back of the concert field Page side.

That way if people want to hit the Honey Bucket or grab food or drinks or whatever it's all convenient.

Update: Get a FREE scoop of Ben & Jerry's (October 28th @ 5:24 pm)

Jamtopia Meetup

I just got an email from Ben & Jerry's with some great news.

In addition to being huge fans of Jamtopia, Vermont's finest ice cream purveyors will be offering free scoops of Phish Food at Festival 8.

All you have to do is “particip8” in a social action with one of the charities at the WaterWheel booth (e.g. sign a petition, make a donation) to get your free delights.

Sweet.

Update: More Stage Photos (October 28th @ 6:25 pm)

Got some more stage pics, this time from Twitter user @briankarol:

I'm thinking they need more speakers!

Update: Festival 8 Wristband (October 29th @ 12:11 am)

Festival 8 wristband

I'm not sure if this is a staff wristband or just the standard issue, but either way it looks pretty sweet sauce. If the production values of this wristband are any indication this is really going to be one hell of a shindig.

Meanwhile, as I write this, Van Morrison and Zeppelin were killed off. Only 9 remain. Can't get there soon enough.

Update: Festival 8 Shout-out on Conan (October 29th @ 8:08 am)

Well this is surreal. Masterfully bearded Phish fan Rob Howard was in the Late Night crowd yesterday and got interviewed by Conan to “promote Phish.”

As you'll see when you watch the video, Conan had a little something extra planned to help get the word out about Festival 8.

Props to Rob for representing Phish — and the great state of Illinois :)

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

Update: Finally on My Way (October 29th @ 10:00 am)

Well I'm just about to take off for the airport. This has been an amazing 30+ days tracking the album teaser and I'm almost sad to see it end. Thank you all for your awesome participation: coming up with crazy numerology, alerting me to updates, and just waxing philosophical in the comments.

As soon as I land I'll start up a new post with updates and recaps from the Festival. Hope to keep the great comments going there, so I'll be having a giveaway — a little something that's sure to light up any room. I think you'll like it.

Update 7pm: New Festival 8 Recap post is live.

Update: Phish to Play Exile on Main Street (October 31th @ 3:00 pm)

The Phishbill is out and it's been confirmed, Phish will be dressing up as the Rolling Stones and covering Exile on Main Street tonight.

More coverage on the way at the Festival 8 Recap post. Hope to see you there.

2033 Comments so far

I keep hearing different #;s as far as how many tickets have been sold, does anybody have reliable information on this. Sounds like not that many folks from the east are making the treck especially now with Fall tour on the horizon.

Van Halen is “Runnin’ with the devil.”

@WillEd11 Re: any chance you know where they are setting up the sales for these?

Lately Phish has been updating their Twitter feed (@Phish) with poster info prior to the onsale.

Speaking of Twitter, I’m working on a small upgrade to PhishTwit that will make the tweet feed a bit more reliable. If you’re not familiar, it’s a Phish Twitter aggregator with chat, streams, pics, and more.

TL

P.S. Here’s a little pro-tip… you can click the little speech bubble icon next to the headline where it says “1000 comments” and jump right down to the comment form. Extra helpful now that the comments are in reverse chrono.

@PiNT - this is how I understand it:  prior to the map, there was a leak that there would be 8 campgrounds, each named after one of the 8 surviving albums.  MGMT was on that list.  Then the map came out and MGMT is the only one not listed, so maybe it is an assumption.

Anyone feel free to correct me if that’s wrong.

So, what about this?  8 sets…8 albums…they cover a different album for each set?  Seems totally outrageous and completely unlikely :)

Van Halen gets the first axe of the day!

Jamie’s Cryin’ - no more Van Halen!

Pink Floyd The Wall

I’m sure that the posters are going to be tough to come by.

Todd, you said something about putting a jamtopia sticker on your “poster tube”... any chance you know where they are setting up the sales for these? I got hosed at Red Rocks for trying to get one inside the venue on Thursday… when in fact they were sold behind the Trading Post south of the venue (not even inside).

Does anyone know where they will sell them?

LITERALLY CAN’T WAIT. GET ME OUT OF TEXAS!

@benka

I figure the acoustic set will be a mix of both.  If you look at the Bridge School gigs back in 98 (playing them right now actually), they did some a cappella jams, and (then new) songs like driver, as well as classics such as Hood and Guyute.

Totally saw the Borealis at GLOW last year in Santa Monica.  That was the most amazing thing I’ve seen!  Projecting light on water that reacted to the crowd and music…. Just nuts!  There were so many things around the pier that night Santa Monica was just an utter mad house!  Took over an hour to just make it to the pier.  Also saw the premier of an orchestral piece played from the Ferris Wheel.  That kind of sucked, but it was a neat idea!

I got it!!! The 100th album will be SLAYER!!! it mayes sense… they’re laying waste to all the other albums… Phish will make thier debut as a death metal jam band with a cover of Reign in Blood! Happy Helloween and Hail Satan!

