Phish Late Summer Tour 2009: Tickets, Dates, More

Farm announcing the Phish Late Summer Tour 2009
UPDATE: Learn about the 2009 Phish Halloween Festival

This morning Phish announced 12 more summer tour dates which unlike the early Summer tour offers some welcome news for fans in the Mountain states and West coast.

Phish Tour Dates: Late Summer Tour 2009

Once again the band used a custom announcement video to break the news, this time featuring a Google Earth zoom into some farmland culminating in a large “09” painted on a field. Birds rages in the background of the video with tour dates superimposed on top.

Upon initial viewing, I thought this video was about 1/3 as cool as the other two announcement videos. But a post on The Butter Room changed my opinion drastically. Per The Butter Room, the video is a clue as to the whereabouts of an (as yet) unannounced end-of-summer Phish festival.

According to Rand & McNally over there — “doing a little research and utilizing Google’s Earth and Maps” — the festival will be on a small family-owned farm in Georgetown, Texas. Take a look at the embedded google map below to see the exact spot of the “09” in the video.

The Butter Room contacted Georgetown’s Public Information Office who did not confirm a Phish festival, but did indicate that “a touring band with a substantial following has indicated interest in using the location for a festival in late September.” Looks like our friends in the Lone Star State may be in for a little musical treat in September!

NOTE: The Phish festival in Texas is apparently not happening. See below for updates.

And of course speculation continues that Phish will kick off their Summer tour not at Jones Beach on June 4th but at Fenway Park on May 31st, following a two-night stand by (another Red Light act) Dave Matthews Band.

Update: March 18, 2009, 11:00 pm

Oh man where do I start. I guess most importantly, it's been brought to my attention that the blog post on The Butter Room was actually reposted from PT, immediately making it suspect. Shame on me for not checking my sources better, and shame on them for not citing their source in the first place. At the end of the day it seems more like a simple case of unusual location scouting than some sort of clue to a summer festival, which seems to be the prevailing thinking from pretty much everyone whose opinion I respect.

That said, many of these same respectable folk are telling me that Phish at Fenway is a lock, or as one terse but effective email put it, “Fenway is absolutely happening.”

Fenway or not, I'll still hold out hope for a festival. Not just because it'd be a blast, but because I'd much rather collect $10 from Scotty B than have to give him $10 :)

And in other news, for some inexplicable reason Ticketmaster was selling Red Rocks Phish tickets for a short period around 8 pm today. Apparently dozens of people were able to order 4 day passes to Red Rocks, and in some cases multiple. There seems to be a bit of confusion at Ticketmaster, where some reps are saying it was a mistake (in which case the orders could be canceled) and other reps are saying it was a planned “pre-sale.” If it wasn't a goof, or they otherwise decide to honor the orders, all I can say is well done early-birds.

Update: March 19, 2009, 9:00 am

One word says it all… canceled. That's right, Ticketmaster has canceled the premature Red Rocks ticket orders. Oh well. As the update on HT says, “it was fun while it lasted.”

Update: March 19, 2009, 2:00 pm

Phish released a statement about the Red Rocks ticket SNAFU on their site. Here's a summary: “Last night we learned Ticketmaster mistakenly put on sale a substantial number of four-day passes to Phish's concerts this summer at Red Rocks Amphitheater… they have cancelled all of these orders. We are in active dialogue with Ticketmaster to push them to address the inconvenience their error has caused.” And then my favorite part, “the high demand for the tickets on Phish's return has overwhelmed the prevailing ticketing systems and revealed their flaws.” Read the full statement.

For the people who had their orders canceled, there's a bit of a double-whammy. Frist, they go from elation to devastation in a matter hours. Then to top it off, Ticketmaster says they may take 4 to 6 days to refund the money which means some people won't be able to float a lottery order on their credit cards before the window closes on Sunday. Ouch.

Update: March 19, 2009, 5:00 pm

A just-posted Denver Post article contains a bit of authoritative info about the Phish Red Rocks Ticket guffaw. Apparently there 1,900 orders canceled following the accidental onsale. To make ammends, Ticketmaster will spend nearly $100,000 to offer a $50 Ticketmaster gift card to those who had their order canceled. Sounds like a nice peace offering to me.

Update: March 24, 2009, 4:00 pm

Luke Sacks over at Hidden Track has just posted an interview with David Butler, President of Ticketmaster North America about the Red Rocks Phish tickets. Butler described the incident as 100% human error, saying Ticketmaster is to blame exclusively. He also takes full credit for the idea of the $50 gift cards, fwiw.

Update: March 30, 2009, 4:30 pm

Ah man, leave it to FOX News to spoil all the fun. According to a recent news report from myFOXaustin (yes, that's really how they spell it out) there will be no Phish festival in Texas this summer. Apparently the promo video was created by the daughter of the farm's owner, John Fagot. Though the segment seems authoritative, Fagot did erroneously claim that the band posted a denial on their website. Maybe you can find it, but I sure couldn't. Either way, looks like I owe Scotty B $10.

Sorry. You need to Flash to watch this movie.

looked at it again right now and only cali is yellow.. but im sure itll go back and forth for a while as they wanna f with our heads

not cali man, they took it off the map

Guys… the show is in California… go to Phish’s website and watch the video with the USA and such zoomed out to 200%...

All the theories are pointing to saving the date tree’s at polo field in Indio, Ca. I can only hope that this is all they are- THEORY?! I mean why deprive the entire east coast, or make it more difficult to reach the location? I think a central us location would be the most practicle, and ideal to drawing the biggest crowd. Or if you want to spark money into a town or have interest in rebuilding then I believe New Orleans is an even better option. I mean, where better than being on the bayou on Halloween? :) Bonnaroo was awesome, and I hope that I can also be lucky enough to attend save the date. Patience is a virtue, and I am trying to sharpen mine, although this has me very anxious to learn. We’ll all know soon enough. Its gonna be crazy fun!

