The concert film will feature footage by AEG Live and Action 3D that was shot during all eight sets of Festival 8 in Indio. Beggars can't be choosers, but I'm really hoping the pyro-infused Mike's Song didn't end up on the cutting room floor as I'd certainly love to see that in 3D.

According to Consequence of Sound, the band will begin to tease PHISH 3D: The Movie with a 15-second trailer at Alice in Wonderland 3D screenings this weekend. Expect a longer trailer to be released next month.

NOTE: Hmmm… I can't seem to get the notification form to load but others have reported that it works for them.

Update: Phish 3D Bloomberg Release (March 6, 2010 @ 12:01 am CT)

Per this Bloomberg release there were 3,659 screens in the U.S. and Canada equipped with 3-D projectors as of Jan. 5 and Phish / Action 3D / AEG Live will be using technology from Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp. to digitally transmit and project the movie.

The source code of the phish3dmovie website leads me to believe it was developed in partnership with the aforementioned Cinedigm (which is a tad curious) by a group called New Reach Consulting who appear to have a pretty solid music industry background.

NOTE: For the tech dorks out there, and perhaps more curiously, if you view the site with the Firebug "Net" tab open you'll see some strange "Flexispot" JavaScript / Flash tracker thing that as best I can tell is attempting to determine if you've previously visited a whole slew of other sites. (e.g. Bonnaroo, Jazzfest, Last.fm, etc). I have no familiarity with this but my assumption is that they'll be running ads for the movie on some of those sites and this script will allow them to account for “view through” conversions (i.e. you saw an ad, didn't click, but later went to site anyway). This is of course pure speculation so hopefully someone from New Reach will see this and chime in with an explanation.

Assuming this is showing at the same spots as the DMB 3D movie, here's a theater locator so you can see if it'll be anywhere near you. The closest theatre for me is just 3.4 miles away. Fine.

Welcome to The Final Frontier.

Hell yeah! Today Iron Maiden officially announced their new album, “The Final Frontier,” as well as a supporting tour, appropriately named “The Final Frontier World Tour.”

Though it's not due until late summer of this year, the band finished work on the new album a few weeks ago according to producer Kevin Shirley, who also worked on Flight 666, Matter Of Life And Death, Dance Of Death, and Brave New World.

The 22-stop North American leg for The Final Frontier World Tour (with Dream Theatre opening) starts June 9th in Dallas and ends July 20th in Washington DC. [Jump to Tour Dates]

The European leg for The Final Frontier World Tour includes 6 previously announced dates, with the promise of the band continuing on to “many other countries in 2011.” [Jump to Tour Dates]

The setlist for the summer shows is still in development, but according to Bruce, “it will cover the whole history of the band” as well as a few tracks from the new album. I look forward to hearing the new stuff, but I'm much more psyched to hear some of the classics just like the Somewhere Back in Time tour.

Meanwhile, to help prevent scalping, tickets will be made available to members of the Iron Maiden Fan Club before they go on sale to the general public, and many of the North American shows will use Ticketmaster Paperless Ticketing which requires you to present the credit card used to purchase tickets and a government issued ID at the show. Props to Maiden for their efforts to help ensure fans can get tickets for a fair price on the primary market.

About a week ago, a seemingly spammy twitter post broke the rumor of a possible Phish run on August 9th & 10th at the picturesque Town Park in Telluride, Colorado.

This was quickly followed by a Denver Post article that was equally non-commital.

Well here's some good news. As of 12:30 PST today, the Telluride Parks and Recreation Commission gave their okay for the Phish shows in Telluride, leaving just two hurdles one hurdle in the way of the prospective throwdown in the mountains.

I spoke to the Parks & Rec department to find out a bit more about what stands in the way and here's what I learned.

The First Hurdle: CCAASE

The first hurdle is a meeting with the Telluride Commission for Community Assistance, Arts and Special Events (CCAASE) who still need to approve the addition of the shows to the Telluride Special Events Calendar. This meeting is on Wed, March 3rd at Noon MST.

Update 3/3/2010 @ 2:30 pm CST: Great news… CCAASE, in their infinite wisdom, has unanimously approved the addition of the August Phish shows to the Telluride Special Events Calendar. One more hurdle to go!

Update 3/4/2010 @ 10:30 am CST: Some interesting tidbits in yesterday's Telluride Daily Planet article. First, CCAASE apparently “discussed the possibility of setting up a barricade at the entrance to town,” though I doubt it'd be anything some crafty w00ks couldn't get around. Second, if it happens, “tickets to these shows will only be sold in pairs, as concertgoers will have to buy Monday and Tuesday tickets together.” I'm sure that won't be a problem for anyone traveling to see the shows, but might hinder locals who just want to check out the band one night.

The Second Hurdle: Town Council

The second hurdle is yet another meeting, only this time it's with Telluride Mayor Stu Fraser and his six-member Town Council. The council will need to exempt the proposed event from a deadline requirement that passed last Spring. This meeting will take place on Tue, March 9, with the Phish portion at 11:05 MST.

Assuming this meeting is successful it's all downhill from there!

Update 3/9/2010 @ 1:18 pm CST: More good news… moments ago the Mayor and his Town Council unanimously approved the Phish shows, effectively clearing the way for the town to extend an invitation for the band to play two shows in Telluride on August 9th & 10th.

Now, the big question remains: will the band accept the invitation? And perhaps even more importantly, with 1,500 tickets per night going to local residents, how hard is gonna be to score tickets if they do accept?

Earlier today a page appeared on Ticketmaster that seems to finally confirm some great news: a theatrical release of a new Phish concert film.

Assuming the word on the street is correct, this will be none other than Phish Festival 8 in 3D, which has been rumored since the run-up to Festival 8 and now has a rumored release date of some time in May of this year.

A number of sets of Festival 8 in Indio was shot by AEG Live and Action 3D, as reported in Variety back in November, and the theatrical release was also mentioned in an article (since removed) in Palm Spring's newspaper The Desert Sun.

According to Variety, 3D concert films like U2 3D don't generally make much money (the exception: Miley Cirus), but I can tell you at least one person who wouldn't dare miss Festival 8 in 3D — this guy!

Trey Anastasio has officially announced a 16 show solo tour that will take place throughout the month of February.

The show will feature Classic TAB members Russ Lawton (drums), Tony Markellis (bass) and Ray Paczkowski (keyboards) as well as a three-piece horn section featuring Russell Remington (tenor sax and flute), Jen Hartswick (trumpet and vocals) and first-timer Natalie Cressman on (trombone and vocals).

According to HT the February 8th tour opener in Charlottesville will be a benefit show for the Kristine Anastasio Manning Memorial Fund on what would have been her 47th birthday.