Can someone explain to me in a concise, factual manner why everyone is including MGMT in the ‘final 8’ based on the leaked festival grounds blueprint (BattlePlan.pdf)?  How did we make the leap to include the MGMT LP along with the other 7 listed?

I am scouring the site map, and do not find evidence of MGMT anywhere.

Am I missing something?

(Glad to see ‘Lamb’ will at least make the final 8, but sorry to see no London Calling… I was pulling for you Gregg!)

What is it with MGMT? They are not even in the league with most of the other legacy bands.  If I look at history of what has been covered, MGMT doesn not fit the list.

So I understand theres this map of the festie showing 8 (7?) album themed campsites which has disappeared due to DMCA notices.

But please tell me people, what are the final 8 campsites/albums?!?! It’s killing me.

(...or would answering that question result in another DMCA notice?)

Like many folks, I’m sure, I’ve been listening to some of the albums that are still in contention, some of them for the first time.  This though occurred to me as I listened to Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.  It’s possible that this is totally off base (and I’m sure that some friendly phan will let me know in short order), but I swear the background music Phish has on the Festival 8 website sure sounds a hell-of-a-lot like Phish playing the Ravine track on Lamb Lies Down.

Wouldn’t it be just like the boys to have the biggest clue right in front of our noses the whole time?  Thoughts?  Self-righteous indignation?

@Jeff from LA:

You know what you make a very valid point.  This would be like Phish to orchestrate a “Leak”. But also it’s this close to the fest and 8 finalists is a pretty big number.  If we’re to believe the roulette wheel of death 30 is also pretty big number.

And yeah I messed up on the Clapton thing. I forgot boulevard was up there and I used to think Blind Faith was one of the formal Beatles projects until about 1 hour ago. And I agree, Santana should be on the list of greatest ever guitarists.

As for those saying MGMT wasn’t on the map, it might have been. Look at #16 on the map, there’s a blurry name down there. It’s 2 long words and heavily resemble the words “Oracular Spectacular”.

And wtf.. they haven’t killed anything off today.  Maybe their random number of killings per day translates into a word of some sort.  Or maybe the track lengths of the winner.

Yeah Gregg - That’s it. Boy, you sure got me..lol!

So i suggest we all pitch in and buy a keg of FOAM and make Todd drink it on Halloween.  After all, he has kicked all kinds of ass on this project, and what better way to repay him then kill his liver and making him piss himself when the band covers The Killers debut record.  Gordo is gonna tear it up on Jenny Was A Friend of Mine (or whatever that jam is called).

oh and this is comic gold:

@Rog re: May we ask who sent the DMCA takedown notice?

Yes, you may ask, but I’ve got nothing further to say about it.

Upper Playground is a store in SF that designs great hoodies, hats, and the like.

Anybody have thoughts on the acoustic set?

U think standard songs?.....inlaw josie, driver, waste?

I think a full orchestra set would be cool.

I’m betting the map was real as crews have been setting everything up for a couple weeks now, so it stands to reason the map could easily have been leaked.  But because of that, I don’t really believe the album will be one of the “Campground albums”.  It seems Phish is taking great pains to keep it a secret, so the less people that know, the better. (I would bet, as of now, only a small handful of the inner circle knows what album they will cover).  If this is the case, there is no way they would have that info anywhere that it could be seen by any random person setting up the fest.  It would be too risky to have one of the campgrounds be the album they play.

Not to mention, one major difference between Phish fests and other fests is that Phish doesn’t do the VIP thing.  Everyone is equal at a Phish fest.  If they make a campground the album they end up covering, it could easily make some people think they were in “the best” campground and could promote an elitist attitude.  After all, they were in the campground Phish choice as the cover, all the others were rejected, therefore “my campground is more special than your campground”. I know that sounds like a bit of a stretch, but I’ve seen a lot of childish things at shows :-)

And for those who think they won’t tell us or give us clues about the album, in the past when you walk into the show they give you a Playbill that tells you what album they are playing along with the history of the album, track listing, and comments from the band.  And I remember for the Loaded set , they sent out their Doniac Schvice newsletter before Halloween, and had a couple pictures of a banana a la the cover to Velvet Underground and Nico. Anyone else remember this?

Also, for the poster who was talking about no Eric Clapton - not only do they have a Blind Faith album, but they have the Clapton album “461 Ocean Blvd” as one of the choices as well.

In my opinion, the only egregious omission of an influential classic album artist they left off the gallery, (other than Stevie Wonder and Bob Marley), is Santana.  I was surprised Abraxas wasn’t on there.

OK, never mind - if this is the list:

1. Jimi Hendrix | Electric Ladyland
2. King Crimson | Larks’ Tongues In Aspic
3. Prince | Purple Rain
4. Radiohead | Kid A
5. David Bowie | Hunky Dory
6. Genesis | The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway | SBD
7. MGMT | Oracular Spectacular
8. Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street

If that’s really the list (which is crazy to me, because it has stuff they’ll never do (Kid A)), then it’s the Stones. I am surprised because of Loving Cup, but if they do it up with horns, it’ll be a whole new Loving Cup for Phish.