I hope it’s not in indio too. It is a horrible place for a show.  I know from expierence.

I think Vegas is the best spot for the time of year,  60,000 at sam boyd stadium that would be cool.  They took some states down, hopefully we can get tixs soon.

i just hope its not in indio.  no alcohol allowed at coachella camp grounds??

please be in Texas or Florida.

If only it could be at the farm in manchester….
Thank you Bonnaroo.

So how much of a rumor is this now that an announcement of festival dates without a location is official?  Has anyone in Austin seen this site?  I imagine the location announcement is coming very soon.
I think a Texas festival for Halloween would be awesome.  As someone who loves Phish and was at all the Texas shows in 97 and 98, Phish outdoors in the summer is unbearable!!  People were passing out all over the place from the heat.  The temps in late oct would be fantastic, similar to temps at Big Cypruss.

Well, check out phish.com today… someone owes someone 10 bucks.  But where?!?

Weather in TX would be perfect in late Oct / early Nov.

My kids are going to kill me for missing Halloween!

finally south side of chi town

I moved to Texas from Ohio in ‘00—which means i went from ground zero for hitting many of the midwest and east cost shows tour after tour for many years to a Phish dead zone. Let’s hope this is more than a rumor.

If that is indeed the festival site, there is bound to be some sort of activity there prepping it well in advance of the event.  I live in Austin….perhaps I should do some recon of the area.  There is a killer biergarten in that area that I could use an excuse to go to taboot :)

I think we will see a festival. A huge festival will be the only way most of us will get to see them. Phish is selling out everywhere within minutes putting tickets is the hands of the rich. If they let 100,000 through the door you might be able to get a ticket for face value.

Georgetown is a great spot for a fest. its far enough outside of Austin and is a town dominated by German immigrants (great pastries) Very small, maybe a couple thousand people live there. Its perfect becuase of its previously stated distance from several major cities and airports. Its located directly off of I-35 a major highway and gets my vote mainly becuase i live in Dallas and i never thought they would come back for at least several years if ever. Trey is from texas and its been much too long.

My hopes and prayers!

hope they dont get tooo heavy into touring. take your time phish dont let the glow out of your eyes right out of the bag.
on a side not i gots my fingers crossed for any of the red rocks /gorge dates

get me out of this small time texas town cause i dont wanna be stuck in jail when the sun goes down…..

@Scotty B: It’s on. I’ll give you your ten bucks when I see you at Fenway.

@Miss Angela: Pretty sure that was tongue in cheek.

LMFAO at phish opening for ratdog…. aer you kidding me!

$10, includes ACL, I’ll take that action for sure.

Why did they pick that random spot? Ask the production company they paid.

austin photography.

austin photographer.

just a random 09 for their video.

let’s just keep our fingers crossed for fenway.

@John Fishman: Good point re: Austin. Is Mastro from there?

@Brian: Fascinating.

If you zoom out a little bit, that yellow line (I’m guessing it’s a county line) is called Weir.

Clearly, this is a sign that Phish is opening for Ratdog.

Georgetown is not a mecca for video production, but when you say Georgetown, you are talking about Austin, which is.  The question to me is whether the band would even consider doing its festival down in Texas.  If they would, Georgetown is pretty much the ideal spot because it is far enough away from Austin but close enough to Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and all of those airports.  I just find it hard to believe Phish would come to Texas for this, though some of the most sizzling Phish shows I have ever seen have been in Austin.

@ScottyB: Would the bet include an ACL appearance? Either way I’ll throw down $10 just for kicks.

Also, you got an alternate hypothesis as to why they’d send a crew to such a seemingly random spot?

@Sam: I realize the band didn’t actually go to Texas, but they clearly sent a crew. The photo credit for those pics is Ryan Mastro who is the house photographer for Bonnaroo, Coachella, etc. Plus it’s not like Georgetown, TX is a Mecca for video production companies.

And to me the “treatment” of the late summer tour video is significantly different than the skywriting video, and I’m reading it as an X marks the spot type of thing.

Of course I’ve been wrong before…

Phish was not in Texas to paint that field.  It’s not like Page and Mike flew down to Austin and personally picked out their favorite spot to paint.

Someone they paid to produce the video did it.  The guy or the production company that did it is probably based in Texas or something like that.

Also, ask all the folks around southern California if hosting a big tour announcement counts for anything (summer tour part 1 was announced over Santa Monica yet there are zero summer shows in southern California).

My two thoughts are: 1) it is a lot less likely to rain in central Texas in September than in the NE and 2) that is right when the Austin City Limits Festival held.  Curiouser and curiouser.

I’ll take that bet on the festival!

Surprised Todd at TBR didn’t mention he cut and pasted that supposed article from PT when he posted it.

Too funny.

What I can’t believe is that Phish would just happen to choose a spot in the middle of Texas that happens to be a private farm and just willy nilly decide that’s a good place to paint a huge “09” and use it for their tour announcement video.

They had to be there for a reason, and I presume that reason was to investigate the location for a potential Summer festival.

Whether they choose to have a festival at that location or not, or decide to even have a festival at all remains to be seen.

FWIW, my money’s on a fest.

Butterroom post is only based on a BS rumor from Phantasy Tour.

The guy that supposedly called Georgetown, TX to get the story about a touring band being interested in the area later chimed back in to admit he made it up—he felt bad once non-PT sites/blogs started picking up the “story.”

No Texas show, sorry.
