Classic Trey Band Makes Some Noise in Brooklyn

Marquee from Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY

Just a few days after Trey's acoustic performance at Newport Folk Festival and with Phish reunion rumors still swirling, Trey Anastasio staged a reunion of another sort — getting the “classic” Trey Anastasio Band (TAB) from 1999 back together for an intimate show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY.

Classic TAB was my favorite of Trey's side projects, a short-lived power trio featuring Trey on guitar, Russ Lawton on drums, and Tony Markellis on bass. The Brooklyn show found them reunited, only this time as a foursome, with the great Ray Paczkowski on keys added to the mix.

And that wasn't the only reunion going on. After a handful of acoustic-only gigs, Trey was also reunited with his Languedoc, the custom hollow-body guitar that helps create the “Trey-tone” so familiar to and beloved by Phish fans.

The Trey Band Brooklyn Setlist featured traditional TAB songs like Cayman Review, Night Speaks, Drifting, and Mr. Completely; first time debuts including Gone, Valentine, Greyhound Rising, and Light; and the electric debut of the new songs Alaska, Peggy, and Backwards Down The Number Line.

Security may be non-existent, but my husband and our friends got yelled at for dancing too hard on the balcony!

P.S. The title of this post is a reference to Jay-Z's guest appearance with Phish in Brooklyn.

Update (August 10, 2008): See our post about Trey & Classic TAB at the All Points West Festival in New Jersey.

Update (September 11, 2008): This Fall Trey's going on tour with Classic TAB (Russ Lawton, Tony Markellis and Ray Paczkowski) for eight shows. Search for Trey tickets right here on Jamtopia.

Thanks for the stream of the Classic Tab Show!! Its great to hear Trey playing faster and more stable (like the late 90’s). Also his voice is noticably stronger than it has been in the past few years. Thanks again, and keep those fingers crossed for a reunion!

This is awesome. I’d really like to get ahold of some older trey band shows. Does anyone have any? or know where I can get them?

Hey Dayna -

Here’s a great older Trey show that you can stream or download…

Trey Anastasio Band, Murat Theatre , Indianapolis, IN, May 4, 1999

It’s a set of Trey doing mostlyPhish tunes acoustic, then another set featuring the original TAB power trio: Trey, Russ and Tony. A few cool covers at the end too (Voodoo Chile and Row Jimmy).

You can also find a ton of other great shows for free streaming or download at tauthal.com’s weekly live music broadcast archive.

Incidentally, I just added tauthal to Jamtopia’s live music streams directory.