I would most like MGMT off that list. Exile will be a blast.

all of these albums being killed are “JUST ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL”

hey allister!!! that was gay… i was simply informing someone who wrote a small essay on why “he thinks the 100th album is eric clapton” that clapton already got the axe. do me a fav and look back to see how many comments i have made this entire time….... two!!!!! now because of ur tree huggin hippy ass. i have enjoyed following the list on this website because its a pain in the ass to track all the albums on phish’s site. but as far as you “bloggers” go. why dont you guys get a life. who gives a crap about maps leaked or rumors of horns. just go to the show and rage. and dont forget to put on your space cadet glows ” quote from my first pick!!!!!

Ah…thanks for the clarification…yes 44 one minute songs would be like a never ending commercial break.  I think we all agree that one 44 minute song is right up their alley.

Someone asked if they were allowed back to their campsite mid set or at set break, and I’m 99% positve you have access everywhere before, during, and after the shows…thats how they rolled at NY2K and Coventry.  Apparently you get a wrist band upon entering the polo grounds, and you wear that all weekend.  Moral of the story, yes, you can re-up at setbreak in your car or in your tent, or shanty, whathaveyou…

Can’t wait…lol at my lack of production at work bc of this site.  7 days!!

@GMahal
Hit the nail a little to squarely on the head, did I? ;)

Can someone post the “Final 8” from the map? I remember thinking no way it was real because of the albums listed, but it’s starting to sound like it is.

@christ the ruler from killumbus :

Ahh the joys of the internet and message boards. Instead of informing someone of their mistake and educating them, we instead insult them and call them out for internet fights.

@todd:
Yeah I think we all looked at the maps, but we all know how easily a phaniac who’s an engineer could have easily faked them.

@Jen re: Jamtopia sticker

I’d like to have one of these on my poster tube as well but just don’t have time to get anything (of sufficient quality) made in time for F8.

Love the thought though.

@all re: the map is real

Did you guys look at that map? I didn’t think its legitimacy was in question.

@Allister re: I say we only discuss the leaked final 8 from now on.

Or it could be one of the other 23 (minus the 7 on the map) or the 100th album theory… the thinking being that they wouldn’t make it so obvious.

@Rog re: May we ask who sent the DMCA takedown notice?

Yes, you may ask, but I’ve got nothing further to say about it.

@zzyzx re: It’s still out there

Totally reminds me of this great quote from John Barlow.

When the Grateful Dead first tried to pull their music from Archive.org and the web in general Barlow said, “They might as easily put a teaspoon of food coloring in a swimming pool and then tell the pool owner to get it back to them. ” (source)

Obviously a different situation because the map wasn’t originally intended to be shared like the Dead’s music but it’s a brilliant analogy just the same.

TL

The “Alpha & Omega” on the map is for the mounted security.  Alpha & Omega mounted security has done security for most, if not all, of the Phish festivals and Bonnaroo, among others.

So I guess the final 8 are confirmed!

@Todd - since the fest is promoting re-use of water bottles, how about a Jamtopia sticker to fill the empty space on my Nalgene?!

Also,
MGMT was not on the map or anything else, no reason to include.
They will be gone today.

Gregg - Relax bro..really…

@Todd"I received a DMCA takedown notice.”

That makes me think it was real.
Which makes me think we will be left with those 7 albums.
The 8th could be the last to die on Wed. or Thurs. next week.
Then we would all have a campground album to root for.
If I had to pick one of those 7 I must change my call to Purple Rain.
I would love King Crimson but its gonna be a party, so Prince or Jimi from that list.
As far as royalty’s and legality’s I dont think money is an issue for Phish. And Prince is used to getting paid for people preforming his tunes, some of his biggest hits were performed by others(i.e. Nothing Compares to You, Sinead O’Conner)
And he is a really cool guy, dont think he’ll complain about getting a cut$$$ of the show and DVD profits.

P.S. Thanks to all sticking up for Boston, I was starting to feel alone, its glorious arena rock at its very best. Could be a bringing to east coast to the west nod.

I hope the maps fake, really bummed Elton and Television aren’t on there

whoever said that eric clapton was not the list you would be wrong. eric clapton and steve winwood were both in blind faith. know your shit before you post

@Todd - May we ask who sent the DMCA takedown notice? ;) Because that could be kind of telling.

hey tl?
who sent it to you?

@Drew re: Why was the vendor map update removed?

I received a DMCA takedown notice.

I received a DMCA takedown notice.

Well that’s one way of making sure that we all know it was legit.  Sometimes using that can backfire.  It’s still out there but no one can think it’s a hoax anymore.

Download the map here: REDACTED

6 days!!!! w00t!!!

Editor’s Note: Please don’t post links to the map.

Do they realize by giving you that order that they are, in fact, giving credit to it?

Because of this I say we only discuss the leaked final 8 from now on.  They are the only ones with any creditability left.

Here’s my personal list of the final 8 and which I’d like to hear most:
1. Jimi Hendrix | Electric Ladyland
2. King Crimson | Larks’ Tongues In Aspic
3. Prince | Purple Rain
4. Radiohead | Kid A
5. David Bowie | Hunky Dory
6. Genesis | The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway | SBD
7. MGMT | Oracular Spectacular
8. Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street

If there is a 100th record I’m gonna say it has to do something with Clapton.  He’s the only master guitarist, besides BB King, who wasn’t included on this list in one of their bands.

The Elektra theory comment is the stoopidist thing I have ever read.

Contracts are signed.  This thing is going down.  Can’t share the details but, it is on!

@Drew re: Why was the vendor map update removed?

I received a DMCA takedown notice.

in all the new pictures of them they’re all wearing black….    Back in Black??

ac/dc a strong possibility….    but im hoping for Elecrtic Ladyland or Ziggy

@GMahal
Sir, you are on crack.

Just because you listened to Buffalo Soldier on your copy of Legend too many times does not make Bob Marley an overexposed 80s performer. Bob created timeless beautiful music that I think Phish wouldn’t tackle, frankly, because they felt they couldn’t do it justice.

I am very familiar with that Miles record and many other Miles records. I listened to Jack Johnson just the other day thanks to the grooveshark links people have posted here. I honestly can’t believe you think Phish would have or could have played it. Why don’t you go see a good jazz band?

it’s a free form Jazz record - Phish is a rock band. Their instruments, their skill set, nothing lends itself to playing that kind of music. I’m just not sure what you think that experience would be like.

And if you think the crowd at festival eight would have been more excited to hear abstract trumpet jams on MIDI over a record like Kaya, then you’re on the extra strong crack.

It’s fine to like Miles, and I do quite a bit. That doesn’t mean it’s something Phish should play, and I’m sure they’d tell you the same thing. I’m frankly not sure you’re familiar with that record - or maybe you have Phish confused with a Jazz band you heard somewhere.

I do think you should give Bob another listen - I think you’ll be surprised what you’ve been missing that isn’t on Legend. And I think you’ll agree it would be a much more appropriate set of covers for Phish than uncomposed Jazz horns.

Kinda baffled…

I’m seeing all these comments about a map of the different campsites. Can someone post a link to that or let me know where to find it. Thanks

100th album = michael jackson “off the wall”

As I wrote elsewhere, I don’t get this call.  It has all of the downside of playing MJ without having the singalong dance party that Thriller would be.  What would be the point?

@Todd Why was the vendor map update removed?

Also, thanks for the great site!

100th album = michael jackson “off the wall”

Re: Jamtopia shirts…

I just had one made. Never in a million years did I think someone else would actually want to buy one.

Will try to get it up on Zazzle or whatever after F8 if there’s still interest.

::flattered::

@Allister from ChiTown
I am still scarred by what I found.

@Dog Girl
Bruce Dickinson is just a man, who puts on his pants one leg at a time like everybody else, but after he puts on his pants, he makes gold records.  (I know you’re talking about Maiden - but I already predicted More Cowbell - so I had to say it.)

@all
I am a noob - so I am totally down to meetup with people.  As a ‘rooer I am automatically drawn to the Ferris Wheel.

Minutemen

for sure

If I see you with that jamtopia shirt your definitely getting a beer.  or there any jamtopia tshirts for sale?

I wrote the band and wished for Chicago.  It has great horns, plenty of room for extended jams, and would be an incredible tribute to Terry Kath.  As an added bonus it’s a double album featuring great harmonies and a variety of sounds.  Historically, it’s important as it was the first time a band debuted a double album.  All that being said, who really knows.  I wishing for either that or the Gamehenge as the killer.

Listening to Zappa Apostrope, Phish could so rip that album up. Such a wacky, crazy, funny, musically challenging piece. I don’t think they’ll do it, but it would be an amazing night if they did.Would also love to hear Van Halen I. Just a killer set and Trey could do epic things with EVH’s guitar woek! Anything they decide to do will be be awesome. Have a feeling it’s Purple Rain.

Can we clear some things up?

First the facts:

- We have this map, and after studying it for a while I’m pretty convinced it’s legit.  Kudos to the AutoCAD wizard who drummed this thing up if it’s not.

- It specifies 7 camps, yet there is an 8 camp rumor that has a lot of momentum (and makes a lot of sense).

- There’s an area of the map that is blanked out and labled “Alpha Omega”.  (Look at this on Google Maps, there’s a pool there so it might actually be where the band stays, although I’m more inclined to think they have there own places off site).

- All the 8 camp rumors that have been passed around seem to include the bands on the map plus MGMT, which is not on the map.

So my question is, how do people interpret this?

Here are some of my suggestions:

- The actual album they will play is MGMT and they’re thinking they’ll take a simple, poppy, and in my mind quite likeable, album and shred it and expand on it in a way that blows the original away.

-The whole MGMT thing has been a controlled leak and they’re somehow leaving the final campground/album a mystery.  This is what I hope for the most.  The three most influential bands for me have been Phish, The Dead, and The Stones, but I’m rooting for Electric Ladyland.  I’m tentatively planning my whole Saturday around “1983…(A Merman I Should I Turn To Be)”.

- The 100th album theory.  It’s not even an album on the list.

- This whole campground theory is bunk.  The map is a fake.

I’m curious what people’s thoughts are on this, but I’d also like to add a note about expectations:

My unsolicited advice is to not get too caught up in them.  Phish has done a good job with this whole 99 album thing, but the danger is that it’s worked us all up into such a fever pitch (and the truth is we are a small percentage of those that are going to be at the show) that it would be easy to get caught up in what we are expecting and desiring and be disappointed because it doesn’t immediately fit our wishes.

Let’s all be open minded as if we were noobs who had never experienced Phish, never experienced complex jams, or psychedelia, and let ourselves be blown away, because if we can’t do that we have bigger problems than being let down on Halloween night.  I agree with the poster earlier that said I’d rather hang out with a noob that got it, than a veteran that didn’t. This experience we share has nothing to do with stats.

That being said, I think Phish is trying to break into Southern California and if this turns into a successful event I think they may make this festival a regular thing.  I first saw Phish in ‘91 (I’m not bragging, because I’m still a noob with barely double digits under my belt), but I explore elsewhere for a while because I grew up with classic rock, and jam bands and I needed to wander off the reservation awhile before coming back to Phish (K&D Sessions anyone?).

What I’m saying is, I’m stoked they’re back, I’m stoked they’re sober, I’m stoked they’ve got their families, and I’m ready to see them prove that they can still shred (I saw it in the Gorge).  I’m also psyched to look back at the first fest in Indio and remember how cool it was because it was the first, and a lot of people in SoCal (I lived in L.A. for 11 years, I know the dirty looks that Phans get) hadn’t caught on yet. I’m bring 4 total noobs and I can’t wait to see the looks on their faces when they realize what a Phish concert is REALLY like.

This is going to be huge folks.  Welcome to Halloween in the desert!

Phorever noob!

I’m going to get into the conversing here.  I’ve been thinking about vocals a lot when it comes to the costume.  Some of the albums left on the list are very vocally driven.  Bowie, for example, has such a voice that I’m not sure they would tackle one of his albums.  I know they do Life on Mars? but Page has been known to have a little trouble with that high part and that was years ago.  Still I’d love to hear page play all that beautiful piano on Hunky Dory or the Ziggy album.  That’s not to say they won’t do it.  After all, The Beatles have great voices and they covered that.  The Beatles also have lots of harmonies which pHiSh can hit.  Remain in Light?  The vocals are pretty easily attainable.  I like Byrne’s voice but it’s not beyond them, obviously.  And Loaded.  I fuc#in’ love Lou Reed’s voice..not very easy to mimick and they didn’t try to.  The album worked pretty well for them anyway.  BLAH BLAH, here’s what I came to say:

Exile on Main Street is my pick.

-here’s why-
1.They’ve been playing Loving Cup for years and have covered Sweet Virginia once (anyone know which of the boys sang that one back in ‘99, i think?)
2.The album is long; 18 tracks and there really is a lot of ground covered…slower stuff, funky stuff, spaceyish stuff, rockin’ as a MF’r stuff.
3.The songs on the album are beautiful and gritty and lend themselves to interpretation because to me this album sound like it could be anyone, the stones, some shitty garage band, a soul outfit…all the songs sound like first takes and are loose and not too nailed down technically. Love “Shine a Light”
4.The loose nature of this particular stones album is unique.  The underproduction and rawness would avoid the problem when you think about your favorite albums and then think about phish doing them.  Yes, phish is sick and can ‘do’ anything, but there are always things about the original that seem lost, even with phish. Exile however is not intimidating and could be a real crowd pleaser even to hardcore purist types.
5.The vocals!  Let’s face it, Mick’s voice is really nothing special.  He’s got this great ‘everyman’ voice and though it’s perfect for the music, anyone can sing these songs.  It’s not like trying to nail Prince or Stevie Wonder or Brian Johnson. They can deliver these songs without hesitation.  All the harmonies, horns!...Feel it! They’re gonna hit that sh!t.  I can’t wait.
L8

Since we are down to thirty or so now, I’ll make three predictions.

Pink Floyd - The Wall
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Michael Jackson - Thriller

Pink Floyd - The Wall Well, its just my personal pick of that list. Perfect for all members of the band (imo), all will be able to take a turn on the vocals. If they only play one of the two disks, my pick is disc 2.

Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland This has been my dark horse pick since the beginning. The first two tracks alone would be mind blowing. I dont really see them doing this album.

Michael Jackson - Thriller I think is just so people will think, “Its Halloween, just too perfect”

I dont think we’ll know exactly whats going to be played on the 31st, but they will narrow it down from anywhere to 2-5 albums left and we’ll have to wait and see. But you never know, they have tricked us before. I really like the murderer theory. There may be that one album killing off all the others.

Others I’d love to see

King Crimson
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Elton John - Goodbye Yellowbrick Road
Frank Zappa - Apostrophe

I declare Friday night Iron Maiden shirt night at Festival 8

@Gregg - Just really funny to me that you really poo-poo’d the thought of them covering Miles Davis’ A Tribute to Jack Johnson and then suggested Bob Marley!

I thought you were overly harsh on the Miles idea, and I’m guessing that you’re not at all familiar with that album. I suggest you do yourself a favor and become familiar with it.

For the record, I never said I thought they would do it, I said that I would like to see them do it..and I stand by that.

Bob Marley just reminds me of 1985, when I was in High School. I’ve heard enough to last me a life time. Talk about over exposed!

@ Hoosiermama

“Why in the world would they tell us the album?  They wouldn’t.  They never have before. “

Actually they used to let people vote on the album through the newsletter, though they never revealed whether they actually took to vote into consideration.

Also, Boston has the appropriate amount of background vocals and the tight song structures are more indicative of phish v. 3.0.

I’m calling it. The halloween costume will be Boston. It strikes the best balance between musical challenge, vocal achievability, crowd pleasingness, dancability, and has clearly influenced the band. Not to mention it rocks. Boston FTW.

@all re: meetup

First off, let me tell you how amazing it is to me that such a thing would even be proposed.

What would be the best time / place to do such a thing?

There’s the stereotypical soundboard at setbreak. Or perhaps the Pollock booth pre-show?

Open to ideas.

@Reverend Justito Re: Dumb question for someone who has not gone to a Phish fest. Can you go back to your tent/campground between sets, or is it once on the “concert field” your there all day? Also, I assume all the bonus stuff like NFL/Live Phish tent is in the “concert field”?

You’re pretty much free to roam and most of the extras are usually near or in the concert field.

Depending on where you camp you will be roaming for more or less time and you can expect to see many confused people trying to find their spot after the show. See the anecdote in the first definition here for details.

Clifford Ball was different if I recall, where you had a separate camping ticket then another ticket for each show. (Kickass Pollock stubs, btw) Not sure how the orchestra set was handled.

TL

P.S. 100% in on Maiden shirt.

@Reverend Justino: yes, you are free to roam in and out of the concert grounds. At least you were allowed to do that at every other festival:)

Does anyone know if we are allowed to watch soundcheck on thurs? I hope so!!!!

So where are all of us Jamtopia message board friends going to meet up at the festival? How about at the Ferris Wheel, or Bloody Mary bar? Or something like that.  Who’s down to meet up?

It’s going to be The Lamb because Genesis was the first band which I really went nuts for, and I can’t make it to Festival 8.

‘Nuff said.

HoosierMama, Hell yes, nail on the head!!!!  I have been to many shows and many festivals and one lesson learned is never expect anything but a kickass time.  Guess all you want but its gonna be on any given night is a long shot (rarities I mean) a damn long shot. The first Phish festival since Coventry and Halloween show in 11 years they are gonna F*^K our faces!!! Houses of the Holy or an album that inspired them.  No matter what it will kick ass, always does, always will!

Notice how they kill off Neil pre bridge school?  Love Neil, but that album is good, but not a favorite of mine.

I would love to meet you all, share some meds or a beer or even just some halloween candy.

I may need to bring my Maiden shirt if we do meet.  I am telling you, after my first phish show (shoreline 97 weeks after I turned 18) all my heavy metal pals “got” phish and went to at least a show with me between 97 and 00.  It’s ok to like metal and phish.  Kid Rock said it best.  I’m jamming with Phish, cause I like fuckin’ music.

Dumb question for someone who has not gone to a Phish fest.  Can you go back to your tent/campground between sets, or is it once on the “concert field” your there all day?  Also, I assume all the bonus stuff like NFL/Live Phish tent is in the “concert field”?

@eric from Chicago
I really doubt it could be Double Nickels, but each side is the songs chosen by one of the 3 members of the band.  The 4th side is just songs no one chose, and they call it the chaff side.  I rarely bother with anything on this side, and think covering the first 3 would be just fine.

If they did play it, I would love to see the mayhem when the intro to Corona plays.  The real challenge would be doing Short Music for Short People from Fat Wreck Chords - 101 30 second or less songs.

If I see Bruce Dickinson come out on stage with Phish I would be the happiest woman ever!  I realize that is a pipe dream.  Neal Diamond on the other hand…....no one would expect!  Whatever they play will be appreciated by this old phan.  Hope to see some long lost friends and enjoy yet another Phish festival!  See you there

This is horrible, but I am posting it anyway.  What if the 100th album is a Stevie Wonder album, and since he is blind, he has no idea which album he is hitting?  As afar as the album, no clue!
Again, it it just a thought, and not meant to insult the blind.

I also agree that I love this site and am on it way too much, and it is completely building my excitement for 8.  I have pretty much been listening (or re-listening) to every album in the gallery as well as all the “maybe, possibly 100th album theories” imagining Phish playing it and how it would sound with them ripping it up.

That said, one album I feel has totally flown under the radar but would be so fun to hear is Boston.  I don’t actually think they will play it, (not enough musical variety) but if they did it would be one of the only albums that the entire audience would pretty much know every single song (as long as they have listened to a classic rock station in the past 20 years). It is a straight ahead rock and roll album with a ton of potential for jamming and whether you like all the songs or not, it would at least keep you on your feet dancing the whole set.

If you haven’t heard it yet, take a listen and I think you’ll see what I mean. It may not be my #1 choice, but I can’t deny that it would sure be fun.

@hoosiermama:

@ StevO

You must have missed NY2K in Big Cypress.  If anyone can play a song for 44+ minutes, its these guys…

No.  The album has almost 50 songs that average a minute and a half each.  That could be problematic for a band like phish.

@Stev0
No, not 44 minute songs
44 - one minute songs.

Yes, mikeb….Jamtopia Blog Hoe-Down it is!!

Well, tonight’s not the night…

The 8 leaked finalists are looking pretty good right now.  Shame, some bozo engineer blew the bands cover.

See ya later, Neil.

The albums are being killed, but by Wilson.

Halloween Set = Full Gamehenge.

acoustic set features all cover songs in a coffee shop, intimate style.

mmmmmmmm…..

(if not, I hope for the wall (and forbins mockingbird)).

Why in the world would they tell us the album?  They wouldn’t.  They never have before.  Wake up people…they are fucking with you.  They win.  You have now listened to lots of albums—many you have never heard of before.  Expect the unexpected.  That is one thing I have definitely learned over the years following Phish.  There are always millions of rumors…usually none of them pan out.  That’s what make reading these boards so much fun. The anticipation, the theories, the speculation, the ludicrous amount of time we all waste compiling ideas and statistics on everything (number of songs on an album, years they were released, how many members are alive).  We have all been schooled—-literally and figuratively by PHiSH.  And yes, they could urinate in our ears…and we would love it.  This is just another chess game they are playing with us.  They will win.  They always do….

If it is getting filmed it won’t be purple rain. i thought prince was a jerk about all that business? did the 20th aniversary video montage become unavailable for release because it had a snippet of 1999. he gets pissed when people show his picture on myspace. i’m shocked that he’s even in the gallery. that almost makes me think… it’s totally going to be purple rain…..never mind, and maybe o(-> will even come out and play and phishs costume will be the revolution!

and as far as the map goes i bet the unmarked lots were going to be used in the event of a sellout.

i’m pretty sure i’ll be dancing next to the borealas all weekend.

They finished the summer tour with “Highway to Hell”

Meaning - they are on a highway to….hell(indio)

Halloween theme…...its in the AC/DC bag baby.

Love that theory If Killers by Maiden is the missing album. My favorite band in the 80’s! look at Eddie on that album cover with the axe… but I don’t think they will do metal and there are no horns in that album. also Maiden is active band. I dare you to Play Maiden if you can!!!

Whoaaaaa that “Borealis” video on the updates is nutssss, if it’s entertaining me this much on my couch, i can only imagine it at 8.

“How the hell are they gonna play 44 minute and a half songs.”

@ Eric from Chicago…

You must have missed NY2K in Big Cypress.  If anyone can play a song for 44+ minutes, its these guys…

I swear, in my mindaltered state, I did not see a single member of the band leave the stage once from 11:30pm on 12/31/99 until about 7:15am on 1/1/00…

Phish isn’t on Elektra records anymore.. JEMP, Rubber Jungle, and i think there’s some ties to Rhino..( i think there were Rumors of Rhino getting the FZ catalog, so Phish was trying to co-ordinate something for Peaches and other Zappa stuff. plus Rhino wanted to shoot Video)

P.S. Me thinks THIS is the Halloween video that gets released.. just makes sense.. MSG NYE ‘95, clifford ball, IT, live in Brooklyn, Vegas,... Halloween is a huge part of Phishtory so,.. it makes sense to document it.. at least once anyway.. why not in 3D in this day n age where everyone has PDA’s and cell Phones and PSP’s, iPod’s and….
what?? did u expect them to release Festival8 the “book”???? :p

Just to add my 2 cents, I realized an analogy is in order (based on realizations brought about by my wife’s obsession with Food Network (yes, the TV channel)):

In watching great chefs, I realized that I could not be one.  I am just too picky with my food.  How could I make great escargo, when I can’t stand the thought of snails?  And forget about liver!  But a great chef can (almost by definition) appreciate and enjoy all types of food, allowing him/her to work with them.  In addition, in the hands of a great chef, liver can taste good (certainly a lot better than my mom’s! - Sorry Mom!)

Similarly (here’s the analogy ;-)), Phish are great musicians, they are trained and can appreciate a very wide variety of music.  Unfortunately, I am still kind of picky with my music.  And some of us are more picky than others.  Thankfully, Phish has broadened my musical tastes, and frankly, whatever they serve us at Halloween, I will happily consume.  (Walking out would be more of a reflection on me than on them).  That is not to say that all choices for the Album are equal.  Phish, of all bands, could cover Thriller so that it would sound great!  But would it sound as good as Ziggy Stardust, which is perhaps more of their specialty, and give them more room to express themselves.  I am all for hearing new music by Phish, and having my musical tastes broadened further in their presence.  I think all of us just want to have this year’s costume to be on par with previous year’s.

Some other thoughts… I think Phish will consider that there is a broad audience at the festival, and will play something with broad appeal, therefore a record that has been well established.  Also, I believe the rumor that they are probably learning multiple albums, and have already changed their minds.  The implication is that all of these “clues” (the numerology, the location of the venue, etc.) are probably just coincidences….

My pick: and the Lamb…Lies down… on BROAAADWAAY!
My costume: the supernatural anesthetist.
:-)

Thanks Todd!

I definately think we should all get together and have a huge jamtopia blog hoe-down. This has been the best thing since they announced the festi. Look forward to having all you 1.0 phans out to party cali style. Open your minds a bit. Unfortunately I didn’t discover Phish till I was 20 in 2001. I went and saw them 6 times in 2003. No show really blew my mind but overall they were some good jammy sets. I’m looking forward to 8 and see the new “old” phish. I’m stoked and you should be too whatever they decide to play for us!

Which by the way will be Ziggy

or C.T.A.

or Purple Rain

or?????

Apint-
congrats on your Phils beating my Dodgers again. We’ll get you next year…wait a minute I’m starting to sound like a Cubs fan!!

or

@gilmorered

Not sure if someone pointed this out to you yet but….Thriller is the 2nd best selling album of ALL TIME.  and you know what’s number one?  The Eagles greatest hits.  THE FUCKING EAGLES, MAN!  “IT’S BEEN A LONG NIGHT AND I HATE THE FUCKING EAGLES…MAN!”

Top band in America, 1977, or 2nd best selling record of all time?  You decide who’s boss. and neither of them will happen.  We’re gonna get Thriller(song, not album) at some point on Halloween, Thriller->Suzy Greenburg->Tweezer Reprise would be a pretty ridiculous encore, and even PiNT can’t disagree with that :).

dude listen to that album “minutemen”  How the hell are they gonna play 44 minute and a half songs.  also there is no keyboard.  I thought it was a three man band also.

The 100th album is actually written on the inside of the invitation. See the blood pool? What kind of an invitation is blank on the inside? It is probably signed by the killer. Hmmm.

What defines a Phish fan 1.0?  2.0? 3.0?  Who determined these categories?

Whatever they play will be awesome so can we stop with the negativity?

Also, I don’t think the leaked map was a fake.  It looks like AutoCAD to me.  As someone who works with AutoCAD everyday, misspellings are quite normal (unfortunately).  I think it was pulled bc it’s real.

Trey went as Charlie Brown one year… paper mache head,. i think fish dresses up all the time! ;) as does mike? and Page has big ears.. lol!

“It’s like that song, Come Sail Away by Styx,.. everytime i hear it..”
-Eric Cartman

Just realized thaa couple of the records that were up (pixies, the doors,, tom waits, the eagles and television) are all on elektra records w/ phish. If they are gonna film this thing and sell it/show it in theatres then it would prob be alot cheaper for them to play a band already on their same label, instead of buying the rights from another seperate label. I just looked really quick, but I think the only one thats on elektra and still alive is Television.

Just noticed the Eddie banner up top.  FUCK YEAH PHISH WILL PLAY MAIDEN AND SLAY ALL YOU WIMPY WOOKS!

Here’s another stupid idea!!! Knives are killing albums, and “Knives Out” is a song off Radiohead’s Amnesiac which was recorded during the same sessions as Kid A. I’ve got nothing as far as the arrows killing albums.  I’ve wasted so much time at work checking this damn board, too entertaining!!!!  BTW, I am a Phish v 1.0 phan, and I can’t stand the “I know everything” from a lot of the other 1.0 phans that has been going on.  I must inquire 1.0 phan, can you still have fun?

Lets just hope the 100th album isnt katy perry

@Allister
“1) “left Alive”. Could that refer to a band which hasn’t lost any members to death?”

thats not a bad theory, does anyone know the stats on all members still being alive for theses last albums?

@Andy-the Batman Forever Andy

Dude I need to smoke a bowl with you at the fest, I though I had a good imagination, most original outlandish theory yet(in a good way), I love how people are getting really creative.

To me Steely Dan dead increases the chances of Television & Yellow Brick Road, but like that guy said, your not calling it unless you pick one so Im callin Television until it gets eliminated. I was just so surprised and happy to see it on the list.

Also were the Beatles just not an option because of White Album? I love Rubber Soul but cant beleive it was there without Sgt.Peppers or Revolver. If theres a 100th, which theres not, might as well be Sgt.Peppers, and have they ever worn costume or just played costume? So many folks are talkin like there gonna dress up but I dont remember this for the Who orLoaded.

More on yellow brick road.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQ4_NSc4Oh0

this is the link on phish’s site with the GYBR—-talking about how he writes the music and bernie the lyrics.

sound familiar>—-i think its the only link that doesn’t have a music clip, too.

screw the 100th album red herring

Contracts are signed.  It is on!
